The whole series of pictures from this project are located here. I slapped together a great swiveling mount from an old Hero ProClip, a $5 case, and a standard iso pattern car bracket (can be used to hold anything with the standard pattern, generic).
I am including pictures of everything to help others rig a mount with spare parts if they don't have an old ProClip to steal from. Just like the ProClip this swivels to point left, right, up, down and can be spun 360 degrees.
Please excuse the filthy car, just got back from a road trip:

I used the stock Hero clip as a quick guide to drill 3 holes in my new Evo case.
I like the ProClip Mounts except for two things:
1) They are too expensive
2) They take too long to release new products
I got a great $5 case from handhelditems.com that grips the phone from the sides and bottom. This makes it a great candidate to become a car mount. I did have to drill three holes in this case to mount the bracket to it.
I had the luxury of cannibalizing the ball and screw mount from my Hero ProClip. I took pictures of these parts from a few angles to help others create their own from hardware store parts. If you need pictures of something let me know and I will get better lighting and a few good shots.
The only issue that I have left is that the two screws holding the bracket on cannot be countersunk flush because the case's plastic is too thin. I am going to dremel the heads of these screws nearly flat and then cover them with rubberized grip. Liquid rubberized grip can be bought at the hardware store and is used to treat handles of tools usually. This should make the screws and the case one piece.
The fit is very snug AND it is quick to pop the phone in and out of this holder right to left (volume keys first). Honestly I like this better than my official Hero ProClip setup because it is less bulky and easier to take the phone in and out of.

Very nice! I used an old ProClip mount as well for my EVO car mount. I had a ProClip mount for a Treo 700. All I did was use a heat gun to reform the ProClip to fit the EVO. Worked great and looks great. I did the same thing with an old Treo ProClip for my wife's Nexus 1.
hey OP, cool mod. Seems like you have to take the back cover out and slap on another back cover when you are not in the car?
Wonder if the proclip mount for Hero on that site would fit Evo.

I been thinking about getting this one.

Hi Richard,
Thank you for your interest in our ProClip Holders. At this time we do not have a Holder for the HTC EVO 4G. We do anticipate making one, however due to the large number of new products we are developing, we cannot give a specific date as to when this will be available. You will be notified by e-mail as soon as the Holder has been received at our warehouse and is ready for online ordering.
The HTC EVO does not fit in the holders for the HTC HD2. The width is the same but the HTC EVO is slightly thicker which doesn’t allow the device to slide in. Also the charging port and HDMI ports on the HTC EVO don’t line up with the HTC HD2 holders.

On my receipt it is described as HTC Evo 4G rubberized shield snap on hard case black.
It is the one that they carry in multiple colors. Get 30% off with the code 30htcoff

Mighty fine job.
Looks clean, professional and most of all... innovative!

This was the exact mod for the exact car I was looking for ...
I'm assuming that you're using the modifry dash bracket?

Ha! Yep that is the Modifry bracket. Works great!
I did screw a rubber stopper on the back of the bracket that rests on the dash. Makes it have absolutely no give when you push on it.
I was thinking of doing something like this too since proclip is indeed taking way too long to release a new vehicle mount. I'm using invisible shield atm which worked in proclip mounts (was a bit tight) on my TP1 and TP2. My question is, how snug is that case from handheld and would it possibly work with invisible shield installed you think?

It is tight, but the case is flexible and I think it would work fine with an invisible shield installed.

You could get one of these arkon holders and attach it to your bracket with the adapter that comes with it:
My friend said it fits his EVO perfectly without covering up the USB and HDMI ports on the bottom. The same company also sells brackets for different car makes:

Looks like an ebay case (item 130401168501) for $4 shipped from HKG.
I might try this out. Curious how much space there is between the back on the phone and the case. Did grinding down the screw heads sufficiently do the trick? Any chance some really low profile screw heads would work?
I have that same back cover case (and the Proclip too actually, but for my Jeep)... don't the screws you used to mount the case to the swiveling pivot scratch the ever living bejeesus out of the battery cover?!
EDIT: Just re-read and realized you already addressed my question.
Cool setup!

