New phone, new OTA, should I? - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I've had a few of the problems with my 002 EVO and the RS I bought it at as a new phone for me. However, I have no way of knowing if this will come with the latest OTA update which blocks root. My question is this, should I expect that a way to root the EVO will be found and that I just have to wait for it? Or, have there been instances where the devs haven't been able to find a way to crack it?
I enjoy using the various ROMs out there, but Id like a screen that isn't lifting and a back cover that is flush. Thanks.

They well figure out out. Update just came out a couple days ago, personally id go get a new one.
Ifly
EVO fully rooted fresh

Don't do the new OTA update, as of right now, it cannot be rooted with the new OTA update.

If your gonna get a new one, then I wouldn't wait any longer. I literally just got back from Sprint just a moment ago with my replacement EVO. I'm not sure how long they've had it but it is only updated to the very first patch that came out on launch day, where with my first evo I had to update it to the first patch. Both evos are 003. The only difference I can see so far is that the back cover is different.

I got the replacement on the 2nd and it didn't have the ota. Unfortunately I have to take this one back as well since my 4g is whacked.

[Q] need help rooting 2.2 froyo

Ive searched and couldnt find my answer...
I made the mistake in updating my evo yesterday when I recieved it in the mail, thinking I wouldnt root it and just run launcher pro, etc. Now with the battery life and wanting to run baked snack, im lookin to root my phone. Does anybody know a method of rooting 2.2 froyo updated phone? Or do I have to take the long route and downgrade, then root? TIA
you are kind of sol right now. there has been no word of a process for rooting froyo from ota
As of right now, you just set and wait...no root for froyo yet.

Another one!
You are stuck with what you have. No known ways to root yet, and it will probably be a long wait until it's cracked.
F ME! i might do a return lol

I feel you on this. I received a replacement Evo in the mail (as my current one, which is rooted, has screen separation issues)... but I took the 2.2 OTA update after seeing that the replacement had an Epson screen and thinking I was going to return it and get a new replacement. I asked them to send me a new replacement, because I didn't want an Evo with an Epson panel, but they won't. So, I'm stuck with stock unless I decide to just return it and keep my current rooted one.
Here's to hoping for a 2.2 root method...hell I'll put a bounty on it if I have to!
+1 on that bounty.

"Well... I'm with you fellas." --- bounty's not a bad idea either... Taking up a collection?

Without a big debate, why don't you want the Epson screen? Just want to hear your reason I'm just being curious.
since no oen else pointed out there is no way to downgrade currently either for Evo, so yuo dont really have an option besides wait.
there has been lucks now with going to repair centers and asking them

[Q] Are replacement slides coming with the OTA?

My slide is being replaced (when I slide it open and closed, the screen goes nuts and gets disoriented repositioning the display... It's the cable) and does anyone know if replacements from tmobile are coming with the ota or should I be good to root the replacement when it comes?
I'm hoping it's one with the different keyboard lettering and pre ota.
I'm getting ny replaced too although I don't know I'd it comes with the ota, and my screen blacks out, it randomly reboots, etc

I just recieved my warranty replacement today, that I had ordered exactly 7 days ago. This one has the updated qwerty keypad with the smaller numbers. Now when I check in settings, the firmware that it states it has installed is '2.1 update-1'. So I believe this device doesn't have the updated firmware. I'm going to try and root it when I get home from work today.
The software number never changed on the OTA update
you have to look at the radio
and kernal to check if its the newly OTA

Yeah, I looked at the radio and I had 04S at the end, so I believe it didn't have the new OTA already preinstalled..and I sucessfully rooted my device.
Can you take a picture of the new slide models keyboard?
Sent from my T-Mobile myTouch 3G Slide using XDA App
yes plz do!
Tried my best to get a decent picture. As you can see numbers aren't that much smaller, but I like it over the older qwerty.

I had to call T-Mobile to get my phone replaced last night and they told me all the phones now are coming out with the new ota already installed. Are we going to be able to root the phones with the same root.zip file or is there going to be a new one? Not sure if the person actually knew or was guessing. It was hard enough to understand her as it was. I'll post when I get mine after I check the radio...
well if they have the OTA we're currently screwed.
I may just keep my broken one if I can't root the replacement.

In that case. I'm glad I received my device before they started sending them out with the OTA. (got my warranty replacement yesterday)

I wanted to know if I root my phone and flash a 2.2 rom, will I be able to update to the original 2.2 when it comes out? Will it unroot my phone? If so, is there another way to root it after?
They aren't I just got a replacement nd it didn't have it

mine came today, pre ota, with the newer keyboard.
Rooted just fine in like 5 mins with that new method.

