Did I just f up my Evo? - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I had followed direction to root and everything else. I have used Rom Manager to install the fresh 0.1d rom. Everything went fine. However I wanted to see what the other roms were like. I used the Rom Manager to boot into the clockwork recovery (v1.8.1.9) but went I try to load a different rom or .zip it starts the process and brings up the progrss bar and the closes out without doing anything. Now I am stuck with half a rom (bits and pieces of fresh). I do STILL have root but that seems to be the only good thing. What do I need to do to flash a rom????

???
Cmon people. Lil help, please!?

Try using the manual evorecovery instead. It works better for me.

id just just reflash it.. power off the phone, while holding down hit power, then when it the screen comes back up hold up and power, then do the wipes and flash from zip

flash through the manual recovery, this should work best... gives a you a chance to wipe everything, which I am not sure if clockwork rom manager does, i may be wrong though

You did a nand backup right.
If you did just boot into recovery and restore it.
If didn't follow the dorrctios for pushing the Rom zip file while in recovery.

yea boot into recovery, when the examination shows up, use the recovery-windows.bat. then wipe and restore

rooted....now lost! Please help

I did the root and I have the WiMAX setting and Wifi Tethering is working somewhat but I cant figure out how to flash my rom..I dl'd DamageControl 3.2 but i dont know what to really do now...When i try use ROM Manager I get the error..."an error occurred while attempting to run priviledge commands!" I'm just lost as to what i do now to start using a different rom
Bump.....ANYONE?!
So the following questions would need to be answered:
1) What version of stock were you running before you rooted? (i.e. 1.47, 1.32)
2) What root method did you use?
3) What recovery do you have?
4) If you have wireless tether working than you would need to have installed a custom kernel, which one did you install?
I'm sorry that no one else has tried to assist you in this, however, next time please post this in Q&A as this is for development purposes.

Okay during the process of rooting my device, ebo 4g, v1.3x
I ran into the same problem, you have to or I'm sure on this forum just do some research,.....
In RA, dalvik wipe, cache wipe and phone wipe. Then I flashed the rom via sd card, using clockwork custom recovery. If you used Simple root 3 click process you should have clock work.Via step 2.
Rename the Rom to update.zip and place in root sdcard.
Adb reboot recovery
Update.zip from SD card
Finnish do full system wipe and dalvik cache.
Make sure you are nand protected before flashing.
Via step 3
I don't know if this mighhelp just some recent stuff I ran into. Rooted my g1 a WHILE back. Hope these noobietips help lol

Once you get 1.47 and singed sigs then do DC ROM again.

adb reboot recovery just reboots your phone into recovery mode. once your in that do all the wipes i think its 3 dlvk, data and something else. power off the phone once more then boot to recovery again. now one of the options is flash from zip go there and you should find whatever rom your trying to flash. also you should be putting your zipped rom files in the root directory of your sdcard. on a side not if your on a mac dont download them with safari use firefox or something else

nova,
I had the same boot loop issue. My thread for it here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=728955
The issue was that I wasn't totally 100% rooted. By carefully following these directions, I was able to resolve my issue:

I hope this helps also, I did it using the "PC" method. If you have questions regarding those instructions I'd be happy to share my personal experience.

Errr... maybe? Superuser permission, etc. certainly doesn't come with stock. It depends on the ROM you installed. Here's one way to find out...
Go to Settings -> About Phone -> Software Information and check the "Build Number". AFAIK it's impossible to install DamageControl without full root (I tried to myself before fixing my root and going to Fresh 1.0.1) so if that's what you have I'd say you're good.
There may be a better way but that's all I know.

Root guide and rom manager?

