Need major help with this phone! - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've posted a couple new topics, and sent out few private messages. No responses. I am just having the worst time with this phone.
And I don't mean to sound like its the end of the world or anything, its just a lot of little things irritating me with this phone ever since I've rooted it.
I rooted with nand and installed damage control. Everything seemed fine, and then I was having permissions issues (i think, still waiting for a response to THAT post). Then applications would load up and then force close, and reinstalling didnt work. I was having problems with the camera.
I'm not sure I did it right, but I did a nand backup, wiped everything. then switched to a rooted supersonic rom. Loaded all that up, and everything seemed fine, camera was fine. Shortly afterwards though, things started messing up again. I think im having problems with the permissions. Handcent downloaded an update, and then couldnt install because of "insufficient memory". I backed up with titanium, wiped, then rebooted, and handcent worked. But now my camera doesnt work.
There are two options I can think of. First, I want to get completely back to factory, a fresh out of the box HTC Evo. No signs of root, just back to working 100% with no flaws like it did before. Flash whatever updates Sprint sends out and go on with life.
Or second, I like some of the benefits of being rooted, such as wi-fi tethering. Is there a specific way to reapply root, or to reapply roms? I'm kind of thinking of completely starting over. like a brand new stock evo being rooted for the first time. I'm nervous that maybe I didn't flash that supersonic rom right. I wouldn't mind having a different rom but everyone has mixed reviews/problems on every single rom created so far. If there was a nice rooted rom with everything working, 4g, wimax, camera, everything, thats the one I want. I don't really need any special frills or fanciness.
either post here, or my google talk is [email protected]. if anyone could give me a hand with this, I'd appreciate it, I'd even donate through paypal. I just want to get this phone straightened out, I got iphone kids laughing at me!

First, please ditch the giant sig.
Second, there have been a lot of posts regarding damage controls rom and problems, so i think that's the start of it.
I would try fresh's rom and see if it works for you, after doing a complete wipe again. Of course, don't bother with a nandroid backup or restore since all that does is restore the rom, and your rom is messed up.
So in recovery, go into the wipe menu and wipe it all and flash fresh 5.3.

Alright sig is gone, sorry.
I have a hard time keeping up with the hundreds of posts in those various rom threads. I'm not too lazy to search, but I just can't find anything. And then with work and everything taking up time, its tough to follow.
I'll download Fresh's rom right now, no back ups or anything, and give it a shot. thanks for the tip!
Would DamageControl rom still have any affect on my system now, since i am now on the supersonic 1.32.651.1?

I have not been able to fully understand all this rooting and flashing etc...O_O so i installed ROM manager, which now some peeps are sayin dont use if you dont know what you are doing WELL HI, THAT WOULD BE ME so for all the experts, gods and godesses of rooting (EVO) flashing, please please please help me from start to absoulute finish...i need to know what am i downloading, running, saving and to where- that was a huge issue too i couldnt find the files after i downloaded them LOL if i am successful...I will post the greatest YOUTUBE, forum, blog about this..i am so lost right now
b4 i forget a couple updates of info everytime i tried to flash or do any type of recent updates i get the usb connection 170 error or maybe 171 cant remember now....ummm...i rooted originally with unrevoked so unrooting i wouldnt have a clue...and yes i have searched allll possible threads for help but i only get 50/50 and then still get messed up..thanks
thanks again and happy rooting
While I am not going to hold your hand as there is plenty of information on these forums and the internet, I will steer you in the right direction. Since you are rooted, all you really need to do is download the rooted version of the latest stock rom. There are a few in the development section. The version is 4.22. After downloading you will flash this rom in recovery. Make sure you do a nandroid backup before flashing the update.
DO NOT unroot just to install the update. You will lose the ability to root hour phone for the foreseeable future.
Good luck

ok thanks i will try it now...stay tuned
Ur not going to see much difference. The update dissapointed lots of people expecting a new look. Install a couple of custom roms if u want to have some fun. I am using the MikG v1.03 Rom with new sense incorperated and its waaaay better than the stock update we just got.

