Learning curve is steep, but I did it!
I just rooted my EVO and set up the wifi tether...using unrevoked, works but is a slow connection....but now my challenge is, can anyone tell me if I can get the phone to work in Costa Rica. I go for months at a time and would love to use it there. Their cell phone company is the government, called ICE, one provider for now. I am a novice, but can follow instructions well. Thanks in advance....great forum...I live in the US now.
if you can follow instructions, why did you post this in the wrong forum?
maybe
i saw a post on how to use the evo on cricket or metro pcs.
but the dev section isnt where it was.
(i think it was evo general or something)
agreed, this should def be in the questions board!
the main question is, does costa rica's ICE use GMS or CDMA cell phone radio technology?
if they use GSM compatible with AT&T/T-mobile, there is no way it will work because the hardware does not exist in the phone.
if they use CDMA compatible with sprint/verizon/metro pcs, there is a good chance it will work but requires some work to modify the phone and it will require the same process of steps to modify it back to sprint.
here is the guide for modifying it to work on metropcs - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=704161
welcome to XDA!

Where can I find information about porting phones to different carriers, specifically to US Cellular.
As of right now USCC doesn't have any Android phones yes I know they are coming out with two this summer. But I want a different phone than what they are offering.
If someone can guide me in the right direction that would be great and I would be very thankful. I had in mind to port the Evo or Incredible.
If someone would be kind enough to point me in the right direction I would appreciate it.
I don't have the links anymore, but I can tell you that I put my Sprint HTC touch pro on the verizon network a year or two ago. It involved running a few obscure programs on it and then installing a custom rom
I understand that that is not what your are looking to do, exactly, but it may be a place to start if you are interested. Google something like sprint htc touch pro on verizon and see if one thing leads to another
hope this helps in some way
I did quite a bit of searching before writing up this question, but if I missed something, I apologize. I did a search for "cdma" through the EVO forums and opened anything resembling using the EVO on another CDMA network.
I live in Alaska, so no Sprint network up here, but we do have ACS Wireless (Now Alaska Communications). I'm really interested and buying an EVO, but if it's not compatible with my provider, what's the point right?
I currently have a Hero, so I have the ACS PRL file and the ACS APN .xml file that I use when flashing custom ROMs, not sure if they go hand-in-hand, but that's all I got network-wise. Could I use APN Backup & Restore on the EVO with the ACS information and it'd be good to go?
Sorry for the ignorance, but assistance is greatly appreciated.
Unlike GSM phones CDMA phones are already technically "unlocked". The issue is that CDMA carriers use an auth/not-auth list. For example: ESN#1234 is on Sprint's auth list but ESN#1235 is not, it's on Cellular South auth list.
What you need to do is ask your carrier if they will allow to swap out your phone with a Sprint branded phone and if so can they assist you in doing so. This is best done at a store vs over the phone. Also search the MetroPCS threads the princple is the same but with a different carrier.
Alright, well, I contacted ACS and after dealing with the t1 techs (who are all just a bunch of natural born Einsteins) and moving onto the manager, she said that they'll transfer the ESN, but they won't help me troubleshoot anything etc, etc.
She also told me to be wary because she won a Motorola Milestone from whatever (it wasn't set up by ACS) and that when she tried to hook it up to the ACS network, she's getting a voice only connection, no data. Which I thought was weird because ACS actually offers the Milestone in their phone lineup.
Since she's obviously not an XDA visitor, I'm not really hanging on what she's said as long as I got confirmation that they'll transfer the ESN information (That's all I need, right?). My next question is that if I have the same issue, is this a simple APN fix that I can do? Or can I obtain network information from my Hero and use it to setup my EVO should a problem like this occur?
Could I follow one of the various Metro Guides?
I'm not sure what the QPST/EPST files are and how I should go about modifying them for ACS or if I even need to.
I just don't know which information I need to research and what files I need to substitute with my network settings instead of Metro's and also if any of the information can be pulled from my current Hero.
Again, any assistance is much appreciated! I, too, wish to be an EVO user.
Well it's good news hat they will do the ESN swap. From what I've been able to gather from carrier swap threads here and on other forums You could run into the opposite of what the T1 tech told you or you could get some mixed bag of services available. You could also have everything work just fine. My suggestion at this point would be to search and query various EVO carrier swap threads and pick the brains of the people in those threads to see if they could give you a generic list of what's needed. I'd also suggest doing this across multiple threads/forums and compare results as multiple sources saying the same thing will most likely be the correct course of action.
I will say again that there's no guarantee that all services will work.
I bought an S2 on craigslist (probably sounds familiar) for $100 only to find out that it was too good to be true. The phone wasn't stolen (I later confirmed this with sprint), but the jackass didn't pay his bill. Anyways, I'm somewhat familiar with rooting (rooted my E3D), so I was curious what steps I would have to take in order to get this bad boy working (sorry someone else was irresponsible sprint, but I'm not). I have a couple of junk sprint phones laying around the house, so I'm ready to experiment. Also, does anyone think it would be possible to flash it over to US Cellular? Any advice would be appreciated!
Flash it to Cricket or Metro, it's not getting activated on Sprint until the bill is paid.
I think Boost mobile is another option too.
There are posts here and there about porting the E4GT over to third party carriers, some are very detailed. Search for 'E4GT Boost Mobile' or whatever carrier and see what comes up.

