How to change the boot images without ADB?

How would it be able to do this? I've seen terminal codes floating around, but none of them look like they'd be replacing the proper files for a cupcake build (old RC33 builds I believe, long lost now!)
I'm running TheDude's 1.3 RC2. I've seen plenty of ADB commands, however I've never been able to get ADB to work on my computer, and I don't feel like putting more pointless hours into it
So how would the terminal commands work, and what would the pre-requisites for the files have to be? Thanks!

I'm pretty sure it uses ADB, hence why I'm asking...Fastboot IS ADB

yea fastboot is the only other way that I know of!!

it wont use ADB, fastboot is like an alternate route...

Step number two of those directions: "2. Get ADB setup and working. Read here. "
Let's clarify. I cannot get ADB to work, at all, on my computer. Fastboot doesn't work because I can't get ADB to work. Moreso, I just realized that I can't even find my data cord.
Either way, the point of my post is to find a way to change the boot animation at start up, without having to use anything but the phone and maybe some photo editing software.
So how can we do this?

You do not have to have the whole sdk(adb etc..) for fastboot to work you do have to have a driver running for android found in the sdk or here http://dl.google.com/android/android_usb_windows.zip .
The boot animation is found in /system/framework/framework-res.apk/assets/images,android-logo-mask.png and android-logo-shine.png are the images you wanna edit.Dont believe you can get it back on your phone without the sdk set up with adb working though as you will either have to resign an update or push the edited files back somehow.
Edit:without a data cord I think this is an impossibility I dont think you can go through the process needed on your phone,dont hold me to that though good luck man.

Alright, I just confirmed the location on the phone. So if I upload a file onto my SD card, and overwrite it through Terminal, what do you think that'll do? I'm not big into the Themes section, I'm into the Development section, so I'm not sure what overwriting will do to my phone.

Actually you might be able to get away with that.Try backing up framework res in terminal type:
$su
#mount -o remount,rw -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
#cp -r /system/framework/framework-res.apk /sdcard
Now the .apk you want is on your sdcard root pull that onto a computer unzip it with 7zip.In the framework-res folder there are some more folders go to assets then images edit those two images to your liking.Then go back to your framework-res.apk that you backed up add .zip to the end,right click it and choose open or explore navigate back to the images folder and paste your edited boot images in there.Now remove .zip so it is framework-res.apk again put that back on your sd cards root.Go to terminal and type
$su
#mount -o remount,rw -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
#cp -f /sdcard/framework-res.apk /system/framework
#reboot
If all goes well that should work.

Lost you at naming it as a .zip. I can't explore or open the file, as Windows Vista doesn't know how to handle it. Any ideas?

right click-> open with -> WinRAR
Or go to Folder Options and uncheck "Hide extensions for known filetypes" (you should do that for all folders.... its a bad idea not to because a virus may look like *.doc instead of *.doc.exe anyways its also more convenient)

Well if you're bricking phones, I wouldn't recommend trying it again

[GUIDE] Install Portable ADB In 5 Easy Steps

No ADB knowledge needed. Just follow instructions.
1. Download mini-adb Here
2. Extract that and put it on your desktop.
3. Go download HTC sync Official Page or HTC sync Direct Download and install it. If you are NOT HTC, then download whatever you need to get the drivers needed for your phone onto your PC (like samsung Kies)
4. Plug your phone into your computer and make sure debugging mode is on.
5. Now go to your mini-adb folder on your desktop and double click RunMe.bat
6. When the black command prompt window pops up, type the following:
adb devices
7. If it lists your Device, then you did it!
8. To push any file, make sure you place it in the same folder as your RunMe.bat, and the command will be
adb push WHATEVERTHEFILENAMEIS /WHEREEVERYOUWANTITTOGO
For example, to push a file called libSwypeCore.so into /system/lib/
Adb remount
adb push libSwypeCore.so /system/lib/

why not just install Android SDK from http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html
and you got ADB right after the installation.
By the way if you wanna push something to /system, you have to "adb remount" first to set it "r/w"

When I click runme it opens for a split second and then disappears

I so wish i could of found this earlier to save me the 4 hours of WTF moments i was having.
Also beats not having to install the SDK of 31megs not counting install/setup as well.

Same boat..I saw your post on Jan 20th in the Guide for ADB thread, which is really nice..
But I got to the same point(you also outlined in that thread) of after uninstalling the previous Android usb drivers on my system, and trying to choose a specific location to look for a x86 driver, I was left with Windows not allowing me to click 'OK' to denote the USB driver folder from the Android SDK that I wanted to scan. Not sure what was up, but I was elated to see the link to this thread in your sig.

I assume you find the apk, find the lib files, and push stuff to places?

LOL I wiped my laptop cause it had viruses and I forgot how to install ADB so I had to click my own link. LOLL

K I got it. You can only flash a radio if you have S-off.
Download the zip file for the radio. Put it into your SD card. Boot up in recovery. Choose flash zip file. Choose radio zip file. Done.
No adb required.

This archive has some kind of weird ".exe" file. What is this, some kind of balmervirus?

This is an older thread but I'm hoping someone can help me. I had adb installed on my old win7 pc and I had the my nexus drivers installed and everything was good. A month ago I got a new pc that is running win8 and I've had nothing but trouble ever since. I cannot find nexus drivers that will install on windows 8. Is anybody else out there running windows 8 that can help me? The VZW driver exe file would not even install for me and I ran it as an administrator.

