Ending call with power button? - Desire General

When I swapped from the iPhone to android, I really missed the button on the top of the phone to end calls. It was very convenient, I think.
I was therefore delighted to see that the desire had a button on top that I upgraded from my hero immediately (amongst other reasons of course!)
Problem is, when you press it while in a call, it just turns the screen off. Does anyone know if someone has developed a hack to end the call with the power button?

Download and flash the Defrost 0.9 ROM from richardtrip. In Accesibility in settings, you can then enable the end the call from power button

While froyo is cool, I'd prefer to do this in my current sense Rom.

Strange that it doesn't work when in-call. I know it (the power button) disconnects/hangs-up a call whilst ringing, because I often accidentally press it whilst pulling it out of my belt case and it hangs-up the incoming call. Grrrrrr

press side volume button will silence the ring?

Just now I received one incoming call,i pressed side volume button, the phone was silenced, I tried again,no matter up volume button or down button, the ring will be silenced.
Is this the normal feature of HTC Touch Pro2? or is the bug of the rom I am using? or there is any setting that can change this behavior?
pls kindly test with your phone, help me with this issue.

I don't think it's a bug, and it's a feature of the tp2. I've used that feature all the time, and it works the same in all the roms I've tried. If you don't want the ring silenced, don't press the side volume button....though I have hit it by mistake when pulling my phone out from time to time....but by this time, you already know you have a call, so no big deal.

thanks for reply,I am relieved.
Aye. normal feature. Its even part of the stock rom. Its easier if you want to silence your phone rather than trying to fumble around on the touch screen if you need to silence it quickly.

Got a new thinking when came back to look at this post, this HTC phone....press volume key to mute incoming call (ringer) is good feature for people, but maybe some people dont like it,they want the phone to ring for a while and let people around him know that he got a good ringtone or he got busy. if the ring stops by accidentally pressing the volume key,he will be pissed off.
Joke is joke, but will be nice if there is option to disable this press-volume-key-to-mute-incoming-call thing.

Swap Power and End buttons

On the latest CAB I downloaded the End button locks the screen and the power button minimizes all the programs. Is there any way to make the Power button lock the screen and the end button minimize all the programs, like it is in Win Mo? I got a T mobile TP2
The problem is that you would end calls with the lock button as well.
I see. There isn't some way they could code around this? That's weird that it's like that.
This note is from the WIKI.
Note: It's until now impossible to split 'End Call' and 'Power' function in the code, so this last function can't be linked to Power button without it being 'End Call' too. Thus for the ease of ending a call, this function is placed on the normal EndCall-button and Power button is 'Home'.
honestly I would find it easier to end calls with the power button anyway. So this seems like a perfectly good compromise to me.
I agree. I'd rather have the power button turn the backlight off than the end button. That's the most important. They should make an option or something where people can choose their preference.
i was coming to look for this. i dont mind having to end calls with the power button right now. ill be using standby and home more so id rather those be more natural.

WHAAA???
You guys like ending a phone call using the power button??? Since when has that EVER been natural? (Other than on an Android device, where the power and the end call are the same button...) Ive had 5-6 HTC devices, don't think I ever recall thinking, "we should be using the power button to end a call.". On some HTC devices the power button isn't even very easy to access. Changing end call to the power button would be a disaster.
LOL

for you. obviously we want it though. i would like the end call button to be on the end call button but i want sleep on the top and home key down below more.
having it end call when youre on a call and a home key button the rest of the time would be more ideal. i kinda wish this was the hd2 because the buttons on that would be make sense in android.

Can't stop the revolution!
Back in WinMo whenever I end a call I hit the big red button on the screen, then hit the power button to put it to sleep so I can put it in my pocket. Needless to say, being able to just double-tap the power button to accomplish the same thing would be great. The front buttons on the TP2 are so dainty it's annoying to press them honestly.
It's such a trivial thing, but I guess everyone's got their own reasons for wanting it. It would be nice to know how to swap the button assignments for myself even if it's not baked into the Rhodium builds directly.
I hit the 'power button' to turn off the screen more often than I hit the end button to 'end calls'. I rarely call. I'm a texter. Power button doing what it should > end button doing what it should.

thats my thoughts exactly. i think even people who make calls turn the phone on and off using the power button more than the end key. i understand how one would like it the way it is, which is why a solution to change it for us would be nice.
I agree

