MiniSD Card Issues - Desire General

Hi,
I have a 4GB SD card and it thinks that it has a total of 200MB on there (Its empty).
I have tried formatting it using my Mac , Linux & via the Desire itself but it continues to believe that its a 200MB MiniSD card.

Does it have a second partition?

Nope.
Its just one partition in total.

Lol sounds like a dud. Which brand is it?

ScanDisk I think.
Its the one that came with my HTC Desire a month or two ago.
Its only just messed up.

Do you have anything else that supports MicroSD, could try slotting it into another phone or something and see what that detects.

Yeap, seems like it is defective... especially since you have tried formatting on different OS platforms.
You could try formatting it again using this tool but there's probably won't make any difference
http://www.sdcard.org/consumers/formatter/
EDIT: have you tried formatting the card in a digital camera? might make a difference...

you sad that you did get it 2-3 months ago, then i think you got the warranty left. if you got the warranty left send it back

Who would I contact?
HTC?
T-Mobile?
ScanDisk?
As it came with the phone.

I had a similar problem with my card last week; it started saying "blank or unsupported SD card". I used the Support link on HTC's website (sorry can't post links as I am new) and raised a ticket. I was asked to call their support number and the person said they would like to get the phone into the repair centre to diagnose the problem. So they sent UPS to come and collect it from me and the phone's now at the service centre.
Hope this helps.

Thats interesting.
Is there anyway to send off just the SD card to who'm ever wether its ScanDisks issues or HTC's and not the entire phone?

Try running the disk management facility in windows (Right click my computer - Manage - Disk Management)
It may have a unformatted disk partition on it hence it isnt showing up the rest of the unallocated space (Most likely if its been used in a MAC and formatted in non FAT).
Delete the unallocated space then run something like HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool.
I have just had the same problem where i was missing 500mbs of my SD card and this got it all back

Well, I asked them the same thing as I was looking for HTC to replace the card for me. But they wanted to get the phone in to diagnose whether there was any problem with the phone or OS itself that was causing it.

Sometimes this happens to new cars when they are partitioned incorrectly. What you need to do is download a program called SWISS Knife.
Its a windows app, but you can run it through boot camp or VM fusion, that will detect all the partitions on your card, then you just delete tge partitions and remove and plug your sd back in and Viola!! You have a4GB card again.

4GB Card

I know the Dash doesn't support 4GB cards... However, anyone find a way around it? Shouldn't it be software based? My brother gave me a 4GB card that wasn't compatible with his Samsung phone, so I figured I'd try to get it to work.
Good luck -- T-Mobile attributes the endless-reboot-looping issue to using cards over 1GB.

i am using a 2 gig with my tmobile dash, and have no problems at all.. like the 1st post, i would love to see a 4gig card work.. good luck!
I use a 2 gig card as well, but had that endless rebooting issue with WM6 & 5 on my Dash. Fortunately, holding the END key during the bootup would jump-start the device; but that doesn't work for everyone. When I contacted T-Mobile support about it, they said they provide support for the device with a 1 gig card, and the endless reboot was a known issue with anything larger the 1 gig. Didn't stop me though FYI -- I've not run into the booting issue since upgrading my device to the HTC WM6 ROM -- though now that I've typed that, it'll probably start happening

i always though the device support was 2 gig.. but oh well.. yeah i am still using t-mobile rom w/wm6 when it was 1st released. (as we speak) i am getting ready too upgrade to the htc rom.. so i wonder if the device will handle a 4gig when using htc rom?
I haven't tried it so I don't know how the phone would handle it, but could you partition it into 2 2g or 4 1g parts?

I've been using 2GB card since day one ( Rogers S621 )
gone from original carrier's WM5 ROM -->> HTC generic WM5 -->> T-Mobile WM6 -->> HTC Generic WM6 ...etc
no problem whatsoever
my advice to those who have problem is:
When upgrade/downgrading ROMs ... take out the SD card & the SIM card altogether ...
leaving it in during the ROM up/down seems to be the cause for the endless boot
Nice try at a guess... but... nope. Had the problem from day 1 with the shipping ROM. This issue isn't always identical for everyone, and some don't run into it at all. Congratulations -- you're one of the lucky ones -- but thanks anyway for sharing your story