Or you could resell to one of the developers here so they can test software without having to fry their own phone.

I doubt it. I didn't have to search hard to NOT find a single thing linked to this phone and US Cell so bets are that they are not a CDMA carrier.

I found this on multiple sources; US Cellular (3G - CDMA2000 800/1900 MHz)
I'm thinking it would be possible since they're on the same frequencies, but I'm a noob when it comes to flashing.

Got me there then. But, there still isn't any information concerning porting a Sprint E4GT over to US Cellular that I can find. Unless you can find a howto guide out there somewhere, it's going to be next to impossible to do. Maybe somebody will chip in here and let you know.

The lack (ok, extinction of) results on google is what prompted me to post on here. Glad it's got some attention, hopefully someone has a solution for me...
Please tread very lightly when talking about flashing cdma to another carrier. I know it can be done and is done everyday but talk about esn spoofing and such is illegal and can not be discussed on xda.
I know someone has a blog relating to the matter.. but linking or discussing the matter is forbidden on xda..

I am waiting for the Nexus 4 to get back in stock. Going to run the BYOP Straight Talk plan on it. :good:
funny thing is that if you ask that question on a Dinc forum where people are still actively using and developing for the Dinc, the correct answer should be......another Dinc! lots of used ones on eBay for under 60$. Unlocked, Rooted, overclocked and running a better OS than Stock plus EXT4 fix makes this device still a usable device today.
but on a more serious note, me using the Dinc is tied into a couple of factors-that I am on Verizon and probably staying that way but might go to one of it;s derivatives like Pageplus Cellular. this keeps me in the CDMA/3G world for the time being so any replacement would have to be compatible.
seems like this question gets asked alot-what are some 3G VZW compatible phones out there? can you take a VZW phone and bring it to Straighttalk as easy as you can with Pageplus Cellular?

I am currently on Pageplus and don't have any complaints. I have looked around for a newer CDMA phone and the prices are crazy. The Nexus 4 is the best deal I have seen but I will have to switch to Straight Talk as it is GSM only. I don't think there is an option on Straight Talk to bring your own CDMA phone.
yes, that is my understanding on Straighttalk as well-they support sprint CDMA phones with some flashing or modification but it;s not easy. They want to push everyone to GSM.
So do you have a Dinc on pageplus? how is that working? was there any complications with getting it working on their service?

