I'll plan to buy Desire today and have question. Very important for me is quality and sensivity of GSM/UMTS radio. That's why i say goodbye to N97 - it was disaster. Please tell me how good/bad signal reception is in Desire? Thanks.

Hi,
I'm currently using radio version 1.09.23. I've tried 3 other radio, the default, 1.05.*. No matter which radio I'm using the 3G reception is very weak on Three UK network.
Does anyone has any suggestion which radio they use for Three UK? London area.
Thanks
3's signal is usually weak. It's not phone's fault i guess.
my sony ericsson has a far better signal that the HTC and the SE holds the signal
im currently thinking about binning the Touch diamond and using the SE all over again and just use the HTC for my golf gps system bit of a waste tho
The GSM reception is absolutely fine. It's the 3G that is really dissapointing.
Yes, I had the same problem.
So, I bought a E71 from three.
Most of the time on E71 is 3G, sometimes 3.5G(that's HSDPA signal)
HTC supports 3G, but on my HTC phone, I only got HSDPA signal.
I thought the phone receive different 3G frequency.
As Three has weak HSDPA signal, so HTC receive weak signal with three.
So I had a test, I insert a T-mobile sim card.
T-mobile do the HTC diamond, so I thought they should support it .
The signal is very good.
In conclusion, I can only think that's frequency problem.
I've had a Nexus one suffering with weak 3G reception on O2 UK and am wondering if the HTC Desire (a very close cousin), has the same problems ???
I would hate to get a HTC Desire and still have the same 3G problems.
The Issues I had with the Nexus One was the the phone would pickup and try keeping hold of a 3G signal, but it picked it up very weak, a 20-30dBm less than other phones.
Thanks for the information
Ash.
I thought N1's problem was dropping 3G, not weak signal.
Updated from G1 to Desire and I couldn't tell that 3G is weaker or stronger -- seems about the same.
O2 !!
I have an Iphone and the 3G coverage for O2 is just silly compared to T-Mobile , Orange etc. I would say it is more likely the O2 network coverage at fault rather than the phone . Look on the O2 forum thousands of complaints about no Strong 3G signal in London !! on all phone makes .
Moving to T-mobile or Orange as soon as I can
I agree O2 3G is very poor, tried a friends voda sim in my touch HD and speed tested at 4000kbs where my O2 could only manage 900kbs.
To where I live, Ive tested T-Mobile, 3UK, O2 and Vodafone and they all suffer 3G Signal loss for me when using a Nexus One.
Have you tried a different location or a different handset in the same location. It could be you are just in a poor reception area or on the edge of 3G coverage.
The signal issue has nothing to do with n1-desire. T-mobile just sucks. n1 for at&t works fine but my n1 with t-mobile 3g sucks a$$.

The OP means T-Mobile UK not T-Mobile US
It's fine for me on T-Mobile, it drops between HSDPA and 3G A lot though.
Maybe there's a problem with the antenna in your handset?
Ive lived as the same location for 10 years and had good 3G reception with loads of other phones.
Just interested to knowing how other people are getting on with it.
Thats not good then ash, hope you get it sorted some how and the same problem does not exist with the desire.
I think the problem is a combination of things... I live on the South Coast and have a Nexus One on Vodafone, 3G/HSDPA is great.
Google Nexus One had that bug but it was fixed in update and since Desire comes with that update installed you are fine

