Hi
I'm using the stock desire 2.1 rom (update 1) with sense and am connecting to mty work's exchange server via active sync. However, I am unable to access any folders that I have created on the server other than the 'standard' list
deleted items
sent items
drafts
outbox
junk e-mail
sync issues
sync issues/conflicts
sync issues/local failures
sync issues/server failures
I do, however, have other folders that I have created for things like hotel/ train bookings and for keeping a record of online orders.
If I use the standard mail client and set the account to IMAP I can subscribe to the additional folders, but I need many of the features that come with activesync, so I was wondering if there is any way to get to see my additional folders when getting my mail via activesync?
Any help greatly appreciated.
Spud
With the default app "mail" i can see subdirectories in the same menu you see the original subdirectories.
We have Exchange 2010 if it helps.
hmmm... that's intereseting. Thank you for your reply. Will try to find out what version our exchange server is, but have just checked again and no sub folders other than those listed in my earlier post are visible
I don't quite understand where you said "other folders that I have created for things like hotel/ train bookings and for keeping a record of online orders" - what's different about these folders to the ones you can't see? Perhaps it's to do with at what 'level' you created them? (i.e., were the ones you can see sub-folders within the main mail folders and the others outside of them). I've got a few subfolders on mine (Exchange 2007) at the same 'level' in the tree as Inbox, Sent Items, etc. and I can see them fine on my Desire.

The list of folders that are in my mailbox shoud be as follows
inbox
deleted items
sent items
drafts
outbox
junk e-mail
sync issues
sync issues/conflicts
sync issues/local failures
sync issues/server failures
Holiday bookings (x)
Online orders (x)
Football tickets (x)
contacts
calendar
journal
notes
All of the folders are at the same level (i.e. they are not a sub folder of another folder). The ones marked (x) are ones created by me many years ago that I cannot see when I go to folders in exchange active sync.
However, If I set the account up as IMAP I can subscribe to all of these folders, but I obviously lose some of the features that I need from active sync.
Hope that does a better job of explaining it
Soud
Ah OK - I was getting confused as to whether you could/couldn't see these other folders The ones that I've created (e.g., 'Old Messages') are at the same level as the ones you marked with an x and they DO show up on mine. I'd love to hide the Sync Issues ones as they seem pretty pointless, but can't see a way of doing so. Is it worth trying to create a new folder and see if it shows up? (in case there's some problem when your data has perhaps been migrated across before) - at least if this worked you could just move the messages to the newly created folders. Also perhaps worth deleting the sync partnership on Outlook Web Access as well as on your Desire then recreating it?

Thank you very much for your reply.
Creating new folders on my PC at work then copying the material acrosss has worked perfectly whereas if I create the folders at home via outlook they don't show up. All very weird, but great that it got sorted in the end.
Thanks again for your kind help

Brilliant, glad to hear you go it sorted Spud!

Is there a way to completely remove a Category (either a default Category or one created by the user) used in the Contacts list and in the Contacts Filter option? Thank you.
Did you ever resolve this?
I too wish to remove some categories. Were you ever successful at finding a solution for this?
Thanks,
Dave
You can edit Categories using Microsoft Outlook and sync back to the device.
Yes, I did it!
I installed Agenda One software which is a Contacts manager. In the Options, you can edit the categories. Presumably you could just do this on the trial version and then uninstall it, though I found it to be good software and bought it.

Interesting coincidence. I had a problem early last year with a category I didn't create (Seasonal) but appeared in ThumbCal and AgendaOne. I discovered that AgendaOne was the only app which allowed me to delete categories and sent Seasonal off to oblivian.
Since then I have been using ThumbCal and iContact instead of AgendaOne and after a hard reset last week was again presented with "Seasonal" and a new one "Favorites", another category I did not create. I searched throughout my device and was going to try to delete the categories using SK Tools, but decided to reinstall AgendaOne today just for the purpose of deleting them. It's tucked away on my storage card so I guess it's not hurting anything.
FYI, both of these categories do not exist on my desktop Outlook and SK Tools could not find reference to them in my Contacts, Appts or Tasks, but did find them in the database; CategoryMainDB, in pim.vol. SK Tools did have an option to delete individual categories, but I wasn't sure what would happen if I did. AgendaOne was a safer bet.
The reason why your Categories did not appear in Outlook was probably because you were looking at the Master List, while Categories created on your device had not been added to it.

