Surface II or Active? - EVO 4G Accessories

So, im about to buy an Innocase. Im too drunk to decide which one I want, so im leaving it up to my fellow XDA'ians.
What do you think?
Oh yea, BTW, im waiting until Midnight Central Time, and im buying whatever you guys decide, because im impatient

Dude, go with the Active. I seriously love it. It so well designed and it's so comfortable to hold. Plus it will be compatible will seidio's car mount and docks.

BTW, speaking of drunk, that last post took me like ten minutes because of many jack and cokes. Even worse, I had to go back and edit it because I said "seidio socks" instead of "docks". I blame that on Jack and the lack of Swype. Buy the damn case

20 minutes left!!!

I was going to order the Active from Amazon, but it says it takes 2-3 weeks to ship. By that time there hopefully will be some decent cases out, because none of the ones out are that great. Anyone know of any place to order them that has em in stock? Im guessing not since its an Amazon exclusive case..

i got mine yesterday, it only took a week or so to ship

I just ordered My active. Geez, i hope it ships before it says it will (July 12)

july 12th is my bday

Active is nicer but bulky, I use it for work but take it off when not working. If you do work where the phone can easily get damaged active is worth it offers lots of protection otherwise I would definitely go with Surface as it's much slimmer actually I would probably go with no case unless you really need it LOL

Active all the way man!

Surface II all the way
sent from my evo

I bought the surface II and returned it. Purchased the Active, and love it. The extra bulk people mention is hardly noticeable, and it feels MUCH more solid. The two cant even be compared in my opinion.

I just got the updated Surface II as the first run(batch) was horrible. The second round is nice and snug. Hardly any play in it now.

sleek car mount (universal)

I am pretty picky when it comes to car mounts. I typically hate universal mounts because they are so bulky. So as i wait for for a sweet made-for-evo sexy solution, this is the next best thing that i have found. This thing folds up on itself when not in use. This video describes it way better than i can.
thanks to a nice member of the slickdeals forum, the coupon code WOOT brings the total to $5 per set (up to 3) plus $5 flat rate for shipping. Each set comes with one mounting arm and 2 buttons (for 2 devices i guess)
I have no clue how long the coupon lasts for but i snagged two, one for me and one for the wifes car so we can swap back and forth. The few reviews seem good and i figure its not that great of a risk for 15 bucks. I am going to stick on the little buttons to a case, not directly to the evo. If anyone is interested, i can post pics and stuff when it comes in.
Edit: I don't have enough posts to post links...
hmm, now i cant edit either. i am not trying to spam, just trying to share.
if you go to google and search "soundgate m2 wired for less" you will find the links to discussions of the deal on multiple sites. maybe a kind soul could post a link here too?
pretty slick...I do not like how ever that a "disc" is required that attaches it to the actual device. I wouldnt be putting it on my phone. So I would have to pick up another snap case and mod it...
But not a bad price and not a bad looking product.
It is interesting...I need something...and you can't beat $10
https://www.wiredforless.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=SOUNDM2
exactly what i was thinking! i kinda wish i bought an extra one so i could have a little nerd dock at my desk.
I have these...and I use them for my iPad...yep! It works with the iPad. I am VERY happy with these. They came pretty fast too across the country. I recommend these very much. To be honest, I am NOT a fan of putting a disc on the back...but I have a skin on my iPad so if the skin comes off so does the disc so that made me feel better about it leaving marks...weird..I know...and it comes with extra discs.... the owner is a nice guy too. Very helpful.
Just my opinion...
pretty cool you can just put that disk on another case and slip your phone into that one when your in the car if you dont want to put it on the actual phone...
hey ken987,
How thick would you say those little disk thingies are? I already ordered it but i am a little curious if these things will be low profile enough to still slide in my pocket. I am planning on sticking it to the back of an innocase ii
Wow for 10 bucks this is a great find. Thanks
Cool find and great coupon code, thank you! I already have a mount for my phone, but I will use this for my girlfriend's car. I went ahead and ordered three.... just need to figure out what to do with the other two, maybe buy a tablet?
I would say as thick as a quarter......I don't think it would be a bother. I have 2 on the back of my ipad so I can do landscape or portrait and I barely notice them when I hold the iPad in the house.