Pageplus has been problem free for me. The website can occasionally be a pain to deal with when purchasing more minutes is my only complaint. The Dinc was a breeze to port and everything worked without any setup. If you need any info on Pageplus, go to http://www.howardforums.com/ and look up Pageplus. They have lots of info.
I have two Dinc's on Page Plus currently, no problems at all, OTA programming was all that was needed. I've activated a bunch of phones on PP over the years, for myself and for friends, and compared to the hacking you used to have to do on 'feature phones' to get WAP access working, Dincs are super easy. I've also done a few Droid X's and a Droid X2, also with no issues. Currently, newer phones, in addition to being quite expensive, are also 4G, which makes them a pain to activate on PP and usually requires some significant hacking. Definitely do your homework before buying a 4G phone with plans of activating it on PP.
It depends on your plans. If you plan on sticking with Verizon you could go with the Samsung GS3 or the Note 2 (I think Verizon has the Note 2). If large screens aren't your thing you can go with the HTC Incredible 4G or Motorola Razer M.
Sent from my Nexus 4
just switched my GF feature phone on Pageplus Cellular to a Dinc I bought on eBay running CM10.1. happened easier than I expected as I was able to do everything via live chat without holding forever on the phone. text messaging seems to work including notifications. have it on the TNT 1200 plan, lets see if that will work for a month.
Hey guys, I've been a reader of XDA for years now but for the first time in my history here I wasn't able to find a precise answer after spending days scouring every resource available. That said, if my question HAS been answered before, I throw myself to your mercy and beg forgiveness
As some of your are no doubt aware, MetroPCS is now offering a pilot program in select metropolitan areas where they will allow you to bring your own CDMA device to their network. I live in one of the pilot areas for this program (DFW). Depending on which resource I'm reading I gather that the toro either CAN'T be flashed to other carriers or that it can but that doing so is a very intensive process. My question is whether or not this new offering from MetroPCS changes the traditional answer in any way. After doing as much research as I could online I also went to a MetroPCS store and spoke with an associate who told me that all I'd need to do was buy one of their SIM cards ($18) and pay for the first month of service and I'd be good to go. I also had a look at the SIM card they are offering, and it looks identical in dimension to the 4G LTE SIM currently in my GNex. Being naturally suspicious of anything that seems to simple to be true, I held off on taking the plunge until I could pick the collective brain of XDA to be sure. The associate did guarantee that I would have access to calls, text and at least 3G data, no LTE for obvious reasons.
If this will legitimately work I'd be willing to do whatever necessary to make it work with my GNex. With regards to my familiarity and comfort level with the toro, I bought it within the first month it was out and unlocked and rooted it right away. I change my ROM somewhere bordering between frequently and ZOMGCRACKFLASH!!!1 so I'm fairly intimately acquainted with my phone and what to do when things go wrong. ADB, fastboot etc. are well within my comfort level and I'm the kind of guy that if you give me direct instructions on a process I can follow them precisely and not panic if it doesn't work right the first time. Backtrack, evaluate and try again. I'd like to hope that it will be as simple as switching the SIM but part of me knows better and would be willing to go through the process no matter how long or involved it would be.
On a personal note, I'm not doing this just on a whim or out of curiosity. I've been with Verizon for over four years but about four months ago my father was diagnosed with cancer and I've taken leave from my job to live with and care for him full time. Having no major sustainable income I couldn't keep up with my $170/month family plan bill (my fiance has a GNex too ;p). That said, we both love our phones and would love to continue using them as our primary devices for quite a while if it's at all feasible. Any answers or direction would be greatly appreciated.
TL/DR:
MetroPCS: "Here! Magic SIM make stubborn toro work on our network!"
Me: "I smell either a trap or witchcraft..."

Thanks for your time
you would need to modify the VIA Chipset firmware to work for metroPCS. there is a thread about this somewhere, just search for VIA chipset, or VIA or something like that in the title.
LTE would not work. period. different frequencies.
In short, metroPCS guy = idiot.

Thanks very much! I'll do some research into modding the VIA firmware and go from there. I sense a project for me coming on
