HELP PLEASE - Rom Manager and partitioning Micro SD card - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I hope I am putting this in the right place but I am getting very frustrated. Decided to bite the bullet and rooted my Desire at the weekend. As I have W7 64bit, I decided to use the Tiny Core Linux method mentioned by benko286.
I installed a Modaco ROM with A2SD+ and so far so good.
Rom Manager allowed me to install the Rom from the SD card. I then used Rom Manager to partition the SD card with a 512mb Ext3 partition and a 32mb swap partition so that I could take advantage of A2SD+.
However, when I install new programs they seem to be going to the phone memory as the space on the phone memory is going down.
I copied the Rom zip file back to the Fat32 partition on the SD card and tried to install the Rom again from scratch using Rom Manager. All I get now is a big red ? and after a few seconds the phone reboots again.
What have I done wrong?
All help gratefully received!
TIA

Apps2SD Original (Using EXT Partition)

Hey,
I came from my G1 back in March and love my desire. I recently rooted because of lack of space for apps and installed DeFrost (am now on 1.8).
I don't like FroYo Apps2SD, I get a lot of problems, not everything is installed to the SD card, widgets get missing and I find that sometimes I lose apps when transfering them from the phone to the SD Card.
I decided to Partition my SD Card into FAT32 and EXT3 and use the old Apps2SD like we used to on the G1. I'm 90% sure DeFrost supports this as it's called Apps2SD+.
Anyway, I partitioned in Linux, wiped and reinstalled the rom. The internal storage was only 148mb so I knew it hadn't picked up the EXT Partition. I then partitioned the SD card using the Rom Manager and I had the same problem, went back into linux and converted it from EXT2 to EXT3 but now the phone wont even boot and is stuck on the HTC screen.
How do I set it up to use the EXT Partition?
Thanks,
Steve.

SD card problem

got a problem and can't seem to solve it. Can anybody help please.
Have opendesire 3.2 working at the mo and had an ext 2 partition with it. All was working well until this morning.
I charged my phone and switched it on but would't boot. Tried removing batteries numerous times but still no joy. Removed sd card and it worked. So I formatted sd card back to fat 32 but now it still won't work with the sd card in(Just stays on HTC screen)
I then tried to create another partition incase that what was causing the problem with gparted. When I went into Gparted it stated that my 4gb stock sd card was only 3.5 gb and that there was no pertitions present. Looks like the end of my card has dissapeared ( Has anyone heard of this before )
Anyone any idea how to get the sd card working again?
Or will I have to buy another card.
Any help much appreciated.
It still works without sd card.
as with any memory card, you dont get all the specified space free for storage, some space is lost with the file system and sector size ect, 3.5 gig sounds about right for a 4 gig card, i use a 16 gig card and get about 14.5 gig when formatted, also your problem with the rom sounds like its cuz you dont have an ext partiton
The rom doesn't need an external partition. You can install without. When I partitioned my card with gparyed it showed as 3.5gb as fat and 512mb as ext 2. I then changed ext2 to 3 and thats when my problems started. I have formatted it all back to fat now but it wont boot.
Is this because the rom now thinks a partition should be present and it isn't?
Still got recovery, is it worth flashing the Tom(opendesire 3.2) back onto a new SD card as I have a backup of my old one on laptop?

if you haven hard reset then yeah, your rom has set itself up to be used with an ext partition, just do a hard reset, and leave your sd card out of your phone on first boot
Sorry, new to this stuff. How do you mean hard reset?
Seem to be getting by, by using guides at moment.

Sorted it. Reflashed after wiping through custom recovery and removed sd card once done. After first boot I put sd card back in and it booted. Not going to partition my card any more cause this is the 2nd card that my partition through rom manager has disappeared and can't seem to get the partition back. On a 4gb card only got 3.21gb showing now through system storage on desire.
Anyone know why this keeps happening? Or are the stock cards just utter ****e.
Tried ubuntu but even that only shows it at 3.5gb with no partitions.