I use a car mount that I got from walmart years ago. Its one of those ones that clips to the vent.
I have the same case, but it is clear plastic and hard, not rubberized, so it actually provide some type of drop protection.
I added the disk to the back of the case, and it is great. Keeps the camera off the table when I set it down, and you don't notice the disk while its in your pocket.
That car mount is the nicest mount I have ever used. It is rock solid when installed. The disk will NOT firmly attach to the evo battery cover, the textured paint will cause it to fall off. The service from the guys that sell that case is absolutely top notch, I would buy again from them in a heartbeat.
Thanks for the idea. Ordered the exact samething, except I got the black case since that would match my car better. Same price too.

i just ordered two of them beause i have another weekend car. how is it on bumps? does it look as if its gonna fall off? im just worried about the phone falling off because i have stiff suspension on my other car.
is the clip on backplate sturdy enough?
thanks for posting the code though, thats awesome

I'm using scosche's mount for iphone 3gs(IPH3G). It is a bit tight for my evo, but I really like its flexible windshield mount, and this tightness makes the phone stay within the dock in any position.
fiy, I just got "Gizmo Dorks Rubberized Case Cover: $3.22", and it also fits with this mount.. (more tight than before though...)

I had the same issue. Super glue solved the problem. The adhesive they provide will not bond to anything (in my case, Seidio Innocase Active Limited Edition Black, the slightly ruberized exo-skeleton part). Works great now and I don't think its gonna fall off anytime soon.
I just bought one as well... this will be my first non proclip mount and I am happy about the discount - so much so that I bought 2 of them and a red case! Thanks for the tip! I will send pics when they arrive and I mount them - lets see if the summer heat melts them away!
installed last week
I didn't want to post a reply until I actually used it for a little while but now I can actually say... what a fantastic mount. I have it braced against my dash and installed the disc on the back of my active case. Unbelievable how unobtrusive thewhole set up is compared to a normal dock. Would recommend to anybody. FYI get a Bluetooth receiver. Unlimited data from Sprint means you can stream all day long
I was surprised to hear you had problems with the disk... did you swab the hell out of the case with the alcohol swab that came with, the case felt a little dusty so that is very important... I actually tried to get mine OFF and had a hell of a time and gave up. Another question, is the disk on the phone or the case I recommend?
Glad to hear its being enjoyed by some as much as I have enjoyed mine.

Well, to be totally honest the alcohol wipe I received was mostly dry when I openened it, and I figured the case was new so I didn't bother wiping it, although I used what little alcohol that was on it to wipe down my dash before applying the dash mount. However, I have noticed after all this that case does have a dusty feel out of the box, so maybe that was it.
It also seems the disk-in-the-mount is a tight fit... once it falls off of my case, I almost need a pair of pliers to rotate the disk and pull it out.
I'll try superglue and see if that helps.

when someone actually gets one of these home charger/dock combo's and confirms they fit and work, could you please post here, with the link to the one you bought?
so many of these things are junk, and dont fit the phone, that I am afraid to try another one that doesnt work, after getting burned already
thanks
I actually bought a zuuma z4 and took it for a spin this morning. Wow that thing is solid! It stayed put even after a 120 degree turn at 20 mph!
It has an adjustable cradle with soft padding that holds my evo in place and gives it some protection.
I really only have 2 problems with it. It took me a while to figure out how to mount it properly as it comes with no proper instructions. Second, its byoc (bring your own charger).
Great for $30!!!

if it does, just get the ebay one and drill a nice hole on the holder
They sale a generic universal (rebranded) one at Wal-Mart that clamps on to the phone with thick foam padding. It's pretty stable and clips securely into the vents (or screws in / etc). It's like $9.99. Best of all, you don't have to remove your protective case to use it, since it adjusts with a button.
Food for thought.