Possibly, but the first time I noticed this, in my desktop Outlook I filtered all of my present and past; tasks, appointments, notes, journal and contacts, and could not find anything referencing the category, "Seasonal". I opened and inspected every appointment on my device forward and back a full year, especially holidays which were generated automatically, and still could not find this mystery category. I was determined to find out where it came from and was dissapointed when I couldn't locate its origin. I only use six categories; Business, Personal, FYI, Holiday, Travel & Mobile (for contacts only), so its easy for me to keep track of. I have never entered anything on my device or desktop referencing the categories; Seasonal or Favorites.
I have synced three times since deleting them with AgendaOne and the mystery categories have not come back. I use ThumbCal and iContact on my device so I can't create categories. I am still stumped as to where they come from but at leasted AgendaOne is a solution. I hard reset and reinstalled/resynced everything a week ago so its not like a reference to these categories were in Outlook and then got archived.
Believe me, I would love to know where they come from so I can prevent it from happening in the future. Once I get rid of them with AgendaOne, they go away until the next ROM flash or hard reset.
Nice to know there are other ways to get the job done.
I find the easiest way to sort through Categories in Outlook is to change the view to sort by Categories (To change the view on Outlook 2003, for example, View > Arranged by > Categories)
That way any entries assigned to "hidden" categories can come into view and can be moved or reassigned.
Categories on SIM
Just to refresh this thread, if you have ever had a problem deleting unwanted categories and the above solutions did not work, take a look at you SIM card.
On my new Tilt2 I had four categories that kept appearing after a soft reset, no matter how many times I deleted them using AgendaOne and SK Tools. I checked all my PIM data and even probed my registry with no luck. And I avoided syncing for two days to make sure that desktop Outlook was not the problem.
Then I took a look at SIM Manager and found five categories; Business, Friends, Family, Other and Services. Business was already a category in Outlook, but I didn't want or need the other four. If you go to Menu/Tools/Group Name you can edit or delete any or all of the categories. I renamed a couple to existing categories in case I ever do want to dump contacts onto SIM and deleted the other two.
No more rouge categories.
Done with SKTools
Same problem resolved with SKtools/Databases/CategoryMainDB. Action/View content. Select un(desired) category then Action/Delete to delete that record from database.

the welcome screen contains a menu. the menu can launch the email input screen, which is where you manually type the email contained in an image. it can also force a manual sync, once the wizard was completed at least once before.
enter your facebook email and password here. click next to save login details to device.
socialsync will now fetch your friends list, so this takes about 8 http requests per 100 friends.
now you can link facebook friends (on the left) with pocket outlook contacts (on the right).
this is where you can import facebook friends that does not have a corresponding outlook contact already.
your sync profile has been saved and is ready to do an initial sync.
this is the actual sync process. it takes 4 http requests per contact to get their information.

oops, didn't know that Sense can do this, which version?
but yeah, mine does more then.. it can bring down new facebook friends and create new contacts on phone, but also their email address, date of birth, address, contact pic --> outlook pic, IM addresses, etc
I would love this, but the reason we haven't had this so far is that it violates Facebooks TOS and gets people banned for doing this. Will this not be a problem?