Installing/moving apps to SD card

Hello all, wondering whether anyone can help. My 2.2 rooted Desire currenly has ~11MB of free space. I have just bought an 8GB micro SD card from play.com and put it into the phone.
Just wondering must install all apps to phone memory first and then move to SD card or is it possible to directly install to SD card. Which prog is best and easiest to move apps to sd card.
Thanks
Easiest to root and install custom rom which supports a2sd.
With this you aiming at apps need to have in code optimisations in order to be transfered to the SD card, and then would be using FAT32 partition - that you don't want since some apps need to be started together with the OS, and will fail to do so then since OS first loads apps and second mounts FAT partition.
Long story short - root - custom rom - Leedroid ftw
Thanks for the prompt reply. I have the modaco 2.2 stock rom. So what app would you recommened.
I just re-read your post, so you would suggest leedroid rom rathern than stock rom with app 2 sd app...?

[Q] SD Card Problem

Ok, here's the thing.
I was trying to install LeeDrOiD V3.0.7 rom for my Desire and I followed the instructions.
And there was this step: "Flash This EXT 3 Alignment patch prior to flashing the ROM"
I've done all steps and I was stuck in boot screen.
But the main problem is that my phone can't mount SD card.
Before all this (two months before), I was doing step by step "Noob Proofing Everything Desire Guide" and I was doing partition of SD card using Gparted.
So I don't know if I messed up my SD card or what?
I can easily read card on my computer, but not on phone.
Can anyone help me?
same..
I have same this problem.. gparted, Leedroid and then cant mount sd card..
I cant find solution :/

Created swap partition and set it to 0 mb?
Which size has your ext3 partition?
I have 4GB SD card and when I used gparted i set 1GB for ext3.

HELP PLEASE:
Cant update or download new apps from market to SD card.
I can only download & update apps on internal storage and then move them to SD... But If I have app on SD I cannot update or install app.. I always get - Installation Unsuccessful
I am using Leedroid NOA2SD 2.4.1. Tried to format SD card, unmount and mount SD.. nothing helps.
Titanium Backup:
Internal: 23 MB free
SD card: 1.29 GB free
SD card (a2sd): 1.90 MB free
after flashing this fancy alignment.zip you must reboot recovery and then flash the rom.zip
try it now, if it doesnt work you must re-do your sdcard
this can be done with android, boot up into any rom and go to settings>storage>format SD card - and it will restore whole sd as FAT32 (you will lose ext3)
so you need either other android phone or other SD so you can flash any rom to your current phone.
there is also an windows aplication that can do it (restore whole SD as fat32) but i dont know its name (and it is not anything alike gparted which unfortunately cant do it)
I've used SD Formatter 3.0 and I succeded in formatting SD card.
My phone can now mount SD card again.
mac - disk utilities - repair disk - might work if its just corrupted

[Q] Galaxy Y Recovery problem with SD Card.

Hey guys,
So, having a little problem with my dad's Galaxy Y. I tried to root the device this evening and when I went to the stock recovery and chose "Update from SD card" it gave me an error.
E:Could not mount /sdcard No such file or folder exists.
This happened with a Class 4 Kingston 4Gig SD card.
However, when I used another SD card(1 Gigabyte-Class4 Kingston), it worked perfectly. However, I want to use my 4 Gig card for custom ROMs and link2SD. Is there any way I can keep using my 4 Gig card and NOT get that Error?
Thanks.
PS. By the way, the SD card is working fine, and it's working in the phone OS, Windows, Mac OS X SL and Linux.

Reformat your SD Card using MiniTool Partition Wizard and make sure the file system is Fat32. Report back after you tried this step.

Done and done, still the same error. :/
I remember having the same problem with a Kingston SDHC Card, repartitioning fixed it.
Try re-moving the card when in recovery and then re-insert it and try again. If that'll not work, re-flash it to stock firmware then root the device. Re-flashing won't take that much time, between 43-46 seconds only. Everything you need is in my Samsung Galaxy Young for Dummies guide, under ROM and Kernel Flashing.
Simply format the sd card in "full" i.e. Full format, not quick format. Fat32.
Prob solved.
Try mini tool this way
1. Delete the entire partition
2.Now create new partition
3. First one for links2sd 512mb ext 3
4.remaining space for the primary memory fat32
5. Now copy your update. Zip to the card. Try again

Guys, I know how to format an SD card. Been a Linux geek for seven years now. On the topic, I think there was a problem with the previous repartition. Formatted and repartitioned it with Linux.
Solved. Thanks for the help. Cheers!
