Vanilla Custom ROMs - some ( probably quite common ) questions? - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi there,
I've the best part of the afternoon flashing various roms in the hope of getting a usable vanilla rom but I keep coming up against various issues;
I've tried both Fxone & AhmgskMod's roms ( both based off CM ) but the sensors don't work on either ( the brightness one is the main issue ), also when I flash them after a clean wipe ( cache & user data ) they have trouble saving my Google account & won't let me create a Facebook sync account. Is this a known / common issue or is there a way round it?
I really love the Vanilla look but I couldn't get a Nexus One due to my contract, are there any other roms I could try? Failing that, what is the best combination of mods I could use on the MCR 3.1 rom to get that Vanilla feel ( white skin, launcher, etc )?
I appreciate anyone taking the time to reply, thanks!

[Q] about Velox Rom

sorry for posting that here but i still can't reply on threads ....
the question about this rom
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2171430
every time i go to recovery mode and i follow these instructions for GB firmware :
From GB\ICS\JB\AOKP:
Quote:
Wipe Data (ok)
Wipe Cache (ok)
Wipe Dalvik Cache ( can't find it on my recovery mode)
Wipe Battery stats ( can't find it on my recovery mode)
Install the .zip ( it always say that there is no enough space to install)
Install gapps
Reboot
... so please i need to know how can i walk with this instructions and how can i find theses options ... !!
also about gapps file .... should i use recovery mode and istall ZIP file to install it same as the rom file ?
Thx in advance!
Those options are in the recovery mode. The wipe dalvik cache it's on advanced option as far as I remember. Battery stats on ClockworkMod was removed on the actual version as far as I know.

there is no advanced option on the recovery mode on my Galaxy W ,,,, i think i should install CMW but what program should i use to do that ?
Oh, you don't have CMW? You can't flash it a rom without using it. You need to follow this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1941028
Summary, you need root on your phone and then flash the CWM. Only after that you can follow the instructions on each thread of the room you want to install.
First, read everything carefully . Mistakes can happen if you don't know what you are doing
Hi all,
Just walked pass and finally found a thread in relation to my interest. (i'm new to XDA and couldn't post on the development board:crying
Thanks Miki2O for his great work on the Velox ROM and I successfully flash both the ROM and GAPPS onto my W. So far, I can tell those who are interested that the ROM is amazing in terms of performance and smoothness. Having played around with it for days, please if anyone knows if my doubt can be solved here:
- I read from another thread that kennel of 2.X might be of better battery performance, considering the balance between performance and battery life, is it possible if another kennel can be flashed in my W and how? As mentioned in Miki2O's thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=2171430), there's only one kennel 3.X which seems to boost the performance.
- Does any Velox user find irregularity in using GPS or precisely google map. Mine jumps and jams upon locating.
- Instead of the build-in analogue clock on CM10, I've tried installing other clock widget but it kept lagging behind the system clock. Probably it's the problem of the widget. Is there other build in choices for clock under the Velox ROM?
- It's then the switch off the monitor, is there a choice that it won't "flash" when I turn off the screen? It's kind of irritating
- Lastly, , I found a problem of Whatsapp messenger that it doesn't connect (or sync to server) to receive messege not until I actually open and get in the Whatsapp. For this I would not be able to receive msg when I just idle my phone. In relation to this, I found it under Setting, I was unable to choose auto-sync for Whatsapp while uncheck auto-sync for Google account, helppppp~~~
Sorry for so many questions and hopefully miki would see it or it helps other users to know more about the ROM.:highfive:

okay, i'll just try to asnwer what i know about this rom & ur q's.
-veloxrom is based on arco's cm10 a6 (jb 4.1.2) (haven't tried)
-as far as i know, cm10 a1 to cm10 a4.1 uses 2.6.x stock kernel (haven't tried) but u can't use 2.6.x kernel on velox since it uses 3.0.x
-each kernel have its own way to do the flashing

[Q] Various problems

Hello !
First of all I would like to thank the creators and developers for the amazing G Pad.
I've always wanted to try various roms and kernels, unfortulately I'm always encountering problems despite following tutorials...
For example I've understood that I need to flash the 4.2 stock base if I want to flash customs roms. When I do that, with a rooted device on which TWRP 2.7.0 is installed, the only thing the tablet does at startup (when I want to flash the rom) is running some sort of script and it reboots (and I get the initial configuration wizard)... I've also tried to wipe data/system/cache before flashing the 4.2 base but the script thing was still happening and of course the only way to get the tablet back to a usable state is running the LG support tool that flashes the default system.
Then, I've tried CM 11 based roms. It goes well, but for some reasons the tablet seems less responsible for things like the screen rotation, as compared with the 4.4 stock rom. I also have problems with Google Play Movies : I can't view movies in high definition. The same goes with Youtube, the maximum I can get is 720p (when the 4.4 stock rom allows me to viex in 1080p). Even with tuning the dpi scale with a root app these problems remain (although the global interface seems smaller).
And i've tried LG 4.2/4.4 stock based roms, but the android system or keyboard keeps crashing at startup...:crying:
So for the moment I'm stuck with the 4.4.2 LG stock rom. The LG interface is not bad but I don't really like it (less than pure android experience) and there is some lag especially when viewing videos. And there are some apps I never use. I can flash custom kernels to help with the gamma issues but that's all.
Maybe i'm missing something, in that case maybe someone here will help me to find the solutions. It would be great !

Bought a G3 , What do I do now?

