Questions about powering off EVO - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a couple questions about the EVO regarding the power button.
1. After hitting the power button on the top to turn the phone on and you want to wake it up from sleep, can you hit one of the buttons on the front to access the lock screen or can you only get to the lock screen with the power button?
2a. How does the EVO turn off? I'm assuming hold down the power button until you get the power off option, but can you achieve the same with one of the buttons on the front?
2b. If answer to 2a is No..... Has anyone seen an app that powers off your phone? Quickboot has reboot/recovery but no power off.
I ask because I have limited mobility with my fingers and using my current Hero has been simple with all operations using the front buttons. My last phone was an Instinct and the top power button was difficult.
Thanks for the help, would really like the EVO but the power button is my only concern.

I would imagine you just hold the power on the front and the power off/sound off/vibrate on/, all those options should pop up and you just touch power off. Again Im just thinking thats how it should be I do not have my Evo yet( DAMMIT!!!) Lol

You have to push the button on the top. The front buttons are touch sensitive buttons that aren't active unless the phone is awake.

Really? The menu button on the front doesn't wake it up like on the Hero? That sucks.

Thanks, didn't know this came out today. Manual confirms the responses, unfortunately.
Maybe the menu button on my Hero waking it up is a Fresh ROM feature?

Nope, check the Hero documentation. That is a feature of that phone.
The Hero has buttons, the Evo does not (other than volume and power)

yeh...remember the "buttons" on the EVO are essentially a branch of the capacitive screen. those being active even when powered off would prevent the phone from sleep, and you would by extension be able to wake the device up by merely tapping the screen. definite no bueno

I actually like the idea of this. It makes the phone nigh-on impossible to turn on mistakenly when it's in your pants. My brother has a Hero, and he always finds that it's been on for an hour or so after he takes it out of his pockets.

If it's in your pants shouldn't it already be turned on

Double tap screen to wake device up?

Would it be possible to configure our Rhodiums to wake from sleep mode upon a quick double tap on the screen? If possible it could be set that only a double tap (one tap followed by another no longer than half a second later for example) would wake the device to ensure accidental knocks in our pocket wouldn't wake it.
Any ideas?
Thanks
anyone any ideas?
I'm going to go out on a limb and say this isn't possible without seriously jeapordizing battery life, so it wouldn't be something plausible.
Consider that what you're asking means your device will always have to monitor the screen and thus never enter standby mode.
Perhaps you should look into applying the registry fix that will wake your device on any key press (not just the power button). Maybe that will work for you as well, while still letting your device go into standby.
What is wrong with the built-in power button again?
I would like that also (different button to turn on). With the diamond the centre round button would be a better button to turn on the pda than the current power button (which is a little too far recessed for my liking) The centre button is larger but recessed also which would stop accidently turning in on in your pocket.

yeah thats a fair point, ddn't think too much about the implications of it having to perhaps always be awake!

Nothing wrong with the power button, just thought itd be a cool feature to be able to do that, but ill stick with whats best!
I think HTC's placement of the power button is perfect. I've been using smartphones and PDAs for a while and that's just the natural spot I EXPECT a power button to be. In fact with my breif stay with a Blackjack II I kept hitting the power button to dim the screen, which on that phone would actually turn it off, like off off.
And as stated above, when your phone goes into standby, the screen turns off, it can't detect anything. In order to keep the sensor on, you would be draining power when your phone really shouldn't.
I'll throw my coin in the hat of "silly idea"
My first Tilt 2, which had a dud microphone, the power button was fine.. It was recessed but easily pressed. My current Tilt 2 I have to press holding the phone longwise.. if I'm holding the phone on the sides I can't press the power button... I'm thinking the screen moves slightly more or the button is more recessed. It's kind of annoying.
Personally I'd also like not have to use the power button all the time myself, although I wouldn't want to tap to do it.. One of the four hardware buttons would be just fine.
Yes, I know sliding and removing the stlyus turn it on too, neither thing I do often.

Switch on screen

Well when you want to use the phone you have to press the power button first right? Then slide to unlock.
Is it possible to remap the button to switch screen on from the power button to say...clicking the trackpad? A native way or an app i don't mind. Just seems strange to reach to the top of the phone and i have pretty big hands, it's no problem just me being me i guess.
Download keyguard disabler, then you will be able to turn on the screen with any of the bottom buttons.
Though pressing trackpad seems best as others invoke some kind of action.

Oh that's a shame! Yeah i think any key would cause me to make mistaks while it is in my pocket that's why i would like the trackpad.
I'll live in hope!
Well it was recommended an app called flyscreen but that turned out to be a full lock screen replacement. Not really what I want!
I don't want to give up on this it's my only gripe lol. Anyone any ideas? Or help? Nothing from the Nexus One?
We may have to wait till it's rooted before we get this feature
How about just locking the screen rather than turn it off?

