I have recently flashed my Stock Telstra ROM on my Desire with the Modaco Custom ROM r3.1. The only issue I have now is that in 'Settings' under Language & Keyboard > Set Locale there is now no option for "English (Australia)".
This doesn't worry me too much, however the Australian standard for mobile number formatting has changed and I was hoping that there might be a hack to change it? For example a mobile number is now displayed as 041-222-2222 where as they would used to be displayed as 0412-222-222 or without the hyphens.
Is it possible to change a system file or something that can fix this up?
Cheers
Greg
I think you can use Morelocale to change your locale to Australia, should be available in the Market.
You can manually add spaces and hyphens in phone numbers. Depending on how many numbers you have and how much it annoys you it might be worth your while.

I wonder if someone can help please, I have already seen the answer to my question in either this or the MTEKK forum, but for the life of me can't find the post again.
I would like to Change the factory default operator settings that come pre-installed within the Auto-configurator App on the Atom. I read somewhere that it can store upto 18 different operator settings but these can be changed somehow. I bought the Atom in Thailand but work in Saudi so all the SE Asian operators are not really required.
Thanks.....
I did a search before asking and couldn't find anything (at least in the Hermes forums)...
My phone displays "UMTS Cingular"... is there a way to change it to say something else?
Hi
A small change in the registry:
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\RIL\OperatorNames
Add a string with your operators operatorcode in the Name field, and whatever you like in the String field.
Thanks for that
thanks also for the excellent info but how do u find out the operatorcode of my operator?
im on vodafone uk and my phone displays UMTS vodafone UK.
Any help would be greatly appriciated.
Andy..
as an addendum to your advice... I don't have a " HKLM\Software\Microsoft\RIL\OperatorNames" in my registry
Thank you,
nice tweak.., for all T-Mobile Germany users operatorcode is 26201
or look here http://www.m-99.co.uk/Mobile_Phone_...ork_Codes/service_provider_network_codes.html

Are you sure? Which prog did you use for browsing the registry?
pronor
I have tried two reg editors to be sure - Mobile reg editor I have found to never have an issue...
In my HKLM\Software\Microsoft\RIL\ directory I have APIInfo and lots of folders numbered 0 - 128
If I go up to my HKLM\comm\cellular\ril\eons.cache\ I have an OPL and a PNN dir
Not sure if that could be it ( using WM6 )
Same here, I want to change that and also do not have a " HKLM\Software\Microsoft\RIL\OperatorNames" in my registry. I am using WM6 also.
@rgreenpc and darktiger
You have to create a new directory "OperatorNames" for example using totalcommander.
still not quite right...
The registry entry successfully changes the Operator Name but the "UMTS " string is still inserted before the new operator name
Is there a way to stop this UMTS string from appearing?
Many thanks,
caruthers
you have to change \HKLM\Software\OEM\PhoneSetting\
LongnamePrefix=UMTS
here can you write whatever you want eg. 3G
the Key have to set to 1
Enable3GLongNamePrefix=1

I can confirm that this way works. I did this a while back and have had no issues.
That's great - it works perfectly
Many thanks Mosquito and maevro
It used to work for me, and I see the name I have chosen for like 5 secs, but then it switches back to AT&T. Is there something else?
yeah, i tried 3 diff reg editors, phm, ceregedit and one other, never got it to stick once. thats the carrier name. i have however managed to change the 3G name.
Hi guys, I have a touch HD in English. However im currently in china and would need to have it read chinese characters.. Does any one know how to make it recognize the chinese characters?
THanks!
A good programme I've used for a long time is CE-Star from Mobem Technologies (http://www.mobem.com/products/CE-Star.php). It will enable the display of Chinese characters on Windows devices and also give you the ability to write in Chinese via pinyin or hand writing recognition.
Not sure of a freeware solution or alternative methods.
One point to note if installing CE-Star is that it may automatically adjust your regional settings to the PRC. This will make some programmes change their menus into Chinese (e.g. Google Maps). If this happens just change the regional setting back to an English based country setting and Google Maps, for example, will change back to English.
Only two variants of English, the English (US) and English (UK) are listed under the language settings. When I used an app called "Any Locale, a switching widget", I saw way more options than what was shown in the language menu. When I selected an English (India) option in the app, the language setting in language & input reflected that change and displayed the selected language as English(India). I still cannot access half the options the app shows in the main default language settings menu. Does anybody have any input on why this is happening ? Is it because GNex was not launched in all countries that the language option was limited. Does other non-stock JB ROMs also have this limitation ? Any input on the topic would be welcome. TIA
Stock 4.1.1 and I have access to like 40 languages in the main phone settings.

Let me try to make myself clearer. There are around 40 languages shown in the Language menu, in which there are only two variants for English . (United Kingdom and United states). Where as the app is offering a lot more options for the locale, which I can set from the app, like English (India). This gets reflected in Settings -> Language & input settings -> Language, so it is working to some extent but I dont understand why I cannot set it from there in the first place. The reason I am going to such detail is because the Navigation app uses this information to set accent of the voice, but I could not set the language to Indian locale from the default menu. I am using the Yakju build which is supposed to be the international build.

That's a good question, but unfortunately I have no idea. And I didn't realize that you could access other languages just by using that app.

Digging more, I found that play store has lots of apps which support custom locales, you could combine language , country and region to create a new one, there are some which retain the setting after reboot, but yet to find one which retains the settings after reboot on Jellybean devices. These apps are handy if you bought some phone say from no-name chinese manufacturer and did not have the usual locales on them.
I tried this on the non-VZ forum before I found this one and no one was able to help. On my VZ HTC One, in Settings > Language & keybaord > HTC Sense Input > Keyboard selection, there are TONS of languages, even like 5 different Chinese ones but no Japanese If I go into Language & keyboard > Language, I have Japanese there (written as 日本語). So, I can change the system language but for some reason cannot type in it?
I *could* install the Google IME which is what I've been using until I got my One but that is not a solution it's just a workaround. The current keyboard does not allow me to switch IME unless the language is selected in the list within the Sense Input options. So that makes it very cumbersome to switch back and forth. HTC support is no use, they tell me if it's not there then I just can't use it. However I've asked two friends who also speak Japanese and they do have it (one has the JP variant, one does not). I have tried 3 different ROMs so far and have not found it.
So - does anyone know how I can get it? If not, does anyone know how I could possibly extract it from a HTC One J ROM or have a friend package it for me to install?
I'd really appreciate it, this phone is dope and I really don't want to have to give it up nor the Sense keyboard (call me crazy but I absolutely love it).
