On pretty much every phone I've ever previously owned, if I call someone who's in the middle of another call, I get a little beep and a notification displayed on screen saying "Call Waiting" or equivalent. On my HTC Desire, my first Android phone, there is no notification. Is there any way to make it tell me?
Is your Call Waiting (in Call settings) notification ON?
If by that, you mean:
Settings>Call>Additional Settings>Call waiting
then, yes. But that setting is for me recieving another call while I'm already on the phone. What I asked for is a way to be notified if the person I'm calling has me on call waiting.
I'm sorry, it seems I didn't pay enough attention to your original post.
I apologize but I don't know the answer.
Yea I found this pretty annoying also. Would be cool to find an APP on the market that notifies you with a beep or a vibration that another call is coming in
I don't know about you, but I get a beeping notification if someone's calling me while I'm on the phone. Might be done by my provider though. I switched to this provider at the same time as I switched to this phone.
Well I got used to Bluetooth dialing (put BT to ear, push button, say "NAME" and it dials", but unfortunately the Desire and Android 2.1 do not offer it right now
My provider might have something to do with my "no notification" when another call is coming in. Hopefully Froyo 2.2 can be released soon because I think it does offer BT support
there is
I have noticed this bug with the original ROM too. After rooting and installing Pays ROM the beep was ok, loud and clear.
Also on my current ROM (DeFroST 0.6) call waiting work.
(Payed) App from the market: http://www.cyrket.com/p/android/com.droidea.callwaiting/
dboy0911, you made the same mistake ferus initially made. I'm not asking for the notification if someone's calling me. I want the notification if I'm calling someone who's already on another line.
i miss that in android, like my nokia, its defenatly not operator option since the same sim was on my nokia and it did notify me
Yeah, Rabia seems to be the first person getting exactly where I come from with this..

whats the use my friend, still no fix to my knowledge
Galaxy Tab does it so its possible, I actually found out that all Samsung phones even windows ones will actually display call waiting msg if ur calling someone who's is on a call currently, I actually might go for galaxy my self unless someone try a Samsung Android on HTC
It is very important to display call waiting msg. Why HTC does not support this basic feature.
I just checked and there's an option for "Vibrate on call waiting" in CM7. Don't know if thats AOSP or CM specific though.
It's not in the AOSP.. Or at least not as of FroYo, which is what the HTC Desire officially has as the latest. I know this because my colleague has a Nexus One and it doesn't have that option either.
I see. A good excuse to start rooting and loading CM then :]

Sorry, but that's not reason enough for me to change my ROM. I'm very happy with Sense UI. Though I would like to try CM tbh.. Still not gonna try it though.

Having an issue with the HTC Desire relative to the 'call waiting' beep tone. I have had two devices on both ATT and T-Mobile in the US and when on a call and another call is received, there is no beep tone. Just some static for 3-4 seconds.
I have been able to reproduce this on both the Telstra & Euro version. In another forum someone posted they did get a beep tone, but that is the only other basis for comparison I have.
If any else using a HTC Desire in the US can verify for me, I would appreciate it.
Many thanks,
same problem in Romania
I have an unlocked HTC Desire which I use with Vodafone.
Call waiting activated, second call is received and displayed on screen, no beep tone.
To fix the issue I have bought an app from the market: androlib.com => CALL WAITING CONFIGURATIONS (I'm not allowed to post links) .
After rooting the device and installing Pays-ROM Desire with Sense v1.4 (RockSolid) I found you that the application wasn't necessary, the root or the new ROM fixed the problem.

Hi in the UK with a SIM free Desire on Vodafone, call waiting works perfectly for me. Beeps and displays it on screen.

Thank you. That is what I searched on, but apparently it is no longer in the Market (in the US).
Hi guys, I have a strange problem.
Sometimes when I try to call someone, the phone cuts off the connection right before it should vibrate to signal that the phone was answered. This means I can hear the other side picking the phone up, but I hear like "H" (sharp, short) when they try to say "hello". No matter whether I have phone by my ear or laying on the table, sometimes it cuts off, other times it doesn't. When I make the call again, it works.
This started to happening to me since I've updated my sw version to 1.21, when it was 1.15, it worked like a charm. For the last 4 days I tried to make 3 calls, every one of them was cut out and worked on the second try.
Anyone has the same problem/knows the solution?
Thank you very much, It's annoying as hell since every call costs me twice
EDIT: I'm using stock ROM, updated with OTA, no root

