Hi Guys,
I have been following this forum for years, but have never had the need to post til now.
Coming from a G1, I've just made the transition to a glorious Desire on a Orange UK 'Panther' tariff, from Phones4u.
One of the highlights of the tariff is fee access to their Orange Maps app (supposively pre installed), which I'm told is a semi-decent sat-nav software. But I found no reference to it, or any other pre-installed Orange crap on my phone. After spending over 30 mins on the phone with an strong indian accented Orange Rep named 'Ricky' (suprisingly better informed then the usual monkeys*), it seems I was sold a generic Desire phone from Phone4u with none of Orange's pre-installed crap....YESSS!!!
Here is the issue, it seems you cannot get access to the Orange Maps app from a non-orange branded phone. More specifically you can not access h**p://orangeworld.co.uk which has links to download it from a generic phone. Even though i'm paying for the service as part of tariff.... frekkin Toasters!!!**
In my determination to stick it to the man, I have found what may be a solution, but do not know how to apply it to the Desire. The following thread with a non-obvious title: "How to install Orange Maps on non Orange Firmware" (google it, can't hyperlink it, as I'm a new poster), has a solution for a Samsung phone and I'm wondering if I could get it to work on the desire:
The fix.
1) Enter Admin setting menu *#5239870*#
...........
5) goto number 7, UAgent
should look something like this:
SAMSUNG-S8000/S8000
XEII2 SHP/VPP/R5
Jasmine/1.0
Nextreaming
SMM-MMS/1.2.0
.......
change the second line to this:
POIG1 SHP/VPP/R5
so it now looks like this
SAMSUNG-S8000/S8000
POIG1 SHP/VPP/R5
Jasmine/1.0
Nextreaming
SMM-MMS/1.2.0
.....
save and exit.

what is a uAgent and how do I change it on the Android OS? Will it even fix my issue?
Whilst the maps is a feature I want, I'm not desperate enough to cancel my contract => goto new contract with Orange phone with Orange ROM. So It'd be great if someone could help.
Many Thanks,
Digital_Apoc
Update: Ok so it seems I can't access orangeworld.co.uk via WiFi on my phone but CAN over 3g if I switch off the WiFi??? Still going the the maps page gives me "Sorry byt Orange Maps will not work on your handset...." though the desire is on the support list...

Text from Orange...
"Welcome to Orange and your Panther plan. Get started and setup your inclusive services by clicking h*tp://orangeworld.co.uk/r/panther"... lol
I had that installed for around a day before I flashed my desire with the generic Rom to get rid of all the orange cr4p. If I remember it looked just like google maps which is free unless someone can tell me differently.
I tried to set it up, as it was free, on my Orange branded handset. I kept getting an error about not being able to set it up correctly; this is quite common on this phone it seems. The app itself was installed but the maps would not download/configure correctly.
I rang tech support for another issue and they told me that the phone is listed as not compatible with Orange maps, god knows why it comes installed on their ROM. So until they either update the program (or more likely enabled a flag saying the Desire can use Orange maps) we probably won't be able to download it. That said you might be able to get the apk from somewhere? May just be tech support were lying/drunk
I flashed my handset with a generic ROM to get rid of all the Orange garbage anyway and now I can't even re-install the app itself using the link from Orangeworld (You can text 'Orange Maps' to 247).
I seem to only be able to access the orangeworld portal using a gprs/edge connection, it doesn't like umts it seems. Maybe someone with it stilll installed could try setting it up over a 2g data connection?
Sorry I can't be of more help, good luck =D
I used it when I first got my phone but it was pretty rubbish to say the least, google maps navigation is a much better product.
With Google maps navigation available, what's the point in sticking with Orange Maps providing you don't download more than your FUP permits.
I hate what Orange have done to this phone. The salesman on the phone even lied to me saying that they were using a generic ROM.
Are you sure you can't visit h**p://orangeworld.co.uk on a generic rom? Make sure you go via the Orange APN and not through a wireless network as that is not allowed.
I'm a bit confused by this.
My Orange Desire (I'm on panther) once charged first time, I tried to connected straight to the net and the phone seeked the settings and worked without any intervention. In fact I think it did it right at the beginning when gmail wanted to synch.
A few hours later I debranded, and upon reboot.. the same thing, was all automatic.