Still works, I just tested it.
also if you put 1 button on the back of a phone case, can you choose if you want it in portrait or landscape after the install? In other words i am wondering if it only seats properly 1 way and you have to stick it on right or if you can swivel your phone back and forth. perhaps portrait for music time and landscape for gps?
I bought one and the spare disk kit. I was looking for a kit and this is not bulky will be out of the way but accessible. I thought about the extra re-installation kit. I will go to home depot for that if I ever need it but that disc for the device...you never know.
The video shows that you can rotate the base 90 degrees to put your device in landscape / portrait w/o having to use a different disc.
This is a great find. $40 off with the coupon code??? I ordered two as well. Thanks for sharing OP. I'll share my experiences with it when it comes in.
Thanks just ordered one too... Great!
Got this installed last night, works quite well. For those planning on using it mostly in landscape orientation I recommend putting the disc in the middle of the EVO, not higher up as they recommend. I put the disc right over the HTC logo and it tends to hang a bit crooked in landscape because it is out of balance.
This is a pretty decent car mount option though, the disc on the back is only mildly annoying. It's pretty easy to mount and unmount, although I still wish there was a custom mount option.
Thanks to the OP for the post and the coupon!
There is an issue with the Evo as it has a textured finish to the case. The disc has a tendency to fall off when turning to lock it.
Love the mount, this is top quality stuff and very small form factor. The disk is not noticeable on the phone (yet protects the camera)
Thanks for sharing it with us, for only $5 I figured I would get two and check 'em out. I don't want to put anything on my phone though, so I think I'll find a cheap case and use it that way. You really can't beat the price though!

just found a supa good deal...

well...I guess it's all relative what a "good deal" is, but I got married on friday, graduate school in 3 weeks, and have yet to find a full time, salaried position with benefits. I'm currently turning a wrench in a shop as much as I can on weekends to make some $$, but the GI Bill has helped wonders.
In short, I stay strapped for cash. Never broke, but always lookin for a deal
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...t=301&pf_rd_p=1263465782&pf_rd_i=898334029848
Came across this just now, and didn't even hesitate to order. I figured even if the whole package sucks, I paid under 10 bucks for expedited shipping. If it works out, I've got a case til I decide which nice one to get (OB or Seidio prolly...) and car charger (already have a decent screen protector). For 10 smackeroos, I'll take that risk
Either way...not trying to advertise, hope this isn't interpreted as such, I just figured this deal had to be shared!
Looks like a good deal to me. I don't like cases though. I like my.phone like my women... naked. The captivate is too pretty to hide behind a case.

I got this one last week, will be writing a reveiw soon. The case is good, the charger is ok but is not for a Captivate, the bag says is for a Motorola Razr and the screen protector can't say nothing because I am using a different one.

thanks for the info. that's pretty much about what I expected. I wasn't gonna worry about the screen protector, as I, like you, am using a different one, mainly i bought it 'cause i figgered it might work out to a cheap, halfway decent case, and a bonus charger

Headrest Mounts - Grip Daddy or other?

I decided that I'd go ahead and get a tablet so I went with this device. I primarily got this so my daughter could watch movies on car trips and my wife can dub around the net at home. Most all the mounting discussion seems to be front-seat mounts but I'm looking to mount for the back seat, prefereable on a driver's side headrest. I was looking at the Grip Daddy (http://gripdaddymounts.com/) mounts, and debating between the two they offer but I havne't been able to find too much about them.
I was wondering if anyone had any feedback or experience with them, or alternatives they'd prefer? I'm looking for rear-headrest mounting and would prefer the ability to position it near the middlle, but directly behind the driver's headrest is also fine. ('08 Dodge Caravan)
Thanks for any suggestions, or even tips in general about mounting this thing.
Wouldn't something like this work as well for a fraction?
http://www.ebay.com/itm/320731033899?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649
Thanks for the response, I didn't articulate that clearly enough, but that's the reason I'm asking. I see a lot of mounts that are around that price, but I didn't know if there was something about the Grip Daddy and it's $60 price tag that actually made it worth it, or if the inexpensive non OEM ebay/amazon items are as good as OEM. (That's what I usually buy for my cell phones)
I haven't seen any discussion about headrest mounts at all so I was just kind of throwing it out there in case there was someone else who had experience with this type of mount. I'll just end up getting the cheap one and posting something about it.
The Grip Daddy defenitivly looks more robust, but is it worth it?
I don't know if the eBay / Chineese stuff is sturdy or loose, but usually it's "decent enough". And for the price, well, even if it's a worthless peace of junk, it's 10$ so you will still be able to put food on the table!
I will most likely buy one in the next month or so, I'll let you know if you didn't got one by then!
NOTE: The Grip Daddy is installed on the "upper" part of the headrest, that might be a problem if it's used by kids (mostly)
Well, my daughter is young so she wont be interacting with it unsupervised. We're basically only going to use it as a television for longer car trips so with her strapped in her car seat, this will be just the right distance away.
I went ahead and ordered this one. I didn't want to buy from overseas, as well as wait for the overseas shipping.