Pleat try to see this as advice and not being an ass.
Rooting your phone is really for being able to dig in to your phone and get all you want out of it and be able to customize more than the average evo.
What were your initial intentions for rooting? I get the draw to have free wifi tether but, that just happens to be one perk of it. Of course, there are the options of kernels and cpu clocking.
But, really the developers are attempting to bring the newest and most useful and functional features to the roms opening the full potential of your phone.
Aside from that, if you are unclear and confused about the process of flashing, you should really hold off and do some more research.
Go to the wiki page and read up! i spent about a month reading everything I could find on rooting, flashing, kernels, radios, prls, threads on roms and their issues and up sides. I knew what I was doing and what rom and features I was going to use.
Honestly, youtube will also be your friend. A few devs also post videos people have made about their roms including how to flash them. You should also read up on the results of mistakes made during flashing and how to fix them.
Get to know your phone and submit it to do your will!
Good luck!

Your apps were gone because you wiped data. Try Titanium Backup - there's a free version in the market that allows you to backup and restore, get the Pro key to avoid agreeing to the permissions/install of each individual app. The Pro version also allows for a larger number of backups per app, where the free version limits to one and when you make another backup it overwrites the first one. You can also freeze apps with the full version, but if you enable "Chuck Norris Mode" in settings the free version will allow you to uninstall system apps. There are other perks to the Pro Key, but I digress...
If you backup your apps & data, you can restore them on the new one. Whenever you flash a new rom, always wipe data, cache and dalvik (dalvik cache is under advanced in Clockwork). If you're simply updating the rom (ie to a newer version by the same dev, like Cyanogenmod nightlies) you can just wipe cache and dalvik unless otherwise stated in the rom. Whenever you flash anything other than a rom - kernels, themes, mods, radios, etc - do not wipe data.
If you don't know which rom to use, as long as you have a nandroid backup you can always go back to your setup that you like... so flash away. If you want to stick with something closer to what you're used to, try Myn's Warm TwoPointTwo... it's still FroYo. If you want Gingerbread/Sense, I've heard great things about MikG. I would avoid any rom that needs you to partition your SD card until you get your feet wet & know what you're doing.
Oh, and if you decide to flash the new radio update, don't pull the battery when you see the screen you've never seen before - you'll brick your phone. Just wait it out, and it'll take you back to recovery where you can then reboot normally.
(from... Evo/MIUI/Tapatalk)
Definitely look at Mik, and learn all you can about partitioning your card for APS2SD, you'll want that for the bigger ROMS, about flashing radios, very important to do that correctly, about theming, and so many other things that being rooted opens up for you.
Mik is great for sure, also kings roms. If you want something that is still htc sense there are many great developers and right now is the time because they are able to merge ports with the ota for the max performance for our phone while running gingerbread and having nifty new 3.0 sense features.
And maybe someday you will venture to the aosp world some day...

[Q] Constant Reboots...

