Can anyone tell me how to backup my text messages so that I don't lose them when I root?
I am not even seeing a way to copy and paste them into a document or anything. Any Android vets know how I can go about saving them to the SD card, or emailing them somehow, or somehow sync them to the cloud, or even copy them to my computer?
i use smsBackup but it backs messages up to your gmail. theres other apps in the market that can back them up to your sdcard tho
Sweet, thanks man. I found it and used it. Here it is for anyone that needs it in the future:

Which root are you doing because when i did unrevoked i lost nothing.
you can use my backup pro for sms and mms, but it costs money
and there is a free program very goodo one,
SMS backup and restore (by Ritesh Sahu) compact and fast a five star program
I just use google voice so it's all available online.

Yeah, lol. I backed up and then did unrevoked and also lost nothing. Oh well, I'm ready for the time when it will get wiped at least.

Hi All!
I know the Desire has a built in auto backup of some parts of the phone to the SD card, but I want to back up the entire phone, programs, settings etc etc. just like I used to be able to do on my Windows Mobile device! And also, it needs to be off the phone, not on the Sd card. Whats the point of backup onto the SD card if you loose your phone! I don't quite get HTC's logic in having their backup only onto the SD card!
Can anybody help?!
Thanks a billion!
David
Try Mybackup Pro. It backs up to SD (yeah i know lol) AND there is an option to have it back up over the internet...can't remember if it is to their servers or sends to your e-mail address. I use the SD option.

Thanks, I will try it!
Do you guys know if the built-in backup function or MyBackup pro backups Market settings too?
I used to use Astro to backup my apps, but first of all everytime I restore it asks me to restore the apps one by one!!!
And secondly it doesn't backup the market so the restored apps ARE NOT updated via Market.
Only app I know does so is Titanium backup but it needs root access...
Thanks
I've had a look at it, it's not the same as WM backup systems. It wont do a complete backup of everything. Seems that a simple one click backup of everything on Androind just isn't possible!
Not clever.
I wonder what it's like on an iPhone. I would assume that since everything goes through iTunes, the entire phone gets backed up. What with this and a numbr of other glaringly mising but basic functionality from Android, I am begining to see why they are still rather low down in the ratings of smartphone systems.
But then again, I used a blackberry 9700 yesterday, and just couldnt believe that people can type on their keyboard!, And I used to have a WM phone with a keyboard.
My perfect phone would be my HTC Desire with a thin slide out keyboard running Android with all the functionality of Windows Mobile!!!
A Pipe dream!!!

Cant you copy your backup from the Sd card to your computer?
Of course, although it's just an unnecessary step! I am used to connecting my phone to my computer and have everything work by itself! I have to install that program and see if it puts everything in an easily identifiable folder.
Windows Mobile - Very functional - but outdated
Android - Really modern and snazzy - Missing essential business functionality!!
Need some help, hope someone can. Friend had a rooted Evo, wanted to go back to stock so ran the s on program and then flashed the pc36IMG.zip. they never exported their contact to sd card. I tried reflashing unrevoked to no avail. I can pull up the nandroid on computer through usb. Any way to pull the info from there or any ideas how to get unrevoked to work?

He should have his contacts on his google email account. Go online and login in to google and hit contacts, all of his contacts should be there, and if you add your google account to your phone it should sync your contacts, along with his email

The only prob with this is how he added any new contacts to the phone. If they added as phone contact then they will not be in google. If they were saved as a google contact then yes, when they sign back in, through the market for instence, they will auto update. From now on, tell them to always add contact as google contact when given the choice.
Not to hijak the thread but is there an easy way to move phone contacts to google contacts? I've been trying to do that for a while but haven't found the answer.