I'll post back, with some pix about how it goes.

So I got this in today and I set it up. I can't say I'm too impressed. It's probably fine, unless you hit a bump. It's flimsy and cheap. I initially mounted it with the support holding the tablet upward, but that was way too flimsy. I opted to mount it going down rather than up and I figure if I can put some sort of support behind it to make it secure, but overall it will get the job done.
If you're looking for a headrest mount and plan on using it relatively regularly, I'd spend a little extra for a more rugged mount.
I'm in my third cheap headrest mount. They all broke on the same spot, the pivot joint, different brands bought on amazon and eBay...enough. the grip daddy seems interesting and cheaper than the pad holder...can't decide yet.
Oh yeah, what broke them was my 7 year old daughter

I totally agree with you.
Mine has not broken in over a year of operation, but it makes noise. it is always creaking if it is holding a tablet. I am looking from something more robust as well and had not seen that one that you found. There was another brand out there that looked promising for a $30 price range, but I cannot think of the name right now. (Arkon? http://www.arkon.com/tablet-accessories/universal-tablet-headrest-mount.html).
Anywho, If anyone tries out the Gripdaddy, I would love to know how it works. That creaking is driving me insane!!!
I ended up buying the proclip mount. No ball joints, it's aespherical joint hold together by a screw. Can't easily break this. Expensive, but versatile, since i already have a coupke of device holders.
Proclipusa.com
do you already have it, or are you waiting for it?
I noticed that they did not list the GT 10.1 in the drop down box...

I'm waiting for it. After i got just the headrest support bits, I ordered the 10.1 holders from the main page, they're suppose to be compatible with any device holder they sell.

Okay, got it, installed one, going to install the other later today.
BEST HEADREST MOUNT EVER. Solid as a rock, at least as solid as your seat/headrest poles. It can stay as close to the back of the seat/headrest as you want, so if any removable case [edit: holder] could be slick, this is it. The other ones I bought on ebay/Amazon (4 in total, all broken by kids/3rd row seat reclining) were big, and they would leave the tablet in the way (say when the kids need to go through one door only). Not this one.
As a bonus, since I bought the slide mounts (male/female) so that the tablet mount is removable, it can leave virtually no trace there's a mount there, quick and easy in/out.
Very expensive for what it is, but you're not paying for the material, but for the engineering. At least that's what I told myself after forking close to $250.00 for it...grr.
Thanks for the follow up,but $250 is not worth it to me. We don't spend enough time in the car at this point to justify me spending that much money on a mount.
If you're happy with it, that's what counts.
anyone else find any lower priced successful options?
Go with Gripdaddy
Although Gripdaddy is a bit more pricey ($60 instead of $10), yes, there is a reason. Unlike the other cheaper models, Gripdaddy does not just break. I've had mine for several months, and it has yet to fail me. It's not made out of cheap plastic - it LASTS! I don't see the shaking either. Instead of spending tons of money replacing the cheap, plastic headrest mounts - I suggest buying the Gripdaddy once and not worrying about future problems.

