Can someone please help me. I am googling, xda, phandroid, htcevohacks and not finding any clear cut answer to this question: Can i root my evo running 1.32.651.6 (SD update)? i see there are ways to root with the new update 1.47........., so since i cant find any clear cut answers regarding 1.32.651.6 should i accept the update to 1.47.651.1? I am so confused some people say they have used toast method to root 1.32.651.6 and others who say that it is impossible, can someone please help me. Thank you
Regular simpleroot
I almost feel bad...all I saw was ".6" (Thinking it was referencing 2.2) and I was about to facepalm.
Some have had problems with the original simpleroot (I was one of them)...go here:

and do Toasts Part 1 and Part 2 step for step. If you run into any roadblocks, just post back to this thread and we will be happy to help you out.
I was a total Android/Linux noob when I got the Evo. I came from WinMo and as far as modding goes, it felt like I went from Champ to Chump. Read, make mistakes, read some more, fix your mistakes, and learn. It doesn't get any better than that. Just remember, we are a community that is here to help, not do it for you.
Finally ROOTED!!
OK guys i have rooted my EVO thanks to u guys. I have installed Froyo DeOdexed RevE.1, I have downloaded rom manager from the market. Now do i always have to wipe every time i load a new rooted rom? Also do i have to go into the shell with evo connected to PC to get to the menu for wiping and loading roms? Do i also have to load the updated radios and wimax or do the rooted roms come with them already? Many thanks.

Wiping is advised when flashing a new ROM, unless you are upgrading to a newer version of the same ROM (or if the author says no-wipe is required). Wiping is almost always required if you are changing between different ROM.
You can enter recovery by turning phone off, pressing power + volume down, or booting into recovery from apps such as Rom Manager, Spare Parts, Quickboot.
Yes, I noticed my spelling mistake, How DO* I flash a ROM.
UPDATE: I just now learned that you cannot flash a ROM without root. As we all know, root is currently unachievable with the OTA Froyo update, but I did not know you needed root in order to flash a ROM. I flashed the Stock .3 Froyo ROM in recovery mode from the UNrooted stock 2.1 ROM, so I figured it was the same. I hope this helps out others as it has helped me!
How do I flash a custom ROM, and which ROM should I choose?
Yes, I've searched, but I've found no tutorial made after August 3rd, when the OTA Froyo update came about.
I am currently running Stock Froyo (.6), I know I cannot root this (yet), and I'm not sure where to begin...
I have basic knowledge in recovery mode, but dont know if I need to flash a ROM AND a kernel, radios, etc...
I just want root because I am tired of not being able to install multiple apps from the Market without it.
This is what I want in the ROM:
-Root
-Froyo
-Full Camera Support (8MP, 720p Rear, 1.3MP Front)
-4G
-Market
-Full Sense
-Wifi N wouldn't hurt
-No Cap FPS wouldn't hurt
-Full HDMi and HID support wouldn't hurt
-No custom boot animation (I know I can't get too picky here) would be awesome
I pretty much just want a Rooted stock Froyo ROM if you catch my drift.
I've seen Nief's Rom comparison chart (https://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=0Aguc0npJCrWxdEFyU2NRNG1jNnRkY2trdXBsYlJLdWc&hl=en#gid=0)
and EVio 2 Sense v1.1 is looking like my best bet?
As far as how to flash a ROM, I don't need screenshots...I'm very computer literate, I just haven't flashed an android ROM before. Something like this would be more than adequate:
1. Download ROM (zip file)
2. Copy to the root of SD card
3. Hold Key1+Key2 upon boot to boot into recovery mode
4. Select Blah
5. Select Blah
6. Select Blah
7. Wait Blah minutes
8. Blah!
This would be greatly appreciated, and I know others could also use this information.
not trying to beat a dead horse, but if youre running ota .6, you cant root, there is no where to begin.
The more popular roms will have everything you want. Im currently running EViO 1.0.2 (i think) and i have most of what your list requires. Sense + HID dont go together, so thats out. Wifi N sure why not, im not sure if its built into the kernel that im using.
But I digress, you cant root yet, therefore you cant flash roms. When the time comes where you can root, there will be a very indepth tutoral on how.
Oh....
That is terrible! I didn't know you needed root in order to flash a new ROM!
I thought it was similar to how I flashed the early .3 Froyo update from Sprint in recovery mode....
How unfortunate! I know understand why everyone is so upset about OTA updating to .6!