yes this ^
why do you need to go to orangeworld anyway? there's nothing of any value there
Orange Maps
You don't say but I assume yo're in the UK? FWIW I tried the Orange App and it wasn't a patch on the updated Google Maps with Navigation. It was sloooow and poor definition. So IMHO, forget it!
The commets about only connecting to Orange World through the 3G I can also confirm, but I have no idea why they'd want to do that...?
I agree use google maps navigation, coming from using TomTom on WinMo I prefer Google Nav, only thing I miss is the speed camera updates and custom voices, the google one is crap
Hi there
I'm trying the
*#*#2432546#*#*
*#*#checkin#*#*
code on the phone dialer, on my htc desire stock rom on Orange, people are reporting that it created a notification saying 'Checkin successful' and a triangle icon in the top bar. But Im not getting anything at all. I type the code in and after entering the last * the code dissapears and I get no notification or message.
Can anyone confirm that on Orange this code does not work?
I've just tried it on my Orange de-branded with stock ROM and I get nothing either. What is the 'Checkin' anyway?
I thought it was INFO
*#*#4636#*#*
Its one of the method people are using to check for OTA updates, the other method being settings>About Phone>Check for updates
the code I believe is a 'checking in' service that looks for updates from google rather than htc or the carrier. Although I might be wrong on that aspect.
I've read a few people using the code and recieveing key updates (such as the update to 1.21 (im on 1.15)
its a bit of a mystery at the moment, still learning my way around the android OS, and tinkering as much as possible.

Not working on my Asia 1.19 Desire...
tried it on my desire (orange stock rom). nothing happens.
sounds like a bummer, looks like we'll play the waiting game with htc and orange as to when the OTA update gets pushed out. Either that or switch ROMS which IM not that keen on doing, other than stripping out all the crud that Orange put on the build, I mean come on Orange if I don't want your game demo's I should be able to remove them.
Orange have said that the update may not even come if they can't get the branding to work alongside it. I ended up de-branding too, and I guess it's not working because there isn't an update?

Orange said that?, what an incredible stance to take, cripple the whole android OTA experience simple so they can slip in some bloatware and subsidised demos that no-one ever uses anyway. the two most useful apps for Orange 'Orange Wednesdays and Your Orange' arn't even part of the initial orange software they're both found on the marketplace.
Looks like I'll be debranding soon then, im more than a little annoyed at Orange.
Im not fully surprised that the Froyo OTA update isn't available via Orange yet, however on T-Mobile, my girlfriend has no update pushed out to her Desire , whereas my buddy also on T-Mobile got the OTA update 2 days ago, both on stock roms, so the OTA isn't necessarily limited by carrier. I expect this has been talked to death in other threads mind you.
Working for me

This also aint working on my desire from vodafone (1.19.161.5)
does nothing at all, not even a red triangle or owt on mine

Hello!
I'm writing to you all as a recent user of my new htc desire which I
orderd from germany on Handyattacke.de and using it in Sweden, Gothenburg.
Handyattacke said it was a sim unlocked mobile with T-mobile software branding.
Now to the problem.
When I yesterday started to use the phone i quickly realized that the phone refuses to accept my Swedish opperators APN details... I've tried with diffrent simcards with same results.
I've even spoken with a nice lady on HTC customers support, who haven't been able to help and checked that my swedish operators (which I'm also working for) are correct.
What the hells should I do.
I want to be able to use my mobile data surf.
A friend of mine spoke about rooting the phone. Would that change and coulod the rooting chnage the software into swedish firmware.
Would appriciate all the help I could get.
When you say that it "refuses" to accept your operators APN details what do you mean?
I'm assuming you are entering them manually into Menu->Settings->Wireless & Networks->Mobile Networks->Access Point Names? Once you've entered them, are you pressing menu and then Save?
Regards,
Dave
That's correct mate and on order from the bird at Htc support center.
However. When I save and try to connect it says that the connection fail...
I'm so botherd and handyattacke.de even reply my questions.
Is there any thing I can do.
Can I root to a swedish firmware and should I say, deleate the T-mobile software branding or does the problem occur from some other reason?

Why does my galaxy nexus have a Vodafone section in the market?I was led to believe it is a pure Google device with no bloatware? Is there anyway to remove or do I need to start flashing roms? What is in this section of the market normally?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk
Market simply reads you are on voda network
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
I have the same on my unlocked GSM Galaxy Nexus. It is simply because we are on vodafone. It can't be classed as bloatware because none of those apps are forcibly installed, they are just shown if you are interested. They can be installed and uninstalled and all the apps are available to anyone on the Android Market I believe.
Yeah showed up on mine when in stock and also under custom roms so not bloatware, just an option in market based on your network.
Oh my..
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
I thing is not related to the network because, when I had my Nexus One, buyed to Vodafone Spain, it shows that option in the market, but, when I change the rom, from the European version to the American version, the Vodafone section in the market dissapeared. Same with, por example, my girlfriend´s Xperia X10 and my brother´s Xperia Arc, they buyed them to Vodafone, and there was the Vodafone section in the Market, but when they changed the fimrware to the Generic Firmware, the option changed for a Sony-Ericsson selection...
You really need to refresh your knowledge of bloatware buddy...
Its not bloatware... the Market knows what SIM you have in the device, and it serves you the Vodafone area on the Market.
T-Mobile US users get the same...
This is actually really useful. Its not bloat and it doesn't at all affect your updates lol.

