Hey future Evo owners. A lof of talk has been going around to say that the phone is not worth it unless you live in a 4G area, so I was curious if you guys live in a 4G area now, in an area that will soon be 4G (like NYC and LA this summer), or in a 3G area. I could not find how to make a survey, so I am just going to post the question...
I am in a 4G soon area.
Sprint posted that the Orlando Florida area will be getting 4G by end of summer
I don't live or work in a 4G area, however it's only about 25 minutes away (Tacoma, wa) so whenever I go to the "Big City" I'll have 4G.
Well worth it to me.
It'll probably bleed down here soon enough anyway.
the huge 4.3 screen is worth it! your eyes will thanks you!
Portland, OR resident here... the city where it all started
4G coverage here should be quite good since WiMAX has been live the area for ~1.5 years or so.
Live in Atlanta, so I'm covered with 4G. Pretty excited.
I go to school in a 4G area 9 months out of the year, but right now I'm stick in a town that probably won't get 4G for quite some time. Honestly, I doubt I will ever use it outside of showing off to friends thanks to campus wifi and 4G's terrible signal penetration.

Congrats dude, I lived in vegas for awhile, I miss it :/
I'm in phoenix, no 4G here(i know, 5th largest city in the US or something and no plans even, wtf.
I was surprised to find 3 cites in North Carolina have 4G coverage. Not exactly disappointed though...
I wanted the Evo for the phone, and couldn't care less about 4G until I realized last night that I have Clear coverage at work and am on its border at home! Now I'm completely overwhelmed!
I can't wait until tomorrow!

How would I know if I broke my 4G if its not in my area? I took a long road trip last month with 4G turned on and I don't think I ever saw it on. I was on the interstate the areas that should have had it. I'm planning on going to atlanta for thanksgiving and would like to fix it before then as my aunt is an iphone user. I think I can figure out how to fix it but I'd rather make sure its broken first.
Interstate? If you had given us more details on like a state location name, like CA or NV or NY, I can tell you that in 2011, Sprint will have 4g signal towers working in the western states of USA, and the eastern states like NY, Viriginia, and some others in the eastern part of USA have their signal on 4g towers already and have reported good 4g signals with their htc phones.
Acutally, yamaford, buddy...we got a long way to wait for 4g anyhow, look at this sprint coverage map on 3g, then look into the tabs on the right section of the map page, click on 4g connection with sprint devices, and u can see like Topeka has a big area around its capital for 4g service...and some others, but that's all I can think of about 4g atm, it will slowly continue to put up 4g signal towers until and after 2011.
http://coverage.sprint.com/IMPACT.jsp?ECID=vanity:coverage
The people with the 4g services have HTC Evo 4g, so your not gonna break your 4g at all, just make sure u keep it switched on or off to test around new areas. GL
I think my Question was taken the wrong way. I know the areas I drove through have 4G ( I85 Charlotte and Greensboro N.C.) but does it reach the HWY or what. I really don't understand where its transmitted from. same towers as 3G? The reason I ask about breaking it is that I have been a flashoholic from day one. I've had them all. Im on VirusROM now and I did find out that my keys are still there. Haven't checked the M.A.C. address yet.
4G Coverage Towers
Here is a link to check where the 4G towers actually are and what areas they specifically cover. Sprint does not own their own 4G towers. They teamed up with Clearwire to roll 4G out.
Just wondering if anyone knows when the Sarasota / Bradenton Florida area can expect to see Sprint 4G coverage. Closiest coverage area is about 30 miles north in a town called Gibsonton, just south of Tampa.
Thanks
im already receiving spotty coverage. they seem to have two towers in sarasota already; one on clark and one on 17th and one by oneco in bradenton. their coverage map is a little optimistic with coverage but from my 3rd floor apartment i can pick it up.
Thanks Bro, my office is just west of the Blue Dolphin car wash on Cortez. I do not have 4G here. But your news is good and I see light at the end of the tunnel.
Thx again....
Wow you guys really dont have 4g over there yet that sucks. Hopefully soon!!!!!
Nope, we don't. Had to drive up to Gibsonton to try it out the 1st time and even then it was spotty. A good job does take time however....
I'm south of you in Ft. Myers, and very very spotty 4G coverage just started popping up here too. I haven't actually been able to do anything on 4G yet, thats how weak it is, but at least it's a start, right?
ah, gotcha, thanks for the update and YES, a good job does take time.....
I live in Bradenton and work in Sarasota off of fruitville and honore near i75 , and can pick up a connection for MAYBE 2 minutes at a time . Near the Sarasota airport however I've picked up a signal for a decent amount of time ... hope it's coming soon, especially since Verizon's LTE kicks in on Thursday in SRQ / Bradenton

