EDIT: DON'T UPDATE TO 2.1 AGAIN SINCE IT WILL HANG ONE MORE TIME. WAIT FOR HTC TO RESOLVE THIS ISSUE!!!!!!
EDIT 2: BACK UPP ALL YOUR DATA FROM YOUR MEMORY CARD FIRST!!!
EDIT 3: How did I find this out? I talked to a very helpful HTC suport rep (yes they do actually exist in Sweden). He helped me do these steps and so I thought I should share this.
Ok so you got a message that 2.1 was available for your Hero - FINELY! and you installed it using OTA. And then you got a triangle with a ! in it and you rebooted and all it says is "HERO".
This is how to solve it!
Take out your memory card. FORMAT TO <span style="font-weight:bold;">FAT32</span>!!!
Download the RUU 2.73.405.5 from HTC support homepage
Run the installation.
When it fails to find your phone <span style="font-weight:bold;">DON'T EXIT!!!</span>
If you are using Windows 7 go in to c:\Users\<span style="font-style:italic;">yourusername</span>\AppData\Local\Temp
Search for ROM.zip
Move to desktop
Rename to HEROIMG.zip
Transfer to your newly formated memory card now with FAT32 file system
Put memory card into phone
Start phone holding volume down pressed.
It will now check zip fil and then ask if you want to install.
homekey for YES
After installing you have 1.5 again and can safely upgrade to 2.1 OTA
seriously.. that's complex... LoL
and you figured this elaborate method out... how?
I mean, thank you, I'm sure people will find this helpful. It just doesn't seem like the sort of thing you'd just randomly work out yourself. How did you figure it out? if it was by trial and error then my sympathies go to you and how much time you must have spent!
cheers
You should probably add "back up data from your sdcard" as first step, as I can easily imagine some total newbie being surprised that all of his data are suddenly gone.

Se my EDIT 3 in first post
Is this another method to downgrade??? I mean i have made OTA update successfully but now i want to downgrade to root my phone and i tryed everything, even GoldCard method, but nothing happens. When i try to install an older ROM to root it first and then use one of 2.1 allready rooted ROMs from this forum, I get always an error message that can't connect to my phone and also HTC Sync doesn't work...
So i'll try this method to see if i can downgrade my Hero...
Currently trying this out on my Hero "locked/unrooted" by the 2.1 OTA update.
As stated in post 1 - remember to rename the file before copying to SD - if not the device will not find the file.
Success - back on 1.5
Got a OTA prompt on first boot.
Now going to root and install a pre-rooted 2.1 image
Ohhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!11
Finally it seems that an employ of HTC Sweden gave as the solution to downgrade our Hero so we can root it....
A question: The ROM.zip which creating when you try to flash RUU_Hero_HTC_WWE_2.73.405.5_WWE_release_signed_NoDriver.exe is unique for every phone or we can rename it to HEROIMG.zip and upload it somewhere so everybody who made the OTA update to official 2.1 could use it?????
Flashed a rooted 2.1 - works perfectly
This is the way to go for those that fails to see the warning against installing the 2.1 OTA on a rooted 1.5

To create the ROM.zip i used:
RUU_Hero_HTC_WWE_2.73.405.5_WWE_release_signed_NoD river.exe
from:
ttp://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=559622
Current 2.1 ROM is from:

Better Faster Easier way
When your phone go into triangle with ! do this
1. remove the battery
2. press vol down + power
3. press back to go to fastboot
4. connect phone to pc
5. double click on ROM 2.73.405.5 from HTC
it will update to the original rom and you r done
What about apps, settings, bookmarks when downgrading this way - do they stay or you loose everything?
You loose everything...
I can confirm, with this method i downgraded from original OTA 2.1 update and i rooted my Hero...
Sorry beforehand if I have fail to make the correct assumption..
but is it possible to return to 1.5 from 2.1 on a unrooted/unbranded hero?
ok, got my answer already.
So I suppose this method can also be used to flash a custom rom without a custom recovery...
I didn't test that. I only downgraded from original and unrooted 2.1 to 1.5 and then I used a recovery image to pass a rooted 2.1