Most of the questions are answered in my comparison chart, the parts that are incomplete are just mainly the battery tests. If you are confused on reading the chart, ask. I'm looking for ways to make it better and easier for users to read(besides adding the battery tests. They take a long time and I do work and need my phone, so hard to do).
Oh, and Nenn, thank you very much. You just answered many of my questions.

Sorry for the double post! I'm at work and must click "Continue" every some odd minutes to be in forums, and it refreshes my pages..
Nief, I noticed after I scrolled to the right of the spreadsheet, it was very useful and I will edit my first post. I would recommend putting the battery test results at the very end, and start with the camera column first! I also assume that "Yes" under camera means full 8MP camera support?
Thanks again, guys
not being an ass but if you searched you would have known you couldn't root with .6 ota
Well if you did have full root, a search would have shown you what you want in a ROM is easy..
stock rom (rooted)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=743352
stock ROM (rooted deodex)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=743781
and the kernels to unlock what you want
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=719763
another kernel..
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=754128
--edit--
but like it's been pointed out many times, you can not currently root the 2.2 OTA. You would have had to have it unlocked prior to any OTA updates
Thank you.
Not being an ass, but had you read my second post, you would have noticed that I was not aware that you needed root to flash a ROM.
I am fully aware we cannot yet root OTA Stock Froyo. I told you, I searched. It's absolutely everywhere.
I figured people have wanted root, but have not wanted to flash a ROM onto their phones.
Nothing in my search; however, yielded anything stating you cannot flash a ROM without root. I will edit my initial post to make this clear.
Thanks for all of the replies.

