The Desire's Radio Interferes with Head-phones? - Desire General

Hi there,
I didn't believe it at first, but the GSM / 3G radio on my Desire interferes with the headphones while I listen to music, to the degree that it is, well... unlistenable. I have to activate the Airplane Mode in order to listen to music, which I think is just preposterous. I've never had that problem with any other phone.
You know that annoying noise that cellphones can induce in stereo speakers, if the speakers are connected to an unearthed socket? That's what I hear in my headphones on the Desire.
Is this due to a unique fault in just my unit, or do any more of you hear this noise?
Cheers

I hear it only when the internet connection is active - and even then it is quite low (but still there).
So all I have to do is turn off internet connection and the problem is solved.

Hi i'm glad someone else has noticed this thought it was just me
here was my thread about it:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=683024&highlight=shielding
Definitely seems like poor shielding to me. I can't believe nobody else has noticed it. Maybe because I use sound isolating headphones so it makes background noise quieter?
A very serious flaw for something I use as my main Mp3 player

Someone at your thread wrote "Apparently I had the 'only use 2G networks' option turned on! Now with 3G the issue is gone". I am actually on the countryside at the moment and unfortunately required to connect using GSM / Edge, perhaps that's what causing the noise and it will disappear on 3G? Either way, it shouldn't be there in the first place

Just under that option is the option to turn off mobile internet...try that instead, at least you still get phone calls and messages that way.

I just replied in the other topic. I have this problem withg several in.ears, and disabling internet or enabling airplane mode doesn't help at all. As long as the phone plays sound (and for four seconds afterwards - ie, as long as the "soundcard" in the phone is turned on) it makes a hissing sound, making it completely unfit for music and to some degree tv series/movies too.
edit: Guess I should mention that the volume is also too loud, there is NO way I can have it more than two or three steps from the bottom, and between the lowest step and "silence" (ie. only hissing) there is quite a jump in dB.

What product are you using? I've only noticed this on products of poor quality. Both my AKG and MW600 have no problems with it at all.

As I said in the other thread, I'm using a good quality closed headset and there is no hint of hiss.

I have the same problem with a pair of Creative Aurvana in-ears and a pair of Sennheiser CX300. While they are not the most expensive sets you can buy, they bot sound fine while used with other devices - ie. a Nokia 5800, an iPhone 3g and my old Creatove Zen Micro. It is most certapnly the Desire that is the problem.
I expect to hear noise wih low ompedance in-ears on cheap laptops and non-branded china players, but not on somathing claiming to be a great multimedia phone at a pricetag of $620 (unbranded in Norway).
This prolem most likely stems from bad intrnal isolation of the audio chip/wires/jack, and would ofc not be heard with a BT headset... As to your AKG, unless they are low impedance in-ears, whether you hear noise in them or not is equally uninteresting.
I would really like someone with a good pair of low impedance headphones and good hearing to say that their phone is NOT producing this white noise. My pal didn't think his did, but it sure does. If it is just faulty units, it means it can be fixed, so I don't have to spend a few months getting my money back and find another phone to buy.

HBH-DS220?

Anyone here tried this new Sony-Ericsson Bluetooth Stereo Headset? Comments? Reviews? Reviews on the web?
yeah I tried it and still am!!!!
I bought the hbh-ds220 about a week ago and have had nothing but trouble.
Is a little temperamental connecting to my TYTN II and it not really clear how the buttons are supposed to work with things like voice dial, redial etc. If you just want it to play and pause music then its just about acceptable. The volume control is a bit naff... you press and hold the play button and it cycles through loud, louder, loudest, quiet, quieter, quitest. There's no visible way to tell what volume level you are on though so its a bit guess work.
The headphones are really poor by Sony standards. They are supposed to be mega bass but have barely any bass response at all.
The worst thing though is the in-call sound quality. It sounds like the person on the other end is talking underwater.
I have looked round the net to find a fix but found none. I can't be the only person having this trouble.
I love Sony products and only buy Sony. I wish I'd never laid ears on this though.
If anyone has any suggestons to improve the sound quality then I'd be grateful.
I bought a DS220 the other day and love it! It paired great with my HTC Touch Dual and I listen to music and take calls etc.
I dumped the SE earphones though and use my own ones.