I agree with you, whenever I try to press the EndCall button, I always fear of dropping the phone from my hand, Or if you hold the phone in your palm; you have twist your thumb all the way down, seems awkward.
I have a question ... wouldn't it be possible to reassign certain actions and not the default button functions to the hardware keys ?
On windows mobile, this seems to be possible with the rhodium keyboard controller ... it uses a modified driver to achieve that iirc ...
If someone could do that for android, we could assign "turn display off" to the power button, "home + end call" to the end key and so on ... or am I wrong ?
Sorry to double post/bump my question ...
But wouldn't it really be possible to just create a driver that is able to assign certain actions to the buttons instead of static button actions?
Or is this impossible under Android?
I would like to know about this me too...
i use the on screen button to end my calls and using the end key to turn backlight off its unnatural for me...
also it will be cool to have the screens template on end key button...
I actually agree with the idea of the power button ending a call - I hold my phone with my index finger on the top ( a habit I developed after having someone yank a phone away from me), so the power button would be very natural for hanging up as I remove the phone from my ear.
An option, or even info on the files to edit, would be awesome. Could it be as simple as a simple .conf file in the filesystem?

um... it has been (semi) standard on 'dumb phones' for years that the end call button is also the power button.
that being said, i think the best idea is to have some kind of option so people can choose what they prefer. i think you can get used to either way, but it can be really frustrating if you go back and forth between winmo and android to have them be different.

Yes, on "dumb" phones, and android handsets the power button and the end call button are linked to the same button. The difference is, THESE BUTTONS ARE NOT ON THE TOP OF THE HANDSET. They are on the face of the phone, NEXT TO THE CALL BUTTON.
Like i have said before, switching the end call button to the power button on the Rhodium would be chaos. For the mass majority of users, making the end call button NOT end the call, is ridiculous, and confusing. If you were to go out, and buy an Android handset, you would not even have a power button other than the end call button.
Yes, the only way everyone will be happy, is if you can choose how you want the buttons mapped.
i was thinking not all android devices link the end call and standby buttons together, the nexus one and desire and legend all have them on the top. then when i looked up pictures, they had gotten rid of the send and end call buttons so of course they moved the stand by to the top. i wonder if you press that during a call, would it hand up.

Power button disconnects incoming calls whilst ringing

Whilst receiving an incoming call and the phone is ringing, if you press the power button it disconnects/hangs-up the call before you even get a chance to answer it. I often accidentally/unintentionally press it whilst pulling it out of my horizontal belt case! Grrrrrr.
Is there anyway to stop this occurring?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=683902 should give you a good start. That's the file with all (most?) key mappings. Figure out what the function to reject calls is, and then remove/remap it from the power key.
Thanks, but I haven't rooted my phone.
Waiting for Froyo release to decide if I should do that.

All I can say is either root & get dirty, or be careful when you pull it out.
Mind if I ask why you don't wanna root?
It IS a big problem with the call reject via the power button.
I wrote HTC support regarding this and got the following answer:
Hi Jan, Thank you for contacting us regarding Desire. Unfortunately there is no option to disable the reject call feature using the Power button. We have not had any feedback regarding this yet, but if this becomes a general problem - as in customers complaining over this feature - we will pass it on to our technical department in order for them to possibly make a change / fix for the devise. I will pass oyur feedback on to my superior, and if we have a You are welcome to contact us again for further assistance.
So I guess that I can only recommend that you all write to HTC Support regarding the Power Button issue - both the reject and the immidiate power on when the device is powered off.
my phone is rooted htc pico. how can i do that.. having same problem >_<

[Q] Prevent sleep during call

Hi,
I love my HTC One X but one thing drives me insane. Once I've been on a call for a minute, the screen goes to sleep and I can't get in to any of my apps like Calendar etc that I need to check during a call. The only button that responds is the power button which ends the call!
Can you please let me know how to prevent sleep during a call?
I've just bought Tasker, so I'm hoping that I can do something with that, is that the best place to start?
Thanks,
JD
It shouldn't be doing that by default.
You can turn on/off the 'power button ends call' option in accessibility

I'm facing the same problem, other than the Power button terminating the call.
This is getting on to my nerves now!
Is there a fix to this?

Perfect, that fixed it, thanks!
How do I prevent the screen from going to sleep, while on a call?
If I am on a call and I get a call waiting tone, I look at my screen and it's blank. Similarly, like I said earlier, at the end of the call too, I can't end the call because the screen is again blank!
The Power key seems to wake it up, but it is annoying to keep pressing it all the time.

Phone key pad not re-displaying

I have a google unlocked galaxy nexus phone with JB installed. Sometimes when making a phone call using the dial pad, the display will not turn back on when removed from my ear. Today I was on a call and needed to use the keypad and all I had was a blank display. Nothing I did could get it to display. I had to remove the battery to end the call. Sometimes this happens and all I have to do is tap the power button to bring up the display. Is this a known problem? Is there a setting that I can adjust? Thanks.
Hi jjthenovice,
did you find a solution for this behaviour - I posted a similar experience, but so far nobody responded to my post.
Having the power button set up to end the call is A solution - but not a very good one.
