Phone upgrade suggestion - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello everybody!
I have a chance to replace my (not so old) HTC Hero, which just recently updated to 2.1 officially, with a HTC Desire for about 345 € (I'm from Italy).
Would you suggest the upgrade having the phone or having compared it to the Nexus or the Galaxy S?
The Nexus is quite hard to find here and the galaxy costs 450 + €.
I love custom roms and I'd really want a 2.2 rom but I don't know how well do the Desire's coocked 2.2 ROMs perform compared to the original Nexus 2.2. If it's worth a shot I'd buy it, otherwise I'd just wait for prices to go down or better phones to be available (used is not a problem) at 350 € give or take.
Any suggestion?

Motorola Defy worth buying?

Hello guys,
I currently have my good, old, HTC Hero but I think it's time for a change. Is the Motorola Defy worth buying?
I am interested in the following:
1. is it easy to have custom roms?
2. any chance to have a working Gingerbread ROM?
3. are those 512 Mb of RAM enough for these days?
4. should I consider buying Defy or should I just look for another phone?
What's the best Quadrant score you know for Motorola Defy? My record is 428.
Thanks!
If you can wait, I suggest getting the Motorola ATRIX when it comes out at the end of February.
Swyped from my HTC Desire running LeeDrOiD 2.3d with Tapatalk.
I can wait, my Hero is pretty decent at this time. Hummm, but what if the ATRIX will cost 3x or even 4x more than Defy ( I could get a Defy for 240 Euro / 333 AUD )? What's the price that ATRIX is supposed to have at launch?

Supposedly $599 off contract with AT&T, but it won't be outdated for quite a while yet

Hummm. I hope it will be available worldwide. When I bought my Hero I did so just because my desired phone at that moment, Motorola Droid, was not available in Europe. Right after I bought my Hero, Motorola launched Milestone. I kinda regret not buying the Milestone.
Anyway, my first 4 questions at the first post are still still waiting for some answers, guys. Thanks!

Think the ram would be enough for a while, I've seen people posting quadrant scores 1100-1590, the other plus side is the price and the ruggedness of the phone, I'm considering one myself.

This phone has done nothing but surprise me. i have a samsung epic that is mine personally and the defy is actually owned by my work. This phone easily went head to head with the epic in performance (until the epic got ext 4 hack), and in some cases has actually performed better (ex dungeon defender refused to install on the epic for a long time but have been playing on the defy since it was released).
The only down side is the locked bootloader that makes custom roms (including a GB rom) almost impossible, however there is a great group on here that is willing to help you customize the phone.

1. Not really, due to the encrypted bootloader - it is possible but it makes things much more difficult than on other handsets.
2. Almost certainly not until the bootloader can be decrypted in some way or Motorola release it themselves.
3. Yeah, plenty.
4. You're the only person who can answer that.

I'm using Mini Info, and my RAM is at a constant 50MB (sometimes less) out of an available 476MB. This phone really knows how to handle stuff. Get it!
512 mb ram is enough to run every application
Standart Quadrant Score is 800 ~ 1000
I see a Guy with a Sense Rom, JIT and OC to 1200 mhz he get 2000+
Hell yeah

Yes. Very nice device.
i have an HTC Desire but we got the kids Defys .... must say im very impressed with the defy ... go for it
I got my Defy a couple of weeks ago having spent many hours flashing and re-flashing my Hero with the fantastic roms and kernels built by erasmux, elelinux, radu, Cronos and the others. I have to say I was initially a bit disappointed that I couldn't do the same with my Defy. I did root it and started to tweak it a bit, but to be honest it's such a brilliant phone that there isn't the same imperative as there was with the Hero. For the money you can't get better, and I'm amazed that it's not more widely known. If you read the reviews it's been universally admired, and I've not been disappointed. The screen is outstanding, it's as tough as old boots and it flies, even with Motoblur on it. And if you don't like Motoblur, just remove the widgets and you'll hardly know it's there. It's also a good size - more manageable than some of those 'high-end' phones (Desire HD, Samsung Galaxy S etc) and just as capable.
Can't recommend it highly enough.

There'll still be the bootloader issue though.
Until Motorola follow through on their promise to find an alternative solution to encrypting the bootloader that's more hacker-friendly, if indeed they ever bother to do so, we'll be stuck with custom ROMs that are based on the same version of Android as the official ROMs.

