Evo front-facing camera only does mirror images - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

The HTC Evo front-facing camera will not take an image in standard left-right format. I can see the argument for providing a mirror image to the display when setting up a picture (self-portraits), but the result (the actual picture) should not be mirrored.
If using Skype through Fring to video chat (which is really cool, BTW if just a little choppy) the video feed I'm providing to the other party is again mirrored.
It's clear there is a deliberate manipulation of the images going on here, but I can't make out why they would do that. Is there some fix, upgrade, or setting that will clear the problem?
I have not yet rooted my phone, and honestly I'm new to Android (much more familiar with security unlocking and re-flashing WinMo phones up to this point) so I might need the less-than-expert explanation if that's what's needed. ;-)
Thanks!
Rich

I remember a few people talking about this right after google i/o, I think they found a way to fix it, ill look around a bit to try to find the thread. It could be a setting in the camera settings also..
**
Looked around, but couldn't find a solution, but a few people think its a software issue, and has to do with qik and fring. Im not sure though.

nvm, i was wrong

Youtube update question

Today, I read in the news that there is a new version of youtube app available for WM phones. I have tilt 2 phone and it came with youtube preinstalled. If I install a new version of youtube ON THE DEVICE, will it overwrite the original/stock youtube installation files?
I wish if it was so, but wonder if anyone knows for sure.
What would happen if i try to install on the storage card instead?
Same question is applicable regarding other apps that came with tilt 2 like facebook, games, etc
ha, was looking for a topic on this..as for what I know, if you update an older app w/ a new, all references will point only to the new one, but I read someone say that the data for both might still be laying around (?)
I haven't got the new YouTube app b/c the URL they put in that article takes you to someones personal page and I'm too lazy to hunt for it.
My theory is that since the native YouTube app is more embedded in our phone (mine is v2.6) maybe this new app will act as a standalone and you will just have both on there. (And for you OCD people, just use a program to delete the icon from the start menu, out of sight is out of mind (it doesn't really matter! ))
edit: wait a sec, why is this new version 2.4?? I really think its standalone, I'm getting it now, hope it doesn't kill my phone.
correct URL: m.youtube.com/app
edit2: yeah, it replaces the old player for v2.4.4 Overall its a hard call which is better. The new version is totally dependent on you logging in w/ ur user info to access favorites, subscriptions, playlists, my videos (obviously) but I like how the other version, you could just favorite or mark videos w/o having to log in. Also, the old version seemed to sort the popular videos easier which is the main thing I watched.
This one has nice finger control to swipe thru the videos, but its kind of small w/ the description taking up 70% of the screen from the bottom. And for some reason the landscape is reversed from what it was, haven't looked into tweaking it yet. Oh well, no reason to re-flash to get the old version back, will give this a try for a while..
Ya i was mad at the new version at first becus the vid quality is a serius step down. However the UI seems pretty awsome. so far i like it except for vid quality. I was told that all I have to do is uninstall the new version and the old version will reappear... hav yet to try it tho
glad I wasn't the only one who noticed the MAJOR step down in video quality, really makes me want to go back to the old version. Everyone had been impressed when I pulled out w/ the original App to show them something or other, hell, I just watched the Iron Man 2 trailer yesterday and it was crystal clear..oh well!

Camera RAW callback

Hi Guys,
I've done some searching and cannot seem to find anything recent about this issue. I'm wanting to write a camera application that shoots and stores the raw camera data from the EVO.
It looks like someone has put together a class that will take the byte array and dump it to DNG format which would be ideal. However, when the callback fires, I get an empty byte array and a null pointer exception.
Now, I'm not sure it's a coding error because the jpg callback works just fine.
Some older threads seem to imply that the raw callback doesn't actually do anything. I think there is one where a google developer said they thought they should nuke it all together....but that was 2008, I think.
So can this callback actually do anything? Does the SDK from HTC give me lower level access to the camera? What are my options? I think the camera in the EVO is okay, but the jpg compression just doesn't seem good to me....
Thanks!
Crud, since I'm new I can't post a link to the google thread I was referencing above with the dev saying he'd like to deprecate raw, but the thread id is: 65191ea020f6bb27 if anyone is interested. But that was in 2/2009.....
It looks like the Android dev implies they might add or support native signal processing, which would be fine but I have no idea how one might accomplish this in Java....(isn't the point of java to work at an abstracted layer?).
Anyway, I'll amend my questions to include this: do any of the ROMs out there support either native signal processing or raw camera call backs?
Maybe this is something I need to take directly to google?

[Q] [Request] 10$ Picture Hub Picture Preview Blur Fix

Hey,
If you open up picture hub and zoom into a picture you'll see that after about 0,5 sec the pictures gets sharper.
Means MS uses a preview pic with less pixels and plus compression in the standard view to ensure a smooth run time. The main the problem is that the preview picture is such visible blury and compressed, it hurts my eyes everytime I launch picturehub. So I did some research and found some interesting registry entries.
10$ via paypal goes to the first one fixing it.
Regards.
I see what your saying but mine look just fine after zooming in about a second or less on my Focus. If yours is that bad where its hurting your eyes (I know its a figure of speech), I would think there is something wrong with your phone itself. Like I said, the pics on my phone look good even after zooming in.