As I said, in my brother´s Xperia Arc S, with the generic firmware, with the Vodafone SIM inserted, this section corresponds to SE, instead of Vodafone. So I don´t think is related with the inserted SIM..

The se arc that has se bloatware all over it? How strange that it shows se stuff instead if everything else??? [/sarcasm]
On a serious note as said above it is just because there is a voda sim in it. Put another sin in it and it will change
So my handset showing it in an AOSP ROM means it's bloatware does it
As said, it reads the SIM card and displays accordingly
As I said, in my old Nexus One, with the American firmware (all stock, no root or anything else), with a Vodafone SIM inserted, the market shows nothing related to Vodafone...
What version of the Market?

With my Sensation, SIM-free, it shows HTC on the home screen of the Market whereas on the Vodafone-specific ROM it shows Vodafone.
This is different from the 'Selected by Vodafone' as that ONLY comes up if you press 'apps' on the Market homescreen. It's not on the first screen when you open the Market
As said, the Nexus is 100% Google if you have a yakju handset and the 'Selected by Vodafone' will still be there even on a custom ROM (which I am currently using) so is NOT bloatware
I think this is a valid concern because think of it this way. If the market is beinf altered based on the sim, then what apps are being excluded due to your sim card? Anyone remember the nexus one? Tethering apps werr filtered out of the market with an att sim, even though no att section showed up; the phone was never even sold by att.
What other "changes" to the market is present just based on your sim card that maybe we havent noticed...?
It should be the true full market for all devices in existence.
There is no doubt that certain apps are available in certain locations and on certain networks. This is how it has been since the beginning. For example, Skype calls on 3G were initially available to 3 customers in the UK. If you didn't have a 3 sim you couldn't download or use it to make calls using 3G connection, this was due to certain legal issues. Another example is Google Currents not being available in the UK or Google Voice not working like it does for US customers and Google Music not available across the pond just yet. The list goes on. The fact of the matter is if you think Market is hiding something from you then it will be hiding something from everyone depending on various factors from handset to the network you're on. If you aren't happy with that then try another marketplace like the Amazon market, even there you will see some differences.

Hi there. I own an unlocked, rooted t 989 Samsung Galaxy SII which I bought in the US. I recently moved to the Netherlands, and got a new simcard with Vodafone. The problem: I can't get my data to work.
I have tried (almost) everything, so prepare for a read. Here's the list:
- Sim card is fine, I tried it in a old phone and 3G pops up instantly
- Rebooted, pulled battery, turned mobile connections on/off, handpicked network, etc, etc, all the basics.
- Got the APN settings from Vodafone. Tried them manually, resetted them, automatically, turned it on, turned it off.
- Going online through Wifi works.
- Under settings-Status it reads under Mobile Network State: Disconnected. But I know that the phone detects the network correctly. It can distinguish between UMTS and GPRS here.
- So there seems to be no trouble with the phone being incompatible with the network. I read online that other people had NO trouble using their T989 in Europe.
- I tried inserting my old American pre paid T mobile sim card and turn roaming on. No luck.
- A lot of other people with the same problem tried to link it to Easy Battery Saver. I tried updating, uninstalling and going into its settings to find out what it could be, but nothing.
The last thing I can still try is to factory reset, unroot and try to get the phone to its most original state and see what it does. But before I triple wipe all my contacts, pictures, apps, etc, I want to make sure I did absolutely everything to try and fix this beforehand. Being a noob here, I can't post any links but I trust you I tried.
The people at Vodafone are of no help whatsoever. I hope you geniuses could help me any further.
[Edit] And sorry for posting this in General Chat. If a mod could move my question to Q&A I'd be most thankful..!
I am having the exact same damn problem! it started with being unable to send a simple text message yet having data. now it says it is searching forever

Try flashing a different radio/modem then an american one?
@decko5 Nice to see I'm not the only one, but that doesn't help us yet .
@doug36 Besides the fact that I'm running a stock ROM that should be compatible with no issues, I'm not sure how I'd do that. I can flash a separate part of the kernel? That sounds like a very tricky thing to do.