Hello everyone. I have not been too particularly active here mainly because I have had no real reason to post. I give thanks when needed, but don't really post. Well, now I am having an issue that I genuinely cannot figure out. I recently dropped my phone and the digitizer cracked big-time. When I went to replace it, the connector for the ribbon cable broke. So instead of buying a new logic board, I just decided to buy a new Evo. However, I couldn't afford the approx. $600 for the "without a contract" price. So I went to a local Sprint dealer in my town and bought a factory refurbished Evo. Here is where the problems start.
I have been having reboots constant with this phone. I knew that there were some issues with the Evo randomly rebooting, but I have never seen something like this. It happens about every minute or so. Sometimes sooner. Sometimes I luck out and it doesn't reboot for a few hours. I notice that it does not reboot at all while it is in recovery, which is a great thing. I have tried multiple different ROMs and each one does it. I am completely out of ideas. I don't necessarily want to take it back, mainly because returning it to stock would be a pain. However, it is looking like I have to. Does anyone have any idea? It is obvious that it is not a bootloop, because I am able to actually get into the launcher. However, within a minute, it reboots. Can old radios cause it to reboot like this? It did this even with stock unrooted.
If any information is needed, please let me know. I really want to get this working without returning.
Thanks
StompySan
EDIT: It would seem that flashing my Nandroid backup of stock rooted seems to stop the rebooting issues. Could the ROMs I am installing be conflicting with the radios, causing it to reboot?
If I were you, without unrooting, I would flash the RUU for your phone. Then flash the pc36img for Amon Ra.
Before all that, I'd also back up your SD Card, then reformat it, so you are basically starting from scratch. A good idea, before you restore everything to your SD Card, but after you flash Amon Ra, is to partition it for EXT3. ( http://themikmik.com/showthread.php?5669-GUIDE-TUTORIAL-Apps2SD-Guide&highlight=partition+sdcard )
A lot of the ROMS now will take advantage of that. Once that's done, you can restore your SD Card backup to your phone.
Then I'd make a nandroid of that stock/rooted ROM, so you can always go back to it if you need to. When I nandroid, I backup everything except cache.
Figure out which ROM you want, put it on your card along with DT A2SD and the kernel you want to use. Make sure it's a kernel for the type of ROM you want, either AOSP or Sense. Personally, I keep the best rated kernel for each on mine.
Go to Wipe in Recovery and wipe everything, EVERYTHING, except the SD Card, then flash your ROM, and in the same recovery session, flash DT A2SD.
Let it boot up and let it settle in before you do anything. For me, that means once the screen shuts itself off.
Back to recovery, wipe Cache and Dalvik-Cache, then flash your kernel, reboot and let it settle in again.
THEN setup your Google accounts and preferences.
For me, I'd go back to recovery and nandroid that setup, before you've restored your apps, and make another nandroid, so you have one of your ROM's Base.
Then, reboot and see if the problem is fixed. If it is, restore your apps and see how it goes. If it starts rebooting, you know it's in your apps, so you can go back to the nandroid you made and start form there, installing a few apps at a time
Thanks for your reply HipKat.
I followed your tutorial step-by-step. However, after flashing A2SD and rebooting, it bootlooped (not like what I was getting, but an actual no boot logo bootloop). I am assuming that the ROM that I flashed didn't like the A2SD. So I restarted the tutorial, skipping the part where you flash the A2SD script. It seems like it is doing great now! I have no clue what I was doing wrong. I was using CWM. Maybe that was the problem. Could it have not been wiping it properly?
Thanks again for the quick response!
1.There are some roms that provides a CPU speed of 1.2G. With those roms and setcpu installed manually by myself, my evo rebooted just like yours. I don't know why, too.
But after I wipe everything(as HipKat said) and flash other rom, my evo 4g works just fine.
2. Before flashing new roms, wipe everything is absolutely required, otherwise strange problems will keep coming out.
What I comprehend is that flash roms on phone is like upgrading OS on your computer, you can't run windows7 with XP's configuration, right?
Hey HipKat, I've noticed that you advise people to wipe everything but the SD card in Amon Ra. You may want to note that wiping battery stats is only good if you have a full battery and plan on calibrating properly. If you wipe battery stats at 70%, your phone won't charge past 70% (thinking that it's full) unless you use an sbc kernel. Just something to keep in mind.
I'm not knocking your directions, you help a lot of people out. It's just something to think about.

You're right! I keep overlooking that because I never flash unless I'm fully charged.
My mistake on those posts. Thanks!
I was still getting reboots after doing all of that. I thought it went away, but it didnt.

This has to be it. I changed the speed to 1.15GHz in SetCPU and it has not done it since. Thanks!
EDIT: Well, it was OK, but it has started again. I have no clue why it is doing it again...
Maybe you should try some classic roms that don't require app2sd, like kings' kinged kingdom.
Before I partition my sd card, with shooter E3D and synerge, my evo also sometimes reboot, but not so frequently as yours.
And the CPU speed should be below 998MHz on my device (HW version:004)! Set your cpu frequency lower first, then try some other roms.

It doesn't matter what speed I set it to. I had it at 998 before and it still rebooted.

