[Noob] 131 error with Goldcards - Desire General

I have recently upgraded from an unbranded HTC Hero to the much faster HTC Desire. But it's branded with the Bloated Orange UK rubbish, such as traffic demos and games I'd never play. So after having to deal with installing a semi-working Win7 onto my mac, I dug out my old toshiba, installed Win7, and have attempted all evening to create a goldcard. Only managing to find 3 SDcard (stock 4gb, a nokia 256mb and a class 6 16GB), ive continously have attempted to get a generic stock rom on it. But I have ended up with the dreaded Error 131:Customer ID Error
I have followed guides on here, android forums, and the unlockr, but somewhere I'm fail. (User errors. Worst type of errors...)
I have image 1.15.61.10 installed at the moment, and can only get to about 25-30% on "Installing Signature"
So is anyone able to help me out a bit? Because I'm very confused. Is the goldcard.img needed to be placed on my SD card? or just the Hex?
I've got the Adb code, used the reversers recommended, getting the goldcard.img emailed to me (did recieve a goldcard.img.zip once =/), going into the HxT hex and altering the 0000000-0000170 lines on the SD card to match the ones in the goldcard.img. I have browsed through the phone with ASTRO, and have found both a MMC0 and MMC1 folder in mmc_host. But im lost, and would just like to have a normal phone thats not bloated on Oranges.
Any help would be appreciated, as I am thankful for the community here for help with my Hero, and I will be willing to donate for people's assistance.

Have u rooted?
If yes then flash Paul's custom rom

You need the CID from MMC1
If you want to install a Original HTC ROM (RUU) without any crap from Orange use my Tutorial...
Download: http://shipped-roms.com/shipped/Bra...00.28U_4.06.00.02_2_release_126984_signed.zip

3. Copy the PB99IMG.zip to the SD-Card Root
4. Boot your Phone with BACK+POWER
5. Go into "Bootloader" with POWER-Button
6. Wait and Accept the Flash with VOL-UP
7. Phone iss Rebooting into Fastboot again, do Step 5+6 again
8. Now your Phone is Flashing

@PsYDoX:
Thanks a lot!!! This is the only solution that worked for my O2 branded HTC Desire. The first Manual System Update Check offered me FroYo Thank you again!

A way of flashing the RUU rom extract

Because of my stupid mistakes of making my SD card failed the first time, I found a way to actually downgrade the system using HBoot mode even if you have a new HBoot system (i.e. Official Chinese version, Carrier Locked version, etc).
First thing to do, is to download the 2.73.405.5 official WWE RUU package (the exe);
Then, run that wizard, and while the wizard's program is running, search in your PC's %userprofile% folder, and look for "rom.zip"
Rename that rom.zip to HEROIMG.zip.
Put that file into your MicroSD card's root folder. Do not modify its contents.
put that SD card into your phone.
While the card is in, hboot the device (vol down + power).
it will pop up the HBOOT mode of the device. It will now check for a few files if they exist on your SD card. (HERODIAG.zip, etc)
in the last check, it will look for HEROIMG.zip, and tries to load it. Once the loading bar is complete on the top right side of the device, it will ask you to press home to continue the upgrade, or press other key to escape it. (i am not 100% sure if those are the keys, but you can read english so figure that part out).
Once the flashing is done (remember, this method will wipe everything. including radio, recovery, system, data, cache), you will now have a complete original ROM on your system. From there, use InstantRoot or any other rooting exploit, to root your device, put Cyanogen's recovery there, and start upgrading into custom roms!
Let me know if this method works or not. it worked on 3 of my friend's HTCs.
/* p.s. however i still have my unresolved issue about the SD card slot and USB device not recognized issue. */
Nope, I tried that before and it fails the CID check.
Guiness in a can? BRILLIANT!
yea, everyone has been jumping through their butts trying to figure out how to make goldcards and bypasses... why not just use hboot like htc probally uses it? Duh! Thanks for this!
edit..... oh snap....
does not work for me!
Once the loading bar is complete on the top right side of the device
go back to hboot...
and nothing to do
this won't work because the SPL is still checking the CID of the rom.zip you renamed to HEROIMG
for some people the flash will work, but thats because they have a hero with a CID thats in the range of the cid numbers (open the .zip file and check the android-info.txt to see the list.
changing topic is this is confusing people
nice try though
Otiginal IMG
Confirm ...works for me.After rooting...... and flashing couple images i try reflash back original rom - official ruu not want work ...stop on bootloader .....extracted rom not be a flashable trough sd card and amon ra loader....this way work like charm.Thnx.