I have the the original HK 2.1 update. I have managed to run the RUU which you suggested above. I have also managed to locate the ROM ZIP and change it to " HEROIMG.zip" which was sucessfully detected.
The update process starts automatically and after a few minutes I get an error message - UPDATE FAILURE- saying that " THE MAIN VERSION IS OLDER!".
Please help.
Many thanks

Ok so that this is up front so that everyone understands.. I do not care about root and have no plans to root this phone for a while. (This is my primary phone and I need it working and not bricked)< I have personal reasons for not wanting root at this time so please don't ask.
Now my question is the following:
If I extract the rom.zip file from RUU that was leaked yesterday will I be able to just rename the file to PB31IMG.zip and place it in the root of my SD card. Then boot into hboot and apply the update?
From the threads I have found so far on how to do this state that the phone will do a quick reboot while applying this update. This is caused by the updating of hboot from what I have see. Then I'm suppose to just tell it again to apply the update. < Is Applying the update the second time safe?
Will this work to flash my phone to the new version of the android, hboot, radio and so forth? I just want to apply the update instead of waiting days or weeks for verizon to finally push it to my phone via OTA.
I'm currently with the following settings.
S-On
Hboot .77
Stock Android 2.1 update-1(not rooted)
radio 100
Additional Information.
I've tried just using the RUU but due to driver conflicts it keeps giving me the USB error. The most I've ever gotten was the phone into the bootloader then the RUU loses connection. Tried this on 3 machines now and it still fails. And yes I've installed HTC Sync only on 2 of those 3 machines and it still fails..
To be honest, I would say just wait for the OTA, Verizon themselves have confirmed it has been/will be released today 8/27. Then there will be no worrying, since you don't want root this would be the best way.

I'm sorry this has nothing to do with what you're asking, I've read, and don't know sorry man, but I do have a quick question for you. I see you have never rooted, or maybe or have, I thought maybe you hadn't for some reason, but anyway, I see you HBOOT it .77, how long have you had your phone since?
Yes I had rooted the phone recently for about 2 weeks then it got messed up but thanks to an unrevoked member I was able to recover the phone. It wasn't bricked or anything but some how the NAM was messed up which prevented me from using *228 to update roaming or my ability to activate the phone after a factory reset. I do remember it having hboot .79 before rooting though.
Update: I verified that the hboot in the stock restore img file I used had only hboot 77 in it and not 79. This means I downgraded to 77 without knowing it at first. (From the threads I have read it is stated that .77 and .79 are interchangeable so I don't think I need to worry about it when the ota comes I hope..)
I've had it for about 3 months now so I'm out of the return policy and I do like the phone and have no intention of returning it.
After trying root out for those 2 weeks I found that for me I didn't really gain anything that seemed worth it for my personal needs.
Also I like to tinker with stuff but since I'm in a 2 year contract I rather not take the risk of bricking it and having to pay for the next 2 years for service I can't even use due to my own fault of breaking the device.
Right now I'm just wondering if it is safe to apply the file that can be found in the ruu without root and without breaking the device since it has the same build number and radio number as the update that verizon has stated on the update page.

were these all brand new phones, refurbs..?
To my understanding of this whole .77, .79 HBOOT is that these two are interchangeable and doesn't matter which one you have. I was just curious because at first I used the RUU that gave me software 1.22.605.0 and the latest is 1.22.605.2 and I never got an OTA update for the latest 2.1. but I think this is normal since the servers are doing the new thing.
and from what I think, if you had .77, and got the OTA for the latest 2.1 that came out a while ago, it kept the .77, but if you did the latest 2.1 through the RUU on ur computer instead of OTA it updated the HBOOT to .79 as well.
This is how it was with the Droid Eris with the leaks and stuff which blocked you out of root.

Phone # 1 - New ... would get hotter and hotter (even when not in use) until it would enter a reboot cycle. It would also reboot randomly during the day.
Phone # 2 - Refurb ... got it with a bad speaker, but otherwise it worked perfectly.
Phone # 3 - Refurb ... still going.