Sorry I misread your post, I have no 3G issues with T-Mobile on the Desire. So it doesn't seem to have the same bug that the Nexus One did.
Great signal so far - been all over Scotland the past weekend and if I didn't have H it went to 3G and if not then to G - and i was very pleasantly surprised to see that the web worked the whole time - just faster or slower. When my G1 didn't have a good 2G signal I couldn't use facebook or twitter, both were OK on the Desire - just slower to load!
By the sounds of it so far so good. Potentially not a lemming after all !!!!
Hi there,
I would like to know if the sensitivity for GSM signal is better on the Desire, or on the Nexus One.
Do someone have both mobile and could try the app "signal radar" with phones at the same place ?
I live somewhere where the signal is weak, just wonder wich one is the better for me.
Thanks =)
EDIT : I look somewhere that the SAR for the Desire is around 0,752 W/Kg, and around 0,823 W/Kg for the N1,
I don't know if it influance the sensitivity of the gsm signal ...
I don't know what kind of reception has N1 but Desire in GSM is quite good. Much better than Nokia N97, similar to N95. 3G is bigger issue.
guys .I have poor reception with htc onex .
The reception is exactly the same as sensation .
how is your reception ?could you please compare your reception with onex and your previous phone ?
I have a DHD as well as the One X. Both get poor reception in my house, so I have a Vodafone Sure Signal to boost it. But without the SS, I would say that the One X is very similar to the DHD, both vary from "no signal" to 3 bars out of 5. The signal fluctuates so rapidly that it's hard to do decent comparison, even with the phones side by side, but neither goes above 3 bars, and most of the time I have 1.
Worth bearing in mind, though, that the DHD is 18 months old and has had several radio updates in that time. I can't be sure now, but I think reception in the house was worse when I first got it. Hopefully the One X will see radio improvements as well in future firmware updates.
Thanks for reply.so its not only me with poor receptions
Well, I live in a bit of a mobile black spot. There's good signal just up the road, on very slightly higher ground. I've tried sim cards from all the main UK networks and they're all about as bad as each other. So it's not really the phone's fault - my brother's iPhone has the same problems when he's here.
But to answer your original question about comparing this to my old phone, the One X is about the same as my DHD, and I have hopes it may improve as HTC release newer radio software.
I'm lucky that work provided a Sure Signal (femtocell) device to get round the problem, as I'm sometimes on call and need to be reached on my work mobile.
mine is much worse than my DHD on T-Mobile (UK - 1800Mhz)

There is a location at work where I have been with all my previous phones. Every one of them, except the Galaxy Nexus, would lose network coverage when holding the phone normally to type a text or email or such. I couldn't get the Galaxy Nexus to lose coverage at work at all.
But I can't say the same for the SGS2, Sensation, and One X.
I just think the Galaxy Nexus has exceptionally good mobile reception, and everything else is just normal.
My one X has terrible reception compared to my galaxy s2 but has incredible wifi signal, wish it was the other way round.
Unless I'm outside, I always have 1 or 2 bars now where as before I always had full signal.
I hope the upcoming software update fixes this issue.

same here, gsm reception not good.
I think it's as much a case of the indicator does not reflect the reality of the signal strengh correctly.
Often I have no signal bars but can make calls and send and recieve texts without a problem!
good to see the thread that this is a common problem as i have noticed this from day one and when asked here, no one replied and i am so confused if it was my phones problem. hope that this is a software issue. all my other phones recieve full signal in my house but One X alone keeps moving between 1-5 bars

what mobile bands are you guys having problems with? I'm on T-Mobile UK 1800Mhz and reception is a pig.
Its not a indicator problem .with nokia 5800 I have 70% reception in my room but no signal with Onex and I cant make call with onex .
I dont think so updates can solve this problem.I have never seen any update improve reception .
I had this reception problem with my sensation aswell.I tried lots of roms and radio updates .no diffrent
I've used HTC One X and Galaxy Note in the same places. The Galaxy Note would pick up signals where the HTC One X would not. Had similar issues with HTC Vivid. The Galaxy S II was better than the HTC One X or the HTC Vivid but not as good as the Galaxy Note. None of these had the kind of reception I would call good. I can't remember the last time if ever that I had a phone with acceptable reception. I would rather have poor reception than go back to the iPhone. As I remember, the iPhone 4 had really bad reception. It was a defective unit but the replacement worked fine. That's when I moved to the Android. But the fact I can talk on the phone or use the browser are only a couple of the reasons I use a phone so poor reception is not a deal breaker. Also, you have to lay some of the blame on the network.
