Need help rooting - Desire General

Im a complete idiot...
Now that I have got that out of the way, can someone please explain the basic process to rooting my device.
I had rooted my my Hero fairly easily, but the talk of boot loader etc has got me confused.
Reading this part of Modaco's instructions:
To be ready for the guide, download one of the following items...
- If you have a bootloader version 0.75.xxxx or below AND a current ROM of 1.15.xxx.x or below - DOWNLOAD (MediaFire) / MIRROR (ROMraid / CoBlitz) - MD5: 4845a38155e6a257a7de3fe0557ae34c
- ONLY if the above download is not suitable - if you have a bootloader version 0.80.xxxx or below AND a current ROM of 1.21.xxx.x or below - DOWNLOAD (MediaFire) / MIRROR (ROMraid / CoBlitz) - MD5: eb1dfb6fa93c592b6ccf0cabefcd2dec
Once you have this on your machine, you're ready to start!
Note: If you require the previous 'TinyCoreLinux' r3 build, you can download it here (MediaFire) or here (ROMraid / CoBlitz) - MD5: 854bdbb3c5898b15f92b5991204c9288.

Where do I download bootloader from?
Also, I have a sim free Desire... do I need to create a goldcard, and if not which steps can i miss from the instructions.
I think I need a stupidly basic version.
So sorry, and I feel like as soon as I realise what I'm missing I'm gonna feel like a real ****.
Thanks!

The bootloader is already on your device. You just need to check is the right version. Go to "About phone" it should tell you.
Then download r5-desire-root and you should be well on your way.
Watch out for USB bricks. I don't think there is any way to stop them yet, but there is a simple fix, which is details in this forum.

You don't download bootloader, your phone has Bootloader on it already - but there's two versions 0.75 and 0.80 and you need to find out which one your phone has so you can download the right root ROM.
You can do that by holding the back key whilst turning on the device. The first screen you see will say which version your phone has.
You won't need to create a gold card by the sounds of things, so just backup all the files on your SD card and format it (you can format it via the phone).
So just skip the goldcard bit and start from when it tells you to boot into recovery (by holding volume down and power).
When you run the step2 script, the rootupdate.zip is pushed to your empty SD card, ready for the next step in the process.

Thanks boys, much appreciated! I'll let you know how it goes.

Quick thing, running the process through OSX, in the command prompt for step 1 its asking me for a password. I cant enter anything here and pressing enter just says its incorrect. Any ideas?
Cheers

Enter your user account password. Don't worry about not getting *'s.

Ah got you... one thing I didn't try. Will give it a go when I get home. Looking forward to see how it all goes as the Hero rooting did wonders!

dont want to root right now , but thank you guys , really informative posts

Updating to Froyo for non-European unlocked/locked handsets.

EDIT: Regarding ROOTING: there are now rooted 2.2 official ROMs available with all kinds of goodies. If you have a rooted phone, or wanted to root anyway, you have the option of using those ROMs. This thread is then not for you.
BY FOLLOWING THE BELOW STEPS YOU WILL LOSE ROOT. If you want to root in the future, use a custom rom from the development section.
You do NOT need to have a rooted phone to do the below modifications. Everything is done using only official HTC Roms. You will have the official 2.2 Update as a result of the below steps.
Now back to your regular programme
-------------------
Ok for those who have itchy hands and must have the europe Froyo update on their non-Europe handsets:
The trick: treat your phone as if it were branded, even if you thought it wasn't. This applies especially to those with chinese input. This means you will need to do two things: create a gold card and de-brand your phone to European WWE 1.21 firmware.
Estimated time: give it an evening. There are a lot of things to do, so it may take a while, even if you're awesome and you've rooted and done other things to your phone you shouldn't do
Creating a gold card has been covered in detail see:
http://theunlockr.com/2010/03/10/how-to-create-a-goldcard/
But a few TIPS to note:
1. backup whatever you have on your memory card, just in case before starting the gold card creation process. you may have to format it.
2. look for the gold card creation tool, it will save you a lot of time
3. you will need to store your upgrade image on your gold card. when you are done creating your gold card, double check that when you unplug it from your computer and plug it back in, you are still able to put files in it. ie you do NOT get the message from Windows suggesting you should format it. If you get this message, do the gold card process again.
Now that you have a Gold Card...
Step 1: Unlocking
Get the WWE image:
http://shipped-roms.com/shipped/Bra...00.28U_4.06.00.02_2_release_126984_signed.exe
This is a windows installer and is run from your computer. This WILL wipe all data from your phone and perform a factory reset.
I recommend using something like myBackup to backup your important information (bookmarks, smses etc). You can even back up Apps with myBackup, but since you are wiping data you might as well reinstall as you are not likely to get your Apps preferences back. Reinstalling also puts more of your apps into your SD memory, froyo style.
So, do a backup to your regular SD card, shut down. Pop in your Gold Card, boot up your phone, go into HTC sync mode (this enables USB debugging), and then run the above exe.
Follow instructions in the installer.
Step 2:
Now you have an unbranded phone. Keep your gold card in there, don't bother setting up your phone as you can do all this after we get froyo. And if something fails, you will be kicking yourself for having to do it again
Grab the update image from:
http://liveimage.htc.com/OTA_Bravo_Froyo_HTC_WWE_2.09.405.8-1.21.405.2_release4dua3bcrut4wrv30.zip
Hopefully it stays up there for some time, but if it gets taken down I'm sure you will be able to find someone who has a copy
When done downloading, rename this file "update.zip" and copy this file onto your Gold Card.
This is why it was important in step 1 to make sure your Gold Card can still accept writing files to it.
Step 3: The update
Shut down your phone. Boot recovery mode.