Thank you, you are the man!
Thank you so much, i was about to eat my phone. it is htc hero and it worked. thank you so much...
since we have this thread i can ask as well...
is HEROIMG.ZIP signed, or why wouldn't one just alter the CID values in android-info.txt?

I believe it is signed using HTC's own personal keys, preventing us changing the RUU extract.

Might be worth a test to do self signed ?

It worked perfectly! Cannot thank you enough.

been looking for this for nearly a week.
got my wife a new phone and want to store it original, but couldnt get back to stock, all cid fails.

Stuck at step2-windows.bat rooting my Desire

I'm attempting to root my HTC Desire, but having some problems.
I am following the guide here: theunlockr .com /2010/06/07/how-to-root-the-htc-desire/ but I haven't made a goldcard because my device is unbranded. Perhaps this is where I went wrong?
Everything seemed to be going fine until: 7. Now on the computer double click the “step2-windows.bat” file and wait for it to finish.
The command prompt flashes briefly, but I took a screenshot and the error was 'device not found'
I'm really not sure what to do at this point..
Thanks!

Have you got HTC Sync installed? This is not a goldcard error as that would be Custom ID Error
Did step 1 complete correctly?
There is no step 2 anymore on modaco's method
try following this guide as it is the original post by Paul and all others are just copy/paste's (or bad rewritten) guides
I do have HTC Sync installed, yes.
Step1 did appear to complete correctly, but at one point I spotted the word FAILED in command prompt, but they everything continued apparently at normal.
My phone is currently at the recovery screen with the ! is it safe to pull the battery? It isn't responding to the power button.
The FAILED error was something like.. 42 device id check fail
Yeah if you are at the red triangle then you can pull the battery..
I'd use the guide on modaco. It's foolproof and very easy to follow.
Yes, it's safe to pull out battery.
I had the same problem with step 2, then I've found out the modaco method without step 2, and it worked out fine.
I would do the rooting under Linux!I had enough trouble with it under windows (maybe because of x64).
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
reason for "device not found" is missing drivers for bootloader mode.
believe me, its much more easier to root your device under Linux liveCD, than cheating with drivers for windows.
good luck
The riskfree method on modaco works perfectly. I unrooted by using a stock ruu earlier to remove unrevoked, and use the riskfree method to root again. It's easy and painless on win7 64bit.
I think the step one didn't complete properly for the OP anyway as he said he seen an error at that stage.
Ok, using the riskfree modaco method now. Everything fine until installing update from SD card. E: failed to verify whole-file signature. Esignature verification failed. Installation aborted.
Is this due to not using a goldcard? I tried to make one but it kept saying it the card was damaged and needed formatting each time.
Edit. also the email I get in the goldcard creation process has the subject 'Your generated G1 goldcard' I'm not sure why it says G1? but the gold card process doesn't work and says I need to format the disk for it to be usable.
In the first posts you said your device is unbranded. So why did you made a goldcard? It's not necessary
Also make sure to use the files as you can download in the Modaco thread I posted in post #5
I think I must have misunderstood what unbranded meant. Or maybe it was just a coincidence, but it worked once I used the goldcard.
The phone came from T Mobile, but lacks and T Mobile branding on the case or any T Mobile apps.
Then it's proberly branded, you can verify by the ROM version (search the forum for it). I don't think it can harm to use a goldcard with a non-branded device anyway (correct me if i'm wrong).
Also try to download the files from the Modaco forum again (and don't rename any files)
If that doesn't work, take a look at these search results. I can remember I had the same problem as you have, dunno exactly what solved it, but these search results def. helped me

[Q] Confused and Overwhelmed. After some Clarity!

