Hi im thinking of buying a htc desire would you say its a good phone is it easy to root, what android does it run. Any info would help
it runs android 2.1, and is fairly easy to root but we don't have full root access.
If you want the latest updates quick (2.2) and easy rooting get the nexus one

The current root that we have is a temporary workaround. It is dependent on a pc to push files to the phone to enter recovery mode.
You can read more about it here.
But of course developers are working on it and I believe we will have a full root in no time.
i know its too let...
but i am going to buy a Desire, so what should i look for? is there any version of android to look for, any specific hboot version?
i want to root it. so any info will be greatly appreciated...
GSM desires all are rootable. Newest CDMA (sold in the USA) are not yet.
Updates are available OTA, or via download, so does not matter what version it comes with, you can update easily.

This. This phone is still a good device for those who bought it like 1 year ago or so, it didn't grew very old..but ofc if you wanna go for a new toy you should really look at the Galaxy-S II or at the Optimus Dual atm.
If your looking for a pretty powerful phone, get a dual core. Desire is good and it is easy to root (GSM) but internal storage lets it down. If you want, get the Desire S but no point. Get the Sensation or wait for Google I/O and see what is going to be available.
I got the first generation HTC Desire, and i'm very unhappy with it. The antenna and GPS isn't very powerful, and as with original firmware it got a lot of lag-problems. So I wouldn't prefer the Desire's.
I got the Desire when it first came out. It is a good phone, but as has been mentioned above, rather wait for the dual core phones to come out. I have had mine for 12 months, 6 to go on my contract and can't wait for a faster phone, perhaps I'll wait an extra few months for a quad core(insert daydream here). But if you are looking for a "budget" quality phone, I don't think you can go wrong with a Desire.

I second this.
The Desire is an awesome phone, but you can get an even better one for a bit more money.
That said,if you want something like the Desire but newer, try the Desire S or Samsung Galaxy Plus (it'll come out soon)...i'd recommend a dual core phone...but thats just a big waste of money >_>
There are at least two versions of Desire on makret now: made in Thailand and China, they say that the thailand's ones are better at least concerning building... but they are slightly more expensive...
So... you decide,.)
Thanx guys for your advice...
I chose it because its amoled display. If not how about desire hd, think this will help with the Rom memory. I am buying used ones. So latest ones are not suitable for me.
Thank you guys again.......

DHD's battery isn't that powerful and its still 5 months old phone now. Unless you can get it for pocket change, I'd wait for newer models and then buy the top **** available.

Desire HD has a lame screen (lcd, not even slcd) with poor color qualitty and you can't see anything in the sun light. It has the worst battery perfomance a phone could ever have and with all these deal breakers they cost a lot. Not to mention its too...frigging big, it has the size of my wallet.
The classic Desire is definitely too old and not worth buying nowadays, plus its very limited on hardware (no true multitouch, poor GPU and very small internal memory).
You should try Desire S if you afford or even a samsung galaxy S i9000, pretty old phone but still with monster hardware and kick ass screen.
Easy to root, and you can find many fantastic custom roms incuding gingerbread and sense 2.1