If you install a froyo rom you will be able to unroot your phone and get the froyo ota when it comes out: or... you will be able to replace it with the the test keys signed version a few days after the froyo ota drops.
There is no way to know in advance if the froyo ota will break root. It can be assumed that tmo will attempt to plug all the holes that devs find, but whether or not they will be successful or open new holes in the process is unknowable.
hope that helps

Just got my replacement today and it's still pre ota and I don't know what the other
keyboard looks like but mine looks like the pic that was posted already.

Do new / refurbished EVOs come with 2.2 ?

Do new / refurbished EVOs come with 2.2 or do you need to do an OTA update to get 2.2? Reason I ask is that I have 2.2 rooted on my phone and I might have to get a replacement phone... will it come with 2.2 and if it does, I guess I am stuck on unrooted 2.2 until they come out with a root for 2.2?
i just got a brand new evo today, and yes they are shipping with 2.2.
no root for me till they release one.
my warranty evo came with 2.1 and I did the OTA update
Just from reading posts on the forums, most people are reporting getting 2.2 pre-installed on any new or refurbs. It make sense that they would shop with the most up-to-date software package. And unfortunately the root for Froyo may be awhile (if ever with Gingerbread 3.0 just around the corner).

Yeah, I was having issues with my EVO and had to order a replacement - luckily free of charge, but the rep told me that if they get shipped any replacement devices without 2.2 that they are required to update before giving us the phones - total bummer until we get root. I basically had to stand there and watch the guy destroy my hopes of CM6.

Was this at a sprint store? When I picked mine up, the guy asked me if I wanted him to do the update. I told him no & that I was in a hurry and would do the update later.
I pray that it comes with 2.1. I actually lost my fully rooted EVO (long story) so i had to go through Insurance. That was on Tuesday. I STILL DONT HAVE MY PHONE!!!! everyone cross your fingers because i would really miss flashing every ROM and kernel that comes out lol

It was just today at a Sprint store literally about 4 hours ago - I asked if I could just leave and do the updates myself later and he told me that they were told they had to do the updates before giving me the phone. Maybe it was BS, but that's my experience.
Just picked up 4 new EVO's today at Radio Shack and they all came with 2.2 outta the box.

I got a new one shipped with 2.2 as well. Question: If I take the screen of my new EVO and put it on my rooted evo with a broken screen, will it function as normal? Or are parts of the internals in the screen portion that still wouldnt be rooted?

[Q] Do all replacement/new EVO's come with 2.1?

I intend to maintain root access with the EVO, but am concerned that they may start shipping 2.2 Has anyone received a new 2.2 phone yet?
Many posts here that say newly received Evo's have Froyo already installed. If you want to keep root don't get a new phone.

Yup just got my brandnew replacment phone on thursday 8-19 and it had 2.2 loaded up on it all sparkly and s#@t right out of the box, I was a little disappointed guess I just have to wait now like everybody else. Oh well the phone actually does tons stock so im not to upset about it but would be nice to have android wired teather back and a custom rom again.
I don't have one yet, I'm just really considering ditching my PRE for the EVO. Thanks. That's bad news
you may be lucky
i picked one up on monday with 2.1
I received my replacement EVO Wednesday and it came with 2.1. Within minutes of activating, it tried to start the 2.2 update. I cancelled it and rooted as quickly as I could.
Got my replacement on Friday from Asurion with 2.2 installed.
If it does not shipped with 2.2 installed already, Sprint reps are being instructed to apply updates before handing over the phone. Though it seems that there is still a slim chance of getting one with 2.1 still, but very slim chance.

I was lucky and got my replacement with 2.1 but I gotta tell you if I knew I was going to be getting this phone now with no root I would go Epic simply because no root sucks!!

Is there any benefit to being on 4.22 instead of 4.24

I recently got a new evo due to a replacement and like many other folks I'm stuck unrooted with 2.3.3. It came with the 4.22 update instead of the 4.24 update. So should I stay with 4.22 or upgrade to 4.24?

New replacement or refurb?
if it is best buy. do your best to get a new one. lol.
but anyway.... I personally wouldn't upgrade UNLESS you use the compass and other reasons why they came out with the patch. lol. but then again, no one is working on trying to root 22. they are only working on 24..
I personally would have made my own OTA update for 24 that would have included root on it. :-D because you know you can actually do that. :-D

How do you know this? I only ask because I'm on 22 and not upgrading because I don't know which version will eventually be rooted. However, if I can upgrade to 24 and the phantom VM issue goes away, I might be able to convince my dad to trade evo's with me....because he's on froyo...

I don't have any inside info on this but logically working on 24 makes more sense. People on 22 can get to 24 for a root but some one on 24 can't get to 22. So it will help every one for them to find a root for 24 and just some for 22.