Well I took the plunge and can confirm that the method in my original post does work and without a hitch(For me at least.)I did this after reading another question thread that had a guy basically asking the same thing and was recommended just to follow to step 6. I cannot link to anything yet so I will just give you the thread title that is located in the Q&A section of this forum for the droid incredible.
Thread Title: "[Q] Applying RUU update to stock phone"
The phone did however reboot the bootloader and put me into fastboot. I did not pull the battery but instead selected bootloader again and it continued the update on its own.
I'm successfully not root and s-on with android 2.2(HTC stock)
Hboot .92
Stock Recovery.
*Before you say it.. I know I'm now not able to get root till unrevoked or another dev team releases new tools for this version. I did this by choice*
*I in no way will recommend anyone to do this and will not take responsibility for your phone being turned into a paper weight* < You have been warned..
Sooooo.. anyone want to clarify how to extract rom.zip from the RUU please?
Just download the extracted ROM. It's on page 6 or 7 in the RUU thread.

did you get it?
Ive had a look around and theres loads of posts on it, but nothing which really explains what to do for this specific update
Firstly, where can i download the OTA from? i cant see a link anywhere on this forum, i must be looking in the wrong place
Im on a rooted rom and have read on here about all the problems you get when installing the OTA on a rooted rom so was hoping someone could tell me what i need to do to get it. Ive read that unrevoked will remove root afterwards, but as im already rooted, does this mean i need to flash/format my device to a stock rom first (i sure hope not )
The only reason i want this update is for the 90% battery fix which is the only thing which really annoys me about this phone atm
Thanks to anyone that can help
1. Get the 2.29.405.2 RUU
2. Flash
3. Re-root
This is THE best way of getting the update if you're that bothered about it. And you're not looking hard enough for the OTA file:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=9640589&postcount=70
As always, thanks EddyOS
Hi Eddy!
How i have to run your sig. Ruu?
1. download ruu
2. pc connect with usb cable to phone (htc sync)
3 run the Ruu
The phone is just on and normal?
thank's
If you're going to connect to the PC you need HTC Sync installed on your computer. If you don't want to install that on your PC then just connect the phone in FASTBOOT
Then just run the RUU
thank's Eddy!
Hi Eddy
Im trying to flash this now, but when i do it from the recovery console, it says:
E: No Signature (325 Files)
E: Verification failed
so i cant install the OTA
I cant install it via unrevoked as its not packaged as an image file
Can you tell me where im going wrong
Thanks
what exactly are you trying to flash?
can you give the link?
Its the link which EddyOS put in post #2 above:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...9&postcount=70
right, thats just the OTA update.
i'm assuming you're still rooted? if so, you dont want to run that.
You need to flash the RUU first as Eddy mentioned.
What rom are you currently on? and is it different to the original rom for the phone?
yeah im still rooted. My network is orange, but the last thing i 'installed' was 2.10.405.2-initd-rooted-stock-v2.zip
Are you able to link me to the RUU or whichever file i need? would be much appreciated
ok, you must have created a goldcard then?
the 2.29.405.2 RUU can be found here - http://shipped-roms.com/download.ph...9.00.32U_5.11.05.27_release_151783_signed.exe
once you've confirmed you've got a goldcard, run the RUU while you're phone is in Fastboot.
make sure you backup anything that you need as this will wip your phone and unroot.
and do a nand backup just in case...