I am going to flash Synergy real quick. I have already tried the following:
EVOlvedROM r3chargeD
Cyanogenmod
Are there any other ROMs I should try?
EDIT: I recorded a video of exactly what it is doing. I am currently encoding it. I will throw a YouTube link up soon.
Kings' Alliance is the steadiest rom i've ever used, without sense 3.0 though. If you don't mind you could try this:

Here is the video of the rebooting problem. Sorry it is so long. It seems like the one time I want it to reboot it took forever for it to. lol.

I will try this ROM later tonight. I probably won't be able to reply tomorrow, because I have to work from 10AM to 10PM (I hate long days, lol), but will reply as soon as possible.
MIUI, for the win, man!
OK, I can pretty much confirm that it is a hardware problem. I have tried every ROM I can think of. It always seem to restart when it tries to turn on the Mobile access. If it is connected to WiFi, it will not reboot. The moment it is disconnected, it starts. However, I know it is not because of a bad radio flash. I have tried re-flashing the radios and it still doesn't work. I have restored it completely back to stock (while keeping S-Off, naturally) and it still does it. So, I am going to be returning it tomorrow. However, I have one real quick question. I know how to unroot, but I am not sure on how to achieve S-On with the Revolutionary root. Can you just flash the Unrevoked S-On zip with this root, or is there a different method? I wasn't able to find anything out on this.
Thanks again for all of your help. I really can't believe how quick people on here replied.
It isn't your hardware, I had a similar issue on my phone, it wouldn't go past the evo screen (for hours), I updated my firmware and it worked.
Clear caches, flash this rom (supersonic_4.24.651.1_odexed-signed2 google it), it will update your firmware, then flash the rom you want on top of it

You can flash S-On.zip directly from the recovery, I suggest you try out the method I mentioned in the previous post, before you go doing something drastic.

Nonono, it goes past the Evo screen. It goes past the standard boot logo. However, once you are in the lockscreen, and it tries to connect to 3G, it reboots. It is not a standard no boot logo bootloop.

If you're gonna trade it in, you don't need to unroot. Chances are no one will ever know, as long as you have a stock ROM on there.

Yeah. That's what I was reading. Plus, I rooted with Revolutionary, which doesn't have a method to enable S-On.
Last night I flashed the latest stock ROM. As soon as it booted up and got to the lockscreen, it restarted. I can't see it not being a hardware problem. I am going to return it today. Hopefully they don't notice that it is S-Off. Any suggestions on what to say if they do?
same issue
i have an old evo that is doing the same thing, i flashed the original ruu and it still does it. i just reported it lost.

Need some help after bad rom install/reset

I attempted my first rooting and install of darthstalkers rom last night. the step by step instructions were well laid out, and the process was pretty smooth. however after completing the rom install, and began getting various errors such as 'gallery not responding', 'omacp has stopped working',etc. over a dozen different errors in total. kies wouldnt connect to restore my settings, etc.
i decided to flash back to stock, and followed the instructions perfectly, which again were very easy. kies connected instantly on stock, and everything seemed ok. however im still getting the same errors as i was with the darthstalker rom. now i bought my s3 outright (its not part of any package), so i have no warranty issues, however my phone is completely hosed now. i cant send texts, cant view email, nothing. i'm honestly regretting ever doing this.
any help/tips/suggestions so that i can go back to the way i was? ive tried everything that my googlefu has led me to, and nothing has worked.

I did it last night, but in my tired confusion, i may have fudged it up. going to do it now and ill update in a few minutes. Thanks for the help thus far.
when flashing to stock through Odin you retain the same cache and therefore you can have some issues of force closes..which is why a factory reset is always best....and mandatory when going from 4.1.1 to 4.0.4
That's a very stable ROM and I'm surprised at the issues you had. I have a feeling it wasn't the ROM or anything you did persay but bad flashes happen which it why most of us have a nandroid to fall back on just in case. Sometimes a re-flash does the trick to fix problems.

