I know this has probably been covered elsewhere, but my (admittedly very brief) search for this in the forum has come up dry.
I'm going on holiday later in the week, and I'm going to hopefully be getting a PAYG sim card so I can use my phone abroad (for web browsing).
I have a feeling though that my phone might need to be unlocked so I can use another carriers sim. It's a TMobile Desire. I'm going to Bali - are there any other issues I need to consider before I go?
Any ideas?
Ok - I've googled this a bit now as well - so it looks like I need to buy a code to unlock it?
No way of doing this by yourself to save a few quid?
If this is the only way, a reliable unlcok code provider would be really useful - there appears to be a few online, but there also seems to be plenty of stories from people who have ordered codes only for them not to work, and or codes not to be supplied by the seller...
I unlocked my T-Mobile Desire last week via HTCSimUnlock.com and my code came within 10 minutes.

Dave

Hi everyone, i come from Hong Kong,
my friend in UK brought me a desire form Virgin, but it is locked by this network!
I want buy an unlock sim code from the web in UK; however, i don't know which company is reliable and reasonable..........can anyone help me......quite urgent
I have just bought a Desire which is branded Virgin Media from Cex in the UK and it is unlocked.
I have tried a three sim in it and it accepts the card and makes calls (called customer services) but I did not try to go on the web with it as I had no credit.
I am informed that it will not go on the web using a three sim, can anyone confirm this?
I have a Virgin 3G sim in at present and it is working well on the web.
i have retracted my statement since it was a error. the first email did not get throught to me. but the second one did after i made a paypal dispute they replied in less than 2hrs and even sent me a personal message via modaco excellent service apart from the technical error.
i do reccomend HTCSIMUNLOCK.com it worked out £13.77ish

How about unlock-htc.com ?
Re unlocking phones.
The easiest, most reliable way to unlock a phone is to contact your service supplier and request an unlock code from them.
I have done this with Orange, T-Mobile and Virgin and it works and is 100% reliable.
DO NOT USE HTCCODE - the guy is a crook.
This is an excellent service though:

I 2nd this, he's a bit hit/miss because some people swear by him but my experience is rubbish, no answer to emails or anything, he doesn't even reply to posts in his own forum
Hi guys, new here, great community. I did search for this, but could not find what I was after..
I have a new HTC Desire S. S-ON unfortunately. I am traveling Asia in 3 weeks and don't want to be using my UK T-mobile SIM whilst abroad. What I do want, is to buy a SIM card over there and use it. So I have to unlock this phone somehow.
Called T-Mobile, they said they will happily do it for 15 pounds, but it takes 28 days for the code to come back from HTC, this is too long for me as I leave in just 21 days.
I read about sieempi's unlock tool which looks amazing, but seems to be suited just for the Desire, not the Desire S. Has anyone had any luck using the tool with the Desire S?
Also, online it appears you can pay for an unlock code, about 30 pounds or so, you send them your IMEI number and network and they generate you an unlock code. Firstly, does this method reliably work? And secondly, if 3rd party websites have access to a method, does anyone else for free?
Warmest regards all, hope for some good responses!
DJS.
You can try to post this in the Desire S sub-forum, to get more responses.
BTW, no idea about your problem.
Try posting in Desire S forum. Anyway I have used a website in getting an unlock code and it worked for me no problem. Cost me £20 ish.

Hmm...maybe a codes the way then?
There might be a website that does it for free but it will take longer about a day or two. I know there is for blackberry not sure about htc. But yea most websites are fine
No idea about free but you will get a code and not have to send off your phone. I couldn't find a free site for the Desire.

Hello, i have googled and searched all the threads but to no avail so decided to post another NooB thread!
I bought My arc from O2 on PAYG knowing full well that it was sim locked to this network. Having previously owned a HD2 i thought i could easily install a Open romm on it and it would cure the sim lock on it.
Upon looking into how to go about this i have seen threads on rooting but am unsure weather i will be able to do this on the 02 ROM that is installed on this. is it just a case of following the root guide then finding a general ROM for uk?
to summarise i just want to take the sim lock of so i can put my virgin sim card in and update to the latest android.
Thanks in advance
What happens when you put your Virgin sim in? O2 phones are usually sim-unlocked anyway, but no, rooting or debranding won't remove the lock.
Thanks for the quick reply
It just asks for a sim network unlock pin to enter.
i know i can request this but was told in the shop that i would have to have the phone for a year with O2 before i could do this. I should have just spent 50 pound more and got it sim free. i really thought that i could have worked a way around this though!
Any ideas?