I just got a quadrant score of 897 running at 1ghz. Nothing major. I could get 1500s easy if my gf didn't install so many games anyway, the phone is worth buying and is waterproof as it claims to be

How does Defy handles Flash?
I would say no, if you can wait then wait a bit!
Encrypted boot-loader means you have to hope Motorola release updates. Wait and see of Motorola change their policies about bootloader, they *may* do it after that youtube comment went wild all over the internet and they responded, but they may not either.
I will never ever buy a phone that is locked out this way. Right now all new phones released by Sony Ericcson and Motorola have locked bootloader. So if I were you I'd stick to HTC or Samsung.
I mean look at something like HTC HD2 or HTC Desire, these phones are now pretty old but have multiple gingerbread ROMs, cause they are fully hackable. of course anything that is a Nexus is also hackable and the Galaxy S range from Samsung is good also.
If I needed a phone right now, I'd be looking at the following:
- Google Nexus S
- Samsung Galaxy S
- HTC Desire HD
- HTC Desire Z
They are all known to be hackable and recent models and will perform better than a Hero.

[Q] Whats the best 4" Android Phone - Replacing HTC Desire

Hi all gonna replace my HTC Desire its been great and I am keen to stay with this size device. What would people recommended? The LG seems good but its froyo and I don't really want to go back from gingerbread. Currently running vanilla gingerbread so be happy if I can just run that. Also I tend to flash different roms now and again so a good scene on here would be great.
Any suggestions would be much appreciated
Thanks
Hi mate,
i've got the LG Optimus 2X (P990)
Amazing phone - so fast - and Gingerbread will be released for it in a month or so.
Another great thing about it is that it actually handles 32GB microsd cards

Thanks,
What is the battery life like? don't suppose you had a desire beforehand ?
I would take the Nexus S, pure Google-Phone - 4", similar to Samsung Galaxy S.
I own the Desire HD, 4.3" screen but amazing once you put a custom rom on it.
I would definitely look at something with the dual-core Tegra chipset.
Phones with 3.7 - 4 - 4.3 inch screens that are available now:
HTC Desire S (the successor to the original Desire). (3.7 inch screen, like orig Desire).
HTC Desire HD (successor to the HD2 (runs WM6.5), but runs Android).
Samsung Galaxy S (what I have right now).
Samsung Galaxy S2 (only available in Europe right now).
HTC Incredible S/HTC Droid Incredible 2 (in USA).
Motorola Atrix. (has Motoblur, and locked bootloader, meaning no custom ROMs yet).
Samsung/Google Nexus S (no MicroSD card slot).
LG Optimus 2x/LG G2x (in USA).
Sony Xperia Arc. (one of the thinnest smartphones avilable).
Sony Xperia Play (PlayStation certified).
Or the new HTC Sensation, which is what I'd like, but it's unreleased right now.
Don't forget the
HTC Glacier (aka T-Mobile myTouch 4g) (3.8" screen) (in USA)
I've got it and it does everything I've ever needed to do with it even though I haven't gotten around to rooting it yet.

Is it a good idea to buy HTC Incredible S instead of HTC Desire?

Only thing it is holding me back because it isn't popular phone so I might don't have much of support or any help for rooting, hardware issue or anything like that. I could just save $150 and go for HTC Desire, but I like 8mpx, front camera and the screen on HTC Incredible S. I like HTC Desire because it is quite popular and it has a lot of support, but Incredible S sounds and look much cooler.
Also excuse me for posting in wrong section, I couldn't find a correct section for general discussion of android phone (hardware).
EDIT: I posted this thread in both section Desire and Incredible S for unbiased opinion.
Two words. Incredible s. If you can wait get a sensation
Sent From My HTC sensation (desire with rcmix s )
Incredible S defenietly has better specifications, but it indeed does not have the same customrom / supportuserbase on xda yet.
Like stated above, the Sensation will be out in 1-2months, and thats a great phone. If you cannot wait and want a new phone now, perhaps the Desire HD is a valid option also (Better than regular Desire, similar specs to Incredible, but awesome support/userbase here on XDA).
Blah id get the lg optimus 2x for that amount of cash (dual corez)
But if i had to choose incredible s (desire is booring)

I got an Arc to wait for the Sensation with root, I am considering to sell it and get a Desire or DHD just because the Arc while it has root it doesn't have any custom rom!
I sold my 1 year used N1 for 330$ 2 weeks ago so I think selling a Desire or DHD in 2 months will be pretty the same, whereas the SE price droping fast and its lack of popularity will mean that I will sell it for even less than a Desire.
So if you can't live without custom roms more than 2 weeks...buy a good old Desire or DHD!
The Sensation will be out between the 8th and 15th June, add to that another month to find a root and the price to decrease
Well, guys, thanks for replying, but why would you ever mention Sensation? I have a budget and I couldn't shell out that much of money and what I heard, dual-core is a battery drainer plus I don't want 4.3" screen as it's too big for me. Even 4" is, that's why I was going for Desire which is 3.7" or something.
Can you put custom ROM on Incredible S?
^If you're that worried about budget and everything, you might want to look into the Nexus S, it runs better than any of these phones (except dual-core), has decent dev support, is factory-unlocked, and it's more pocket-able than 4.3" phones.
If you're absolutely tied between the Desire and the Incredible S, then go for the Incredible S because of significantly better specs, a newer version of Sense and WAY more onboard memory.
To be honest, the main reasons people here work on custom roms, is because we don't have Sense 2.0 on the Desire without an Ace rom (DHD), because of memory limitations (147MB on stock partition table, vs 1.1GB in Incredible S), to make it run faster, or to run MIUI or AOSP.
Sense is great, and with the Incredible S, your phone will run better than a Desire running sense ever would, so go with that!

