Im in Washington D.C.
Rom - Supersonic_1.32.651.6_rooted(stock rooted rom)
Radio - 1.39.00.05.31
Root - Full root with nand unlock (Toast method)
I dont know but Ive had smart phones with sprint since they first had 3g and i was always getting atleast just under a mb down and a few hundred up....
As of yesterday im getting like .3mb down and literally 9kb up....this is after running both extreme labs and speedtest.nets apps from the market.
I have full root(both steps from toast). Ive flashed a few rooms(BB, fresh, etc) but now i am back to the stock rom with root(Supersonic_1.32.651.6_rooted) and i am still getting the same speeds.
PRL updates have been done. I even did a full data restore(##3282#->data*->data restore). Nothing is working
Im pulling the battery for a while to see if that helps.
I was in DC today same phone info as you but with Fresh v.2 Rom
Was getting 2.7 - 4.6Mbps down 1Mbps up
In STL my 4G is around 1.1mb dnld and 3G is around .5mb dnld. Both pretty terrible.
I'm in Kansas City and had been averaging 4mb download and 1mb upload. This was up until 4 days ago and no I'm lucky to hit 1mb download. No clue what is causing it. I've tried everything I can think of.
I'm getting a friends stock Evo to test later this evening.
Im in detroit running
radio - 1.39.00.05.31
Rom - Fresh
Fully rooted (toast method)
Used Speedtest.net app from the market place
1st try
Download .43 mbps
upload .47 mbps
2nd try
download .68mbps
upload .58mbps
Im sick looking at this...
I haven't got passed the 5.08Mbps but I come close often. I am Starbucks at 3.5Mbps with Wifi Tethering
*update*
Used sprint chat first....the god damn guy JACOB A told me that there was an outage in my area
Called tech support and she ran me through all of the remove battery, data restore, prl update crap again. Nothing worked. she said there were NO outtages in my area.
Then she told me that there is no standard speed on 3g. Ive had 3g since they first got it and always got around 800-900 down and 300-500 up(HTC Diamond, 3 BBs, and the moment). now im getting 200 down and 100 up using speedtest.net app, extremelabs test, AND sprint.com/speedtest(didnt know that existed till today).
She pretty much told me i was screwed.

Yes, I'm in the Providence area and I updated the night Goonzy put his thread out. His method involved a master reset but this thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=753233) does it without the reset.
I did a Nandroid backup, used ROM Manager to flash an Amon RA recovery (I usually use ClockworkMod), then I flashed the stock rooted rom (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=743352), and then I used Goonzy's method. It took me 5 tries, but it finally worked. Then I restored my Nandroid backup and had my apps & data back with the 1.40 PRI.
Other ROMs should work as long as they support the ## data codes. I've been running CM6 which doesn't, so I had to flash to something else to start the process.
Hope this helps.
I've been trying in downtown Providence near the place mall, so far no luck. I get the 4g signal, but I can't get evo to jump to 1.4.
tied all stock roms - odexed or deodexed or even full stock unrooted (with s-off). no luck. Wiped the **** out of davlik and cache. do ##768# every time.
Which tower did you hit ? what area ?
I'm in johnston. There is 4g in providence? Sorry about getting off topic.
Yes, there is 4g in providence and I could get 1-2 4g bars in Warwick near the airport.

Do you know of any coverage map of 4g in this area?
I spoke to Sprint, there is no official 4g coverage until the end of the year.
I tried both ##786# and ##3282# methods almost a 100 times without success around Boston. I have given up now. Let me know if anyone has had success in MA.
Lost 4G after Radio upgrade
I live in Johnston and after reading this thread I switched from CM6 to Fresh to see if I could find some 4g. As soon as I got Fresh on my phone I was picking up a poor-fair 4G signal from my home. I should have left it at that but Fresh says you need to upgrade the radios that he has posted so I flashed both of those and now I haven't seen a 4G signal since. am spending the morning trying to upgrade mt PRI using the non-factory reset method, Ill let you know how I make out. I was wondering what people in the Rhode island area that are finding 4g are using for a ROM/Radio version. Thank you.
well I got to 1.40 with the ##786# method in Johnston(just outside of providence). Also did a full wipe and it took a few times. 4g says connecting but never does, just goes back to scanning. I'll try connecting at home when I get out of work.
whooohooooo.... I did it in 2 tries on 495 south near cape code.
I think it's all about the location.
Is any one 3G messing up? For the past 3 weeks now my data speeds has been so slow. When ever I try to watch a video it sometimes work for 2 secs or just say "sorry, cannot play video". I called sprint and they gave me the run around. I'm using Fresh 3.2.0.0. stock kernel.
Any suggestions?
Not sure when using other kernels, but the phone never says when it is on a 1x signal. It always says either 3G or 4G. Due to this, you may experience slow "3G" speed which any other phone would show as 1x