The 'Yes' means both camera work as they are intended to, 8mp in back 1.3 in front.
Hi all,
Please can you help me with the end questions, a quick background of what i've done so far.
I have been a member of Modaco for a while and used to own a Orange San Francisco, first android phone. I learnt a bit with that i.e rooting and updating to Paul's modaco rom's, market apps etc.
I have since bought a HTC desire and joined XDA which is a (superb forum), I'm really happy with my desire its on O2 contact and is the white newer version.
I was really confused with regards to rooting as the bootloader was high 0.93 so couldnt use some methods but newer posts showed that it was as easy as downloading unrevoked. Again had some problems rooting, realised that HTC sync must be installed first and then removed otherwise unrevoked will not pick up your phone.
Unrevoked rooted and installed Clockwork recovery, I then read about Amron Ra which is apparently more stable than Clockwork when installing Rom's, some posts suggested installing Rom manager and using flash recovery option, then alternative flash option in Rom manager to install AmonRa. So I installed Rom Manager it installed a newer version of Clockwork but when I then went to install alternative flash this option was blanked and not available.
After reading again I learnt I could flash Amron ra with unrevoked 3.0, you must go to file and custom recovery then find Amron Ra the version i installed was
recovery-RA-desire-v2.0.0-CM.img, I think this is the latest?.
Unrevoked went through the process, but stopped (oh no i thought this is going to get bricked) luckily everything was ok, after reading again I learnt that once rooted if your using unrevoked again its best to factory reset, so I backed everything up using Clockwork and made my first nand backup, I also packed up my installed apk's.
After factory reset, unrevoked did its magic and walla Amron Ra installed.
Now for the next step where I have some questions, unlike the orange san francisco the htc desire has loads of roms, some with sense (which i dont really know what is exactly yet) some froyo again what is froyo?, and some miui and some non sense.
So to a neebie where do you begin?
1. I have read about partitioning your sd card ext 2, 3 and 4, are these needed to use specific Roms and which ext do you need as it is very confusing?, I like the miui rom (MIUI XJ D2EXT X-PART 1.2.11) again there are 3 downloads there which should I download?
2. If the ext are needed must you have all 4 ext on a card and if so how much do you allocate for each if you have an 8gb card for example I read somewhere that the ext effects speed how can this be?
3. What are kernels I seem to be reading up about them a lot but no one really explains what they do, are they needed when installing a new Rom and can you mix and match different kernels with roms?.
4. Why is updating the radio on Rom's so important?, I see new roms then radio files must these be flashed?.
5. What is a dalvik cache clean is it the same as factory reset?
6. If I install a miui rom, which I'm interested in to start will there be any difficulties in later installing other sense or non sense roms and how do I go about avoiding these problems?.
7. What is the latest and best Miui rom available at the moment is it MIUI XJ D2EXT X-PART 1.2.11
These are all the questions for now, any help would be greatly appreciated at the moment I have a 4gb class 2 SD card but will be getting a 8gb class 6 in the next day or so, I mostly use the phone for texting, internet and sat nav.
Thanks a lot guys in advance.
All the best
Mav
You can refer to my answers over on MoDaCo
Wow, you have made quite a novel here
Half of your questions are answered TBH in the forums, so you should serach next time.
Okay
1.Which ext do you need? It will be 3 or 4, but every ROM thread specifies what do you need for it.
2. Of course you need all ext partitions on the SD Card. Again, there are ROM threads which specifies the size of the partitions. But usually look slike this:
* A2SD - Fat + Ext3/4, 0.5-1.5GB recommended.
* D2WE - Fat + Ext3/4, 1-1.5GB recommended.
* D2EXT - Fat + Ext4 + Ext4 + Swap (fat+1GB+0.3GB+0.1GB)
Can differ tough.
3.About the Kernels.
Tou can mix, but AOSP ROM with AOSP Kernel, Sense with Sense kernel. It is a chance that it will work otherwise, but will be buggy or phone won't boot.
4.If the ROM has new RIL (Radio interface layer) preinstalled, it is recommended to use a newer radios. Altough 5.11 version should work on every ROM.
5. No it is not.
dalvik cache is a program cache area for the program dalvik. Dalvik is a java based virtual machine that is the bases for running your programs (the ones that have the .apk extension). In order to make access times faster (because there's not JIT (just in time) compiler installed by default), the dalvik-cache is the result of dalvik doing a optimization of the running program. Sounds confusing. It's similar to the prefetch files in Windows.
Click to collapse
6. No problems should be - just do a full wipe (factory reset, wipe data, cache & dalvik).
7. Yeah, that is the latest version I know of.
Hope youll find the answers good enough
Thanks guys,
Just a bit confusing I would post to the author of the rom but at present haven't got enough posts.
Just a further quick questions, what do they mean by swap? and also there are 3 files to download xj, au, and dev, why 3 files and which is the best.
thanks
XJ, AU and DEV are 3 different builds by different authors so you'd need to check them all out
Here's a link to the MIUI-Dev website that you might wanna look at. It's quite quiet but obviously all MIUI
http://www.miui-dev.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?16-HTC-Desire-GSM
So EddyOS, I read somewhere on the modaco forum that you had miui installed at one point, if you had to put one on again which one would you use along with radio and kernel?.
I can see that you have loads of experience and i'll go with your recommendation I appreciate that it is a preference thing i mainly want something quickish, stable and cool looking (xj, au or dev?).
I like the miui because they look like an iphone but have an android feel so to speak so best of both worlds, im no iphone hater but it is over rated but icons look cool.
thanks

Ok, basically I discovered cyanogen 7 about a week ago and was pure ''
well since then I have gone from knowing nothing at all to having a rooted 2.2 (stock rom) GSM desire (A8181 - whatever that actually means), S -ON
I rooted with unrevoked and have clockworkmod 2.something.
now from what i understand I need to S -OFF so that I can use a program (run on the phone from ROM manager) to upgrade clockwork to 3.x then (correct me if i'm wrong, I'm a total noob dont forget xD) I can use ROM manager to download CM7 and instal all on the phone?
is that right? if not could someone please correct me
I've done a NANDroid backup
i think thats all i want to say :')
I get confused when browsing forums because people talk about things, especially abbreviations, that mean nothing to me xD
Thanks for the help guys

not an expert on the S-OFF side of things but ive been flashing various ROMS without ever needing to S-OFF.
Been using LeeDroid and now GingerVillain (and tried a few more along the way).
For info the GingerVillain has CM7 stuff in it and is pretty stable. Once you have flashed GingerVillain once it has its own setup for flashing updates/patches etc.
But you are right to always take a nandroid backup first. the one time i forgot my flash screwed up

