Hej!
Have updated my Desire's firmware to 1.21.405.2 as soon as I saw it was available as OTA, after verifying it in the HTC's official website as well. I had not my analog homescreen clock, nor the calendar widget on my desktop (both HTC original widgets and my device is not rooted) after the upgrade. Tried to bring them as usual, but they are no longer available in the widgets stock (?) Even no possibility to download via "more HTC widgets" (!)
:-( Please help.. I want to get these widgets back soonest possible! )
Now tey are back. After shut down and start again they were available in the widgets as they were as before, just had to place them again. But redtart took 15 mins, this is another known issue being investigated under separate thread.
As to what has changed with this upgrade; have no any clue about that, seen no change for now.

Sorry to hijack but it seems your issue is resolved?
Is there any reason not to accept this OTA update to 1.21?
I'm running an Orange branded handset with a flashed generic 1.15 ROM
Do I need to worry about upgrading the bootloader etc?
The new firmware upgrade updates bootloader too (as read in another thread) personally have no any clue what advantages or disadvantages it brings. My suggestion is just search and try to find more info reg that in the forum. As to changes after this upgrade, can say only some bug fixes; which are mainly htc widgets and fm radio, also youtube app, rest are not visible to user. My Desire branded to 3 Sweden and not rooted/flashed nor debranded and now, after this upgrade, no issues with my phone, except shutdown time (there is a separate thread on it, raised by another member)

Just for clarification, shutdown issue is not something came with this upgrade, that was already an issue before; presumably any of the apps installed cause the matter.

hmm, hasn't come through to me yet. i'm still on 1.15.110.11 and no update available.

Hi
I have just been playing trying to find out if it's possible to replace certain elements of the Android OS with ones from other providers to improve certain aspects.
My main reason for doing this is that my Hero (latest Orange UK 1.5 ROM) has the HTC People Widget which only has the 1x3 option. I'm led to believe that the T-Mobile G2 has a version of the widget that offers other settings (i.e. 3x3).
So the main question is, is it possible to rip the APK from one phone and install it on another?
What I've tried so far leads me to believe the answer is "no".
I've been provided with the apk from a T-Mobile G2
I have a rooted Hero so have booted to the recovery console, deleted the version from my phone (htccontactwidgets.apk and htccontactwidgets.odex) and replaced it with the apk file provided (renamed to htccontactwidgets.apk) then rebooted. Got nothing on this attempt.
My second attempt I used the new apk with the old odex file, this time the widget returned but was still the 1x3 version from my ROM.
Has anybody successfully replaced the 1x3 widget with the improved one from the G2 ROM?

I don't really want to flash the whole phone, I'm happy with it now, i'd just like the enhanced People widget.
I'm guessing it will be standard in the official 2.x ROM.
Your missing out then
modaco 3.1 is exactly the same as the stock HTC rom only about 10x faster. I don't even find it lagging on the keyboard even on the phone keypad. You will have a much more pleasurable experience on modaco 3.1 plus you will have the 3x3 people widget

u can install the latest one
yea just get a new generic rom, and install it.
Oh ok, so there is a newer "generic" ROM than the one on my Orange-branded hero? Cool, will check that out.
yea, i had the orange branded as well, and i put the newer generic one, it has the 3x3 widget
I've just taken the plunge and installed v3.1 of MCR, glad I did
See i told you that you'd be impressed!

hehehe. welcome to the flashing addiction!!!!
I have been on the XDA and Modaco scene for a very long time as a viewer and have partaken in flashing custom ROMs several times before but I always have the feeling at the bottom of my gut that if things go wrong I'll be devastated. The Hero is quite simply the best phone I've ever owned (I said my N95 as good and was reluctant to upgrade from that until I found the Hero) which is why I didn't want to knacker it up, but the benefits far outweigh the risks as far as Paul's ROMs are concerned.
I've read with interest people saying that the MCR 3.1 ROM is draining their battery, and I too thought this but then noticed in the "Spare Parts" app that an app I'd installed (ShootMe) was taking up a lot of processor time sat in the background, so the next charge should prove it's normally 3rd party apps that drink battery power
On a final note, just have to say I absolutely love the Dropbear SSH server, makes it so much easier to tinker with the phone being able to SSH from a desktop.
I cant say I have had problems with the battery. If anything I'm finding mine is lasting a lot longer than it used to. Charged my hero 3 days ago and its still green now. This is with using wi-fi every now and again. Auto updating rss, e-mails etc and I text a lot. Now this I find unbelievable but its true I have the stock HTC battery too. On the stock HTC F/W I was re-charging every night.