If Car Mount is specifically made for EVO, why in the description does it say "Suction cup with lock clip to ensure your iphone 4 remains in place"
Same crap Products with different labeling
I just got my ebay order. This is the second item l got from the same seller. Unfortunately, the dock was shipped with no protective packaging, and part of the suction cup was broken. I'm hoping to get a replacement. There is a hole in the holder for the camera. Looks like the box was opened by customs, or was shipped broken because the broken piece was missing upon receipt. The holder is tight-fitting, and has 4 locking slots similar to my magellan dock. Build quality is ok for 6 bucks, but I doubt one would be able too fit an evo with a case in the holder. I have a zaggskin on mine. I previously purchased the battery charger and 2 batteries from this vendor.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
I received the car dock today and it works pretty well. There is a cutout for the camera, has to holders on the bottom (or side if you leave in portrait) and a flexible clip on the top. Has the universal 4 peg holder and the large middle so if you don't like their holder or need one with a longer neck you can get one. I have not tried it in the car as of this writing, only in the house to try out the fit. It is perfect without a case - with my "Barely There" case it fits, but no quite right. I will post pictures very soon so all can see what I mean.
Easy enough...
Don't bother with this one. The fit on the car dock is tight...too tight. Left small, very tough to see, scratches. You may not notice, but I did and I am not happy with this one.
Not worth the few bucks it cost.
DealExtreme just got it in for a little cheaper. They are good with refunding your money too when it comes to problems.
http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.40745
Does anyone know if the dealextreme or ebay car holder will work if you have an extended battery with a larger back panel?? I ordered the extended 3000 mah battery off eBay.
Also, I just wanted to point out that the eBay car dock and the deal extreme one are definitely different.
I got the car dock and I really like it. It's a snug fit but the Evo pops in and out easily enough (I did not get any scratches on it). The Evo is held very securely and does not vibrate while the car is moving. There is maximum up/down and left/right adjustment and when the best postion is found you lock it in with two big hand screws. Overall I'm very satisfied.

Sorry for lack of updates guys. I got my tracking info early last week for UPS and from the updates, I should've had the mount since the 16th!
As of now, there have been no new updates on where the package is. Really annoying. I hope I get the package today so I can test out and report back here. If not, I'll have to chase UPS down to see what's up.
Sorry for the delay.
My Kensington mount arrived yesterday.
In short, the EVO w/ Otterbox Commuter does fit onto the mount. Though I have to say (similar to the Seido case), given the Commuter adds a little bit of thickness and because the hard case is a little slick, the EVO may fall out easily (either landscape or portrait).
I snapped it on and gave it a little shake and it holds fairly well, but that doesn't mean going over large bumps or potholes will necessarily hold it in place.
I haven't been able to test it in vehicle yet as the vents in my car don't accommodate the vent mount and stupid California outlaws windshield mount. I will attempt to use Windshield regardless and will report my experience.
I will also post pictures (hopefully this weekend) so you guys can see what I'm referring to. All in all, perhaps with a little modification like adding thin layer of rubber onto the grips may work even better.
Brian
Awesome yeah... You're not gonna get pulled over a windshield mount, as long as you don't have it in a spot which makes it difficult to see in front of you.
Please post pics ASAP. I need to get this rockin by the 29th as I'm going on a road trip
Yeah I figure the likelihood isn't too high to get pulled over as much as me not having a front plate. =)
I'll try to shoot for earlier than the weekend to get pics on here.
Yeah hurry up homes
Seems everyone is waiting on Brian75 to post pics, but thought I would post pics of my EVO in my Commuter case, mounted in the Arkon universal windshield mount in my car. You'll notice the silicon tab covering the charging and HDMI ports on the bottom fit perfectly between the feet of the universal mount.
Just offering an alternative to the Kensington mount, and much more secure. No chance the EVO is coming out of the mount unless I want it to.
Decide for yourself how ugly it is. I have no issues with it. Sorry for the poor quality pictures. It was too sunny yesterday.
I think it's great, but it's a pain in the ass to keep putting your phone in and zipped it tight...
Does it also rotate ... for like map view?
Yes it rotates to landscape - sorry I didn't take any pictures in that orientation. The universal cradle is mounted to the arm with a ball joint that has adjustable tension and will swivel 360 degrees. It also tilts up and down enough to be able to have the EVO pointed at you for a straight-on viewing angle.
To be honest, I leave it in the orientation shown 99% of the time.

I respectfully disagree. I put my EVO in and take it out with one hand without issue. Have you used this mount for any length of time to generate this opinion?
(Disclaimer: I am in no way affiliated with the mfr of this mount... I simply like it)

Does anyone know if the below car mount fits a Samsung note encased in a TPU or nilkin/rock hard case?
I did a measurement of my note in its protective case and found the width is about 85-86mm...so it might be a tight fit, given the maximum width of the arm is 85mm.
Anyone who has bought this mount and has a TPU / Rock / Nilkin case can share his experience would be helpful. Thanks.