Yeah... I also gave win8 a try...
I reverted back to win 7. Sorry, can't help you there bro. Have you tried downloading the nexus toolkit and installing gnex drivers using that toolkit?

Try this: In Windows 8 install the drivers with Windows 7 Compatibility checked. This did the trick for me while testing adb and rooting a samsung galaxy tab on my windows 8 x64.
I found this tip on only one forum after trying many other tips and drivers around for more than one day and it worked. So all credits to this poster.

[Q] flashed ICS

ok so i got the leaked ICS flashed on my device and I really like it!
so my question to you all is "what is next?" I am going to want to use cyanogen roms for this when he gets it out so what can I do to get ready to further prepare for that. Like I said all i did was flash ICS and lost root like supposed to. I have not gone in and added bootloader or nothing like that as I am not sure what to do first.

when i go to root the device using method i got it to work but now trying to update Superuser it says it cannot find currently installed su binary.
EDIT:nvm I know what I did....I am going to reflash ICS and then factory reset again and I should be good to go to fully get root

Install root explorer and try placing the attached file in the /system/bin/ folder (remove the ".c" file extension), then try updating it again.

This is where it gets tricky download "url it wont let me post yet" for your OS and extract recovery_thor17_403.img to the root of your platform-tools folder for instance mine is C:\android-sdk\platform-tools
Once completed on your PC open a command prompt as an administrator and navigate to your platform-tools folder from cmd prompt e.g. cd c:\android-sdk\platform-tools and hit enter.
i followed the site dl what i needed but I dont have the c:\android-sdk\platform-tools on my pc anywhere. what do i need for it or is it on my tab.

This is for your PC. You do not necessarily need the android sdk for it to work. Just place the recovery image in a folder with adb.exe and fastboot.exe, open up a command prompt, then navigate to that folder.

Hello everyone!
Here's another release thread for y'all!
What is this?
This is a flashable TWRP recovery for the Optimus G Pro.
Special thanks to @djrbliss
You can safely flash this to your phone's recovery and enjoy modding bliss!​
How do I use this, and where do I get it?
Good question!
There are two ways to use the files provided here.
To Flash to Recovery:
I've created an easy installer for all you Windows folks!
Download this: http://downloads.codefi.re/thecubed/lgoptimusg_pro/gkatt/recovery/e98010g/easy-twrp-e98010g.zip
Extract it to somewhere on your computer.
Enable USB debugging on your phone, if you need the drivers I've included them in the "files/drivers" folder in the zip
Run the 'install.bat' script.
Check for any errors, if it was successful, you can 'adb reboot recovery' or use an app on your phone to get you into TWRP now!
Profit! (and realize that this was pretty easy!)

What can I do with this?
Right now, the possibilities are unlimited. Once a security-lax boot.img is released, we can flash that through recovery and let the modding commence.
Please remember though, modding /system with the stock boot.img will result in a security error!​
What works, and what doesnt?
I have not tested external SD cards, since I don't have one with me at work.
I have also not tested backups or restores in TWRP yet.​

Touch doesn't work? You have the ATT version, right?
That'd be very strange if it didn't work because of something in my kernel... it's pretty much just stock...

yup, AT&T version, but it happens when i type in adb reboot recovery

Everything works so far tried backing up restore flashing and external sd... very nice work I will keep playing to see if i find any bugs

That's weird... I've been testing with that exact command and it's not doing it.
Can you possibly pull the kernel logs and pastebin them?
Do this while you're booted in recovery:

adb shell
dmesg > /sdcard/twrp_kmsg.txt
[press ctrl-c after a few seconds]
adb pull /sdcard/twrp_kmsg.txt

Can you check to ensure that you have the ADB driver installed for your system? It is possible that your desktop hasn't installed the ADB interface while the phone is in recovery mode.
Start -> devmgmt.msc [enter]
Look to see if you have any unknown devices or "Android Phone" entries with no driver installed. That should do the trick.

Here's an interesting question... if you flash CWM instead, and press the softkeys at the bottom of the phone (the normal back and menu buttons) does anything happen? It looks like your touchscreen is being brought up successfully (despite the "[ 8.270257 / 03-05 11:00:29.766] Reflash Completed. Please reboot." line)
If softkeys work in CWM, then it means that something in TWRP isn't registering your touchscreen right. I'll look into that, should be fairly straightforward.
If softkeys don't work in CWM... that means something more strange. That means my kernel (or the boot commands I'm using) aren't compatible with your phone... which is indeed possible, since there are many revisions of each phone. (I hope this isn't the case!)

CWM works perfectly, i can navigate through all the menus using the softkeys

when running the command "adb devices". nothing gets found.
EDIT - also when i get into the ADB sideload section of TWRP, my device stays stuck at "starting ADB sideload feature..."

What is your PC's OS.. Where did you get adb and fastboot??

the fastboot still seems to work as i tried re-flashing TWRP. it was successful. but it still just seems to stay stuck at "Starting ADB sideload feature..."

Ok do this move everything from the folder platform-tools should be fastboot.exe and adb.exe and a few other files to the root of your c drive....
than open your CMD window as admin... make sure you open as admin... than type

to move to the root of you c dirve and then type

adb

sorry for all your trouble! the reason behind my problems was that my computer needed to be restarted to refresh my drivers. i was then able to mount and push my rom through ADB. whew! thanks so much people! im booting up already. no bricks here! thanks to all of you guys!!