I am also on Fresh, it has been extremely slow. Sometimes I will get 27kbs down and 296kbs up, way slower than anything including dialup. I still haven't found anything to increase my speed. I am now on Fresh EVO ROM 3.5.0.1 and I'm rooted with Unrevoked Forever, I've been wanting to go back to stock because this is really frustrating. There is a area around my town that has 4G and my phone wouldn't connect my friend also has a EVO with the same rom and his would. at the time I was rooted with Unrevoked 3 but he told me to re root my phone with Unrevoked Forever and turn s-off. So I did and now I can't get into recovery It just goes to the white screen that says "HTC EVO 4G". Still not sure if I can connect to 4G. I've heard you can go back to stock by using HTC sync and getting the RUU but everything I find doesn't show much and people's comments say it doesn't work. So if you or anyone else knows anything please help. Thanks.
I'm not sure if the speeds really even have to do with anything but Sprint themselves.
On an old ****ty Samsung Moment my download speeds are 200-400 kb/s
On an Evo my download speeds are 100-200.
Both are too ****ty to be worth using.

Well I called Sprint and they didn't help for anything. Not sure how it happened to my phone but when I first got it and for a few months of having it I was downloading at 1.5 mbps down and about 900 kbs up on average. My uncle did a speed test on his Samsung Vibrant (Galaxy S) on t-mobile his 3g was 2.1 mbs up and 1.1 mbs down. That only makes me hate my phone even more.
Root your phone. Download msl reader app. ##data# in dialer on a sense rom. Click edit. Enter msl code. Hit menu and restore. Chose to restart phone when the pop up comes up. Worked for me. Used to get around 130 kbs down. Now I get around 800-1100 down in my room.

OR install ADFREE from the market. That seems to fix alot of peoples problems with data speeds.
Have you seen this:

Hey guys I have had my Evo for awhile now and Sprints network has great coverage BUT the 3g seems abysmally slow. For instance, I can rarely stream videos without it buffering - youtube videos on regular quality mind you. If I stand still in a place with good signal I will be fine but if I'm moving etc it is slow. I get around 100KB/s during daytime where I live and 130KB/s night time which is great but luckily I also get full signal where I am. On the go, it sucks.
Are there any ways to increase 3g speeds or is it purely network related?
Welcome to sprints idea of 3g
God's honst truth man... if thats all you get... thats all you are going to get because sprints 3g network is the worst i have ever seen. Bar none. Even little us cellular has better coverage and twice the data speeds as sprint does here in iowa.
There is no possible way for the phine or any hack to it to speed up sprints crap network.
My advise to you is to cqll sprint and plead your case, that you paid for 3g and are getting 1x rtt speeds 24/7 and politely demand a credit to your account like i do every month.
And then call back about 5 minutes later and ask to speak to the retention center because you want to cancel your service because you arpe not getting service you are paying for.
Then tell the retention persion you were thinking of getting the Airave but cant afford it and see if they will give it to you free on the basis of poor service and they typically will.
I did, and got one for when i am at work and the boss wont let me use it because it uses works internet for voice and data.

Figures... Should have went with ATT or Verizon.
I know in the old days of 3g internet hacks Sanyo phones had a data cap screen that was accessible via ##040793##. From there you could change the data rate, 144K/230K. Not sure if we have the same here but phone codes may be a place to start.
Mmmmhmmm. Just be glad you don't have the epic and are capped at 150kbps up.
I think sprint has finally gotten 2 good phones and 4g, so now they think they're the top dog and can do whatever they damn well please...it's like a cycle with them. Bad service>>>loose all of their customers>>>cheap, semi-good service>>>get customers back>>>become assholes again>>>loose their customers...

Well Verizon has amazing android phones for one. There is a data cap for ATT which is true but no cap for Verizon. You know now that I think about it I might do the force roam hack on my Evo and see if if I get better 3g speeds.
I have no idea what any if you are talking about, I get better 3g speeds on Sprint then I ever did with any other carrier I've had.