I am having problems with the phone dropping the connection the the headset after calls. I have to turn the headset off and then on again to reestablish the connection after every call.
it's been a while, but hey, what the heck:

you should try a new one like Nokia original, Jabra etc. I think these are better.
or you will have to take to care center.

I recently bought a Jabra 3030 for my Diamond. And it STINKS. I even went through two of them, thinking that the first was faulty/broken. Nope. They both had a loud background noise that ruined any type of sound quality, not to mention the electronic turn on/off of the bluetooth itself that poked a hole in your ear.
I replaced it with a DS-200 (similar to the DS-220, presumably) and its much, much better. The noise is far less and the turn on/off is barely noticable.
This is just my personal experience though, everyone else seem to praise the 3030 for its quality...

Poor magnetic shielding

Hi all looked through the forum but can't see anyone else mentioning this.
When i have headphones pluggged into my Desire there is a noticeable hissing noise coming through them (I have a pair of fairly expensive Shure headphones) which seems to come on and off depending on whether the phone thinks it should be outputting noise. Anyone else noticed this? Was dead silent on my Iphone.
Anyway, as per the title above, when i am listening to music etc through the headphones in addition to the hiss i have just described i can hear the phone connecting to the network. Not sure how best to describe the sound sorry but it's like the one you get if you put your phone next to a speaker while you're making a call. It's not particularly loud but is extremely annoying. It's intermittent and seems to mainly occur when the phone is using GPRS or Edge.
It also occurs when i receive a call with my headphones plugged in.
Has anyone else experienced this or can anyone else test this by listening to music through headphones and browsing the web or similar?
I'm assuming it's down to poor magnetic shielding but want to see if it's just my phone or common to the Desire in general.
Cheers
No problems here using my Shure SE210 earphones. Whisper quiet using Meridian Player for both Videos and Music (FLAC).
Have you tried the earphones you get with the phone, or indeed other earphones? Just to try and isolate the problem...
I also have Shure SE210 and I rather don't use them with the Desire. The static level is just over the roof! What's more I also dislike the sound as a whole, it's tiny. I guess an equilizer could relieve this.
-------------------------------------
Sent via the XDA Tapatalk App
So has anyone else noticed this issue?
I use Shure SE210s too. But my point was they worked absolutely fine on my iPhone - this is why I believe the problem to be down to the phone hardware not the headphones. I can live with the slight static but the phone buzzing noises are unacceptable.
Hi,
I have the same issues (GPRS/EDGE noises). With any headphones I use, I can hear the phone accessing the data network. The problem is gone, when I'm on wifi. May this be related to custom ROMs and kernels? I really want to get this fixed
OK, I fixed it. Apparently I had the "only use 2G networks" option turned on! Now with 3G the issue is gone
Reviving an old thread here, but just wanted to say I have this problem with a pair of Sennheiser CX300's and Creative Aurvanas. Airplane mode doesnt help at all. As long as the phone is outputting sound, it's hissing. It lasts about four seconds after it has stopped playing sound. It is being retunred tomorrow, after HTC claimed it was not a known problem with the phone, and told me to try and return it.
The same earbuds work without a problem on a Nokia 5800 (Xpress Music "Tube") and an iPhone 3G. If this is a problem with all Desires, mine will be returned for my money back. You can't advertise a phone as a heavyweigth media phone with such a MAJOR flaw.

The hissing noise is present all the time while the phone is producing sound AND four seconds after. So I would say it is a pretty big problem.