I have the car mount (its FANTASTIC BTW). the fit is very tight and I do not think you can leave any case on the device. Aside from a snug fit, you need to snap the power clip in, and it only fits if the device is already snuggly fitted into the mount.

That's the same one I and mkoger have, it is a very good fit for the stock cover but not anything else
I have that one too. Its OK.. You can see my comments on it here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1386908
As I mentioned, I have this case: http://www.amazon.com/elago-Slim-Ca...d=1324256424&sr=1-3-catcorr&tag=5336653508-20 (elago G4 Slim Fit Case for Galaxy Note -Soft Feeling Black)
And I can snap it into the dock fine. A little snug, but not bad. Recommend using both hands to remove.

Please give us a small review when you get chance.
I am interested in this mount but there appears to be a lot of unsatisfied user who have problems with it sticking to the dash or the phone sticking to the mount.
I picked up an ILuv car mount at the weekend and it's working great, no wobbles and holds the Note in the flipcase too.

Ok, I got to test this out today.
Firstly, the unit itself is very nice and compact, it does not take up much space at all.
It sticks to the dash extremely well, not only does the bottom part use suction but it is also very sticky. I tried with a fair bit of force to pull it off and it wasn't moving once stuck to the dash.
My Note is in a Nillkin case so is slightly heavier then standard but I placed it on the two little grooves that stick out, and then firmly pushed it back so it stuck in place. I then drove to work (and later back home). The ride is quite bumpy in parts and I deliberately drove quite aggressively in an attempt to make the Note fall out but it didn't budge. I can see the 'stickiness' being lost over time but apparently cleaning it with a wet cloth fixes that so only time will tell I suppose.
So far I am pleased with it.
Cheers for the update.
I've just ordered one from mobilefun.de as they have them at 11,99 yoyos.
Any of you coming from the Streak who purchased the SlipGrip commuter car mount will be interested in knowing the Note will fit into it with a slim case (I'm using the BoxWave).
I mentioned this in an earlier post.

I just ordered the same holder. What do you mean by "permanent mount arm?" Can you post a couple of photos?

I assume you dont mount your phone in winter
I want something that will hold it in landscape in the centre dash.
So that's basically the middle of the car (centre) and the highest tip (of dboard) but not on the glass. That way viewing is much much better and the holder doesn't leave a circle smudge.
Here's my car:
http://gi179.photobucket.com/groups/w292/HZ85Z050N0/Picture027Small2.jpg
(i want it above the warning lamp button where the multifunction display resides)
Btw, in my city if they see the circle smudge or the holder, they break into your car and look for the gps, which costs me a window to repair and any stolen goods.
This is a review of iOttie Easy One Touch car mount holder for Note 2: http://www.iottie.com/Product/ProductDetail.aspx?ProductID=1008&ProductType=321
When a company puts "easy one touch" in their product description, you know they mean business I went through a number of different car mounts in the last few months and this is the first one which allows a very easy one hand operation. I don't look for fancy car mounts with power cradles or already attached cables limiting my setup. I need flexibility of universal grip mount where I can manage where and how I attach my micro-usb power cable without a need of taking a case off my phone to fit into the holder. There is a few other car mounts available in this category, but what I found is that nobody delivered it to perfection like iOttie car mount.
Starting with suction pad, you get a very strong gel base adhesive material and the pad itself made out of thick and durable silicone. The suction cup is actually labeled as "super suction cup", and trust me - it will stick to anything like a cement glue. But at the same time, with some force it will be easy to remove, doesn't leave any residue, and after rinsing under the water it's like brand new. There were no issues sticking to a textured dashboard in my car. As a matter of fact, this is the only mount I was able to stick to a vertical textured area above glove box door in my car - totally insane!!! And just to prove that it can stick to any surface and be removed without damaging it, I also used it at home in a kitchen mounted to the top and upside down, as well as vertically mounted to my painted wall and the door. In every case it stuck dead on, and after removing (did require some force) it came off clean without leaving any residue or damaging the surface. Something to think about if you are planning to use it in the house as well. Arm connecting the mounting base to the actual holder has multiple adjustment knobs for different angles and full 360 degree rotation. All the knobs are easily accessible and very comfortable to adjust with fingers and doesn't require any additional tools. My only comment is that I wish it would have a universal ball joint connection as an option to be compatible with other mounts, although I'm not sure if its even necessary considering how capable this mount already is.
Now to the holder itself. It's as simple as it can get, yet brilliantly executed to work with one hand. You just push on two side bars to open both extendable arms which pops up a trigger button in the middle, and place your phone inside which pushes on the trigger button to securely lock the arms. That's all! Both arms and a trigger button have soft lining, no worries about scratching your phone or the case. And also you have an adjustable extension shelf for an additional support to find a better position for your phone placement relative to holder where side arms doesn't interfere with power/volume buttons. Everything is made out of durable plastic material. Also, I have to mention that both the packaging box and iOttie website have a very detailed installation/operation instructions.
This mount does exactly what it says - it's easy and it's one touch. Also it's a bargain for under $20 on Amazon, where it's actually #1 selling car mount.
Here are the pictures taken both at home and in the car. I still get a kick out of the one mounted vertically above my glove compartment