Im in Long Island,NY with no 4g..That really sucks....
Sarasota Bradenton is large and there is just a little bit in sarasota and none in Bradenton
I'm in a so called "best" coverage area and still get spotty 4G outdoors and none indoors.
I'm just outside of Tampa.
old post but update news
I am able to get 4g lte downtown b-town but kind of on/off
Cortez and 14th st area 4g lte 3-4 bars
Between university and fruit ville on 75 4g lte 2-3 bars but drops out quickly.
Wish I knew where that tower was...
I was in a sprint store and the woman turned off my 4g switch and told me to not use it because we don't have 4g in my city. She said we only have 3g (crappy towers at that). Is it possible only larger cities have 4g? I've even attempted to find maps of where the 3g towers were in my city to see if I could test the connectivity but there's nothing offered. I'm honestly not sure what to do.
Check out sprint.com they have a map that overlays all there locations with 3g and 4g and what not. short answer to your question is yes. 4g is pretty limited to major US cities and even then not the whole cities. Over time they should get more coverage but we'll see how switching to lte over WiMax plays out.

I live in the US - Raleigh NC area, they have pretty decent coverage here. But seeing as I just got my phone and Sprint about 3 weeks ago I can't talk about travel at a distance. Stormglove is right, check out sprints web site.
There are like 3 towers with wimax in the whole state of Arizona but Phoenix is the 5th largest city in the nation... Go figure
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
I live in Louisville, KY. Apparently there are like 2 WiMax towers here. Connection is pretty poor though, even within range of WiMax I can get repeated connects and disconnects.
I dont get how they can even advertise 4g for Sprint. The amount of towers they currently have deployed probably dont even cover 10% of the usa i bet. Theres 1 tower in my state i beleive and its not even on the sqme island as me :-( they should advertise it as such.. "sprint, slow ass 3g and 4g thats probably not even within distance of a IBM missel" cause there 4g is a fricken joke

I get great 4g in NYC 5MB/sec (in my house which is practically a dead zone for ALL phones >_>{LUCKY ME!!!!}) and 10MB/sec+ outside my house. hopefully LTE shows better results for the rest of sprint users. =(

Us Mexicans can't build there.. we are not allowed in Arizona... duh!
I would just test it. I live in Prescott, Arizona, and according to sprint.com there isn't a 4g tower for miles and miles. However, on average I get 3 bars of 4g n a connection speed of about 12 mbps. So I would just flip it on every now and then and see

Well in the case of when i was in Gurnee Ill around thanksgiving they actually lost 4g.
Thanksgiving 2010 they had 4g while i was down there, Thanksgiving 2011 they no longer had 4g the week i was down there...
Strange...
i get 4g in philadelphia... although as i go about town i'd say reception is spotty at best. if i'm in a good spot 4g blazes. if i'm in a car or certain areas, it's nil.
on another note, i think wimax is more or less dead on the water? there will be no more or few towers invested in by sprint since they want to be on lte by 2013. i could be recalling this info inaccurately; also since they piggyback off clear's wimax that doesn't mean clear will cease expanding their market - but i'm not sure about any of this, so take this post as speculation.

Just go to clear.com and check the coverage map to see tower locations for your area since sprint is using them for their 4g coverage

I wonder how accurate that map is, as i supposedly have 4g.
But its sparatic at best...
Although i suppose sparatic means coverage in that area.
I would consider sprint's 4g more limited in market area's meaning most major markets but not all. Im just outside nashville, tn (not a major market) and its here & have been since june of 2010 but coverage is more spotty than anything. I work in a all glass building and its up and down like a roller coaster trying to get it to stay connected vs switching to 3g. In my home it wont even connect to 4g but not a big deal to me. Personally i would have done some research to see which area's its in b/c paying $10 for premium data isnt quite getting your money's worth in a non 4g area.
To the comment about not covering more than 10 percent of the country. It is probably a lot less than that even. But, since 80 percent of our country lives in urban environments it doesn't matter.
You won't get any type of 4G when your cruising down I-70 in BFE. But, it works fine in St. Louis or Kansas City. Even on a bigger carrier you have a similar problem.
If you've been waiting to see if your 'hood would be next up for Sprint to bless with a shiny new*LTE networkwe've got some potentially good news: by mid-2012 both Kansas City (regardless of what side of the Kansas / Missouri border you happen to be on) and Baltimore will be online. Those two cities will bring the total number of Sprint LTE markets to six, as they join the previously announced Houston, Dallas, San Antonio and Atlanta. The carrier and CEO Dan Hesse refused to be any more specific about a launch date on today's earnings call, though, we can tell you the service should be launching alongside the*Galaxy Nexus,LG Viper*and a Sierra Wireless mobile hotspot capable of connecting via CDMA, WiMAX and LTE. Check out the PR after the break for more details.Show full PR textBaltimore and Kansas City Sprint Customers to Benefit from 4G LTE and 3G Enhancements in 2012Sprint adds to the list of cities to benefit from new and improved network technology by mid-year