Hi Annafil - first - many many thanks for sharing this - I had purchased a Desire from the grey market in the UAE, and it was from Singapore, and I couldnt get rid of the Chinese keyboard options that kept coming up every time I typed. I couldnt also use the official wwe roms - and then ur post came along. Now thanks to you, I have the wwe rom, with Froyo chugging along perfectly fine on my Desire Thanks a ton.
Just a quick comment - refer the instructions quoted above - the video is not really reflecting the right tasks to be done at the 3rd step - I looked around and found these comments, and thought will put them down - you might want to use this in your comments as an alternative to the video
When you want to launch the recovery image
1. Turn on your device with 'volume down' pressed and select 'Recovery'
2. When the exclamation mark appears, press and hold 'volume up' then press 'power'
3. Select the second option, 'Apply sdcard:update.zip'
For more information, see video for instructions:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zi0PTV992WA
In recovery mode, use the option to load "Update.zip" from memory card.
This will kick start the update.
If you have done everything right, it will do some copying (an error about failing to load something related to cache is normal, ignore it). Your phone will reboot, show you an upgade in progress icon, reboot again into your regular phone mode and tell you you have successfully upgraded. It will then do a quick load from 0 to 100%, and then present you with keyboard settings.
You now have froyo. Shut down, swap out your gold card for your regular card with your myBackup backup, boot up.
Get online, grab myBackup from the market place. If you did this all within 30 days you've still got your free trial, so click restore inside myBackup and have fun

Yes thanks to your write up, I have now in my hand a froyo-ed HTC Desire Woo Hoo!
Hi to all SG desire users,
Able to install back chinese input after you upgrade to froyo using european rom?
Out of interest... are we able to do the initial rooting of the Asian rom via the 'Unrevoked' method??
Its a hell of a lot less complicated than making a gold card... but I havent heard much feedback on whether it will work with the faux-branded Asian roms.
My current stock rom:
Firmware version 2.1-update1
Baseband version 32.36.00.28U_4.06.00.02_2
Kernel version 2.6.29-c8d11160
[email protected]#1
Build number 1.20.751.5 CL171460 release-keys
Software number 1.20.751.5
HBOOT 0.80.000
Cheerz in advance.
Is root required for this?
Chinese input is available for me on world generic. Can't tell you if it's very good since don't use it but it's there.
No, you do not need to root.
Rooting is not the same as making a gold card and won't help you to install the ota successfully.
The rest: my pleasure happy to have saved someone the headache I had trying to do this.
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
I'd be curious if anyone has an easier way to accomplish the same thing without losing settings, for instance.
Does rooting require to do this processes?
I bought my handset from an importer, how do I work out where its from and what version its running?
Can I completely ruin the phone if this goes wrong?

If the software number is something like x.xx.405.x then you're running an unbranded phone.

hye. i'm from asia. ok.. i have several question.
1. Do i have to always keep the goldcard the sdcard after update or i can simply delete the file?
2. Am i be able to auto update (if any) in the future or i have to go through the same procedure again?
3. After Step 1, can i just check for update on the phone instead installing the update from boot recovery mode?