chaznet, i just finally made the switch to the ship rom (htc) and i havent seen any reboots.. i installed programs from the card and use it to use customize ringer for contacts... like the other poster said.. might try and take out sim and sd cardd..
Been there, done that... I'm not currently experiencing the issue, but, when I was removing either the SIM card or the SD card had no effect. As I said, pressing the END key during bootup got my device going. This along with the removing the cards, are solutions that work for some users and not others.
The 'endless-reboot' issue has been extensively covered in a dedicated topic, should you wish further clarification do a search and read all about it -- no need to repeat it all here

yes I have read the topic posted from others ... many things could be the culprit ... BUT DEFINITELY NOT BECAUSE OF THE SD CARD BEING OVER 1GB SIZE !! like you've indicated to be !!
heck !! even you yourself indicated what's causing the problem here ... not because of the SD card being larger then 1 GB !!

I've no idea what really causes it, that's just what T-Mobile support said, and you can never tell if they're feeding you a story or not. Thanks for your input though

I used to get the random shutdowns and it turned out it was the original battery that came with my T-Mobile Dash. When I switched to the 1200mAh battery I have had no problems whatsoever. I have, since day one, been using a 2GB card, so it can't be the culprit.
4GB cards are SDHC, not for Excalibur
4-32 GB cards are SDHC, a different, no backwards compatible format.
See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Secure_Digital_card
Hmmm, that might be the reason then. Thanks. However, as someone here mentioned; is there anyway to format the card into 2 2GBs cards in the compatible format?
Re-read the response, check the Wikipedia link, you'll find the answer has already been provided...

I can't see why not ???
when you plug your card into a reader ( might need an adapter for micro -->> SD size ..etc ). your card is read by the desktop as a separate drive .... use a 3rd party partition program ( partition magic ? ) and do it.
feasible in theory
I don't have a 4GB card to play around ... using 2GB is fine here

SanDisk Mobile Ultra microSDHC 16 GB

I have this microSDHC, and a serious problem, happens to the third time that when i restart my device, is result damaged and I do not see it from computer and from the device, the only way to use it is formatting can any body help me please?
Ps:actualy i,m using Valkyrie_v4.7 FireStorm,it can be caused from the rom?
happened to me exactly as you described.... I didn't know what to do... think i formatted the thing 2 times, but i couldn't get it to work.
so a lay off of it and used my 2GB Nokia microSD for a while... then i decided to check that sucker again, and surprisingly i saw that it worked... i think it got some bad sector (!!!!!) or lost a little amount of storage... but it is working perfectly now.

My Sandisk 16 gb card stoped working too one day. I couldn't read it anymore neither on my HTC TP2 nor my desktops. It was replaced by the shop according to my waranty. The new one works fIne.
I had the same issue, then it couldn't be read or even formatted on any computer at home or work, I even had my Hospital's IT department check it out. But then I found this software and it found and reformatted my 16gb so that it was not trashed, and i haven't had a problem with the card in over a year. I hope this helps.

Strange SD Card problem

I had a strange problem happen to my SD Card on my SG3. I have a Patriot 16GB class 10 card that I used on my EVO 4G for a almost 2 year without a problem. After when I got my new phone I clean all folders that I no longer needed except my pictures and some applications. Put the card in my SG3 and everything was OK. I was able to copy files take a pictures and everything seems to work the way it should. Last week I was on a trip and during the process to taking a picture I got a message that my card was removed and basically disappear. I reboot the phone and nothing happen. then a little bit later I saw another message that card was found and everything show up again. Then I check do I have all the pictures and most of them were there except on a last one was (when card disappear) basically it was look like that picture was taken a half way. So I delete that bad picture and continue. A day later it happen again but this time when card show up again instead a normal card I have that message in notification bar with a little sd card that it says Blank SD card. then if I pull down and click on it phone is asking me to format the card. I try to mount the card but got the same message Blank card or unsupported file system. Ok so I didn't have at that time my adapter to plug in to my laptop and wait until I got home to try to repair the card.
Here is what I got now and I'm not sure is phone damage the card or card slot on the phone is not good.
I use minitool under windows and GParted as well under linux. Both of them recognize my card as 60 GB Unallocated space (it is a 16GB). when I try to recreate or format both of them said successful but card is not show up. I have to plug it back and then it goes again as a 60GB unallocated space.
Does any one know how to format a 16GB card as FAT32? I mean the settings I have to use to put to get back again this card as a 16GB not as 60GB.
Sorry for the long explanation and thanks for you help in advance.
P.S. I' not rooted and on LG8 update.
Bro,did to trid any other sd?