Is there a basic guide for rooting the epic?
I've rooted my droid a while ago, and loved the rom manager...
is there rom manager support?
Yea there is man. Go to the development thread and one of the stickies is for the wiki development page. That will have the basics and link you to the needed pages with directions. The rom manager we use on epic is clockwork recovery rom manager. Its simple to use and easy to install. Read up though first.

problem backing up my current ROM
everytime I use ROM Manager to backup my current ROM it goes to Recovery and then when I reboot the phone nothing shows up my Manage and Restore backups in ROM Manager.
Any thoughts?
Bj
Use backup and restore within cwm, not rom manager.
But you should be able to do this from ROM manager, right?
and what is cwm, i'm new at all this
Rom manager sucks for the epic. You need to use a custom kernel to use rom manager. It won't flash cwm for you on stock kernel.
Bj do you have cwm installed? Clockwork mod is a custom recovery mod. You use to NAND backup, flash, partition, clear battery stats and mire. You can only install it from a pc.
Maybe I'm slow
Maybe I'm slow here.... walk me through this.
I rooted my phone.
I have ROM Manager, which does include cwm. I purchased the paid app for ROM manager, but nothing seems to work, when i try to back up my phone boots to recovery and nothing is saved. when I search for new roms none show up.
I'm using a mac at home, but i rooted my phone on my work pc.
Please help me be able to install custom roms (froyo). please define terms and provide links if possible.
Bj
You rooted your phone good but rom manager will not flash clockwork for you. It says it dies but it won't. The only way to get cwm is to run the one click root plus clockwork. If yo turn your phone off and hold power, camera, and volume down what does the text look like. If you see blue writing and like 4 options that is the stock recovery. If it's green with a good bit of options that is what you want for flashing roms. But the new version of cwm3 is out and that is orange writing. For flashing all you do is put the rom on the root of the sd card, boot into cwm, wipe cache, data, and dalvik three times each. Then go to install zip from sd card, choose zip, and scroll till you find the rom on the sd card and hit the camera button to flash it.

Basically, do what he said. But, to run most of the Froyo ROMS, you need a DK-28 modem. Now, I'm not the one to provide the information to what that is, but all I know if that you need it.
Directions taken from BThomas22x (the maker of VIPEROM which is what I use):
As for use of Odin, It's actually a lot easier than it seems. I'll give you a quick runthrough.
1. Download and extract Odin, as well as the Modem and PIT files. (You DO NOT flash the ROM through Odin, The ROM is flashed through Clockwork.)
2. Open Odin. At this point, you have to put your phone in download mode. To do so, simply hold the number 1 on the keyboard, and the power button at the same time. Once in download mode, plug the USB cable into the phone. Only plug the phone in AFTER Odin is up and running or Odin won't pick up the phone.
3. Navigate to where you downloaded the modem and pit files and place the PIT file where it says "PIT" and the modem.bin file where it says "phone".
4. On the left side there is an options box. Make sure that "reboot" is the ONLY thing that's checked.
5. Now you're ready to flash the new modem. (Remember, the modem does NOT need to be downloaded, it's just a bonus feature) Hit start and allow it to run through it's process. When finished, the block above the port that your USB is showing will turn either green or red for pass or fail. At this point I haven't heard of anyone failing.
When Odin is done doing it's thing, it will automatically reboot the phone for you. Then you're setup with the new modem!

Head over to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=864445 if you need more help/the download links don't work.
Now, that's the DK-28 modem. YOU NOW MUST USE ROMS WITH THE DK-28 MODEM! I'm pretty sure most of the 2.2 (Froyo) ROMs use DK-28, but someone might want to double check me. It's good to learn how to use Odin anyway since it's your way out if you brick your phone.
I think I was going to include something else, but I'm too tired to remember... lol. Just send me a PM if you need any more help and I'll get back to you later tomorrow or just keep posting here.
Odin gave me a pass.
Now where do I go to get my ROM, can I still use ROM manager or should I go another route?
THanks!

And also what is the best way to back up my current ROM now?
Forget ROM manager.
Get your roms from the dev forum.
Put them on your sdcard where you can find them.
Flash them with clockwork.
The best way to back up your current rom is to select "backup" from within clockworkmod. It will not, however, backup your kernel. The easiest way to restore a backup is to reflash the original rom, then advanced restore->restore data in cwm.
The only way to get cwm is to run the one click root plus clockwork.

That isn't the only way, but it is definitely the easiest if you aren't comfortable fiddling around with a command line on your phone.