Hey guys, I've just received my new G3
My knowledge with android phones is very weak, having only rooting my 1st Gen Nexus 7 to and flashing stock roms & owning a windows phone .
Is it worth flashing a new rom to my G3 or should I stick with stock? Any ROM's which are highly regarded? How would I do this + root?
I will be having a 32gb memory card in this phone, Is it better to install everything on the SD card in the first place e.g apps, pictures e.c.t. so if I decide to flash a new ROM I wouldn't lose everything.
Also is there any way to get my contacts from windows live onto my new phone?
I would greatly appreciate your help
* Use it !
* be aware of the sd card, it should be a modern one so you don't risk performance
* don't bother installing stuff on the card - apps are lost anyway
* you can keep personal media / pics / etc on the card, that is a reasonable practice ...
* the current state of software (lollipop) doesn't allow root / flashing stuff; however there are options for kit kat (if you are still on it) and moving then to lollipop keeping your custom parts that allow third party flashing (my 2 cents this is not worth it at the moment ...)
* moving contacts along should be easy by either syncing them to some cloud service (outlook maybe) or exporting / importing them - LG software knows how to import popular formats ...
If you are new read phone FAQ then.
Root it and install xposed framework
you wouldn't recommend any of the lollipop custom roms?
what does xposed framework do?
i am in a similar situation as OP, have been away from android development scene since the S3.

As above. I was looking at the AndroidNow HD rom which seems to look good but is it worth the upgrade over stock?
At the time of writing this, I've successfully rooted my G3 & my current firmware is 4.4.2
how are you finding stock? is it a smooth experience?
im getting mine tomorrow and going on holiday on Saturday so i need to make sure i have the best experience =D

It allows you to tweak a wide range of things, it's fantastic, but only works on Dalvik, not Art. So you have to use KitKat.

Is it worth installing CustomROM?

Hello,
I'm thinking about installing some CustomROM last days, but I'm a little bit sceptical about it. Is it worth loosing the warranty? My device is circa 6 months old so I don't want to mess it up to home-unrecoverable state (CEDRIC XT1676, 3/16, DualSIM). What are the biggest advantages and disadvantages of installing CustomROM?
Also, I have some requirements (they're sorted by importance - first one is the most important, the last one is less important)
- it has to be faster and more stable than StockROM - it's the major reason I wanna install CustomROM
- I need Moto Actions (at least double shake to turn on the light) to be working
- I need DualSIM to be working too - if only one SIM would work on DualSIM phone, the phone would lost a part of its potential
- in-built camera app has to be working
- the more AOSP look (interface, launcher, font, animations etc.), the better it is for me
- it should be built on Oreo (8.0/8.1 - doesn't matter) - I think that putting a Nougat CustomROM is a step back these days when a lot of stable CustomROMs for G5 were already released
Is there any ROM that can fit my requirements? Thanks in advance.
Read the rom features and requirements on the first post of the rom thread
This will also include what is or is not working
There is also a thread answering your question about advantages/disadvantages & it was only on page 1 of this Q&A thread so please search before posting
https://forum.xda-developers.com/g5/help/rooting-flashing-advantages-t3781467
I know, I can find working/non-working list in every thread but I want an opinion by someone who changes or was changing ROM more often than socks I mean by someone, who can compare custom with custom (which fit my requirements) and stock with custom (again, with one that fit my requirements).
It's very rare for stock camera to be working on oreo, though footej works just fine.
When it comes to the speed, it depends more on the kernel and what tweaks you have applied rather than the rom itself, though of course, a less bloated rom will always be at least slightly faster.
If you want speed, I recommend installing l speed, you can choose between favouring battery life or performance.
no it's not worth it my moto g5 is hardbricked caz i flashed a stupid 64 bit rom and no one was able to return to stock rom after flashed these 64 bit roms becase if you returned to stock without losing imel like me you will eventually lose imel when you update you stock rom if motorola sends you an ota
so you want a custom rom ; flash a 32 bit one or don't flash one at all

Looking for Custom ROM focused on privacy

Hi all,
I'm new on this forum, so thanks for your help!
I'd like to install a custom ROM focused on privacy to avoid personal data leaks and spying. There seems to be plenty of options out there so I dont know which one to choose, and if it'll work on my phone.
I use:
- Lenovo vibe K5 plus A6020a46
- Android version 5.1.1
- Material version H201
Also I wonder if normally available apps will work on a custom ROM: I use quite a few apps for work and want to make sure I can keep them with me after I switch to a custom google-free spy-free ROM (xpl: spotify, nordvpn, tutanota, Mega, wordreference, Qwant...)
Any advice on ROMs and how to proceed (Can I just use TWERP?) is very welcome!
Thanks
Basically Stick to STOCK ROM and install privacy securing apps like NordVpn and Avast. I never saw any custom rom with focus on privacy. They're mainly made for either Battery Life increase or Performance.
"Also I wonder if normally available apps will work on a custom ROM: I use quite a few apps for work and want to make sure I can keep them with me after I switch to a custom google-free spy-free ROM (xpl: spotify, nordvpn, tutanota, Mega, wordreference, Qwant...)"
It does work. If it doesn't let you install it, it's because you are on custom rom, but Magisk has a tweak to bypass it ( It modifies liboemcrypto.so) So it tricks Play Store into thinking you're on stock rom/without root. Else, if you still can't install an app it's either because your version of android does not support it ( you must be on a newer version, seek installing it through custom rom) or because it is made for a specific phone ( with another architecture, etc..) If the custom rom doesn't have play store, you'll need to reflash it and then flash also Gapps: https://opengapps.org/ . Also don't forget to factory reset after flashing a new ROM.