1. No, you don't need the gold card once you are done.
2. If you use the European firmware on an Asian phone, you will likely need the gold card for future updates.
3. Yes, you can, but you have to have the gold card in your phone when you are running the update. So your gold card still has to be your SD card.
the update has a tendency to ask for more space, and then ask you to download again. i figured it would be easier to tell people to run the update.zip because that way less stuff can go wrong. But yeah, it's the same thing.
The update.zip does not wipe your phone. If you have settings on the European 2.1, or if you already used a gold card to go to WWE rom before, you won't lose settings.

I don't think it is because the asian version is 2.19 wheras the world wide english is 2.21.
I had a problem in that the update would not apply - but I had taken out my gold card between applying the 2.1 WWE rom and applying the Froyo update. BTW, if it keeps rebooting, and has a problem with "system" force closing - then you have this problem.
Anyway, in desperation, I thought I would go back to the asian rom - but the euro rom is more recent, and it refused to downgrade (Error 140). Oh well. I do have a successful Euro rom, I just haven't Froyoed it yet - something for tonight.
I have successfully completed 1&2 steps but I am getting error in step3, see the attached screen grab.
I am using a Gold Card to try and get over the signature verification issues.
Does anyone have a suggestion as to what else to try please?
just followed all the steps and my phone is rocking Froyo! yipee. pretty smooth process. took me <2 hrs.

Okay, I agreed ... but, let's try to be helpful to OP whose native language is obviously not English.
I believed s/he is trying to say the device is doing an endless boot-looping and cannot get into Recovery - looking for help from us here.
OP, what carrier or home system (CDMA or GSM) are you using the phone on? Did it worked before? What were you doing with the device before this happened - trying to flash a new/different ROM, kernel or radio, etc. ??
You will need to learn and use ADB, read the sticky in this Forum and/or get someone familiar to help you with it. In the unlikely situation of being on Verizonwireless CDMA system, you can flash the RUU file and restore it to stock (unrooted) and start over - after getting it activated again & restore all the factory settings.

It sounded like you are a complete newcomer to all this and you are going to need extra help to avoid bricking your device completely into a useless paperweight.
ADB is Android Debug Bridge, see the "Wiki" section above here on XDA and read about it, you can also google for details & how to.
Please answer, was your DI2 working before? Is (was) it activated on Verizonwireless? Was it working before this endless boot-looping?
To give you a very general idea of what is involved here, and it isn't simple but most of us learned it, sometimes - the hard way !! So be careful, very careful on what you are about to do !! If you are not confident or comfortable, don't even attempt to try & do it.

Here is a dropbox link to the OEM/stock RUU file released from VZW that I've saved & restored to dropbox from my collection - https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u....01.1111_NV_VZW1.92_release_225831_signed.exe
Please download this to your PC (linked file will be removed after 72 hours) - and prepare your DI2 by making sure it's 75% to 100% charged first. Make backup copies of your mSD card to a safe location, just in case.
Next, power on your DI2 and connect it to your PC via the micro-USB cable, then run or launch this RUU file. Read the warnings and click thru to run it - it will flash & restore your phone to factory fresh, stock condition and result in your DI2 being UN-rooted again. However, it will not change or affect SIM unlocking (if it was already done) - and, the process should take about 10 minutes or so, and when it is finished, power down & reboot the smartphone - and it should take you to the initial Startup/Setup Screen menu - follow it and get it activated again, including downloading the latest PRL from OTA.
When it is finished, you will need to follow the steps & guides to root it, install a custom recovery and SU, etc. Then, you can install your choice of custom ROM and/or kernet, etc.
The above approach is more fool-proof than using ADB to flash a different bootloader and to try to restore it to working conditions etc. with the tradeoff of losing root, which can be easily reversed again.
Let me know if you decided to go ahead and the results/outcome, etc.
Option #2 - If, however, you do not want to lose root and you can boot your device into Custom Recovery (CWM - not stock recovery) - use this link here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1599767
Follow it & download the "Stock" PG32IMG from CS, copy it to your mSD card, boot into Recovery & flash the zip file - it SHOULD get your device backup and running again (it might NOT, I haven't done this in a while) and as long as you don't need to mess with the bootloader again (which might be corrupted or damaged, etc.) - you are good to go. Once it's up & running, you can restore & setup your APPS again - and/or install other custom ROM of your own choice, at your own risk, of course. But, make a CWM Backup first before doing so in between.
Good Luck & Regards !