It's actually pretty easy. You can flash most radios via ClockworkMod Recovery. I couldn't find any threads with a list of Galaxy S-II radios here on XDA, but I found one over at RootzWiki for you. http://rootzwiki.com/topic/2725-radio-samsung-galaxy-s-ii-radios-updatezip-updated-20-aug-2011/
Just find the corresponding one to your geographical location and carrier (Google is your friend) and follow the steps.
Good luck and hope it helps!
(p.s. you should definitely look to see which radio you currently have so that you can download a backup of it before you go flashing radios.)
Thanks for that very helpful post! I've raped and butchered Google, but I'm still having trouble finding out which modem I should download. There seem to be so many and the post on RootzWiki gives no guidance to which is which. Any wisdom on this? I'm in the Netherlands, so Western Europe, on a Vodafone network.
By the way. I fully wiped my phone and installed Team Kang's Juggernaut 5.. No luck, same problem. What I found really, really weird is that it was instantly in Dutch. (Which is ok, I speak Dutch) But I don't remember ever selecting a language. How does it know? Besides, I'd rather have it in English .
What I did find out is that I'm still using a old firmware, UVKID, instead of UVKL1. So I'm restoring back to my previous ROM and trying to update. I'll see what happens. If that doesn't work, I'm going to restore my phone to stockest of the unrooted stocks and try and update.
If that doesn't work, I'll have no option but to send the phone to T-mobile.
I'll try the modem update as soon as I understand what I'm doing . But it does sound promising. Thank you so much for your help, it's greatly appreciated!
Hi guys,
I've updated my firmware to UVKL1, still no luck. Anybody who can tell me which radio I should try on this Vodafone network in the Netherlands?
I am from India and had faced this similer issue with many of my android phones specially with captivate and infuse.......Here what i always did to connect data network.
Just uncheck the use packet data network box in mobile network settings and try to move out from that area (say u are in ur office and going back home) and check the data in settings.
This thing has worked for me always, I don't knw if its related to the OS or to the network provider but this has helped.
Have u tried any other network sim card on ur phone ?
An update for other people that might be looking for a solution in the future. It turns out to be a clear Vodafone problem. I tried a different simcard from a different network (both T-mobile Netherlands and KPN), and they instantly worked without any trouble.
I went back to a different Vodafone store in Amsterdam, and they were much more helpful than the first one. The sales guy told me he had seen the same problem with AT&T iPhones on the Vodafone network.
I called Vodafone, and they have been very nice to me. But they haven't found a solution yet and are looking into it. They see me registering to the network, granting me access, but still my data doesn't work. They've also told me that they will let me cancel my contract for no cost if they don't find a solution.
So problem remains unsolved, but at least there's some light at the end of the tunnel. I was close to buying a new 500 dollar phone... Americans going to Europe: Beware with getting a Vodafone simcard. Sorry to the Vodafone guys, but as for now, that's the status.
So to give closure to this issue (I always hate it when people fix their problem without telling the interwebs..)
IT WORKS!
After an initial terrible experience at the Vodafone counter, the headquarter tech guys have really been great to me. So it is indeed a Vodafone problem. American phones always give them a headache. They don't know what causes the problem exactly, but they do have a fix. It turns out that when logging on to the data network, American phones (AT&T iPhones, my T989 SGsII, and some other Android devices) sent some gibberish along that make the Vodafone server go cuckoo.
The solution was, miraculously, to sign me up (for free!) to the WiFi hotspot service that Vodafone provides, and then logging on to a different APN, being: office.vodafone.nl in my case.
Hope this helps anyone who's having similar issues.

ok the issue here is that some of the t989 are vodafone and some are USA network , now the other solution is that you flash with command prompt which there is a link to that tool im going to upload from the link i got it from . its also a clockrecoverymod , but this 1 asks you for deleting data user on the device and also resets the network includes USA/overseas though if your not customed roms
or any hacked roms , after flashing this device your basically removing any unwanted apps and cache that are hidden during network searching will be fixed bugs , put the simcard in slot but make sure that is a 3G/4G accounts, than its going to reboot the device automatically , it should be searching for service and also will be a circle with a slash on it where the service bar usually is , just wait about 1/2 hour to an hour maximum time let it do its thing , ok whats happening now to the phone is that is thinking with android network with usa and overseas market apps comparing both carriers network also gets the proper address for the custom rom or original kernel, froyo either 1 will get the correct network address and / VPN / and also will be adding both T-mobile/AT&T choose T-mobile dont go for AT&T cause it will research network configuration plus the phone its not unlocked for both its just a network passby to get correct WPN/VPN/clockworkrecoverymod .
Where is an fix?