I couldn't go for Google Nexus S because it doesn't have support in Moscow, Russia e.g if I have hardware failure or such, I couldn't take it to the support.
Sounds like I wouldn't need to change ROM on Incredible S but I would like to be able to root it to have full power on it. Is Android applications depended of which phone model do you have (I'm already aware it's depended of android version)?
Also, is dev support is that important? If it is, then I guess I should fall back down to HTC Desire.
Also, I'm pretty tired of this 5 minutes limit for editing/posting, when will it get removed?
If you are in desperate need of a new phone and you can afford something more expensive than Desire, I think you should get either Incredible S or Nexus S.
If you can wait and still afford the price when it comes to the market, I think Sensation would be the better option.
The good old Desire is still a good option to get. Despite of all its weaknesses due to being an old model with old specs, Desire is very cheap at this moment, especially the second handed one.
I had a Desire about a year ago, then moved to the Samsung Galaxy S.
But just today I bought a Desire for £200 brand new, I couldn't resist as it's just such a good phone!
Running AdamG's Oxygen ROM on it now, it's so awesome!
Oh well I just discovered the weather from Sense 3.0 has been ported to DHD in a 100% workingl rom, the Desire will follow shortly
I guess it boils down to price for you by the sounds of it. Also consider if you are big in to gaming and video as Incredible GPU is much better than Desire from what I can remember. Is the Incredible locked though, as in bootloader/ROM's? Also something to bear in mind.

[Q] Do you recommend buying Desire ?!

Hi all
Do you recommend buying Desire ?!
I tried Android at Wildfire and found it so good and amazing so i sold it and want to get a new more powerful device
It costs around 420~500 USD in my country - Egypt and the devices in that range is New Galaxy Ace or used Galaxy S and i don't like both
already compared it to Desire S and couldn't find any huge different which will cost me more 100 USD !!!
so do you recommend buying HTC Desire ? and is it true it will updated to New Sense same one in Desire S ???!!!
Desire S has the double of space (1.1 GB internal memory) compared to the normal Desire
Desire will never get sense 3.0
But if u can spend a bit more or found a cheap offer, i'll go for the samsung galaxy s 2, once buyed it u can stay with it for 2-3 years without need to change phone (the same is not true for the desire s in this moment, because it's already "old")
Just my opinion if you going to buy a new phone, anyway i will stay with an other year or more with my desire (got it in april 2010) before buy an other top phone, this is my personal philosophy
I just recently bought a used Desire for about $200 CAD and I love it.
My voice plan with Rogers comes to like 22$ and I have no desire to add a $25 data plan to get $50/month plan to get a phone subsidized from them.
I just the App2SD with a 1GB ext4 partition on my SD card to get around the limited space the phone has.

Galaxy S II will cost me about 800$ and this is too much for phone , buying i7+6GB laptop will be better idea
i think that i already saw costume roms for Desire with sense 3 and circle lock screen or i am wrong ??!!
and i am still noob at Android but i thing with root i can add more extra space for phone to install apps to it exactly like installing them to phone memory and it's so easy to get 8 or 16 GB SD Card ???
and as you said Desire S seems to be old and same as Desire so i think spending more money on it will not be a good idea
What about Desire HD , If i managed to get it with good deal do you recommend it ?
will it be updated to new Sense the one in Sensation officially or also will be custom rom ?

DHD is a fair bit better and still has some decent rom support. It will probably get the sense update, so if you can't really find a newer phone i'd say yeah, go for it.
i'm also pretty much new with android and htc so let me give you some n00b insight...
i've owned Desire for 3 months and i got used to it by now. it can give you both joy and anger. it depends on how you use it. if you live it on stock ROM it'll work smooth and you can find tips and tricks how to make it somewhat better without rooting and flashing roms: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=653310
if you decide to root and flash custom ROMs then you can get even better device with many tweaks already built-in new software. for example you can flash Desire HD rom and therefore don't have to actually buy DHD (hardware is not that much different IMHO). now i'm running InsertCoin Gingerbread based rom which hasn't even been released for Desire yet, with many Sense 3.0 goodies which probably won't be officially included in GB update at all. as a downside, these roms can have some bugs, but are overall better than stock. just take a look into some rom development topics...
Desire has it's flaws but overall i'm waaay satisfied... although it's now an old rag D) it still kicks many "smartphone" butts out there. i came from nokia x6 and now i wonder why did i go there in a first place...
anyway, i think you can't go wrong with it. you can of course buy DHD for somewhat better hardware or spare some more money for sensation, but if you're unviling to do so, Desire is still great choice...just my 2 cents!! cheers, i hope this helps a bit!