Yes the one click will still work. It will check if you have root and skip the exploit when it isn't needed. It will then proceed to install busybox, the reidirector, and clockworkmod.
You can find the one-click version 2.5.5 in the dev forum. It is one of the stickies at the top of that forum.

reboot into recovery question

So im following a way to put a rom onto my phone, let me post the steps and go from there
1. The first step is to download Modaco’s Custom ROM from here and save it on your desktop. done
2. Once done, download ROM Manager from Market on your phone. done
3. Once the ROM Manager is installed, launch app and flash ClockworkMod Recovery. done
4. Now after flashing ClockworkMod Recovery, connect your phone to the computer. done
5. Once your phone is connected, mount SD card and copy the earlier downloaded ROM file to SD card root. done
now this is where im having an issue.... i know where it says to reboot into recovery, but when i do this, i get a black screen with a pic of my phone and a red triangle with an exclamation mark on it.... what am i doing wrong?
6. After this launch ROM Manager again and tap on Reboot into Recovery.
7. Once you are in recovery, scroll down to Apply Zip from SD card and select.
8. Now wait for the installation to finish. The ROM size is 257 MB, so you can well imagine the time it will consume.
9. Once the installation is finished, reboot your phone.
This means ClockworkMod recovery Did not stick, sometimes it takes a couple of tries to get it to stick, so go back into Rom Manager and Press "Flash ClockworkMod recovery" Again, then reboot into recovery, if you still see the black screen with the trangle and ! (this is stock recovery) , just pull the battery and repeat the steps of Flashing CWM recovery again untill it sticks, It took mine three times before it would stick. Also you must make sure you have S-off and root.
well from all the reading i did, using the visionary+ would be enough of a root... granted my s-off isnt there, its still saying s-on.... and on another post made, i tried to follow the instructions, but i cant seem to change this...
suggestions on how?
The other day I gave you a link to a thread on how to properly get S-off and root on your phone, you choose not to use that link, instead you used Visionary, so I am going to assume that you do not have ABD set up on your home computer, so now here is another link to a new thread on how to get temp-root with Visionary, which is what you have now, then perm-root S-off with Gfree, follow the instructions in this new link from start to finish and you should have S-off when its all done. HERE IS THE LINK. I suggest you do a lot more reading before proceeding any further because it seems to me you really don't understand what you are doing and Mod'ing your phone and making a mistake can have the potential to BRICK your phone. Having root and S-off are two different things and you need S-off in order to flash custom Roms and recovery.
I still recommend getting S-off and root using the method HERE, its the safest way to root and get S-off, this is the link I gave you the other day to the XDA Wiki.
im using this link
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=928160
and trying to follow it... but for some reason, when i do this step
$ su
# cp /sdcard/root_files/perm_root /data/local/perm_root
i get a msg that says cp:cannot create '/local/perm_root': no such file or directory
yet im following the steps exactly
Did you make sure to unzip the root_files.zip before placing all the files on the root of your sd card, do not just place the root_files.zip on your sd card it must be unzipped first.
Also make sure you put a space between perm_root and /data
I put a red * where the space needs to be.
From what you typed below it looks like you didn't.