You aren't very clear. Is your problem the quality or the volume? And is your phone branded or not? Branded phones are sometimes limited in volume.
i am not happy about the low handsfree rear speaker volume either. the phone ear piece speaker is ok volume wise. but the handsfree speaker is pretty crap and might probably take the crown for the worst handsfree speaker on the market. i have two desire phones and both are the same. loads of similar complaints on many forums (moneysavingexpert, avforums, three blog and others). htc must be having the heads in the sand if they havent heard about it. i think it is a deliberate denial of an obvious poor handsfree speaker, htc had some chap called dave who said he was following the posts on three blog and replied about poor stocks etc so HTC is aware about this issue, they are just dishing out denials or htc tech guys need to have their ears checked ASAP.
just put anyother phone or media player next to the htc desire and play the same sound / music via all the devices and htc desire will most probably take the crown for having the poorest rear speaker. at high volumes (which one needs anyway if one wants to hear in anywhere where the background noise is present) there is a lot of treble noise. on my archos 605 if i keep half the volume, for the same clip i wont get as good a volume on my desire at full volume. it is pretty easy to miss the notifications when out and about because one didnt hear the notifications.
the poor volume is obvious while using google navigation. while tomtom 760T has a great volume, but when i use the desires speakers for navigation voice, i have to keep the music off and can get tricky in busy traffic as sometimes the volume isnt enough or is barely enough. this might not be a problem when using car stereo with bluetooth but my car stereo does not have bluetooth or an input socket in the front as it is a few years old car.
the notifications volume must be with some internal settings i canty access as i have tried adjusting everything but it does not make a difference, or much of it. but the new yahoomail app i got from the market has a much much better volume that is easily audible. for the other notifications i downloaded the 'car mode' app that makes the notifications louder by using the rear speaker, i guess otherwise it uses the earpiece speaker by default, hence the low volume for the notifications. the volume is ok when inside and when it is quiet but just not enough when out and about. i didnt have a problem with speaker volumes with any of my handsets in the last decade, i am just adding that my ears are fine as they get checked by occupational health at work!

Thanks 4 your reply
I decided to sell My phone,Its useless as a media player
No support no update Thank You HTC
I bought 2 HTC Desire phones for me & my wife. Both of them have the most lowest & weakest speakerphones I have witnessed in any phone over the last 10 years. Even the regular flip phones which are not smartphones had the good quality speakerphones for conference. It's a shame having such a Flagship phone with pathetic speakerphone.
I called HTC customer service and though I already new their scripted answer I still asked 'Is it a known issue?'. There reply was what I expected. Complete Denial. 'No, this is the first time we are hearing it.' What a joke. I told him to do some google and check the forums. I also complimented him for lying so well.
He asked me to do soft reset, hard reset and do factory reset which would wipe out all data. Simply put they were giving me a run around & wasting my time so I stopped him right there that son I have already done that.
He transferred me to their Repair department, who turned out to be Telus customer service and they said since it's a new phone you have a 1 year warranty, take your phone to the store you bought it from with the receipt and they'll replace it. I asked what if the replaced phone also have the same problem then what are my options. She said you need to discuss it with the store from where you bought it from, they can let you have another phone but you can't break the 3 year contract.
Dealing with the phones issue is frustrating enough and on top of that frustration caused by the absolute denial by HTC's customer service & not providing a solution is totally unacceptable. I'm selling my HTC Desire on ebay and probably buy the Nokia N8.
Sometimes all what a customer needs is an apology and admission that yes we are not crazy, there is a known issuee with the phone and they'll fix it. But they are following on the footsteps of Apple who literally made their customers feel like they are crazy when they reported about iphone 4 antenna issues. Shame on Apple for telling them that they are not holding the phone properly as if dealing with ignorant kids. Such behavior isn't expected from such large and reputable corporations. Nokia on the other hand makes the best phones and admit their problems and fix them.
What do expect from a tiny rear speaker?? If you want decent sound then plug in some speakers!!

To be fair, I also have a T-Mobile Pulse Mini as a backup phone, and the internal speaker is way, way, better than the one on the Desire.
IMHO, the Desire's speak is "ok", if you want to take/make a handsfree call whilst sitting at your desk, but is worse than useless if you are in a car - for both taking calls and satellite navigation. I do have bluetooth handsfree, so it is less of an issue for me personally, but given the price of the phone I think they could've made the internal speaker a little higher quality.
Regards,
Dave
But the phone isn't a media player in the traditional sense, you wouldn't watch a film on it without headphones...given, it could be a bit louder for the navigation side of things but I've got Sat Nav for that...