Ok well i wiped cache/data in recovery mode and all seemed ok (not sure if its worth noting, but the recovery menu/screen was totally different from last night - the one last night was touch screen with ++++ before and after each menu choice, and the one today has me using the volume keys to move and power to select).
i went to do kies restore and it went smoothly, but is now sitting on the last option, 'restoring call log', for quite a while. So i guess ill update this again when kies finishes up.
10 minutes later and its still sitting at restoring call log. should i abort this?

seems to have worked. all my contacts are there, and i can send/receive texts. only issue is, none of my apps, settings, layout, wifi, etc transferred over for some reason. so i guess im stuck manually entering in all of this data. what a ****ing hassle this was.
do any of you trusted members do this for a fee? i really liked what i saw with darthstalkers, but cannot be bothered to go through this again.

Settings, not much can be done about that. It's needed to wipe them when going to a custom ROM (same goes when updating to avoid issues).
Titanium Backup can save your Wifi, apps and apps data (requires root). Also can save your texts and call logs with it.

Sounds like you booted into stock recovery which is what you wanted.
I used to think it was a pain restoring settings all the time but after 100 or so ROM's over various devices its takes 10-15 minutes to do that and install my apps form the market (I only use maybe 20 or so and maybe are one I have apk for already.
Everyone's first time is a bit awkward and messy... gets fun after you do it enough
So its possible it was just a bad install? This isnt a very technical or tough thing to do, but becomes a serious pain int he ass when things go awry. Would love to have the darthstalkers setup, though. I just hate to do it and have it all be FUBAR'd again.

Keep in mind that flashing a custom ROM also means flashing the updates (as it can always get better and there are bugs to fix), meaning that you will have to factory reset every time (which resets your settings, cleans your apps and such). So it's something you kinda have to get used to when flashing.
That's also why I suggested Titanium Backup, it saves a lot of time when it comes to apps, wifi, call logs, texts, etc. You'll still have to go through your settings, emails and accounts though.
If you wanna go ahead and give Darthstarkers another try, re-download it and make sure you follow their full instructions.

its true. the first time around is always a little bumpy. as long as you are doing things correctly and installing the correct files, things will only go smoother with time.
this is just my preference, but once i've transcended stock (to aosp), i dont mess around with kies anymore. i know you had your things backed up via that route but ask around and you'll see, there are a lot of useful apps out there that can backup and seamlessly restore everything you want after flashing.
dont give up. everyone deserves the performance and style they want on their device. next time you're ready, let us know. between myself, hednik and a few others, we can get you the best way to do this right here in one thread versus 20 different sites/threads/opinions. cheers

[Q] Crashing apps and loss of service?!

Hey guys, long time browser, first time poster, but not a reason for celebration, alas.I come to you guys out of frustration after hours of being unable to solve my issue cruising the interwebs, and the thread title kinda says it all.
To start from the beginning, I recently delved into the rooted world by means of towelroot (kitkat 4.4.2), installed xposed framework, got the modules XBlast and XPrivacy, and you might have guessed, fiddled around with each. Everything was fine and dandy until I was having issues receiving/making calls through an app (LINE, if you know it), and so I attempted to figure out what the issue was, very much assuming XPrivacy to be the culprit. Couldn't get it to work, which is when I decided to restore my backup I made using Clockwork. Should have been nice and smooth sailing, but...
Upon having it "restored" I booted on into it, which is when I got smacked in the face; as soon as I'm booted, most, if not all, my apps are reporting that they have stopped working by a bombardment of error messages in endless succession, making just browsing the home screens almost impossible. Also with this barrage came the lack of cell service, a nice white n' slashed out circle in what should be my bars of signal. I tried again to restore my phone from my backup. Same issue, but I did notice during the recovery it made mention of something like "secure_android" missing? This sent me on my hours of head banging, turning up *possible* resolutions, which didn't work. I've tried flashing the stock bootloader, gapps, and nothing. Now, my data and apps are all still there and I can get into recovery without issue, it's just the pain of not being able to actually using any of it.
I have debugging switched on on my phone, but do not have some sort of adb app installed on it, nor could I access any market place to try. I'm not so sure I would be able to install anything on my phone given my current circumstances, anyway.
Please, if any of you out there have some idea as to what is going on, I'm all eyes (as ears on a forum don't work so well)! If there are any details I may have omitted and so on, just let me know and I'll supply it--
Thank you all so much in advance for any possible steps that may resolve this issue!