This is what it should look like, without the red * of course,
Code:
# cp /sdcard/root_files/perm_root[COLOR="Magenta"]*[/COLOR] /data/local/perm_root
well i got everything to work there just before you posted this, and i proceeded to install this rom found here
hxxp://android.modaco.com/content/t-mobile-g2-g2-modaco-com/322825/with-sense-10-feb-r3-htc-vision-g2-z-modaco-custom-rom-with-online-kitchen/
followed the steps to make it work, got into recovery, let it install via the steps listed above
now the phone is restarting over and over again.... and it keeps going to the htc quietly brilliant logo, then has the modaco logo under it... but it keeps going over and over....
ideas?
You are in a boot loop, did you wipe data prior to flashing the new ROM? The rom you downloaded might be a corupt download, try to redownload it again and flash it again. Also, just curious why MODACO rom there are so many other better choices available, IMHO.
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
well i just saw that it was one with a sense rom, so i thought i would try it out.... and this rom said no need to wipe data... thats part of why i chose it...
also how do i re download it and get it on my sd card? when i cant connect to the computer now
also what is a good solid sense rom, that i dont have to delete everything off my phone first, and ill gladly try that out... remember im new to this... so all the info you give me now is totally uncharted areas,
so lmk
Cheers
I would use Virtuous I think its the best sense rom out, you should always do a full data wipe when changing roms, when updating the same rom its not really needed, as far as getting it onto your sd card, I would just pull it out of the phone and put it into a card reader on my computer and then install the new files that way then place it back into your phone .
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
ok and do you have a quick link i can trouble you for the virtuous rom?
and how do i back up whats on my phone now, i dont want to loose anything thats on there.....and since im stuck in this boot loop, im stuck for a way to back it up
Ok to make a back up from where you are stuck at, pull the battery then put it back in hold volume down then press power, this boots it into bootloader, use the volume button and scroll down to recovery and select it by pressing the power button, it should boot into CWM recovery, then press backup and restore, then select backup and it should back up your current rom, to do this in the future just use rom manager to make your back ups, here's the link to Virtuous http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=837042
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
but wouldnt that copy my current rom thats stuck in a boot loop?
Sorry you are right , so it looks like there would be nothing for you to back up. Prior to flashing MODACO you should have made a copy of your stock rom w/root but its to late for that now, so theres nothing to do now but flash a new rom.
Remember when you flash a new rom it could take a few minutes to boot the first time so give it a few minutes.
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
Making the nandroid backup wouldn't hurt though. If there is stuff you really need, you can transfer the backup to a computer and then extract the contents of the data and system images with an unyaffs tool. Then you can restore at least some things manually once you have your new ROM up and running (since you'll then have the APKs and their respective data directories).
Kind of a pain and may not work depending on what you want, but if there is stuff you really need, better to at least have the opportunity to recover than not.
so I installed the virtuous Rom and now I cant use the market... is there a fix for this?

Try fixing permissions, boot into recovery, select advance, select fix permissions, reboot. If that doesnt help, use titanium to wipe the data from the market app and see if that helps.
how do I do the titanium backup part? I tried the recovery part, didn't work.....

No roms will flash, they all hang on the white boot screen. Ever heard of this? wtf?

It is slowly driving me mad. I can get into recovery and restore my current ROM (leaked GB base). However, if I flash a new rom - any rom - it flashes, reboots into white HTC boot screen, and just hangs there.
I'm using ROM manager, clockwork.
What do I do? It doesn't make sense.
Thanks for any advice.
Later.
1. Stop using ROM Manager
2. Go to the link below and download the PC36IMG.zip file for amon RA v2.3 and place it on the root of your SD card.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=705026
3. Shutdown your device.
4. Simultaneously press the DOWN volume button and the power button until your device starts. There will be a short pause and then a few lines of text will scroll across the screen. Afterwards, the bootloader will automatically detect the PC36IMG.zip file and prompt you to install it. Follow the easy prompts to install. Installation will take less than 10 seconds to complete. Afterwards, reboot into your new recovery. Go to the backup/restore menu and make a nandroid backup of your current setup.
5. Now go to the wipe menu and wipe EVERYTHING in it EXCEPT the SD card.
6. Go to the flash menu and flash the rom you desire to flash.

Was having the same trouble. I think Rom Manager has some flaws cause it works fine from Recovery

ROM Manager has its uses, but, in my opinion, it is far too easy to simply boot or reboot into recovery and flash, especially with amon RA. It has a common sense menu layout.

Just MY opinion, but ROM Manager is useless. I see more people have issues because of ROM Manager. My advice, dump it and do everything in Recovery.

Hmmm, so what happens if I'm still having this problem after trying this fix? I've been having the "can't flash any other roms because they all hang at the white evo4g screen" problem and have been stuck on the same rom for over a month now. Is there something else I can try if this doesn't work?

I would do a clean wipe, factory/data, cache, and dalvik, then go to the bootloader, select the clear storage for overkill, then try to flash a rom.

+1.....again
Thanks for the quick reply man. Tried the wipe of data, cache and dalvik, rebooted to bootloader and cleared storage. Tried to install a rom and still hung up at the htc evo 4g white boot screen. Anything else I can try?
Which rom are you trying to flash? I would re-download it to make sure its not corrupted in any fashion.
Hmmm I was wondering if that might be the problem, because I've gotten this rom to flash ONCE before. It's the End of Days rom from Magnus. I got it to work the first time I tried to flash it but then at some point I rebooted it and it started boot looping to the point where I couldn't get it to load anymore. That's when I wiped, tried to reflash the rom and all this madness started. I'll try to redownload, but I figured if the ROM worked once, it should be able to work again... right? I mean I'm not flashing it any differently.