That's sound advice because I'm not set on cyanogen however I don't know how I'd go about flashing GingerVillain :')
And how sure are you it's alright with S-ON because I don't like the sound of a £250 paperweight
thanks though
well ive never changed my S status .....
Download ROM Manager from the Market. Make sure you install clockworkmod recovery (using ROM Manager). Backup current ROM (using ROM Manager). Download GingerVillain latest version. Flash ROM from SD card (using ROM Manager)
Any future updates to GingerVillain you can use the 'Villain Setup' utility that you will find in your app list once the Flash is complete.
If its your first ever flash be aware that you should make sure the battery level is high, and that it may take several minutes (so dont panic !)
As long as you backup first everything should be fine (although there is always some risk).
Once you have finished your first Flash it will seem like you were worried about nothing
Oh ... and if you would prefer to stay with Froyo the LeeDroid ROM has a very good A2SD version
that sounds.... easy
thanks
and ROM manager says i already have CwM 2.5.0.7 -- so thats all cool, yeah?
Will my NANDroid backup count or shall I just do it again in ROM manager?
and I'm guessing I can download GV from within ROM manager?
sorry to ask all the newb questions but i'd rather be sure lol
Ive never bothered downloading ROMs from within ROM Manager but I believe you can.
As for the backup Id copy your existing backup to your PC and do another. You can never have too many backups
The backup will be in a sub folder on your SD card in a 'clockworkmod' directory.
oh ... and it generally is easy its just summing up courage for the first one.
Might be worth using titanium backup or my backup pro to take a copy of your apps if you dont want to lose where you have got to on Angry Birds etc
you can then restore them to your new ROM
Thanks
my phone is off to charge quicker at the minute then i'll give it a shot
one last question to be extra annoying
if i can't download GV within ROM man.
..could you provide a download link for me to manually slap in on my SD please
Seriously though, I'm really grateful!
They are all under the Desire Android dev sub forum.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=880465
FINALLY about to do it and I've just thought..
Im on clockwork 2.x
don't i need 3.x for ext4 which makes gingerbread more stable?
also, ROM manager didn't have GV so i downloaded the zip from the link you gave me and extracted it to the root of my SD
rom manager doesnt find the image file, only the 3 folders
..and i feel really stupid :')
[edit 5 mins later]
NOT unzipping it was a better idea, its working now
...my excuse is that im learning
Good thing it worked for you. Some users have reported a host of problems flashing ROMs from ROM Manager. I'd advice you to do it the tried-and-tested old way: through Recovery (which in your case is ClockworkMod).
If you decide to repartition, ROM Manager can do that too, but that's not too advisable either, as some have reported problems with that method, and ROM Manager only allows up to 512Mb partitions, if I remember right.
funny that ^
ROM manager ended up leaving me on the white screen with the green HTC logo untill i pulled the battery
i did it through recovery and it worked a charm
just went through ALL of the settings and i LOVE it
there are a few things i dont like but i'm yet to try different themes etc yet
I'm a happy bunny!
Glad you managed the Flash OK
Never experienced any problems with ROM Manager myself ....
Thing is, now you have recovery and a nadroid backup you are fairly safe. Anything goes wrong you can recover to a previous image from recovery
I always keep a nadroid on my SD card just in case
Of course if you try S-OFF and all sorts of HBOOT changes then you expose yourself to more risk apparently so be careful.
Happy Flashing
oh ... and if you are on GingerVillain go to the Villain Setup and flash the adfree add on. For me it always takes 2 attempts to work, which is strange, but adfree is great
and on GingerVillain you also might want to flash the 'new market' add-on too ...
.... and then there are the Kernels to try too
A week from now you will wonder what you were worried about and will be flashing daily

I'm already wondering it
I though last night (well, 4.20 this morning) that I might bite the bullet and try flashing cyanogen
-which i did with sucess
then downloaded the google add on pack and added that
I felt all happy like
onr of my friends did his hero at the same time too because he was interested when i showed him
I think for now I'll keep cyanogen, but i've left it in note form: no homescreens properly set up, very few apps etc, until i find a ROM that I really like the look of
I'll keep ginger in mind though, especially as i hadn't tried the stuff you mentioned above
Hi there,
Saw the thread and thought i could help you with some information.
S-ON/OFF refers to Signature Verification on or off. S-ON stops things that the phone manufactuer do not want changed. It is totally separate to Root access to android. The main advantage of turning S-OFF is that you can change the size of the partitions on the device to give you more space for you apps. Basically playing around here can be dangerous if you are not aware of what it's actually doing at all times.
The great news is that as you have already discovered, you definately don't need to play with S-OFF to flash ROMs. Just root access and a recovery. The ClockworkMod 2.0.5.7 that comes with the Unrevoked root method should is fine for flashing all ROMs from ROM manager or by booting into recovery. But if any of your ROM instructions call for later versions you can just store the later version zip on your SD and use the older recovery to flash the newer version. It will be usable until your phone re-boots. You can't flash the image of the new recovery without S-OFF
Glad to have you experimenting in the community. I think this sort of stuff is exactly why Android is excellent. Apple hate that people Jailbreak their phones but Google openly encourage this development!
Thanks Jimmy
I flashed GV again (because i'm getting a bit carried away now ;D) and tried to install new market, adfree and a 3d desire bootlogo. I've got debugging and unknown apps enabled but it says there is a problem downloading?
Any idea why?
hmmmm.... not seen that one. Have you tried wifi and 3G ? whats the exact message ?
Did you wipe between flashes ? you dont normally need to do this when flashing updates (eg gingervillain 2.0 to 2.1) but when flashing between different ROMs (eg CM to GV) then you should do a full wipe ....