Any body got some info ?
of course will be, the question is when?
thats quick ....
Are we talking months or weeks untill 'droid 2.2 comes out
The internet is being a bit tight lipped.
The deisre is lovely, but not finished yet.
flash is nice, divx is vital and 720p video is something I wsan't expecting...
How are we going to get it when its released?
Will it be a user ROM style hardware flash through PC sync or will i just download a file to my phone, click go and 10minutes later my phone is amazing??
(i'm having fun wiping smug faces of iphone owning freinds as they ask what phone I have and i show them, then tell them I've got it for £15/mnth )
you'll get it here on XDA as usual. ready to be flashed on your device as any other ROM
2.2 aka Froyo: maybe next week!!!
I read this on engadget:
Engadget's post about Froyo
I don't really want to root my phone as it's I think really good as it is but I wouldn't say no to Froyo! especially since it apparently boosts performance a lot!
Quote form Engadget: "Update: How much faster is a Nexus One running Froyo? 450 percent faster, according to the Android Police. They claim to have a device running the as-yet-unreleased firmware that can perform over 37 million floating-point operations per second in the Linpack benchmark... compared to about 7 megaflops without. Oh yeeaaah."
As soon as a Froyo rom leaks, people will rip it apart and mod it to hell to get it to run on all kinds of devices. I'm sure we'll see Paul make a 2.2 Desire ROM, for example and now that HTC has released the Kernel source code, it should be easier to port existing quality roms like Cyanogenmod to the device. They'll all require root access to flash as they're unofficial roms. HTC will probably eventually port Froyo themselves, but that will probably take months.
Still, 2.2 hasn't shown up yet, so no dice. We'll have to wait until google I/O before that happens
it's going to be loooong till HTC themselves release it..but as soon as its out for nexus we'll see it here on xda in no time!
If you don't want to root & use a cooked ROM I wouldn't count on having it earlier than 6 months from now.
HTC needs to change Sense UI for Android 2.2 and looking at the Hero, which STILL does not have 2.1 I wouldn't expect it to be quick.

Months?? Seeing how things are going with the hero, I'd say they'll release it to the desire once the 2.3 is out. So better think of it as next year.
IMO Desire's owners are very important for HTC, since we are buying their flagship phones. I think they must keep us satisfied, if not, we will buy different phone next time. And I won't be happy if Nexus One owners will get 2.2 and we will not.
BTW isnt the evo 4g an Android 2.2 phone quz 2.1 didn't support 4g correct me if im wrong but if it is the update for the desire wont cost them so much time to port.

450% FASTER?! HOLYY SHIITT!!! I cant waaiiit!!!
Basically, do I get the Desire now and install Froyo when it's out, or do I wait for hardware designed to work with Froyo? Is the hardware in the Desire beefy enough?
+1 on that, i am on the same situation.
The Desire copes well with 2.1, it'll be plenty enough for Froyo. What might be a point to hold off from getting one now is the rather lacking availability in certain parts of the world right now. Plus, the Desire might come down a frew quid in price once the Supersonic and other 4G phones hit the market.
2.2 is designed for this current generation so yeah it's beefy enough, only problem is if you get an HTC handset, it will take longer to get 2.2 than a nexus one because HTC has to modify it.
If you have no problem with installing "unofficial" updates, you can get the Desire now and xda-developers will bring you the Froyo
If you don't want to do that, then the decision will be a tough one...

Of course... it just won't be an official release... that bothers some people... but I really like using the more customised roms xda developers release
Also... the Desire has a couple of benefits over the Nexus One... better screen (touch wise) + I prefer the hard buttons to the soft buttons on the N1
So sure you'll be waiting a little longer for a rom release... but you'll have a (slightly) nicer phone to use...

The Supersonic is the HTC Evo, but it and other 4G phones won't affect the price of the Desire because:
a) It is a CDMA device, so it's essentially a US only device.
b) It uses WiMAX for 4G - I don't expect any European cellular operators will use WiMAX for their 4G networks, they will use LTE. As far as I'm aware, the only European WiMAX deployments are for wireless internet solutions.
c) Since you use the term quid, I assume you are in the UK - currently none of the networks have given any firm dates for rolling out 4G networks. I wouldn't be at all surprised if we're looking at 2012+.

Dave

The Desire is a new phone and will easily handle Froyo. It's a great phone and I would recommend it 100% now. What's the point of waiting, the hardware is excellent and will remain so for a while. Buy it now and enjoy!

To my knowledge, 4G will not be widely available in Europe until 2011 or 2012.
@Vlad You can hold out till then if you want , but it depends on when 4G is gonna be available in your country.
I'm in a quandary and I wanted to find out where people are going after the Desire. For me it is pretty much the perfect phone, this is down to build quality and developer support.
I don't know if i can move to a phone that doesn't have as much support, what will i do without all my flashing?!
Anyway, the SGSII is plastic and the Sensation isn't perfect by any stretch of the imagination (it isn't the 'new Desire' in terms of changing the game).
What are others upgrading to? I've got 6 months on my contract, do i buy myself out and upgrade or wait it out?