ordered a new gnex, some questions

i have a nexus s running ics, however, with 2.3 and 4.0, the nexus s has always had a problem when plugged in via usb, the display would become unresponsive.
does the gnex have this issue at all?
i ordered the incipio ngp case and an xoskin, however, i really don't think i will be happy with the case. i don't like buttons to be covered, but, i need something that will provide a decent amount of protection. i scoured the accessory FAQ and watched all the videos, but, didn't see anything i liked. the reason i bought the gnex was because my focus s shattered when i dropped it. need to protect this one as much as possible or else my wife will shatter me, since i spent our vacation money on a new phone (shh, don't tell her that, lol).
i go to the gym about 3-4 times per week, so i need some sort of holder for it there, not really a fan of the armband thing i see people wearing, but if anyone knows of something decent, i'd appreciate it.
oh, and insurance, what's a cheap way to insure this thing?

[Q] Too Big?

Considering getting a Note II. Kinda concerned about how big it is. Is it easily carried in pants/jeans pockets? Any issues with it being as large as it is?
Thanks.
Those issues only last for a couple of days. This device is "what's killing every other phone on the market"
Sent From An Incognegro Galaxy Note
It's fine, just feels phone-size to me now. I have big hands, though. This phone fits better in my hands than the Galaxy S3 fits in my girlfriends hands. The Galaxy S3 feels puny to me now. I can reach 90% of the screen without changing my grip.
In some pants with shallow pockets, crouching is impaired slightly, but while walking it fits fine, and you can swap it to the back pocket if you want. I wouldn't be worried about carrying it, though. That's a minor issue compared to using it. As long as you can use it fine, you'll be happy, so go into a store and try it out.

This was my biggest concern before buying the Note 2. But it's not too big by any means whatsoever. Holding anything else now just seems waaaay too little! Fits in all my pockets comfortably.

That was my only concern as well... I got it... now my only concern is that samsung will stop making notes and I will have to go back to a puny phone and squint to us it.
Sent from my SGH-I317M using xda premium
Well, it's more portable than the original Note since it's slimmer, so I'm not sure what "too big" quantifies as. I've owned both and had no problems carrying either. The Note I was wider and the Note II is longer. I still manage with relative ease.
I was very concerned about the size too and hesitated buying it. It only took a couple of hours to get past that concern. I still have my S3 and it looks so small now, I can't imagine what an iPhone would feel like now!!
It even could be bigger honestly...
Fits in all jeans pockets(even skinny jeans but barely), dickies, dress pants at work, and can still use as a one handed phone while walking in the city once you get used to it
Remember the benefits of a bigger screen such as an awesome GPS/docked in car etc
My Note 2 made my Skyrocket look like my Captivate did when I got my Skyrocket. I was convinced I'd never be able to use or carry the Note 2 (in fact, I skipped the original Note because it was literally twice the size of my Captivate). Within a week, I was used to pocketing the Skyrocket, Otterbox Defender and all. Likewise, with the Note 2, I'm already used to pocketing it, bulky folio case and all. I'm even comfortable-ish using it one-handed at this point.
If you're really worried about the size, go to any AT&T, T-Mo, Sprint or Verizon store, or a Wal-Mart, Radio Shack or Best Buy and pick the display model up. See how it feels. Don't try to jam it in your pocket or anything, but I went into a T-Mo store before getting mine and placed it alongside my pocket to see if I was comfortable with the size.
I still recommend a holster for a device as big as the Note 2 so you don't inadvertently crack it in a deep bend, but I haven't had any issues with the size beyond appreciating how huge the screen is.

+1 for everyone's comments. Just adding this: it is completely normal to me now, handling/viewing-wise. As I haven't had it that long yet, when people at my workplace & also family first see it they make a fuss over its gargantuan proportions. I look at it and think it's totally normal though. And no I cannot bring myself to imagine going back to my teeny phone (even though I love it dearly.) Some of the older ladies, in fact, said they would like a phone like that because they could actually SEE the stuff on it. lol
I will jump on this train. I felt the same way as you, and to be honest you can return it most places, look for somebody that won't charge you a restocking fee.
I came from a Samsung Captivate and temporarily on an iPhone 4. Personally the Note 2 feels better in my pocket than the iPhone 4 because of how thin it is.
The size does make one handed control a bit tricky, but Samsung has done a good job allowing you to turn on one hand input which shifts the keyboard or dialer to half the screen.
I have had it for a week now and continue to tell myself I will never buy a smaller phone again.
Not a problem
I've had mine just over a month now and have never thought of it as being too big. I have a flip case at present but am considering getting a more bomb-proof case in the near future. I dropped it once before I had the case and the screen smashed into a thousand pieces!! I got it back 5 days ago.