Oooooo yea!! Will get LTE at my dads business when i go to work for him
I think they should put lte networks into markets that dont have wimax yet. Hint hint Green Bay WI!

I was a bit shocked KC wasn't announced from the start. I knew or wouldn't take long. I bet they already have lte in Overland Park so they could test the new phones. Plus, the improved cdma will be great. I have horrible signal in my neighborhood(Briarcliff). The airrave helps a lot. Tye funny thing is they mentioned KU vs MU in the press release even though we all know that the chances of playing anymore are slim. Anyways, it is a pointless rivalry. KU sucks just like Johnson County and the rest of those cake eaters. Lol

I was told a while back it was kind of going to rollout in reverse meaning markets that don't have 4g would get the LTE first then the markets with WiMax would follow. ...in New Jersey now and the 3g has been great here. I haven't tested 4g much since I have Fios in the house..edit..I would imagine the major cities would have to follow very soon after because they need that advertising money...meaning L.A. and New York probably wont be far behind. Jersey represent!

there's a network vision site in north jersey right now. just googled it... Branchburg, NJ. about an hour drive for me.. but i've been considering making the drive to test it.
I'm fortunate to be in an area where sprint has great coverage, and speeds are really good. I'm usually getting bandwidth test speeds of over 1 mb/s, and sometimes even crest the 2 mb/s mark in the evenings. I rarely use 4G, one because my desk is on the other side of the building from the tower, so the signal barely makes it to my desk, and at home, it isn't all that great, either. I'll be curious to see if my data speeds improve on 3G once the NV initiative hits my neck of the woods. I'm also one of the first metros listed to get LTE when it comes out, but will wait to get a compatiable device until the Galaxy Nexus hits CL/Ebay for a decent discount.
Hows your LTE? I have yet to get a signal. I live in Astoria and my EVO3D always got 2-3 bars of 4G.. I travel to Clinton Hill for work and still get nothing
I never get any 4G anywhere in NYC, whether it be Astoria or Midtown. The only time I've ever gotten 4G service from sprint was when I was visiting someone in New Hampshire. It surprised the hell out of me, but it didn't even last long anyway. Sprint's 4G sucks.

This whole Thread seems confusing to me.
Sprint doesn't have any 4g LTE anywhere in New Hampshire. Only Wimax in the southern part of the state like Salem or Nashua. Trust me I know I live in New Hampshire. And why would you say Sprint's 4G sucks if you never had it?
Sprint 4g is awesome I've seen people people get almost 25mbps, you can say the coverage sucks because its only in a few cities but the speed is great.

There's no LTE in NYC. I heard some people get some LTE but that is mostly just sprint testing their network.

There is no 4G LTE in NYC, except in the Bronx.
However, when I am visiting my parents in the bronx, it's amazing and usually get at least 26mbps
Hi. There is LTE in NYC. But it is very spotty. There us a very small area in Manhattan midtown around 5th ave and 45th. Then along yh henry Hudson parkway from 86 to 120.
The Bronx is part of NYC as NYC has 5 boroughs and must of the LTE coverage can be found there. I would say 60% of the Bronx has it.
Brooklyn and queens a little in the crown heights and Jamaica sections

It was confusing to me too, that's why I was surprised. Pinched myself to make sure I wasn't dreaming, checked my download speed and it was indeed 4G. It was in Southern NH by the way, right near Nashua. Not that it makes any sense either way.
In the bronx I'm seeing between 3 and 12mbps....better reception near Morris park ave

LTE is definitely in brooklyn as well, unless theyve been "testing their network" for a month. I know that I always get at least 25mbps and the 4g icon is always lit up in bed stuy all the way to williamsburg, once i get into manhattan POOF its gone.