Windows will format it just fine under Disk Management. The fact that its reading it as a 60GB... I'd bet on the card as bad. I have hours and hours trying to save thumb drives and SD cards. 97% of them had no hope. Sometimes the card reader can act up... but not likely, and the phone's kicking it out too. Try to stick with Kingston or SanDisk even if you have to pay a little more. Yes, Cards do go bad like that.

Do you think that because it was a class 10 card causing a issue? I saw a couple treads but most of the SD card that people use are class 4.

Probably 1.5 year. I got my EVO 4G back in sept. 2010 and bought the card a couple months later when rooted my phone.
Yeah, like root said, the class wasn't the issue. The different phone might have pissed it off but you really never know. I never liked Patriot myself, but then some people like them. Gotta back stuff up or have it auto upload somewhere.

When I first got my SGS3 I used my old card from my OG Droid. I got an OTA update and my phone quit working (I got the "Unfortunately the process com.android.phone has stopped working" message). I took the phone back and they asked if I had ever had an SD card in it. I said "Yes, my old card from my Droid." I was told that this is a "known issue" with the SGS3 and that any SD card I used should be formatted in the phone itself. I'm not sure if this is the issue here, but it might be.

P.S. I did play with couple more tools but unfortunately no luck at all. It is time to look for a new one.

External SD card disappeared...

So I woke up this morning, phone says SD card unplugged, please insert new...knowing that I obviously did not remove my external sd card I then proceed to check
Settings, Storage --> (nothing shows up)
Boot into recovery --> can't mount external SD card
plug it into PC --> nothing shows up
So now the question is, do I have a bad/dead micro SD card or else?
I am on CM10 which is updated nightly, that might have something to do with the SD card, I dont know.
Edit-- missed where you said you already tried directly from computer.
Might just be a dead card.
Unless it is just not being assigned a drive letter on the pc, the card is toast. If you are using windows you can got to the disk management snap in from the administrative tools and see if it is listed at all, if it doesn't show there it is fubar. Easiest way to get there is right click computer, manage, disk management. For linux or mac im sure there is a similar tool but i couldn't tell how to get there or use it.
Which recovery do you have? Same thing happened to me on 6.0.1.4 Touch. Computer still saw the card, so i pulled everything off the card, reformatted with the computer, then changed recovery. Phone saw it after that and no more problems since.

Thats just the nature of flash memory, eventually it does go bad and unlike mechanical drives which often give plenty of warning of impending failure flash rarely does. Granted 2 months is obviously not acceptable it could be just a freak thing or maybe just an inferior brand. It is also highly susceptible to static discharge, especially in a SD card type format where the pins are exposed. Although possible, i doubt a static shock happened inside the phone but it could have possibly been damaged and just took a while to completely fail.

Get a new card...i would also check on any warranty offered by the manufacturer, that goes for OP too. Depending on the brand there may be a 1 year or even lifetime warranty, some of the lesser brands might not have a warranty at all. Although i haven't followed my own advice in this category as the last 2 16 GB micro SD's i've purchased have been fairly cheap class 10's, you more often than not get what you pay for. I would also recommend going for the class 10 cards, not only do they have the fastest transfer speeds (and maybe because of this) they seem to be more reliable then their slower cousins.

Although i've never had one of their SD's, Kingston is one of the top tier memory companies and carry lifetime warranties on most (if not all) of their products. At the very least i would expect a year.

In my experience SanDisk is considered a cheapo brand but they have been around long enough to have overcome that reputation. I would imagine they also have a warranty program although i can't speak from personal experience, definitely worth checking into.
Im quite sure that my kingstone sd card is genuine..
Any possibilities that my S3 killed it?
...
Sorry for my bad english n grammar lol

I don't think SanDisk is a cheapo brand since they have been making great cards for a long time. They have a great warranty program. They will replace anything within a year for sure. I had one that you couldn't read the serial number on so they still replaced it.
SanDisk has a problem by being the most well known microsd, they are faked by chinese companies all the time and those fakes look just like the real ones. Therefore, you buy a fake, paying real prices, that looks real, and you blame SanDisk. I think that was what happened in my experience with a dead card, and they still replaced it.