M9 with 5.1 OS rootable?

Earlier today, I finally made the jump to HTC after owning multiple versions of Samsungs over time. The OS version (AT&T) is confirmed as the latest 5.1. Being brand new to HTC, I know I have some learning to do in terms of rooting. Honestly I just want to have root to run a few pieces of software, but I'm not looking right now at messing with custom ROM flashes or anything like that. Mainly interested in using TiBu to do some de-bloat, and I also have an interface app needed for my car stereo that needs the root access. FYI, I used to jailbreak iPhones ages ago, plus I've had tons of luck keeping all my Samsung phones and tablets done. I consider myself somewhat techie, but need to do adequate reading on the HTC methodology so something doesn't get all gummed up in the works.
Soooo, can someone point me to a good step-by-step starting point thread? Also want to be sure 5.1 didn't close up the holes people have been using over time. Many thanks in advance!

1) go to HTCdev.com and request an unlock token. It will walk you through the complete process of unlocking bootloader. *note* this process wipes internal storage
http://www.htcdev.com/bootloader
2) read the first three posts of the twrp thread.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/one-m9/orig-development/recovery-twrp-touch-recovery-t3066720
3) click the downloads tab of the twrp thread and download "twrp-2.8.7.1_CPTB-B1-hima.img" to your fastboot folder (during step 1 you got fastboot working on your computer).
4) reboot boot into download mode and flash twrp from a command line ("fastboot flash recovery twrp-2.8.7.1_CPTB-B1-hima.img")
5) reboot to bootloader and use the volume down button to highlight boot to recovery and press the power button to select that.
6) at the first twrp screen screen select to leave system read only
7) select backup
8) place a check next to system image. You can deselect everything else...or leave boot, data and system selected, but you really don't need them. System image is what you need to get back to stock. Data might be useful if you ever flash a custom rom and want to go back to stick, but I don't know about that. Swipe to start backup. You now have an unmodified system image that you can restore later.
9) back out to main menu, select reboot and reboot back to recovery
10) this time on the opening screen swipe the bottom to make the system r/w
11) go to reboot and select system, swipe to reboot. You're going to get a notice saying you're not rooted and ask if you want to install supersu. Swipe to do this.
12) once the phone boots up, go to the app drawer and you'll see an icon for supersu. Open that and follow the instructions on screen to finish the process. This will probably include downloading a file and rebooting into twrp again. But like I said, just follow the instructions in the app.
You're now rooted.
Hope this helps. Enjoy.

One more thing, since you mentioned the backup. The HTCdev unlock process will wipe your entire phone. So be sure you backup anything you don't want to lose first, like photos.

Yep. I figured he would read that in the dev unlock process, but it was nice of you to point that out specifically.
I was trying to keep it simple and promote reading. But I added this warning to step one.

Thanks for the tips on backups, but it is still a brand new phone. Haven't even started moving apps, music, pics, etc yet. And my first issue, as luck would have it, has appeared on your step #1 (ugh). Following through the links, I wound up here:
http://www.htcdev.com/bootloader/unlock-instructions
It talks about doing the volume down & power sequence and states the phone should go into bootloader mode. Mine actually goes into download mode, but there is a menu item there to reboot to bootloader. When I do that, it pulls up a different output screen / menu:
*** Software status: Official ***
*** LOCKED ***
*** S-ON ***
Reboot
Reboot to bootloader
Reboot to download mode
Reboot to recovery mode
Power down
The problem is that the instructions are telling me to get to "fastboot" mode before proceeding to the next steps. That particular setting doesn't show up in either the bootloader or download mode menus. Is it something simple I'm missing??

The instructions aren't updated yet. The "fastboot mode" only exists on older HTC phones. The M9's "fastboot mode" is actually the "download mode".

Thanks again.

Once you're rooted, it's really worth getting s-off through Sunshine. It's $25, but it will allow you to flash the most current firmware on your phone instead of waiting for your carrier to push it out, in addition to some other goodies like being able to change your splash image. This phone had some serious issues at launch that have since been fixed with the most recent 5.1 updates, so you don't want to be stuck on old firmware.
Well jollywhite's instructions went right down the middle and helped accomplish every line item I requested. THANK YOU!!!
So Elvis, what is this sunshine thing? I've already started cleaning up bloat with TiBu, but don't have any additional flashing on the radar. Root is good so I can now start moving all my stuff over.