ah excellent. thanks very much. yeah i do have a goldcard
one last question(s) though...whats a nand backup? and how do i do one?
also, can i reroot after using unrevoked?
you can do a nand backup through the recovery panels (power & vol down) or through ROM manager if you have it installed.
this should give you a backup to go back to if running the RUU gives problems.
and yes, you can root with unrevoked after you've run the RUU.
excellent. thank you sooo much for all the help
no problem, let us know how you get on....
everything seems to have gone ok just restoring all my apps now using mybackup, but the new rom is all loaded up and running fine. will let you know over the next few days if any issues arise
Good news!!!
Keep the RUU safe incase you need it in the future
lame...seems i was a bit to quick to say everything went well
so before i ran the ruu, i backed up all my apps (apks + data) using mybackup pro
however, now it doesnt restore any of the apps i saved to my SD card. When i go into the apps manager after restoring the backup, it shows no apps installed there. and when viewing all apps, it only shows the ones installed on my internal memory
Any idea why this is happening? I do have root and have restored the backup with superuser permissions
not too sure as i use Titanium.
have you tried restoring 1 by 1? you may have 1 corrupt backup thats preventing the rest from being restored - i'm sure i've read about something similar.
also, if you haven't customized your phone too much since the RUU/root, you could boot into recovery and run a full wipe again and reboot. it may help...
EDIT - you've not still got your phone connected to your PC by chance have you?
if its mounted as a drive you wont have access to your SDcard.....
basically i woke up today and saw an software update for my desire on the screen and still in my half asleep state forgot that i had de-branded phone and needed to use the goldcard to update. Anyway everything is fine except the wifi will no longer work is there anyway around this or to fix it?
As far as i am aware, to solve this problem, you need to reinstall the patch manually but this time using your Gold Card. (Yes you forget to use one on your unbranded phone... this could be the source of the wifi error)
1.) Re-use your old or create a new Gold Card
2.) Download the patch 2.10.405.2 manually
[ota] htc eu 2.10.405.2 - 2.09.405.8 - xda-developers
3.) Rename the OTA_Bravo_HTC_EU_2.10.405.2-2.09.405.8_releaseol2djq7rqarka2ka.zip file to update.zip and copy it to the root of your Gold Card
3.) Reboot in recovery mode with your Gold Card inside and select the install:update.zip file as explained in the froyo guide
How to update and install Android 2.2 (Froyo) on Nexus One (works for Desie also) – SoftSailor
4.) Reboot
5.) Hopefully works now.
Remember: Next time use your Gold Card before updating the software
i know rookie mistake right. I will do that and hopefully all will be well with my phone again.
edit: sorted
yeh that guide hasnt worked for me, the 6th step on the second guide im just getting E:error in sdcard/update.zip (status 7) installation aborted.
ive checked all the comments and made sure i haven't called it zip.zip or anything like that.
Are you sure you got the complete file.
And also, what is your software number, if it's 2.29.405.2, you probably get this error because of the older update that MasDroid linked (2.10.405.2)
I reckon if it now says 2.29.405.2 download the OTA for 2.29.405.2 and reapply it.
yeh i just realised i left out the major detail, which was its not 2.2 i was downloading it was the OTA firmware update 2.29.405.2
ive tried searching for it again with the goldcard in but it cant find anything, i also cant find an update anywhere online available for download.
Here it is, you may use a download client or just double check that you got the whole file (sometimes the downloads get interrupted)