The problem is getting SGSII or Sensation that thier prices are too high now and sooner their prices will be lower than now so i don't think it's good idea to get 2 months old phone right now ,,,
i liked HTC Sense a lot so i am choosing from HTC not Samsung also HTC have bigger support from developers than Samsung as i can see
but i read that it's sound is low and LCD Screen not that good ,, is this true ?

yeah, x6 had much better camera, and camera is my only problem with desire. but the phone (any phone) is never meant to be a substitute for real camera..so no real prob here....
DHD rom for desire is actually a port, so desire can run it. it's not THE rom from DHD. with that said, you can put virtually any rom into desire but with more or less tweaking to the point where hardware eventually becomes incapable of running much newer rom. therefore sense 3.0 stuff are greatly tweaked for desire to be able to run it. it's not like the real thing but pretty much close. and it's getting better every day... modders here are the wizards, i tell you...
so yeah, i'm happy with desire, didn't regret spending the money on it at all!
as for the official update from HTC, there were many contradictory statements, and the final one is that there WILL be gingerbread update but no word on sense update. you can find it in desire-general section.
I'm using Desire since April 2010, so it's more than a year now. I was very excited about the whole Android thing. And still am. But the phone itself has some big issues. First of all is the huge lack of internal memory. I can't even install the most necessary apps. Secondly it's the overheating problem. My Desire was one of the first Amoled batches and it had issues with the SOC. While using processor demanding apps like navigation, flash playback etc. It was constantly rebooting. Had to repair it. For 3 times. Then it's the speaker and battery. They both are weak. After my previous E61 Desiree's speaker really sucks. Camera is decent too. But in overall I still like, though I would really consider buying SGS back then. Now I'll wait for another year or so. Btw I'm now using MIUI ROM and it gave a second breath to Desire. Good luck with buying!

Help me in buying DESIRE. !

I am a proud user of LG Optimus one which s a fabulous phone due to dev support here @ XDA. I am thinking of buying Desire. I have few questions.
1. I am an audiophile . So i need an in ear earphones for Desire. Is ther any?
2. How s the dev support for Desire. Does it support well known roms such as oxygen, cm and MIUI?
3. I read bad news about the Sunlight legibility, battery and build quality of Desire. Any comments?
4. Does Desire have any other problems?
Thanks guyz. Awaiting response.
1. Supplied one is not in ear. You can (have to) buy separately any std (3.5 mm)
2. Dev support is very good. One of the best as Desire is HTC best product for 2010 and early 2011
3. Build quality is great better than any galaxy series, Battery is user specific - I dont find it terrible. Yes in direct sun light I find display little dull.
4. Desire have low internal memory so if you like more app you need to root, create ext partition and SD card and install any custom ROM. if you are planning to do that anyways its not a problem.
I am using desire since 1.5 years without any problem and tried many available ROM doing great for me, but I advice you to look for other options as Desire is old product and almost all users are in their end of their cycle. I dont know your buying preference but if you list down everyone can help you suggest more models.
I am looking to buy desire because i found it at an offer price of 15300 INR. I think there is no other good models compared to desire @ this price range. Am i right? Or is ther any?
So you want something for budget of 15000.
1. I just got Sony Ericsson Xperia Neo for 14750 (With out bill) which is twice better than my Desire. Neo V even goes 1000 Rs less.
2. Motorola Defy+ in 15500-16000
3. I am not sure but check Samsung Galaxy i9003 something which is also around 16000
4. There is one LG model also in 13000, cant remember name.
What are the disadvantages of desire. is defy+ better than desire ?
Without bill is without warranty right ? What if the product fails ? Warranty ?
Comparison of Desire and Defy+
Desire released in March 2010 while Defy+ in Sept 2011. Recent product so they will get official update.
Better CPU and GPU and double ROM.
Its dust and water proof.
1700 battery instead of 1400.
Those are the advantages of Defy+ over Desire.

Yes without bill is without warranty.
Let me explain how that works for me giving you example by my Neo purchase.
Neo officially available at around 18000+ and without bill it is 14750. So difference is 3000+ rs.
When they sell they give you demo and you can check and later you pay. If something wrong later also it wont cost me 3000 for sure. And I almost bought around 8-10 handset in last 3-4 years for my friends and family without bill and did not get complain.
And when you buy android handset and you root it your warranty is gone anyways.
So you have to decide its risk worth or not. Sometime bad luck is enough