Congratulations on successfully unlocking & rooting your phone. It's a good feeling to learn how to do it and then get it done, and why XDA is such a great place.
Sunshine (currently on version 3.1) is a paid software solution that will get you S-OFF on your M9. It's developed by XDA members for aficionados - the cost is to cover their costs for materials and work done. There are some limitations and caveats, so be sure to read the thread carefully (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2792487).
[edit]Re-reading your post, it seems that you may not need or want S-OFF. If you are satisfied with a custom recovery and root, S-OFF doesn't add anything you need[/edit]

Glad everything worked out. Good job.
At some point you're probably going to want to s-off. Waiting for AT&T to approve updates can be excruciating at times. For example, AT&T didn't release lollipop for the M8 until freaking April, where international firmware for lollipop was available in December or early January.
That said, I would probably wait because there's really not a need right now. At&t just pushed new firmware so you can run any rom you like at the moment. I'm pretty sure I read you were on 5.1 right? That means you should be on the new 2.6 firmware.

Yeah, that was really surprising, AT&T actually pushed it out before Europe, which I've never seen happen before. But no guarantee that will continue.
Vol4Ever, they're correct that you can wait on s-off for now, until you're more comfortable being rooted and modding your phone. There's little real benefit in doing it at the moment.

Newbie! Zenfone 2 now rooted...now what!

Hi all,
I have a zenfone 2 that I have just rooted....so now what?
Basically I wanted to optimise my phone so I am able to disable annoying notifications which are greyed out (although since rooting and checking this it still greyed out) I want to remove bloatware and I would actually like to customise my own android system, starting from a 'vanilla' base where I can build it up myself.
I have also read that I need to install a android recovery programme on asap after rooting.
So sorry about this but I really do need 'stupid' instructions as using hi tech words will just baffle me. lol
I have played around with computers in the past and learned about them so this is the phone stage now!
Thanks in advance and for your patience with this newbie!

Hi Kerry,
First thing you should now do after rooting your device would be flashing a custom recovery that is specific to your device (make sure your devices boot loader is unlocked first). This will allow you to make a backup of everything just in case anything were to go wrong, flash custom ROMs and useful zips. You can pick your favorite custom recovery such as Team Win Recovery Projects custom recovery (TWRP), Clock Work Mods custom recovery (CWM) or Philz Touch recovery based off of CWM although personally I would recommended twrp.
There are multiple ways to do this: Using the TWRP/CWM recovery installer from the play store or the more complicated way of flashing it from your computer. If you were to choose to install TWRP from their app on the play store (grant it root permission) you can select your device from the supported device section within the app, pick the latest recovery, hit the install button and let the app work its magic. If all works correctly you can now reboot to recovery and you will see TWRP is installed. Now you should create a backup to be on the safe side and you're good to go!
To best optimize your device I would recommend installing a custom ROM (look up custom ROMs for the Zenfone 2) and install the zip through recovery. (make sure to pick the right ROM for your device and version otherwise you may soft brick your smartphone) Now with a custom ROM you can better optimize your device and fully customize it to your liking. Make sure to look up custom ROM installation instructions for your device for better detail.
As far as removing system apps/bloatware you can use a "root app delete" tool from the play store but be careful what you remove as some applications are required!
Make sure to take your time and be careful when attempting any of these things and be careful what you modify! Just remember that no question is a stupid question as we all have to start somewhere!
Hope I was able to help you even if it was just a little, good look and have fun!
Rooted Droid Thanks you so much!!! First of all thanks for being so patient with me and secondly thanks for the useful (and easy to read) information.
I will go and install a back up on my phone from the ones you have suggested.
Hopefully you will be around over the next few days if I have more questions. Not planning on doing this all at once but rather taking the time and doing it right.
Thanks so much again!! :good::good::good:

Not a problem! I'm always happy to spread some knowledge and appreciate when people do the same to me! I also went ahead and checked the TWRP app and the Zenfone 2 is supported so it looks like your good to go. And yes absolutely, there's no rush so take all the time you may need and everything will go smoothly! I'm always around and will try my best to answer questions.