I would love this too and it would be a shame if it did violate the TOS - I can't see how it can? - my Facebook friends update their individual privacy policies to allow me to view the information they wish. As far as I can see that's all the app is fetching?
Please do continue this project if you can, even if Sense does already have this functionality - I don't have sense (the ui!)! Doesn't SPB Mobile Shell do this too?
The way I see it, is this is just a custom User-Agent. If Facebook want to go round "banning" people for using a non-normal browser, then it's not a site I'd like to use.
I imagine people will be syncing once a day or once a week.. I've been syncing like every 5 minutes for a week with no problem using my own account. I'll let you all know if I ever get "banned".
I'll add a disclaimer to first post, but brandall got it on the head; this is all information shared and authorised for by your friends.. this app just saves you having to click each profile by hand and eye to manually update your phone. It's also a bit like any HTTP cache/proxy or FasterFox.
Plus, in theory, how could they ever tell? I haven't done a byte-by-byte comparison, but I do things like Referrer tracking, cookies, random delays.. for all they know it's a scriptlet running in firefox.. and even if they deployed javascript obfuscation, this sync could just run an IE session in a hidden window and use DOM to access the data..
I like this app a lot and look forward to its release.
I also look forward to it. Been looking for something like this for a long time. Any chance it will be wvga as well?
Facebook doesn't allow any application that can access personal details other than Names and Birthdays. Phone numbers, addresses, etc are all off limits. If you account is running any app that access that stuff you can be banned. It's happened many times in the past. Just look up "Facebook sync to Outlook" or a derivitave of that.
If this app has a way around that, then sweet.
Great!
Finally a Facebook Sync! Thank you so much

First version posted to first post!
It's not .cab yet, no idea how to make .cabs..
just unzip to \program files\SocialSync\ or somewhere and run
Thanks! It feels a bit rough on the edges, but does work well!
Is it possible to choose what data to sync? For some friends, I prefer not to have their profile pictures sync'ed.

not yet, can't think how to present per-user selective importing on a 3-inch user interface
what is the most annoying rough-edge? i would like to polish that.
donations welcomed (for my personal efforts on this forum; not specifically this app)
very nice!! although i spent 1 hour linking my facebook account to outlook it is still a nice idea...
few suggestions:
1- option for exporting link information in case i need to redo all that after a room upgrade
2- also like previous comments, the name boxes are small so if i have 3 guys named Mohammad i do not know which one is which...
3- easier search in outlook contacts by allowing to type names instead of searching in a big contacts list
thank you for your effort, you are really achieving something here, although it is only for educactional purposes only
wow, why did it take an hour? i did put randomised delays inbetween requests, but they are quite low (0.1-1.5 secs).
1. to backup partnership database, just back up your outlook/pimstore.. the partnership exists because the GovernmentID field is filled in with a facebook profile url. this is the key to breaking sync relationships with a contact.
the file on device friends.dat is just a cache of friends, it can be lost with no problem.
2. i struggled to find a decent gui toolkit to use for this app. microsoft made an iphone GUI clone but it's too complex to digest (no design-time support, no docs, no support).. but in March we should all see Compact Silverlight Beta, maybe that can help. basically I use a ListBox which doesnt support left/right scrolling. maybe i'll try a ListView if that exists in CF..
3. i could maybe do that. what part of my auto-guess feature doesn't help you properly? on my phone it's a snap to find someone - it jumps to the closest named contact whenever i select a new fb friend on the left..
I have a question, which now puzzles me.
I have a spare TP2 I use for testing various things, but I did something which kinda has puzzled me. I sync-ed my spare with my computer and all the contacts transferred over, all well and good, when I went to check them, I noticed they all have pictures, just as it does in outlook. I purposely had made a folder on my TP2 I use everyday named Contacts to put their pix in their, but the spare doesnt have this folder, so I'm wondering where is this pix being stored cause the Album doesnt show me. Is this embedded in the contact info?
Have a look in the Notes field when viewing Contacts in the native WinMo application.
It's the sort of coding you might do when first programming and self taught. It is not what you would expect to see on a Smartphone in 2010. People need to realise that HTC are not a software house, they are essentially an assembler of electronic components.
I did not give them permission to corrupt my Contacts, so why have they done it?
the picture is embedded in the contact info
HTC does add extra info to the contact notes for information that outlook doesnt have a field for, like if you set it as a favorite on the contact tab it will save the action you assign to it, and it will also store facebook info info there too if you have the contact linked to a facebook account
it has nothing to do with HTC taking shortcuts or anything like that, its how they add information that outlook doesnt support while still maintaining outlook compatibility, HTC could create an entirely separate database if they wanted, but then contacts wouldnt sync with outlook
if you dont want that information then dont use HTC sense, or at the very least, dont use the contacts tab or link facebook accounts (theres probably more but thats all i have in my notes fields)
So in short, I can just get rid of the contacts folder after it sync with outlook? Well thats good to know, that will save space on my SD Card. I had a feeling it got embedded once it sync-ed with Outlook, but just wanted to be sure.
Does anyone know of a emal app that shows how many unread email you have in a sub folder? I am using the email that came with my dinc and it does not show you the subfolders you have to actually go into them. I also am trying out Touchdown and it does not show how many unread you might have in a sub folder either.
I use K-9 Mail, and it has this functionality. Be aware that this client has many configuration options (perhaps too many for the average user), but with tweaking, it should be able to do what you're looking for. If you want that behavior for all folders, you'll have to edit their folder options to push them into a first class folder, or change your push email rules, etc. I can't really say for sure what you'll want to change because there are so many options, but you'll find a configuration that will work to your liking, I'm sure.