3 days??????with data connection 24/24??? how do you manage that? i only manage 18 hours with mine. of course with data connection always on, calls, im's, mails
The data connection isn't always on. Wifi is on most of the time, but that gets turned off automatically for a while. But y/day 3G was on all day and it still didn't drain much battery.
HTC Desire software updated statementSam Mostyn - UK Comms10/08/2010
Weve listened to feedback from customers on a number of points around the recent 360 Android 2.1 update and made some changes to the roll out plan.
The Android 2.2 update for Vodafone HTC Desire users will be based on the HTC open market version of the software and we will customise it to ensure our network settings are installed. For customers who have downloaded the recent 360 update for Android 2.1, we can confirm that the Android 2.2 update will remove the 360 applications and will leave the homepage and bookmarks on your current settings.Customers who want to access the 360 services will be able to do so once the Android 2.2 compatible version is available and, in the meantime, can now download apps like 360 People from the Android Marketplace. We plan to make the 360 apps available in a separate update for the HTC Desire at a later date, giving customers the choice to download it.
We will let you know when the date for delivery of the Android 2.2 update is finalised and subject to testing,we expect this to be in 7-10 days time
Apologies if the format is weird but I just copied and pasted

Sounds like complaining actually did the job! I did not think Vodafone would budge on that.

I amn't on Vodafone UK but this is good news. Installing bloatware before you get your phone is bad but ok. Installing it AFTER you get your phone and releasing it at the same time a major System update was expected so as to get as many people downloading it as possible was a bad move.
great news i think..accept when i downloaded it i went out of my way to flash the rom and get different roms installed.. now how do i go back to what it was like before lol
Well done to everyone that complained i know i did
It does say towards the end that they are going to make another update after 2.2 that has the 360 junk in it so we can choose if we want it or not... im a little confused
so the 2.2 update will clear the voda branding... then shortly after there will another update "2.2 update 1" or something like that, that will put the branding back on?
Whats the point in that, it said we'll have the choice to download it or not, but if we dont and eventually 2.3 comes out will that bypass the 2.2.1 branding update?.
because i asume having an update that you dont install, it will keep showing up eveytime i check for a software update & i'll reject it
so when 2.3 comes out it will still be there as i wouldnt have installed it
so eventually we're going to have to install it to get past it to future updates.
Or have i misunderstood the whole thing?

Vodafone are a money making machine, one way or another they will look to put added 'value' onto all their handsets, they will just change their T&C's for new android handsets allowing branded apps etc. in future.
You can also bet that they will not be spending much time releasing updates if they are not seeing any financial return from them. Don't be surprised if the 2.2.bloat release is the last you see for the Desire.
Personally I've just jumped off the Vodafone wagon (well, for software updates anyway), they tell you anything to get you to commit to a contract, my salesperson categorically stated that OTA updates will be directly from HTC and not have any Vodafone intervention - silly me for believing that!
Now I'm happily flashing ROMS after Unrevoked and love my Desire again, only wish I had done it sooner! Gingerbread is on my Christmas wish list
Its been 10 days now anyone know/heard anything?

Orange HTC Desire Froyo Update??
C'mon Orange! At least let us know what timelines we're talking about here. If Vodafone can sort it out, why are you leaving us hanging!!?? Also - please follow Vodafone's lead and not include all your bundled 'Crapware'!! Its annoying and pointless.
whoop whoop! even this doesn't give me back the time I wasted on debranding and rooting! well, still waiting for this!
OTA froyo installed from Vodafone
Posting this using my PC WiFi tethered to my HTC Desire
The 360 update icon hasn't disappeared - though the splash screen seemed not to be the Vodafone one anymore - will need to do some further tests.
What else should I look for to show if the bloatware is gone or not?
Cheers
Just updated mine now need to test it!