Check this site out:
http://myzen.asus.com/2015/10/13/official-bootloader-unlock-for-zenfone-2-is-now-available/
All devices have a different method for unlocking bootloader (some don't even have locked bootloaders) but this is an official bootloader unlocking method for the Zenfone 2 from Asus itself. I suggest following its directions and you should be able to unlock it this way.
Ok I followed the link but now I am confused. I have version ww_2.20.40.63_201......
Apparently I need a later version. What started off with just adding an APP means me doing other things before I even get to that point (hence the confusion! lol)
I never updated the phone via OTA as I was told it would invalidate my warranty and also I have killed a phone before using that so can you walk me through please...if you have the time....or could I just check if I have it unlocked already??
I haven't even gotten to the part where I create a backup...tee hee

Hi sorry for the late reply, I'm in Canada so it was 2am when I was last talking to you so I went to bed haha. Anyway as far as unlocking the Zenfone 2's bootloader I wouldn't have experience unfortunately as I'm using a Nexus 5. The easiest way to go about this now would be to go to your device specific forum and find a way to unlock it there.
The following way to unlock the bootloader requires you have ADB installed on your PC. This is a guide for installation on Windows :
http://www.android.gs/install-android-sdk-adb-windows/
And here is a thread specific to unlocking the Zenfone 2 using adb:
http://www.xda-developers.com/asus-zenfone-2-bootloader-unlocked-without-asus/
BTW as you mentioned "updating may invalidate your warranty" things like rooting, installing a custom OS, unlocking the bootloader, installing a custom recovery and other things like that all (in most cases) void your warranty.
Sorry I can't personally help with the bootloader as I've not personally unlocked it on a Zenfone. Still feel free to ask any questions if you need to. Good luck!

Upgrading my rooted HTC10 to Android 7.0

Hello,
I keep receiving notifications to update my Dutch HTC 10 phone to software 2.41.401.4.
I see that this is the version of Nougat 7.0 for HTC 10 in the Netherlands. This is indeed where my phone is.
Last October, I rooted the phone.
After I have downloaded the 1 GB+ update, I accept to install it.
the phone reboots and I see the "Teamwin Recovery Project 3.0.2-6" logo
The next page says: running OpenRecoveryScript
after 20 secs, I see the TWRP home page with the 8 tiles (Install, Wipe...)
This is where I stuck. What is the next step?
I only dared to push the "Reboot" tile, then I tried:
Recovery => back to TWRP home page, this time, I didn't see the "running OpenRecoveryScript"
Bootloader => no much more to do there. by the way, if this helps, the top of the screen says:
*** Software status: Official ***
*** UNLOCKED ***
*** S-ON ***
Download => not much there, it says at the bottom: FILE /mnt/media_rw/ext_sd/2PS6IMG.zip File NOT FOUND
System => phone reboots correctly and I get this error message: the downloaded system update update is corrupted, do you want to download again?
I repeated the update process about 6 times and I always get the same corruption problem.
I'm hoping to find a way to update my phone without loosing anything.
Is there a specific workflow to follow for rooted phone and TWRP ?
Thanks
PS:
I did envisage the computer-based update:
I downloaded the update .
my problem is that this method claims that it will erase all my data. something I'm not yet willing to do:
I did that with my previous phone and I used titanium backup to restore everything but it didn't work well, got lots of system errors
Google seems to offer a similar method of restoring, also tried it and it didn't restore all apps and all my game data were not restored.
You need to restore an untouched stock backup AND stock recovery for OTA updates to work. Do you have both of those?
Else, you can flash manually. Look at the TWRP thread, in the second post there is a FAQ that will guide you in the right direction.
Both of these methods won't make you lose anything other than root, which you can just flash again after you're done.

Hi,
I don't have the stock backup and the stock recovery.
I guess I'll try the manual flash then.
thanks

Have a look or ask here, lots of stock backups available in the OP and by others in the thread.

Hi,
I spend a solid 3-hour reading tens of pages of posts in the faq thread and other web pages. It looks very complicated, I see a lot of acronyms and processes which are way over my head.
I must admit this is just not for me. There is a serious risk that I **** something up.
I will stay on my current android 6. I don't wish to ask more stupid newbie questions and frustrate members.
thanks for your help, I still learnt a few things.

Lol, no worries man. It's not always obvious.
The steps are not that complicated actually once you got through them once. The absolute "easiest" way to do it would be to find an appropriate RUU for your phone, which is a file that restores all partitions of your phone back to factory. Then you'd take the OTA from htc, and go through the process of flashing TWRP and rooting again. See if you can find such an RUU for your model and software version in the thread I linked you above.
Also FYI there is a N00b thread that is sticked to ask any type of question. You'll probably find help in there as well.