It should work.
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/19699565/PC36IMG.zip Place that on your sdcard, boot into the bootloader and flash it. That'll reflash the amon_ra 2.3 recovery, then try flashing the rom again.
Yea I tried the Pc36img thing already too. Let the bootloader find it, applied the update, rebooted into recovery, reflashed, nothing. Same results, hung up on white evo screen.
I'm actually noticing that when I try to wipe the "sd ext" in Amon Ra's wipe menu, it just says "skipping format sdext" or something like that, is that normal?

That's normal; it only says that because you don't have that partition. The only thing I can think of at this point would be to backup everything, quickly unroot, then re-root.
My Evo is doing something similar. I flash ANY of the new Sense 2.x (or Sense 3.0) ROMs, and they just reboot on the white HTC EVO 4G screen. Ive wiped everything, used Calks Format All, Im using the latest Amons, etc to no avail. However, all AOSP GB ROMs (MIUI,CM7, EoD, etc) work like a charm! Any kind soul that knows what the hell is going on with my phone?

Bootloop? Please help this soooper noober!

Sorry for my total noobness. I've just recently started this whole root awesomeness and I've hit a snag...... I'm sure there are many threads about my problem but I can't find one. I had CM 10.2 on my AT&T galaxy s3 and things were smooth and stable. Decided to try the "Collective" 4.3 ROM and SixShooter kernel. I put the zips in the phone (used the same gapps zip that was in there because I believe the Collective ROM is based off of the CM 10 ROM). Did a backup, then wiped chache, dalvick cache, system, and data (using TWRP recovery). Then did a multiple install of all three files in one action because TWRP lets you. so why not do it?
Rebooted, and I get the samsung logo, then sixshooter, then blank screen, vibration, pause, another vibration, then it starts all over. I can go into odin mode, or pull the battery to get it to stop.
Tried using odin to flash the .tar file, but it says PASS! and then the phone just automatically starts the loop again.
Was installing all 3 files (ROM, KERNEL, and Gapps zip files) at the same time a bad move?
I tried going back into recovery and it gives me the CWM recovery. Do I have TWRP AND CWM at the same time? Wierd. Tried wiping cache, and dalvik cache again and then rebooting, it still loops.
I'm at a a loss. I've watched a ton of videos and they all pretty much just say to find the right .tar and use odin to get back to stock. Like I said I've tried this and it just starts the loop again. Please help!! (I don't know a thing about ADB/terminal commands so if thats the fix I'll need my hand held) If theres a link to a thread that tells me how to get out of this I'd sure appreciate it. I greatly appreciate anyone who can take the time to explain to me what to do......
I would suggest booting into recovery and do the full wipe. Then just flash the ROM and gapps. If you're still bootlooping it could be a bad download of the ROM so if youve still got cm10.2 sitting around flash it instead. If that works I would look at downloading collective again. If not well maybe someone else has some input.

Ok, I just read the op again, and isn't the sixx shooter kernel packaged with the ROM? Also it states to factory data reset, wipe dalvik, install ROM, and the phone should reboot by itself do to a script, let phone settle, THEN boot back into recovery, flash gapps, wipe cache, reboot, enjoy! Maybe u shouldn't have flashed everything at once?
Yep, I'm a total tool. I installed everything in one action. ROM, gapps, kernel. Guessing I didn't need the kernel. And I should have read more closely the collective thread as it says to do the ROM. let it reboot, settle, etc. So the install all of them in one step is where I forked it up. I got it though. Pulled my head out and got the newest TWRP .img file and updated my recovery with odin. ROM is loaded and sweet as all get out!!
Crisis averted. Don't know what I would have done at work tomorrow without my podcasts and pandora! Thx for the help though. Love this forum.
Hmm. Okay, guess I don't have it completely sorted. I have gotten it to boot into the OS, let it sit a few. turned it off and tried to boot into recovery with vol+/home/power but it just starts it back up to the OS? Does the collective ROM change the way you get into recovery?

Should have the four way reboot in the power menu. Long press the power button, while the phone is on, select reboot recovery. See if that helps...
Nevermind, I got it. lol
Gotta let go of that power button after vibration......man it's late