I wish I could get speeds that fast consistently. Actually what you are getting is right about on par for 3g. That's prob the avg speed one would expect to get. There are higher areas and lower areas depending on a lot of things. A 100KB connection is nothing to complain about. I've personally never had a connection over 150 KB.
Sent from your mom's phone.
Not sure if its sprint or my phone but I can't break 40kbs down on anything and 3g cuts out all the time. Crappy....
The first thing I would do to verify your 3g speeds is to unroot your phone, and make sure you are running the latest .93 hboot release and sprint ota release. If your phone is already in this state (un rooted and latest hboot) then ignore me.
You should also look into unrevoked forever if you haven't already...it runs off the current hboot, and I've noticed that something about that hboot does help 3g speeds on some rooted phones if you go that route.
I've done a ton of research and practical testing on this subject and I can say without a doubt that the evo's current rooting methods DO have a negative impact on some 3g phones in some areas. And I'm not talking about 100 or 200 kbps here or there. In the same house, same phone, 1 rooted and 1 not. That was the ONLY difference. The rooted phone got 7 kbps. The stock got 1800kbps. I swapped phone setups so that the rooted one was now unrooted and vice versa. That time the rooted one got 47kbps and unrooted was 1681 kbps...in other words the problem followed the rooting process, and not the phone. I've done dozens of tests like this and others in various areas within the surrounding wilmington delaware area.
I have access to 3 rooted evos, 1 evo that is always stock, as well as a samsung moment. The 4 evos are all rev 3 nova. I also did similar tests on the hero with the same sorts of results. Feel free to pm me or post here with any questions.
EDIT: the kbps numbers I listed were for download speeds. Upload speeds on both rooted and unrooted, regardless of build or boot version, were consistent at around 600 -700 kbps during almost all of my testing.
EDIT2: I forgot to say - this problem also happened to me when I changed recoveries from clockwork to AmonRA. So it's not JUST the rooting process that can cause this, but several low-level engineering commands, such as flashing a kernel, upgrading a ROM, etc.
Tiepoz baught two yoo bi swype"3
That's pretty crappy, I get full 3g pretty much everywhere around St. Louis until I get out to the country. And pretty good 4g around town. My 3g is about 1.5mb down. 4g is 5 to 7mb down.
Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk
Flash the PRL to connect to Verizon's towers. I get 1.2 mb/s even see 2mb/s occasionally. Of course ping times are raised.
It's pretty hit or miss here, one day I will get 50-150k down and the next it will be +1meg. Next time it get drops below 500 you can bet I will be talking to somebody about it though, their advertised 3G speed is 600kb - 1.5mb.
100kb is ridiculous
I get anywhere between 500-1mb down 100-200kb up. My 4G easily does between 2-6mb down and 1mb up. People just love to complain. You didn't realize this within your 30 day trial? If so, why didn't you switch carriers?
What should the prl be right now ? And how are you guys testing the speeds? Nvr done it

You live in an area with poor coverage or your phone has a faulty radio.
I get good signal and up/Downs on 3g. If I nandriod away from cm6, I can get 6-7mb down and 1mb up with 4g in San leandro CA.

Speedtest... its in the market.

I think it is my radio. I was getting fine speeds up until 3 days ago when I noticed severe loading lag in my tethered apps. I get decent pings ~ 200-300ms which is not too out of the ordinary. I did a speed test other day and it was 50KB/s down and 70KB/s up. I figured it was just a faulty day but it has gone on far too long now. This is with 5/5 bars too... Just gotta wait for my new Evo to come in. Seems like every hardware ****up is happening at once.
Hello, I have noticed that ever since I have gotten my EVO that the 3G speeds are insanely slow. I've ran speedtests all over the Los Angeles area and they average download speed never exceeds 1 Mbps. Anyways, I have been without proper internet since I have moved, so I have been USB tethering to my PC. This has compelled me to look into the slow 3G matter more. I ran a speedtest from my PC browser and noticed that the central server(gold star) it recommends is in KS and im in CA. This is suggesting that the best speedtest is in KS, meaning that I am probably getting 3G connection out of state
Is this even possible? And how can I adjust my 3G connection?
Well there are never radios which could potentially help, but a lot of that data speed just varies.

Thanks for the suggestiom, i've already updated the PRI, WiMax and Radio to the latest(I never read about NV or HBoot updares, so i'll stay away from those for the time being). I just updated to the deodexed version of the latest rooted HTC sense 3.70 update. Results have been constant from stock up until this point though.
Yea my 3g at times are like but I notice it when I flash different radios & prl from new to old they say u should always stay updated but notice the best results when I use the old radio n old prl but now I use the old radio and the new prl 1.90 get results n u should playing with the home agents