Yes but still does not work.
How about specifying your user name as domain name\user name?
Thinking about getting the phone - but just have one question as this has been holding me back for a while now from getting an Android phone.
Could anyone confirm if folders and sub folders for TouchWiz email Exchange client are all on one level or have a tiered structure as per Outlook ie:
Folder 1
¦
------ Sub Folder 1
Thanks.
That woul be a very important information for me too!
Looking forward to detailed answers!
TIA
+1
Thanks!
I can't confirm the folder structure but can confirm that Activesync works.
Thanks!
Could you confirm some other things, too?
- bi-directional contacts sync
- bi-directional calendar sync
- bi-directional sync of recurring appointments
- html mails
- confirming appointments
Hmmm. Folder structure depends on the view you look at it in. It shows all my Exchange folders in a list in the main view (there's a quick dropdown to change folder) but in folder view, it shows in hierarchy.
Bi-directional contacts and calendar have been working since the original SGS and all synced to my phone fine. Not sure about recurring appointments but it syncs all of mine from Exchange to the phone fine. HTML mail works fine too (would be a bit ****ed up if it didn't!). Never tried confirming appointments so I can't say anything about that.

Thanks for the information. That's interesting because the default Android email client on 2.3.3 does not seem to include an option for folder viewing hierarchical folders...
I'm on my first full day so can report on this a bit now.
I'm trying out the stock client with an ES 2010 server. Some nice surprises:
- Full folder structure accessible
- Server search
- Task sync (!)
- Decent interface (don't love the dark background for the email list...)
- Syncs faster than my Atrix running Froyo
- Nice little widget icon showing unread emails
- it's got a crazy 2-pane inbox view w/preview when in landscape mode (think tablet view or desktop Outlook) - this is really cool!
- Out of office setting
On the downside, the email list widget sucks - it doesn't scroll and only shows 3 most recent (not even unread) emails so that's a bit of a disappointment. Also the calendar widgets are nice but they're too large and not resizable. Thankfully Calwidget works fine.
I'm going to try to live with it. I have a paid TD license and I had gotten used to their widgets on my Atrix, but I suspect stock is more battery friendly.
Thanks for the info. Would you mind posting some screenshots of the email client. I used Froyo, and I can't even do a search on my emails. I ended up using TD as well. Do we have search now? Is there pinch to zoom on emails? If not, can we resize font size? and How? sorry too many questions.
Thanks in advance.

Here you go...I've been using it for a few days now and NO need to employ TD which is saying a lot for a native Exchange client! The only thing missing is Notes sync which I can live without (don't change notes that often and can just drag them into Evernote).

No options there for the "calendar folders" so I don't think so. Then again, I don't have any sub-folders so I can't be 100% sure.

Actually I do not work with sub-folders in calendars, but I have several calendars in Outlook under the main-folder, that are synced to exchange.
Can you try to add a new calendar in outlook and see if you can sync that second calendar to the phone via exchange?