Sorry for my English, I'm Czech.
Really? No one?
desire drops calls after a few seconds
Hi!
I've the same problem, since today - very annoying. All start with a call from a friend and after I said "hello" the call ends, but network connection was fine (4 bars). After that I tried to call him back 10 times, every time the same thing - call drops after 1-3 seconds.
A Reboot solved the problem for one time, next call same issue. Tried my sim in the HTC Wildfire of my colleague - same network, everything is fine.
Now I started to uninstall all Taskkiller and other apps i recently added - no change. After 30 min try and error I realised that if I turn of the "Mobile Internet" and therefore the 3g connection, it works better.
anyone have a clue what this could cause?
Joint the club.... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=712030
Mine does exactly the same thing... first of all I thought it was the phone... returned it... new phone, different sim.... same problem.
Geeba have you tried to turn off "mobile internet"?
After my problems yesterday I turned it off and since that no call was dropped!!
Maybe its some sort of concurrent use of 3g Network and the data threads kill the call ... actually I'm no expert in Mobile Networks.
I'm looking forward to Froyo and hope to get rid of the probs.
Minos - yes I have turned off the 3g - but I then have internet connection problems... pretty pointless having a smart phone that has no internet access..
But yes it does help... the Desire I think should be able to monitor the two signals and switch between them accordingly .... but it doesn't. my Mrs has the Hero... it doesn't suffer this problem so personally I think its a problem with the desire.... I'm going to wait till Froyo then if its no better there will be a nice unbranded black Desire gracing ebay!
had the same issue for a few days then i uninstalled juice defender and i havnt had a single dropped call after
I have had the same issue. And then I have read somewhere here what to do.
You must first enter the phone's debug menu: *#*#4636#*#*
Then Choose "Phone Info", scroll down to" Set preferred network type" and set this to GSM auto (PRL). For me it solved all the call drop problem. As you are on different network maybe some other setting will work for you but it might worth to take a try with it.
I am not exactly sure what this sets. One thing is sure I still have 3G and HSUPA connection - and all type of connection works like charm. So nothing changed just no more call drops since then.
benoke: Thanks for your idea, actually my Desire is now beying hospitalized as it had dust under the screen, anyway I reported dropping calls as an issue too while returning in warranty so we'll see what happens
i sent a support question to htc and got that answer:
"Thank you for contacting HTC. In regards to your question, I can help you with that. It does indeed sound like a hardware fault, I would be grateful if you would call our tech-suooprt team and let our agents arrange the return / repair of this device for you. If you could just call 0845 890 0079, we can arrange the collection. I trust that this resolves your query. Please do not hesitate to contact us again if required."
But I don't think its an HW issue.
@benoke: the GSM auto setting worked - four 1h now.
Minos: it is good to hear that it might work for you too. I have recommended it to some of my friends and they all say it works for them.. so it really seems like solution...
Try the new version 5.09x radio in the android development in desire forum to see if that miight help

Haven't found a way to solve this issue yet. They told me at the service station that this is unrepairable issue occuring only with some SIM cards and that they would give me a refund.
I'm buying HTC Desire HD when it is available...
Bluetooth Voice Dialing is in the Froyo feature set.
I can't see this feature anywhere on the Desire after the 2.2 update. Anyone else?
I can't find it either...
really really annoyed about this!! when i bought the phone it was something I really needed! Was told it would be on the phone with 2.2 in a couple of months but now nothing!!! Grrrr!!!
I read somewhere that you can use the voice search do dial someone, and it actually works, but there are two problems:
1) Since the main objective of voice search is to search using google, you need to be on wireless or 3G to start using voice search, even if you don't want to use google at all. So if you don't leave your 3G active all the time, you'll have to activate it before launching voice search.
2) You can't launch voice search by pressing the action button on the bluetooth headset, so you still have to pull the phone out of the pocket to activate it and then give the command.
Those two problems pretty much makes voice search unusable as a replacement to a dedicated voice dialing dialog, because you always have to take the phone out of pocket and interact a lot with it to finally call someone. It's easier to just tap your contact's shortcut to call it.
It was in the leaked ROM that was floating around a couple of weeks ago too! My guess this will be coming in another update around the time that HTC release their car dock. Bloody gits.
in the prerelease 2.2 (LeeDroid) I am using if I press the talk button on the steering wheel it requests a voice command and then searches for whoever you said "call". But it its true that 3G MUST be activated.
Can anyone recommend a 2.2 ROM with HTC sense that has this feature? Is it a good idea for me to reflash do you think?
This was the one thing i was waiting for with the froyo release and it appears to be missing.
Im not seriously considering rooting my phone just to get this feature.
Can anybody recommend me a rom with this feature enabled?
I'm in the same boat, wasn't really bothered about rooting but now it looks like I'm going to have to!
I've emailed HTC on their support page, does anyone think I'm going to get a response?