I would have agree with the OP. I live in the Atlanta GA area and typically where I would I get 5+ bars of signal, but I get speeds averaging .600 mbps, its ridiculous. With my old Hero I would always get +1.5 mbps in the same area. Now there have been times where I would get 1.5 to 2.1 mbps on my Evo on 3G... but a lot of the times it would only last for a day or 2. Then I come back to work the next morning and these speeds are back to being craptastic even while still displaying 5+ bars.
At home its always been worse. But I would still be able to run Pandora and run a 4 minute or less youtube video on regular quality without too much stutter. Now I wouldn't dare use data like that on my Evo w/o flipping on WiFi now though. Its pretty ridiculous at this point...
Hi guys,
Sorry to be turning to the forums, but I have no where else to turn. I was hoping I could find a solution here from someone (or a group) of you guys that might be having the same problem. I live and work in lower manhattan, and I have the Sprint Epic 4G touch. I upgraded to ICS manually the day the update came out and people gave directions on how to manually update. Ever since I've upgraded, I've had SUPER slow speeds with 4G. 3G works fine, but for some reason, I cannot get download speeds on my E4GT to get above 43 kbps on the speedtest.net app.
And it's not just there, on anything that requires an internet connection, it does NOT get above 43kbps. Typically it's 2-7 kbps. I mean this is abysmal. When I use 3G it's usually pretty decent (expected 3G speeds). I've gone to the sprint store and the techs there keep telling me that they haven't heard anything in regards to this. And when I try to prove it to them, it always shows regular 4G speeds of about 4-8Mbps. But I mean it's obviously going to be fast, I mean they have a tower right there in the store or above it.
Whenever I'm near a Sprint tower, the speeds are fine. But if I'm 2-3 blocks away, speeds go down to 2-7kbps. It's so frustrating.
I've done a PRL update, Profile Update. Samsung software update, and update firmware in the System Updates section in system settings. I've been updating all these settings countless times over the past month, and I'm still getting the same speeds on 4G.
It's so bad, I'm seriously thinking of reverting back to Gingerbread (EL29) just in the hopes that it fixes the problem. I initially had problems with the ICS update (overheating, batter running out in 2-3 hours, apps crashing, things just all messed up), so what I did then was a factory reset from the System Settings section and it fixed 'some' of the problems. Battery life is still awful, but its at least fixed other issues. But the 4G part is still horrible! It's been that way since I upgraded to ICS manually.
I searched the forum and haven't really seen people reporting the same thing. It's sporadic, but I was hoping maybe someone on here would have a solution or an idea of what might be causing the problem.
In case you need to know, I'm currently on
Model Number: SPH-D710
Android Version: 4.0.4 (Stock ICS update OTA except manually updated)
Baseband version: S: D710.10 S.FF18
Kernel version: [email protected] #3
Build number: IMM761I.FF18
Hardware version: D710.10
If anyone out there has a solution, please let me know. Or any advice. I appreciate anything you guys can offer. Please let me know. If you need to know anything else, please let me know... I'll write back quickly. If anyone else is having any of these problems, please let me know too. It would be nice to know that I'm not the only one having these problems.
Thank you so much everyone. Hope your having a great day.

It's possible that your phone doesn't play nice with FF18 modem. Every phone reacts different to different modems, so its possible that EL29 was just the modem for your particular phone. From what I gather you aren't rooted, this however, would be your only way to install a custom modem of your choice.
I have the same issue revert back to gingerbread if you want data speeds back. Ive sone evrything in the book to try to fix this and nothing worked.

No need to be rooted to flash a modem with odin, PM me if you need some info.
You can try flashing different modem versions and find out which one work the best for you
You need to try a new modem. On FC24, I have gotten 12+mbps on 4g at work. I used EL29 for a few days and I couldn't get past 2 mbps in the same spot.

Im also in NY and yesterday i tried a few different modems as well as Calk's ICS and Blue Kuban and i was only getting about 1 kbps down. No matter what modem i tried. I went back to Calk GB 3.0 on FG31 and that gave me the best 4g. Im also a manager at RadioShack and i've notice that the 3g on GS3 is alot slower than the 3g on my e4gt...so maybe it does have something to do with ICS.

I also work downtown but I am close to the Seaport. I have always had spotty and inconsistent 4G in my office but when I go outside it gets very good. I am running the latest FG20 Boost modem and it was working well (even in my office) up until there was a bad storm a few weeks ago, I think a 4G tower was affected. That day both my 3G and 4G service went down at my desk, 3G came back a little later but 4G has never been the same.
Trying some speed tests at my desk now on 4G and I am only getting up to 1111kbps but it is more around 600. 3G speeds are bad today as well, I usually get between 200 to 300 and only getting like 50 today.
Update: Just updated to the FG31 modem and my 4G speeds are still the same but my 3G speeds got better while sitting at my desk today. There has to be a 4G tower problem around the downtown NYC area because I never had speeds this slow before.