export phone contacts to SD card. Then run import and you can chose to import from the file on the SD card into your google contacts
Thanks for the info. I did that and was relieved to find that google contacts has a merge duplicates function.
Hi all,
I am having my phone replaced by Orange (GPS and 'no network' issues).
Is there a piece of software that I can use to backup my HTC DHD to PC to include all data. By all data I mean apps, SMS, contacts, etc...?
Or, failing that, if I copy everything from the phone (in disk drive mode) to the PC from my old phone, and then copy it back again, will it all appear as it was?
Thanks in advance.
If you have a rooted phone then a simple nandroid backup will copy the exact state of your phone which can be copied to your pc and restored at a later date.
If not, then then the process becomes a bit more tedious, I'm afraid. Downloading and running the SMS backup + app should cover the text messages. Syncing or backing up contacts will sort out contact details. You can use BookmarkSB to save and restore bookmarks, and syncing the calendar events with you google account will prevent you losing anything.
For other app data, you may have to go into particular apps and back up manually. Even then, I'm not sure how you'll be able to instantly restore things like home page and icon layout.
Good luck.
Oh, and HTC sync may help too.
I used MyPhoneExplorer for that, can backup almost everything. Didn't need root access too
google it up
yup..i used phone explorer........but tell me which type of connection for usb is needed for backing up ????????

It's disk drive, you may find it even faster using WiFi with My Phone Explorer.
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App

U can use Droid Explorer too, but i prefer MPE...
Helo all. So when I make a phone call, lately, 1 in every 4 calls, the person whom I call cannot hear me. This is the same for speakerphone as well. It all started about a week ago. Any help would be great, thank you.

If your phone is STOCK or STOCK rooted and you want a fast and sure fix then
simply copy the contents of your internal sdcard to a new folder on the desktop of
your computer and use a backup app to backup your apps to external sdcard.
If you don't have an external sdcard then copy all files and folders internal sdcard
and copy the backed up apps to a new folder in your computer's desktop.
Then go into the settings>accounts in the phone and perform "factory data reset".
Doing that will solve the audio problem you have been experiencing.
If you are using a custom rom then I would suggest to ODIN flash the stock firmware
but make sure that the firmware is the correct onf for your specific phone's model number.
Best place to get the correct stock firmware is from SamMobile.com.
Good luck!
Hey thank you. Ive never done any restoring before. I just installed Helium on my desktop. Is there any way for me to be 100 percent certain that all my info will save properly? Im scared that I will lose all data trying to do a backup. Also, will doing a system restore fix the keyboard issue I am having? Heres what it does; word suggestions in the top area of keyboard will contain the correct word, but also contains the word before the correct word. Not sure if that makes any sense.

If you go into settings>accounts - and have it backup it will back up all your contacts,
mms, data, and other personal information and send it to your google/gmail account.
Then if and when you need to restore those items you can go into settings> accounts and
click on "Restore Data" after you are sure that you have a good wifi or data connection.
As far as music/videos/documents/photos you will not loose anything either since the
process of flashing a rom does not touch any of those files or folders in your phone.
It's a lot easier to flash a clean stock rom than it is hunting down trying to find a fix for
all these issues you are having with your phone.
When you do backups using apps from the playstore you will have no problem restoring
them after you re-download and install them again from the playstore.
Just be sure that the destination of any backups you make using playstore apps is setup
to be on your external sdcard or copy them to your computers desktop into a new folder.
These backups above are only for games and applications which you installed from the
playstore and has nothing to do with the personal DATA backups using your gmail account.
Good luck!
Don't forget that it takes less time to click the "THANKS" button than it takes to type "thank you"
Hey thank you for the help. Oh, btw, im running stock. I would hit the "like" button, but um, shoot, I cant find it. I know, I must be an idiot. Lol

I'm confused. What method did you use to back the SMSes up? Do you not remember because you tried a lot of programs?
I didn´t used any programm, I was using DHD with 2.3.5 android version, and it had a option export sms to SD card. That is how I did the backup.
I used to have 2.3.5 until a couple of weeks ago and I don't rermember such an option to store messages on the sd. Anyway you could try with .xml extension...
I remember on my old HTC Aries, when I backed up I was able to open and view using notepad++

That's how I used to backup, then it wouldn't read on these android 4+ roms so I used play store apps to backup now.
My suggestion is try the same Rom you backup-ed and see for a restore button in the messaging app. The HTC backup won't work for the 3rd party backups.