I'm a quite new user to smartphones I've got a desire but just want some general advice on how to have it setup what apps are a must have and also recently got that stupid Vodafone update.
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
Regarding the Vodafone update, hopefully they'll have the FroYo release out soon for you branded guys. As for apps, it depends what you want of your phone. For me, I only use it for the odd email and FB/Twitter so I don't need a lot...others think it's a desktop replacement so need every app under the sun!
Just try what other people are using and see if you like those apps too:

Ok so update went well...so I think. Had to reinstall Swype due to it not functioning. My current issue is using Friendstream or attempting to add twitter by using the Accounts & Sync gives a login and invalid account error. I'm not typing anything wrong because I have it set to show password, and can login through web /sesmic app / twitter app with no issues. This is simply some type of functionality issue so I'm curious if anyone has suggestions before I do rollback to stock .
So question is again...anyone else having friendstream /Acct & Sync adding of twitter acct using Twitter by Htc sense. Been trying for over 5 hours to get it to work before posting this thread. Would hate to lose Froyo over this, but it happens right. Sigh, thanks for reading this an any help you can provide is greatly appreciated.
I am having the same issue and I have been running froyo roms for months with no issues and all of a sudden I couldn't log on today with any Rom
incredible with Virtuous 2.0 and kings 3
The Sense widgets that touch twitter aren't compatible with Twitter's OAuth based logon implemented Sept 1.
Friendstream and Twitter for HTC Sense are definitely broken, and I believe Peep is as well, though I've not used that one. Twitter repeatedly announced the upcoming change starting December '09). One user at HTC.com forums pasted a support reply from HTC indicating that HTC's stance is that Twitter must change their logon system, but I think that is a case of the tail wagging the dog (imo).
Either way, the workaround is to use a client or widget that has been updated to support the change. Most of them have been updated already. Except HTC's own.
HTC and Twitter have both said a fix is in the works and should be implemented soon. HTC made it sound like any minute now, while Twitter was a little more hesitant.

I hadn't read that. I'll look for it though. What I did read was:
<snip> However, HTC has no control over this issue. Twitter will need to release an update for the application or create a new application with the correct settings. <snip>

Having some other random issues, so does anyone know of a guide for simply way to get back my phone back to stock 2.1? I see a few post saying I need to root and download these roms and sadly I don't feel comfortable with that. Just hearing people who took the update.zip route might be screwed for future OTA updates, and dealing with phone isues to verizon if you didn't get the actual OTA update.
Thanks again for the great responses and letting me know I'm not crazy and it's a known issue with new twitter security features for oauth.

This would be great, especially if it can be done without losing settings and apps, like how easy it was to upgrade to the leaked froyo.
Anyone tried it yet?
Saw there's lots of APK's out there already to install it - tried it on unrooted, latest unbranded firmware and working ok - looks different, but seems to be fairly similar...
http://www.google.co.uk/search?sour...roid+market+2.2.6&btnG=Google+Search&aq=f&oq=
I think most of the update though is for behind-the-scenes stuff - like the refund timer of 15 mins rather than 24 hr, apk size limit increased etc.
Out of interest, does anyone know how this would get rolled out normally? Does the market update itself? as you can't search for it in the market...
AFAIK, it only works on Froyo for now.
Yep....only for devices running 2.2......if only i did'nt have CyanogenMod i would have installed it.......hmmmm seems it has only a 15 minute refund window

CyanogenMod is 2.2 (well 2.2.1, but I thought it would work on that too?).
Yes I tried. It works on my desire very well. Smoothly. Give us some beautiful weight.

I read the google blog thing that it was designed and will be rolled out for all devices 1.6+
Not too sure about the big green banner along the top- looks like a bit of a waste of space to me... also I thought there were new categories for widgets and live wallpapers?
Got it on my Desire and it works great for me. I think its a great improvement. Running a stock WWE ROM here. There's more info and download links here http://www.eurodroid.com/2010/12/new-android-market-includes-support-for-tablet-displays/

Banner is great IMHO for the starting page but not on each app page. Wasted large banner space at the top and in large areas, fonts and padding dedicated for your review/similar sections (poor screen estate efficiency). They should shrink that all down, especially the font. Smoother UI and better in some respects but I preferred tabs much more (for sections I rarely use) as well as the fact that I can't manually stop/restart installs on this version anymore, like I was forced to do with previous versions due to recurring buggy market installs that get stuck.