What's the lead time on that? Are we expecting it this year? That will also depend on manufacturer for me too... can't deal with plastic phones!
This might be some sort of sacrilege but I would to see an Android device with the same design ethos as the iPhone 4.
HTC Sensation looks closest but I'm done with Sense.

Hi All,
I have the chance to get a Sensation tomorrow for free
I currently use the DHD and think the phone is awesome. Has anyone here had experience with both? I just wondered if the Sensation actually compares to the DHD or if it has any problems etc.
The main thing I can see immediately is the Sensation still doesn't have full root where as my DHD has boot unlocked and full root access so I swap my roms around quite often. Hopefully this will come soon to the sensation.
Anyway, if people who have already defected or played with both could let me know whether I'll feel impressed if I do get the Sensation please let me know your thoughts.
Thanks!
never mind,... only searched the DHD forums... just found this on the sensation forums.
same question sorry!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1170169
I think you should go for sensation as i dont think its gonna take too long for the developers on xda to root it. hope for the best
Moreover its better to have latest hardware to be future proof as the mobile hardware is improving drastically with cellphones having dual core processors and 1gb ram
For free? Seriously? Then why you're still asking this question? Just go for it already. You're the 2nd person i've met who gets sensation for free.
Dammit you're so lucky.

Sounds fairly unanimous to me, guess I'll have to pick it up
sensation definitely
I wouldn't go for the Sensation just yet, because I don't see any direct benefits from it, except for the higher resolution screen and the dual-core CPU. It is even a downgrade in some terms, since it's flash memory is smaller than DHD's. 1080p recording isn't a big of a deal, since the camera quality is just as bad as with all the other HTC devices. If you are after the fancy Sense 3.0 stuff, you can have it on your DHD with custom ROMs already. Plus, the high res is relatively new and there are still apps on the market you will have issues with. Thus, I would wait (and I will ) for the next flagship device, when the high res stuff is well established and there are no compatibility issues etc.
BUT, if you can get it for free and can live without root for some time, it's a different story, of course. Since its value is higher than that of DHD, I would probably go for it, but only to sell it later and get the next, proper flagship device
Funnily enough svyat that was my initial thought on the matter but you seem fairly certain this won't be HTC's flagship device. I don't really follow this stuff as much as I used to, do you know something I don't?? Do HTC have something else hidden away that they are going to sneak out anytime soon?
Cheers.

+1 for reasonable answers thank you in adv
If you have the budget for a Salsa, why don't you get a Nexus S?
Technically, both Salsa and Wildfire S *should* get CM7, but, seeing their respective forums, it seems the interest in these 2 devices are pretty low (Atleast at this point of time), and there's no root yet. (Alpharev X failed on the Wildfire S). However, as in every case, there is no time frame, because, not every HTC phone is the same. (High end phones like Sensation are already filled with Custom ROMs, but the 2 you listed dont have any)
Tbh, the wildfire community is pretty... bleh, although i kinda miss it a bit, i just sold it yesterday, but the amount of roms that were released... most were... pretty much just rooted stock roms with the same/similar features, or just themed.
Not saying all roms are like that, wildpuzzle, DK, the GB sense and the AOSP roms are the awesome ones with the actual 'devs' (these are the ones worth looking at and should be thanking them too )
What is your budget anyway? I'd prob get a Desire S or something, the Wildfire S is pretty much like the legend, and the samsung ace is... crap. , or get a higher end phone >=D

Nexus S is 20K.
http://bit.ly/qotXIi
(You can blindly trust Flipkart, have an awesome experience with them, and purchased my Wildfire from them back in Oct (Sadly for 15k )
Also, other stores like LetsBuy, Infibeam are also having it for ~20K.(Haven't purchased from them, so I cant state what experience you may have) Univercell's Price list is definitely way outdated.
Probably the only thing you will miss on the Nexus S is Sense, but then, you are after AOSP ROM's only, so Nexus being a Google phone, is a heaven for AOSP ROMs.
that's awesome news ... i am not a sense fan anyway ... well i will go for nexus s for sure