Sorry about posting the older version of the ota rom, i should have put in a link to the most current FroYo version. Glad the fellas above put in the correct link, cheers for that guys

Hello fellow forum members;
I have done a lot of searching on the forums and still cannot find clear steps as to going about upgrading my DINC from 2.1-update1 with baseband 1.00.03.04.06 to a 2.2 working rom. Most of the time, i'll download the zip and rename it 'update' but it will fail and abort.
Initially, I rooted, then followed the walkthrough video to UNroot. Now, ive been stuck on 2.1-update1 for days and my phone will not update to 2.2 OTA and im getting extremley frustrated. THis firmware is no good whatsoever. Can anyone help me in getting the CORRECT, WORKING zip package to load into recovery?? I'll paypal you cash if you get me up and running, without quesiton. Im desperate.
Thank you in advance!
If you are still unrooted with stock recovery, then follow the instructions at http://www.droid-life.com/2010/08/31/manual-update-droid-incredible-to-android-2-2/
Be sure that when you rename your update.zip that it is in lowercase and that it's not inadvertently named update.zip.zip. Also, make sure that your sd card is formatted to fat32 rather than fat. That should put you where you need to be.
try dialing *#*#2432546#*#* and seeing if that updates it. should force a check for updates if they've been pushed by the carrier at all. works better than the check software updates in the settings.
Najaboy: Will try that right now, thank you for your replay man. My SD card is already in Fat32, so i'll dump it at the root and give it a shot.
Baram: i tried that, getting a 'success' message, yet the firmware still stayed at 2.1-update1
I will report back in a few minutes after folowing Najaboy's request.
Thanks again, guys.
Ok, got a 'Status 7' Error upon running the zip. Both downloaded files return a Status 7 error. I"ve looked up some help regarding this but the ones i've come across are not very clear, and sometimes the answer could be like...20 pages back from the first post due to down links and such.
Instantly regretting my root attempt.
Any ideas?
Check your current software build number. It should be 1.22.605.2 in order for the update to work.
My software number is infact 1.22.605.0
At this point, I'd probably just re-root and get S-OFF. After that, follow the tutorials for upgrading your HBOOT to .92 and radio to 2.15.00.7.28 via PB31IMG.zips. After that, you'll be able to use any of the 2.2 ROMs including a stock one.
It's a bit more involved and carries some risk if you don't follow the proper steps, but is the same upgrade path that I used.
The upgrade.zip path that we tried for you isn't going to work since your phone doesn't have the May OTA. I've done some searching and can't seem to find it available online anywhere and some members have indicated that VZW is no longer able to push it- instead offering certified like new replacement that have it.
Have you tried an RUU? My suggestion would be to go here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=786436 and try the "Part 2: 2.2 stock using OTA RUU"
Basically all you have to do is download this http://www.fourty.net/~berzerker/stockstuff/PB31IMG_3.26.605.1_RUU.zip
Make sure your SD card is formatted as FAT32.
Put the PB31IMG-3.21.605.1_RUU.zip to your SDCard, rename it to PB31IMG.zip
Boot into HBOOT (PWR + VOL Down) wait a bit and it will ask you if you want to update. (VOL + UP) It will then update to the stock 2.2, with the 2.15.00.07.28 radio.
Also DO NOT PULL THE BATTERY! And make sure you have a good charge.
Then you can re-root using the latest UnrEVOked, it does the S-OFF for you as well.
Hey guys i deleted some of the bloatware that came with my Desire HD a while ago and now when i go to update the software to 2.3 i get an exclamation mark inside a triangle and once i reboot its still 2.2 is there anyways to restore it to how it once was and then update to 2.3? Ive looked around and seen that if i had the zip file of the 2.3 i could still possibly do it without having to go and restore 2.2 of which i dont have a backup or even no where to start to look or how to do. Any help would be much appreciated
Are you rooted? and S-off?
Also, did you download the .zip file, or did you update it through 'System Update' on the phone?
What message do you get when trying to update? does it say its completed? or ... ?
And what FW is your phone (or software build)

no i didnt download the zip file as im unsure as to where to get it and which one is correct for my phone =( i tried the update through the system update.
no it doesnt complete it looks as if it goes to install it but after about 20 seconds the red exclamation mark appears and it will sit like that until i restart. I no its because of removing the bloatware as ive heard other people with this problem but ive no idea where to actually download the new zip file for 2.3 or even 2.2 to just revert it back completely to stock.
im rooted but not the s-off thing ive never touched that
Well if you want 2.3, here is a link :-CLICK HERE (credit goes to andyharney)
In this page, you'll find a ACE_GINGERBREAD version, which is 2.3 (its a WWE version).
This will work. But if you're using the phone on a carrier which releases their own ROMs (which is basically a small modification to some code, mostly the radio) it'll would be better to try to find a .zip file for that specific carrier (it doesnt mean WWE wont work, and wont be good, ... , it just means its better).
If you're carrier doesnt releases its own version, then download from the link above.
Thanks CodeNameUnknown1 =) i think mines unbranded i can use any simcard with it and it hasnt got all the usual carrier rubbish on it *looks at orange* how would i go about installing the zip file is it just a case of placing it on the SD card and then booting into the recovery part almost like when you root it?