The headphone volume is really low on my desire (stock t-mobile rom) even with hi end noise cancelling headphones and volume at max (am told this is a problem with the t-mobile rom), now I use mixzing which has a gain and graphic for music. It is almost imposible to watch a film while on the underground tho, which is really annoying me, am waiting to see if the froyo update fixes this, if not I will root and change to unbranded rom.

HTC One X Audio Hiss

Seen quite a few topics on this, seems no one has a solution.
What I'm trying to accomplish with this is to see if EVERY HTC One X has this problem of a hissing noise in the background.
The hissing noise sounds somewhat like television white noise, and is apparent when playing music at low volume and during quiet parts of a song.
Testing Method:
i) Using headphones/earphones/whatever that plugs in the headphone port,
ii) Play music or other audio.
iii) Turn volume down to zero (0%)
iv) Listen for the noise.
Repeat method with no headphones i.e. with speaker, and put speaker up to your ear (very close). Try and listen for the noise.
my one x has the issue too.
As far as i know this is not an issue and it's normal, try doing the same thing with any other device and you will hear the same thing, may be hard to notice sometimes but it's there ( I didn't notice this on my HOX until i read your thread )
I do have this hiss on my one x.It can easily be heard when the music is stopped and this hiss continues for a small second!
It drives me mad as I tend to listen to music on lower volumes compared to others...
Sent from my HTC One X
if it is for 2-3 seconds and then it stops, it's normal, not an issue, due to a low voltage signal the sound chip sends to audio device (whether that would be a simple earphone, or a full support Bluetooth audio kit) to announce that the sound broadcasting is finished... (fade out noise)
Same here.
At 0% volume mine does not hiss, however if I play a song then pause it there is a faint hiss for a second or two then it stops completely.
Here's another one, plug the charger in and here the buzzing/feedback through the earphones when charging...

No, the problem that I'm experiencing and trying to see if others experience is whether the hiss is happening DURING the music. I understand if you listen to music at above 50% you most likely will not hear it during the music.
Yes, I have got the same problem and it is caused by very poor SNR of One X DAC or analog circuit.
It is very annoying for me, as I use sensitive IEMs and my old HD2 has not got this issue at all - I just find hard to accept that I have to hear audio noise in 2012 flaghsip device. There are some workarounds possible that can POSSIBLY at least partially mitigate the problem:
1. Use less sensitive headphones
2. Use some kind of attenuator, like:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Sound-lev...13488602?pt=US_Headphones&hash=item1e6f218cda
and increase listening volume at the same time
Issue confirmed. Could not believe that in this day and age I am confronted with such an obvious hiss on this top-of-the-line HTC phone.
Coming from the S2, I have not been impressed with the quality of the One X. I like the screen though, when I can't see any yellow spots, that is.

Alternative was to use Bluetooth, I personally might get an APT-X adaptor thats portable so I can connect to my home cinema system or car stereo through the jack input....

[Q] Bluetooth headset range

Maybe I should put this thread on accessories. But I'm not sure if it can be solved in the phone itself.
I'm looking for a simple headset which allows audio streaming, and can be used in one ear only.
My problem is that several headsets I tried don't have a range that extends from my left pant-pocket to my right ear. And even the range left pocket to left ear is problematic. And the problem isn't that I'm very tall!
The symptom is that the music breaks off for a few seconds, and then continues.
I tried the Platronics M25, and Jawbone ERA.
Is there anything one can adjust in the phone to extend the bluetooth range? I'm on the standard 4.1.2.
Or, which headsets have a good range?
Thanks!
Do you want music or talking? I mean, is must sound quality important?
Basically there are a ton of Bluetooth headsets for calls that work at good distances. From the sounds of it your Bluetooth is not functioning properly.
I use a Plantronics Voyager Pro+ and it work pretty much anywhere in my house.
Shame it doesn't have an external speaker or vibrate function for incoming calls!

This is mainly for listening to podcasts. So sound quality isn't super important, but I need a2dp, or some such.
Could it have to do with the fact that I'm biking? Could it somehow be that the phone is at a strange angle, or moving, which makes the bluetooth reception worse?
No, I just did an experiment with my M25, both on the Note 2 and on an Xperia ray:
phone on the couch, I walk away ~3 meters, and music reception drops.
Maybe I should try the PRO+. But I'd like something smaller....