I enjoy the iOttie as well for my car dock needs. The only knock on it, and it's more for selected people, you can only use it with the OEM/slim battery and a slim case, such as yours or TPU case. It's not Defender friendly.
The only dock I think may compete with it is the Clingo you see on TV. But that dock may not work well with cases that are silicon based such as TPUs. But the Clingo Neklit works pretty well with my Cruzerlite TPU case.
does it come with any audio/power cableing, or is it just a mount?
thanks!
I can attest to the strength of the suction cup. It's the most insane one I've ever seen. Even when you don't pull down the locking tab, the suction cup holds so securely I had to literally peel it off the glass on the windshield. I've mounted it on the dash as well and if I pulled hard enough I think I would've cracked the dashboard.
The mount is great and there is only one thing I don't like about it, the locking screw for the actual phone clamp part is very sensitive. If you do not tighten it enough, it will slip and the phone will turn, but if you tighten it only a tad more, it won't move at all for adjustments. There is little margin for flexibility in the mount tightening.
Other than that it's great for the Note2.

Just a mount, I pictured whatever is included in the box. These are typically universal mounts, leaving flexibility to connect whatever else you want afterwards.

I don't recall any cables being included. Really 2.0A car charges are cheap, and you got a USB cable with the phone or you can pick one up one the cheap as well. The charger is open enough that you can use pretty much what you like to attach USB or 3.5mm wise.
Just ordered this as well. I liked the fact that suction can stick virtually anywhere. I'm tired of just putting my phone in my cup holder, even though I don't use my navigation too much I think I might now lol.

Do you know of a good car mount that will work with the Otterbox Defender case?

It comes with one! Well, after a little modification....
Anyone out there who's had this for more than a few weeks care to comment on durability? I'm seeing some reviews on Amazon saying that the joints get weak very quickly and start to sag; any truth to that?
I've been using this mount for a couple months and it is excellent. The suction cup is the strongest I've ever seen.

Ok I had this ordered back in Jan. But after I got back from CES show in Vegas. I got my hands on the mount I posted above!!:thumbup:
But I will say I did try it b4 it got returned to Amazon 1 week. #1 strong suction hand down! #2 Will stick anywhere, because the back is made of the same material as the lil sticky pads we use to, use on the dash! #3 Went from one case too another, it stopped working as it was. Because the new case was a lil thicker! So it kept popping out, cuz of the small handles on the sides! :banghead:
# durability is so so. It'll hold up for sometime for you?? Pending on use!

Yes it it strong but, but when it wares out after moving it so much it'll just b like a regular suction. They say rinse it off, but I've had that type of material b4! Fyi
Side note: please PLEASE, keep in mind if you leave it on your dash it WILL leave a permanent circle if used for a long extended period. The week I had it on the dash the circle is still there!!!:banghead::banghead: I'll post a pic 2morw!

I've had mine since December. I haven't noticed it sagging any more or worse than the other car docks. All of mine eventually loose grip in the ball joint. So, from the get go, I have it where the phone sits on the dash.
I haven't noticed the ring, but mine has been on the dash for months. I use it almost everyday.
There are many car mounts I have used, compared vent mount, dashboard mount and windshield mount, I prefer dashboard mount. The 360 degree design adjust my phone or other device until can clearly fit the screen, aLLreLi car mount is I'm using now. It's useful and flexible.