I guess I didn't pronounced it correctly: If I zoom into pictures, they are fine and sharp. It's just that the fullscreen picture (without zoom) looks blurred. It's not that distracting (mostly you do not notice it) if you do not know the picture well, but due the fact that I am a Designer/Photographer the slight blur at my pictures at no zoom is parasitic.
You just have to prevent the phone from doing compressed cache images.
Regards.

So, you are running the quiz? I mean are you already knew the corresponding registry values?..

mmhh, not really. I found some eventual responsible values, but I am not in the position to do further research. Just search for image or jpeg in a registry editor. There are too many keys to list them all.

Actually, all jpeg processing is done by native (arm) WP7 program called PhotoViewer. I don't think there is an option to change the jpeg loading mode. I'm afraid it's hardcoded in PhotoViewer.

I guess I have to at least try changing the keys.
I'll post if I find something.
So that's the keys I mentioned: (click to enlarge)

Trying to modify Camera.so to bring back some 1.2 functionality

Been a lot of complaints on other forums about the crippled camera app in bada 2.0 and I'd like to restore some of the fuctionality from 1.2. Perhaps it's not actually possible as all I have seen is the KK5 app brought back to enable front camera, and no 1.2 app for bada 2.0 to restore some of the other missing functions like pause in video recording or editing options. So if this is waste of time please let me know, but I though the main problem was passing the sequrity check which has now been solved thanks to kubika. SO if possible this is the precise scope of the project:
It's not just the ability to pause a video recording, or edit anything after, there's a lot of other stuff too...
NO Image Quality selection
NO countinous/sequance shoot mode
NO sharpness, saruration, contrast adjustment... but still have auto contrast check box... as oppesed to what?!?!?
NO thumbnail or info view for picture when reviewing from cammera app
NO edit fuction for anything from anywhere as already mentioned... though admittedly if I really want to edit a pic I'll probably do it on my PC anyway.
Although a noob at this I do have some expeciance with PC's, and my understanding is that bada apps are in C++ so if one can decompile and recompile the camera app. Then ALL missing functions, with possible exception of editing that probably calls on seperate app, should be easily recoverable in the bada 2.0 camera app. I've actually checked the samsung developer website, and it gives guidelines on how to implemnet many of these functions if whishing to create your own app, so the code should be easy to reinsert even for me in their own app. The one problem may be creating/inserting buttons/tiles for the menus if not already available but simply uncalled, which I hope is actually the case since one can easily recover the record call button.
The main issue is I don't know how to decompile the two apps to read and compare the code, and then recompile them, so could someone please point me to the appropriate program(s) with hopefuly some instructions on how to use them. I think this is something that may be appreciated by many since we can now more easily upload modified apps, and is a relatively simple mod for a noob to atempt... so if anyone can offer some help with that to get me started, it's a project I'd be looking to take up .
innovative ..
liked your idea.
+1
to keep it simple, you can't 'decompile' a binary code to a c++ code, the compiling process is a one-way procedure..

[Q] Xperia M camera is out of focus when using Skype

Hello community !
I own "Xperia M" for a while and I can tell you that the 5M pixel back camera on this phone is worst than on my old "Xperia ray" ! I compared the streaming video on Skype, in the same conditions, with the same Skype application version - - the result is that Xperia ray shows much better quality, on Xperia M the video is darker and lacks in AF. I consider bad quality of the camera as an issue and I would like to know if this could be fixed with a possible camera mod ?
Thank you in advance
No answer ...yet...I think I will post this question on sonymobile website. I need to know if there can be improvement made on the camera. If not I 'll get rid of this phone.
Thanks again.
The C1905 camera really bad, i had trouble with blueish photo taken and worst in night
Looks like a case-closed on "Xperia Care" web portal. This is what I got from there, kinda chat between me and "uliwooly - Forum legend" :
uliwooly:
It's not your phone's issue, its the app, even if its the same version Skype/microsoft has to address compatibility issues not Sony
me:
Ok. Forget Skype for now. I get out of focus image when I connect directly the phone to the computer, via USB cable, using explorer as camera viewer.Or how do you explain, on the phone, not seeing a focused image in preview mode, before taking a picture - as someone mentioned in another thread.
uliwooly:
This thread was about skype, if you have other camera issues, you should post on that ongoing thread, so other users can help you, also don't forget to check this
http://talk.sonymobile.com/t5/FAQ/Capture-better-photos-in-low-light-conditions/m-p/395397#U395397
one more thing, keep in mind that we are here to help each other, we, users.
me:
I don't know if your job is to create confusion, here on the forum, among us the customers. But:
You provided a weblink - I DID NOT mention anything about low conditions.
If you have admin privileges, please change the title pointing as a general issue for the camera, not only for Skype.
To conclude, I just want to know if the camera quality - a decent quality- can be obtained by software upgrade. If it's a hardware issue I am afraid I already know the answer.
Thank you
uliwooly:
Just contact Sony directly

The feeling is that they believe the camera on this phone is working properly.
Personally, I am going to wait a while to see if a workaround will be provided here on xda-developers. If not, finally I will switch to another brand.
And this is my review for Xperia M on gsmarena:
This phone is having issues with the camera focus in preview mode. Preview mode is used when you launch the camera to start shooting photos, but before you half-press the button to adjust focus. As a result, video calls applications like Skype will look very poor.