You'll have to pay, no other way.

Unfortunately, I have found with the Xperia Arc that it was a pain to get it unlocked. For the Orange San Francisco Android phone, someone at Modaco provided a free app that gives you your unlock code when you type in the IEMI number. Easy. On other phones, you often see codes for sale on auction sites, etc.
With the Arc, it seems it isn't anywhere near that easy or quick. In the end I had to get a refund from one online provider because they couldn't get the code (using their cheaper method - and I wasn't willing to pay for their more expensive service). In the end I used cellunlocker.net for a decent price, but it wasn't a pleasant experience from the point of view of not getting any updates on how long it would take (just kept getting told that it would be soon). However, in the end they did email the code and it did work - it just took about 2 weeks
this is what i found out online for you !!
Welcome to O2. Someone will be with you soon.
You're through to Ashton.
Ashton: Hi I'm Ashton. How can I help?
me: hi , i have a pay and go xperia arc and would like it unlocked , how long do i have to have the phone for and how much would it cost ?
Ashton: You've to use the phone on the O2 network for 12 months and then you can get it unlocked for a charge of £15.
pity ur not on contract as they do it straight away for free
Thanks for your replys. I thought it would be just a case of using a workround to install a generic rom and in turn this would take the sim lock off! I may jusy return the phone and buy a sim free version for a bit more. Cheers peeps.
Sent from my LT15i using XDA App
There a guide here detailing how to debrand your Arc.
Hey guys,
hope this is the right subforum for this, and apologise in advance for the lack of capital letters, can't figure out this foreign keyboard!
anyway, im from the uk and I am in the uae, I didn't unlock my phone to use on other networks before I left the uk. I was on three network in the uk. I asked three over a month ago for an unlock code, they eventually sent me one after 3 weeks. I tried it twice and it wouldn't accept the code. now after another 2 weeks they've told me that the phone cant be unlocked as it needs to be done in the uk so it can transmit over their network. is that correct? I don't see how as you have to put a different network sim in to get the unlock pop up. are they talking crap or do I need a new phone now im in uae?
thanks in advance!
According to my experiences, what they are trying to sell you is bull****.
I was in the same situation in The Netherlands, paid a fortune in a shop, but they were able to unlock it by code after a week waiting period.
Ask them for another code, or worst case scenario, go to an independent gsm by yourself and request a code from them.
However, I would not recommend any online 'solution'.
Firstly, I'll say I'm new to XDA so thanks to all those who offer people like me somewhere to turn to. So, a little back-story, I recently got the root itch after my last ATT upgrade and it would seem it couldn't have come at a worse. For I had just recieved my ATT Galaxy s6 Edge Plus two days prior to being introduced to this site. Needless to say, I put too much effort in finding other devices essentially to "play" (root, flash, etc..) then I should. Which brings me to this...I came across this Sprint HTC 10 still with the plastic on it for a price I couldn't refuse. While trying to go about Unlocking the SIM I've encountered two issues: one being I paid to get an unlock code (actually double due to "high level of security") which ends up saying unlocked from network in a pop up but when I reboot with different carrier SIM, it still says SIMlock Enabled. So, Secondly, I figured try my chances calling Sprint even though I didn't have any of the sellers information. Only to find out, according to her, that phones aren't even elligible to be SIM Unlocked unless they have been active with the carrier for atleast 50 days. I would reallly appreciate if someone could shed light on this and let me know, since I bought it out the box and don't have Sprint, did I just buy an expensive paperweight? Also, if anyone could point in the direction of an effective SIM unlock method, it would be appreciated. And lastly, would rooting it make it easier or expand my options of SIM Unlocking? Thanks for any input.
I haven't tried sim-unlocking this phone but I usually get unlock codes from reputable sellers on eBay. If the code you received doesn't work, I would ask for my money back or ask the seller to help me troubleshoot the issue.
The source seemed to be a reputable and were extremely professional, (HTCunlockingservice.com), and said they got the code straight from Sprint server. I just don't understand why the code won't work. Any knowledge of how factual the service reps statement that if it hasnt been active for 50 days, it cant be unlocked?