Great summary! I definitely recommend s-off as I found it as easy as root.
I have close to 300mb free on internal and usually over 200mb free ram.
You can also change the HTC quietly brilliant (should be "loudly" if you ask me!) splash screen after s-off, and write to any of your device partitions, including /system and /data while booted, saving some time using advanced for certain tasks.

Is that just the market message telling you there is a problem downloading?
My best guess is that there is a setting in GV that allows direct install to the SD-ext partition for apps. Do you have an EXT2/3/4 partition on your SD card?
When ROMs talk about A2SD, Data2EXT and Data2SD the EXT partition is required.
have a look at the blog for the Starburst ROM for desire for a great tutorial (can't post an external link in here)
It is for a specific ROM but the process is the same. I would recommend using EXT3 because it is the most compatible with ROMS.
See how you go with that.
I used to flash all my phones in the past...Moment, Epic, friends phones, custom baked a few of my own ROM's using 7zip, etc...but it's been a few years and I feel like I've fallen outta touch. Currently the only thing I've done is CF Auto Root - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1956180 so that I can run TrevE Mod Wifi Tethering - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1999156 and then Hot Audio Mod - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1931970. I know these are minor, but I swear I've fallen outta touch on how to do bigger things, so even trying to flash a new modem and stock ROM via ODIN v1.85 hasn't seemed to help me get rid of root so that I can install 4.3.
At this point, I'm looking for guidance on how to COMPLETELY erase everything on the phone and start it from scratch. I wanna remove anything and everything I may have done w/ the phone over the past year or so and make it brand new as if it came fresh outta the box. I'm assuming I have to do all this from ODIN, but I'm going to be honest here...I'm hoping someone will hold my hand via accurate step-by-step, post links like I have done above, give Flashing for Dummies directions (some of these threads and their OP's are like reading German to me nowadays) and overall help me get to even a stock 4.1.2 so that I can run the 4.3 update either via OTA or ODIN flashing.
I've considered doing custom a custom ROM and Kernal, but this is the first Android I've had in years where I don't feel the need to run custom anything, overclocking, etc. About the ONLY thing I didn't like about CF Auto Root is I couldn't do things like using ROM Toolbox to change the boot screen, using SDX Removal Tool to remove useless stock apps I never used (I'm guessing mostly because it's a Android 2.X app vs using it on a 4.x phone), etc. All in all I've been completely content w/ my 4.1.2 the way it is, I just want a 100% clean slate when running 4.3, reroot to run a WiFi Tethering app, be able to delete stock apps finally and that's really it. So...anyone got 10 min to post some links, write me some instruction and help a brother out

Welcome back! Use TWRP for total wipe. (Including system) Get a stock 4.1.2 ROM from SamMobile and flash it via ODIN. It would be (should be) unrooted and totally out of the box Note 2. Be careful about the ROM u download though. Make sure it's for your carrier. Do a normal OTA, (don't recommend it though, it has Knox), use CF-Auto Root. You'll end up with a tripped Note 2 rooted. (Warranty would be lost.) (Can't reset counter, can't downgrade)

TWRP: http://teamw.in/project/twrp2 (get latest for your phone and flash it via ODIN.)
SamMobile: http://www.sammobile.com/ (can't provided exact download link, you'll have to search for yourself.)
CF-Auto Root: there's a thread on XDA on it, I think it was on the Note 2 Original Android Development forums.
Merry Christmas!