Sounds like your backup was a downgrade (old version).
I would suggest doing a factory reset, test it. If that doesn't do it, use Odin to flash stock firmware (which can be found in the general section stickies).

Thanks for responding! I did try a wipe data/factory reset via CWM, then restored from there. Didn't work. I'm not sure if there is a particular order in how it should be done such as "factory reset, reboot phone into recovery, restore" or if I should be able to get away with "factory reset, restore", the latter being what I did. I also got a hold of a bootloader file and modem base band for build I747UCUFNE4, if those would be useful in any way.
If it's of any help, I somehow got the Unofficial Omni ROM 4.4.4 to work without any issue, but not quite happy enough with the overall interface of it, yet slowly adapting having installed a touchwiz launcher just to hold me over.
I've tried locating the backup CWM created on my phone so that I could store it on my computer and generate another backup as from what I read, the unpaid version only allows you one at a time, but had no luck digging through my directories. I'm currently investigating this online nandroid backup thing to see if there's anything to it.
I've also come across some file labeled "I747UCUFNE4_Stock_Rooted_Deodex" which is a zip, but I'm reading ODIN uses tar as it's compression of choice? Does this mean I should flash this file via recovery, or? Also, the file size is a whopping 920MB or so... that normal? (Edit: this is where I found the file http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2788357 which says to flash in recovery)
Thanks again for your response! I was really thinking my problem would just be glanced over.

I meant factory reset without restoring.
But now that you're back up and running, there's no need for it (unless you flash another ROM). You could flash NE4 if you wanna get back on the official ROM but there are also tw custom ROM which you can look into (you're currently using an aosp one).
As for the 920mb, yeah.. That's Sammy at its best, bloating their ROMs.

You think it would be safe to do a factory reset and try to restore just the data from my recovery? Or is it possible that the data is somehow the issue with everything going wonky?
I'm very new to the ROM thing, Omni was easy to get up and running, but actually playing with a ROM was more of a last ditch effort to see if the problem would be resolved that way and give any sort of indication as to what the issue was (still haven't the sllightest). It's currently not rooted (at least according to my root checker) and the towelroot method doesn't seem to work on it. I kinda need to be rooted if I wanted to make a nandroid, I really want to make a back up of what I currently have set in case I screw the pooch trying to get things back to "normal", yet I'm afraid of overwriting my only recovery and losing whatever data is embedded, though I'm not too deeply saddened by the thought of not having chat histories and whatnot, it would just be nice to have. Perhaps you have thoughts, or anyone else out there, on the matter? I know my first step would be to at least root my current ROM, then back up, I found this as a means to root Omni (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2672160), but how do I determine whether I'm using an ARM based or x86 based device?
Good to know the file size for the stock ROM is considered normal. I didn't even consider carrier/Samsung bloat to have such a huge impact.
Thanks, yet again!

Help, plz? (nandroid stuff)

working on a sprint note 2 (of course). Rooted, flashed twrp with Odin, clean flashed CM 13 nightly (2016.12.18). Worked well, but no LTE. Tried flashing the newest radio, lost APN access. Flashed a Sprint APN fix, no change.
So, after all that failed, I did a full wipe and format /data and /data/storage or whatev, and went to restore the nandroid backup of the stock JB. Restore went fine, no errors, but upon booting the phone, I'm hit with a never ending barrage of "this thing stopped, that thing stopped"; seemingly every process on the phone just crashed over and over and over.
As i'm typing, i'm wondering: is it the radio flash, being as the latest available was for KK, and now i'm back trying to run JB? I wouldn't think that would cause the ui to implode, logic seems to me that only the cellular service would be affected by that, but it's just now the one thing i realized that is definitely different.
Right now i'm about to push the cm 12.1 (2015.11.17) and see what happens, but I know pretty much everyone here knows volumes more about this kinda stuff than I, so I'm making a post to see what kinda options someone else could come up with for me to try.
It's not really a big deal to have the stock rom or a custom one (of course i'd prefer something newer, this device should be plenty able to handle anything I can throw at it, but...), Just need that LTE coverage. So, any and all recommendations or solutions welcome!
