I have over 1800 text messages on my phone. So I don't know for sure. But I do know the stock HTC messaging app lags quite some when trying to scroll back up to read older messages. This is for the long threads with over 600 messages. But also for small threads with just 10 messages. I tried installing Handcent SMS which scrolls smoothly through all of it, but I'm not a fan of the look.

Well, um, it may have something to do with the fact that you have 1800 messages.
Tip
Open the Messaging application
Press "Menu" key
Tap "Settings"
Toggle on "Delete old messages"
Set the "Text message limit" to a conservative number. I think 100 should be good enough for most people. (Not sure what's the big deal with holding on to thousands of SMS history...)

I really like the threaded messaging, but I don't have unlimited messages and I miss the "message length" of the old system. You know, the #/160 at the bottom.
Is there a way to display this with threaded texting? Anyone else consider this?
Yes, I know that there are other apps that do threaded texting on WM, and probably with more options like message length, but I've tried a couple and they seemed somewhat buggy or unreliable.
Thanks for any info or comments...

When you start typing, the number appears instead of "Text messages" beside the start icon
WOW.
Been using 6.1 for at least a couple months and never noticed it. Maybe because I have Wisbar and it's a little obscured.
So yeah, I feel pretty stupid now!
But thanks a lot!
Hey... when you're in threaded SMS mode and you do a reply, is there anyway to display the number of characters you're using in the replied thread?
The new MS Threaded SMS certainly displays the number of characters when doing a new SMS but doesn't seem to display when replying....
It should appear in the title bar in a reply.
Hello All,
I'm on the first 24hrs with my new HTC Touch Pro 2. Liking it so far!
Through using advanced config I've finally gotten rid of the
sms sent notification which was going to make me return the device it was
that annoying however:
Whenever I send an SMS in a threaded conversation it shows up in bold.
If I back out to all threads it shows "1 Unread" which is the one I sent (wtf).
So at times if I send three sms's to someone, it will show "3 unread" and touch
flo 3d will show 3 unread. I physically have to go in and out of the conversation
with the specific person 3 times, in order to clear it out. @#$(&@#($!!! is it just me? How do I fix this?
edit: it seems like if i send an sms I have to spend a few seconds in the conversation for it to register before I back out, and then it doesn't show
1 unread. But still. How is it unread if I thought it up and sent it?
Lastly, because of the way I cannot see threads in touch flo 3d in regards to
SMS i just completely avoid it and hit "all messages" and sms that way (anyone else hate flicking through a huge sms inbox?)
please help,
bluecoat
TF3d does have a threaded view; just click on the SMS and it brings up the conversation

? If you are conversing with MANY people, TF3d is buns. Do you know anything about my question?
hmmmm... strange, I thought it stays 'bold' until its actually sent.
Check your outbox, is the message still there when its bold?
I have the read others thread about the touchflo counter being off but my problem a a bit different. Along with that issue the touchflo counter, the counter within the text app itself is not resetting. In the past with my wing if I replied to someone the new text notifcation goes away but not with my tmobile tp2. Instead it registers their messages & my replies as unread. If I exit out of the app & go back to our "conversation" it doesnt take to the newest one from me/them but to the older part of the convo.
Edit: Only work possible work around seems to be going unthreaded or a text app such as etreme text. I havent found any real aternative text app. Ive tried different version of the arcsoft txt cabs but same results which leads to to believe its a winmo issue.
go to the conversation that shows unread messages & then scroll through all the texts with the arrows on the keyboard. look for the bolded messages, they are the unread ones. once you select them with the arrow keys they'll register as read.
i hate this issue too. if you have the damn threaded message open & are replying the the messages, it should just mark them as read.
god I hate this so much!!! I keep all my texts... often they contain information I need. But like this its pretty inconvenient. There's got to be some kind of reg mod to fix this thing...
Is there a limit to how large a thread with a contact or total SMS limit between all contacts? I currently have almost 4,000 messages in 1 thread and they're all backed up, but I want to make sure I won't randomly start to not receive messages or have SMS force closing on me. Would anyone happen to know?
Don't quote me, but I believe about 4,999 messages (sent or received), as that is what I believe to be roughly the storage size in messaging. I'd double check through menu>settings>applications>manage applications and then check inside the messaging app. I believe the max size is 4,999kb which translates to 4,999 sms if each sms (not mms) is all 120 or 160 characters alloted. Not 100% sure, but I read something along that line.

That many messages is going to slow down your phone like nothing else. You wouldn't believe how much faster your phone will run if you just delete those texts.
You guys were definitely right. My phone was really starting to slow down when there were 3500+~ messages in that contact's thread. On top of the other 750~ or so messages my phone had, it was becoming really slow opening the messenger, receiving, and sending messages. I even had a few FC's. I went ahead and set a 3,000 limit for now and it's back to "normal" operation as far as I'm concerned, but I see what you were talking about with having more than 4,000 or so total messages causing a problem.
I have Samsung galaxy S2 upgraded to 4.1.2 … Tests here apply to my machine, but you can be sure, they can be repeated on a lot of other phones. I can not be sure on which one.
When you have several SMS apps, if you sent SMS by one app, randomly one of the other apps sent same SMS again. Each app sent once… but phone sent in double, so network operator charge in double.
In table bellow in red I mark, where this issue is very likely. Example: You sent SMS with the stock ‘messaging’ app… then … these apps will potentially try to sent the SMS too… zero sms, chomp sms, go sms pro, kk sms, easy sms, messenger.
(The image will be added in some different time.)
It is likely, in different times, different programs to be activated. On more modern phones, downgraded to older android, it will be no odd; single SMS to be sent in triple, four times or more.
Usually, if you have bystander apps what sent SMS, they can try to be in service for you and turn on your 2G by themselves and promptly do them job. They no care if SMS created in other app. They just want to be in service to you. This is serious bug in most SMS apps, I know how to fix it, but let SMS apps developers contact me for details.
I notice odd cases. Here described.
Textra mark messages by other programs like sent. But they are not sent. The message sent by textra is invincible to other programs, before sent.
Inside the chomp program, messages sent over chomp are well… but other SMS apps see these messages like sent by the receiver. Some apps detect these messages like not sent, and it is unclear how they’ll send them. This research, I do it without to send SMS, because it is difficult to hunt this problem down to minimal details. Each time, different apps are activated. We are in multitask environment.
Go SMS pro import spam in the conversations. Textra filter this spam in separate conversation.
Next SMS is jealous. It do not love SMS composed in competition app. But SMS by Next are well accepted by these other apps. And they kindly can try to be in service.
Other apps see messages composed in Messenger like already sent.
Resume. SMS apps are not well designed to work cooperatively each with another.
Solution. Chose your favorite SMS app, only disable the stock SMS app, and leave single active SMS app in the phone.
Do you know better way to upgrade SMS functionality compared to replace the stock app with other one? ( Example: how to replace it with two apps? ) Let me know, in reply to this post.
Just now, chomp complained with special notification to me that it wasn’t able to sent the SMS composed in five other programs. All doubts are definitely gone. Once again: SMS apps are very friendly, industrious in care for your job, they do it in double. You compose in one… SMS sent by other, etc…