If Paul from Modaco gets his Desire it could be rooted very soon. Let's hope so and i want this feature first lol.

wake screen using any of four touch buttons?

for a big phone isnt it a pain to have to press the top button to wake the damn screen? same thing happened to the nexus one ( has hack that wakes with trackball ) , incredible as well.
I would love this as well...hate hiting the power button...
Yea if someone makes an app that does this they should make the home button unlock it too
Yes, please that would be great. I hate having to use the power button to unlock.
Yea it would be nice if you could hit the home and search button at the same time to turn the screen on
Get the "No lock" app from market. Put the widget on your screen, choose unlocked. Now your phone will wake with the volume rocker. I keep the widget so I can lock it again when working (walking around all day).
yeah but I want to either tap the screen or a capacitive button to wake the phone. The mechanical buttons just feel like junk to me. I would like ot never even have to touch one of the mechanical buttons...
I'm with most of you, coming from my iPhone and having my Evo sit on my desk, I like pressed down on the face, so my phone doesnt move. Power buttons too hard to just tap.
Unfortunately, in order to wake the phone with a soft-key, the capacitive screen would have to be active, which means your phone would already be awake, thereby defeating the purpose of programming such a thing. Paradoxical.
Think along the same lines as a TV that you change the channel in order to turn it on... it'd have to already be on to change the channel in the first place.
Makes sense, I was just hopping for button on the front. I'll just need to adjust.
i wudnt mind having one of my vol buttons as a "wake" button... n then wen the screen comes back on it goes back to its default use as a volume key. this power button kills my shiznet >=|
I think I could get used to having to use the power button, altho I'm gonna side with most of you, being able to wake it from the volume rocker just seems more natural. Maybe once I switch cases the power button will be easier to press...
The power button hump on this silicon skin from Sprint isn't prominent enough, it actually makes it slightly harder to press imo. The hump doesn't protrude out very much and it's right on a mold or manufacturing edge on the skin which doesn't make it any easier to find.
Hoping the Amzer Luxe skin I ordered is better in this regard...
There is a app called menu unlock from team douche. It's available on the market [donate] or on xda for free. You'll need root for it but what it does is get rid of the swipe to unlock the screen. You'll still need to wake with the power button though. I'm trying to see if we can learn from the trackball wake on the nexus to port it to use the volume down button. With this the combo is press volume down then press the menu key and your going vs. swiping or the power button.
"No Lock" app in the market removes the lockscreen and wakes the phone with the volume keys. It was already mentioned in this thread but everyone seems to have ignored it.

how to wake up phone from standby?

This might be a dumb question, but, on the G2, how do you wake the phone up from standby without actually opening the keyboard?
With the G1, all I had to do was press the Menu button, but that doesnt work on the G2. So far, the only way to wake up the G2 is by flipping the keyboard open, or hitting the power switch.
I don't own the phone but played with one in store yesterday. There is a power button on the top of the phone, this brings it out of standby. I kind of hoped a push of the trackpad would also but it does not.
It really bothers me coming from the Nexus that they swaped sides of the headphone jack and power/sleep button. On most all of HTC's other phones the pow/sleep button is on the top left, perfect for my (smallish) right hand pointer finger. Now that they swapped it to the top right, my world is falling apart...

Hahaha, yeah I'm having the same problem!
I'm so accustomed to having the power button on the left that this phone is completely throwing me off!
Yup... as far as I know, tapping the power button on top will bring it out of standby.
Frustrating not being able to wake it up any other way than the power button or open it up....I want to be able to push the trackpad...anyone figure this one out yet?

this.
and I wouldn't recommend rooting/custom roms just to change how the phone wakes up. not worth it if that's your biggest complaint with the phone.
it's like modding a car... you won't be able to stop until it explodes.

Install NoLock. When you'll turn it on Unlocked, you'll be able to wake your phone with the trackpad, the volume or the camera buttons

[solved] turn on the screen from black

Hi there guys,
i want to ask u if u know a way to remap physical key on galaxy nexus or another way to turn on from "standby" the cell without always pressing the power button...
i can think that fast it will be insible to touch after long use or continuisly press
thanks for your answer and tips about it
I'm not entirely sure what your asking. There are only 3 physical keys on the device and one of them needs to be used as the power button. If you mean turning the screen on by pressing the screen, this wouldn't make much sense as the screen needs to be on to detect touch.
only 2 physical keys...
1)power on/off button
2)volume
when the screen is black i can turn it on only by pressing the power button, i'm looking for another way to turn the screen on, ex. shacking the phone, pressing the screen, pressing volume key or etc...
The volume consists of 2 physical buttons...
All sensors are off by default when the screen is off. Turning these on would drain your battery dramatically.
If you were to change your power on button to one of your volume keys, what would be the point? You'd just lose the ability to change your volume easily and have a useless power button.
remap the volume key was just an example...
the matter is: is there any other way to turn on the screen without press the power button? with the constantly and massive use of it, it will become fragile and easy to break out.
i use volume up/down and power on /off randomly, all are enabled to wake up the device on aokp milestone 4. i think they may have designed the buttons to survive for quite some time since there is only 1 regular button for the job. other buttons on other phones dont just die and break out do they?
edit: by enabled i meant it is possible to select them as usable. stock doesnt have it afaik (didnt have stock long enough to find out)

no, its an option in the Rom Controls under the lockscreen options menu.
Glados kernel has a touch wake option. You can set it for any length of time after the screen goes off. This will also prevent your phone from going into deep sleep so it can affect your battery.

yes and this is the problem, my experience with other phones with "one function key" usually they break out "easily"
ok so from what u all wrote guys my only option is to root the phone and install a new rom with that "touch screen option"
can u indicate to me better where i can find the roms you are talking about? i'll appreciate it a lot
AOKP found in the development section

Thank u all guys i can say this question is solved !!!