I agree. This 5.5in screen is pretty great because I'm used to it now. I picked up my wifes iphone yesterday and it felt extremely inadequate. I think I could even be okay with a 6 inch screen, but after that it will be "getting out of hand".
I haven't had a problem with it fitting in any of my jeans though, I always just hold it anyway, like I did my iphone while walking.

Its a little big, but what you get for a size bump outweighs any negative you can say about the size tbh. Get a smaller device = smaller battery. This screen is pretty big but so is the battery. I guess what I'm saying is battery life is pretty good with this beast. Try it out, you have 30 days.
I'll jump in here too...
I just came from a tiny I-phone 4s...which certainly fit completely inside any pocket I have...and had the same initial worry as you...I mean this Note 2 dwarfs anything out there except a full note pad after all...and I was so used to a phone of that size...
It took me 2 days...to stop fretting over it and just use it without being so self conscious of the size of it.I had to realize I had a larger phone and get used to carrying it around and be comfortable with it.
I work in Facilities Engineering at a 7 million square feet hospital and I am crawling..stooping..climbing..sliding all over the place...all the time and all I have on it right now is the original gray flip case...and I carry my Note 2 in my left shirt pocket. Yes...I do take some precautions by holding my arm across my chest when bending over...but I would do that anyway to keep my pens..testers and other stuff in place as well...
In other words...it's not too big...but...it's not completely secure either...like a much smaller phone. I have a Seidio case and belt clip on it's way to me...the same one I used for a couple of years on my Captivate..this will eliminate having to have it in my pockets and not add much bulk to it like a lot of other cases do...while providing excellent protection for it.
Right now...your suffering from "the small phone complex"...it's true...you really are...and once you get one of these and use it for a few days..and see all they can do...you will never want to go back to a small screen again...and you'll wonder why you waited so long...
Mac
It doesn't really matter what answer anybody else gives you does it? Obviously on this forum most people will think it's not too big, many others think it is too big. Why don't you figure out for yourself which camp you are in by making a rounded rectangular slab out of wood or cardboard? The Note 2 is (rounding up to the nearest mm - your slab isn't going to be perfect): 152x81x10. That's what I did and I carried it around for a while in jacket pockets, front pants pockets and cradled it in my hand. My conclusion? It's about as big as I could go - certainly in length, I could go a little wider in width to perhaps a bit beyond the Note I though I doubt Samsung will go back to that width after the number of reviewers who say they like the narrower form factor. Still haven't bought one yet, though I'm pretty close. Reading these boards and thinking about whether I want to wait for a 32 or 64 GB internal or not (probably not).

Its big but not too big.
Really should only be a problem for one handed users with small hands.
I carried it in my pocket wrapped in a micro fiber cloth (sand will scratch the screen) untill my hip case arrived. No issues carrying the phone around.
I'm mainly a one handed user with large hands and it manageable, though I is a handful. My Galaxy S II feels down right tiny now.
I'm loving the size! No complaint at all. My girls sgs3 seems so puny after using my n2 for a few days lol
Sent from my Samsung Galaxy Note II (SGH-I317) on the infamous AT&T Network.
I'm glad you posted this thread, OP. I've been thinking about getting the Note 2 for a few days now, but I'm having the same "tiny phone syndrome" as described earlier. Of course, I've got the SIII right now, so it's not like I'd be coming directly from my iPhone 4S. But it is amazing how the N2 makes even the SIII look small! The size is almost overwhelming... LOL.
My question to you guys that already have the N2...do you feel its a worthy upgrade to move from the SIII to the N2 or am I better off just sticking with the SIII? I was originally going to get the Nexus 4, but I cancelled my order after being relegated to backordered status. That ticked me off a bit at Google.
Even if I got the N2, I'd keep my SIII, but do you guys think its worth it?