You can't just format it from "My Computer". You will have to go into device manager and find it, then format it that way. Otherwise it will not work.

Micro SD Card corrupted? [write protected]

Hi folks of XDA! I am in a bit of a pickle right now with my micro SD card that I purchased a while back from ADATA.
Long story short, I purchased a 64GB micro SD card from ADATA due to my needs of a little more storage than what this phone offered. I ended up using the micro SD card as adoptable storage as I wanted to be able to use both my internal and micro SD card for 'everything'. It worked great until the night before I was suppose to go on a cruise: music wasn't being downloaded as it said it had insufficient storage space, and I couldn't take pictures with the camera app because it couldn't find the storage. I got frustrated as it was showing I had over half of the storage available on my SD card and I just did not have time to meddle with this problem; it was late at night and I simply needed my phone for taking pictures & videos & music.
I ended up doing a 'no no' and ripped the micro SD card out of my HTC One M9 without formatting or anything (literally just popped it out of my phone), restarted the phone, and surprisingly nothing was corrupted; everything on my phone was still working. But not surprisingly, the micro SD card got a little weird where when I put it back into my phone, it did not recognize it and my phone wanted me to format the micro SD card. Fair enough. I did that and it said it could not be formatted ("Volume partition disk: 179,32 public' failed..."). Fair enough.
I went onto my Windows 10 PC, slotted my micro SD card into the adapter that it came with, slid the little notch away from the 'lock' on the adapter, and my computer says it needs formatting. I try formatting it but all it keeps saying is that it's 'write protected'.
I slid the notch on the adapter to the lock, and away, as well as kept it in the middle; nothing helped, it kept saying it was write protected no matter which part it was on.
I tried using scotch tape to cover it as some people on the internet found it to work when their slid mechanism broke. Still did not work.
Tried using another adapter, and it still said it's write protected.
Resorted to using the DiskPart technique via CMD; everything shows up, the micro SD card status is online and disk 1, 58GB, 0 free space.
Tried going further into the steps (i.e. "attribute disk clear readonly" & another way, "select partition"), and it says it could not be recognized due to fatal error of hardware.
Would anyone happen to be in this situation before and was able to get their micro SD card fixed or knows a fix for me? I'll be happy to give you more in-depth detail if needed. Thank you!

Did you figure it out? I've had similar issue. I had to insert and remove multiple times until my PC recognized it... I think when I booked to Linux it worked though.
That sounds to me like the SD card is toast. I think it's built into the cards themselves that if the controller is going, it goes into read-only mode so that you can get your data off of it. I had an SD card bite it the first day I owned it a few years ago in a camera. I would use either a Linux VirtualBox or Linux Live Disc to copy your data to your computer and buy a new card.

Unfortunately I still haven't figured out how to fix my micro SD card; it's just sitting on my desk collecting dust and sadness. I'll update this thread if I happen to fix it!
Also, "booked to Linux"?

Fortunately everything important like photos were already backed up into the cloud and my micro SD card has life time warranty so I guess I'll have to end up using it. AHHH cost of shipping & time from my impatience with removing the micro SD card. My hunch is that the encryption that occurred when I used the micro SD card as an adoptable storage may have ultimately screwed it up... ://
If anyone have any clues to how to fix the problem or would like me to try things with it, feel free to post a reply

I've tried using Linux but it's not working.
I'm having Two SD-cards collecting the dust as yours .
Please reply if you find any solution for revering those adoptable sd-cards back to working.
Thank U....
The nature of solid state memory is that any errors causes a complete failure. You will never recover the sd card. Return it to the manufacturer for a replacement.

Hey! Sorry for the late reply (school exams) but mine is still collecting dust and will be probably forever. For the price that I've paid (~$30), it's not worth to replace and it's better if I just purchased a new SD card. Time + effort to get a new one is far too great for me to care about getting a replacement.

Oh I see. Fortunately for me right now, I am not using a custom ROM. I've been sticking to stock HTC and will proceed to do so until HTC stops giving out updates. I am not quite sure what you could do except try to manage with the 32GB like me by deleting all unnecessary apps, putting all your photos and videos into Google photo, and caching music that you find yourself listening to the most these days. So far it has been working well for me to the point where I don't find it necessary to have an SD card anymore! Perhaps it's a different case for you.