HTC replied to me saying "we can decide what parts of the system are used and which are not".
Removing this from the release is ridiculous. It's so common now for use of hands-free kits to be compulsory, if not the only legal option.
It was my main reason to debrand and upgrade, only to find that it's been omitted.
Maybe some kind soul can manage to knock up an APK from a release where it was included (fingers crossed)
Well here's the response from HTC!
Not good really!
Hi Dave, Voice to text is only available in North America due to the limitations of the voice recognition software database that our phone uses. We are researching the possibility of expanding the coverage of the Voice-To-Text feature but we are still analyzing
the feasibility and currently have no schedule to relay this to you now. We have your contact information on our system and will contact you when we have a solution. Kind regards, Tom HTC

Don't tell me that HTC is not going to include this feature in Froyo! I bought my desire AFTER the announcement of Bluetooth voice dialing, and I thought I could wait for this to come in 2.2 update, and now they say they won't include it???? Are they crazy enough to omit one of the main features in Froyo??? What on earth are they thinking?!?!
Correct - they are NOT going to include it in Froyo 2.2
I have the official HTC version of Froyo that doesn't have it, and am rather upset as i would have rooted my phone to get this feature, but I was under the impression I didn't have to.
Now that I've updated to HTC's version not only do I still not have Bluetooth voice dialing, but I also don't have the option to root my phone anymore to get it.
Nice to see that they spent time on real things like a new android graphic, the way the lock displays and other useless but blingy stuff instead of items that were lacking that almost every other phone on the market has for granted.

If voice to text doesn't work, how does Google Voice search operate?
This is complete arse.
I thought that in the announcement Google said they were expanding it to work with different accents and languages?

I tried it a few days ago and thought it was terrible.
I've tried it and seems to work well, I've emailed the dev as well about the last comment but he said it uses the in built speech to text library so it will be as good / bad as any other android dialer
Hope that helps!

well you have to give a little more information then that for a definite answer. But the answer is yes AND no right now
If you are running the latest build of android for our phone with the sound working searching via speaking WILL work if you activate the mic first. This is done by making a phone call and then immediately after using the search feature and speaking. Once you do this once the mic shuts off again though. I have no doubt that till will be working in the next little while fully though now that we have sound finally.
See here --------> [Bug] Voice Search Fails Unless Mic is Already Active
yes i have latest build thanks
i have one more question i have advance task killer and when i close all apps and go again look at if all apps are closed some of them still there...
Sorry if concidered spam did search recent threads and no results.
Iv missed a very important call tonight from my work, the call went straight to my answer phone and was only notified with a message saying about new answer phone message, the phone did not ring! This has only happened this once to my knowledge but the significance of the call is huge as I'm on call to attend alarm activations etc over x mas. My phone is at full volume for all notification.
Im on Orange and live in the UK and on Android revolution rom (4.0.2) stock kernal. Maybe the networks are busy as its x mas here I don't know, at the time I of the not getting this call I was playing gta 3 if that makes any odds and no I did not dis miss the call by accident as I would've definately noticed the call on screen not the game. I had wifi and data on at the time.
Now iv changed to 2g network only and to auto change networks as the phone wants to, although I already live in high signal area.
Would be interested to hear comments, advice or if this has happened to others.
Many thanks and happy x mas xda'ers

Hi Guys,
I'm having a similar problem...
I'm missing/not receiving many calls or text messages and am only alerted to the fact when a contact messages me through Whatsapp to ask why I'm not responding.
Quite often (a few times each day) my signal bar looks like this...
The only way signal returns is if I switch the phone off and then back on, which is a tedious process after having encrypted the phone which takes a couple minutes to get it back 'on'
I previously used a micro-sim (ex iPhone 4 user) and an adapter, the network (o2) suggested that I use a new sim (full size), which they sent to me. This hasn’t cured the problem however.
Is my phone faulty?