Hello!
I recently purchased a HTC Desire HD through a carrier in Australia after being a nokia dumbphone owner for my "connected life". I have done some reading into the Custom ROM scene and I am loving the potential benefits and modifications that are possible with them, however being new to Android, new to Smartphones and new to Custom Roms I am to say the least a little confused.
I decided this carrier added bloatware just has to go and after a little reading I like the idea of LeeDrOiD HD v1.2.
I have attempted to follow the instructions in the Leedroid HD thread.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=842802
Which tells me i Need to flash.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=842819
Which in turn tells "You will need the ENG HBOOT installed on your device to flash this recovery!"
and of course I could not find any details on what ENG HBOOT is let alone how to install it.
How deep does the rabbit hole go Alice? The multiple tears are becoming confusing and complicated and I am wondering if this is just a LeeDroid thing, or are these steps necessary for all custom roms? Or just the Desire HD. I am fairly confident with the safety of replacing a rom but the more steps by more people are adding uncertainty in the safety of the whole procedure and of course raising the probability of an under informed and maybe slightly reckless newby to brick a perfectly acceptable phone.
Is anyone able to reccomend a resource to better acquaint a Newby with this new territory? Is thier a more comprehensive guide to installing LeeDroid or "Rom-ing" an android phone.
Hi,
Give me a few minutes to pull together a few guides for you.
This Guide with Video is very helpful at performing all the little tasks that allow you to flash custom ROMs.
In short the ENG HBOOT allows the flashing of an unsigned recovery "Clockwork Mod", which then allows you to flash custom ROMs. Flashing the ENG HBOOT is a one time process, once you have done it there is no need to do it again.
Just a few questions,
1). Do you have a Stock HTC Unbranded & Unlocked ROM or a Carrier Branded ROM?
2). Have you rooted you DHD yet?
This is the way I personally went about the whole process, its a guide that zexbig posted and can be found HERE
Summary:
1) Download Paul's Visionary+ tool (I have used version r12) (google removed this app from market) so You will have to download it from Paul's website.
This tools enables root and removes new HTC protection.
2) Install engineering version of HBOOT to get S-Off (HTC bootloader, something like BIOS for Your PC)
This step is optional and it's not required in order to flash custom ROM's on Your DHD but gives You more freedom with Your device.
3) Install custom recovery image (recovery is special program which is invoked from HBOOT
in order to flash ROM onto Your device.
Detailed description:
1) Download Paul's Visionary+ tool
1.1) Click here to download http://android.modaco.com/content/ht...ne-click-root/ or download it from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/atta...3&d=1290501865
1.2) Install Visionary+ on Your DHD
1.3) Run it, enable "Set system r/w after root
1.4) Click "Temproot Now!" - Wait until it's finished
1.5) Click Attempt Permroot Now!
1.6) DHD automatically reboot's
To test that everything went fine download from market application "terminal emulator"
run it, type su
If You get after that sign # it mean's that everything went fine.
Time for next step!
2) Install engineering version of HBOOT to get S-Off
2.1) Download sfjuocekr DHD script for flashing HBOOT from here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=835746
2.2) Unzip it and copy it to Your SDCard (It's important that You have on Your SDCard root directory with name DHD and all files inside this directory.
(I have run into the strange problem for which I'm not sure is it problem with my PC or DHD, each time when I connected my DHD via USB cable my SDCard was automatically mounted as Disk Drive instead of just being in "Charge only" mode. I resolved this by removing back cover and ejecting SDCard and inserting it again while phone was operational, which is very unsafe thing to do!).
2.3) Run Terminal Emulator
2.4) Type su
2.5) Type "sh /sdcard/DHD/check
(Please be aware that You have to type "sh" in front of command)
2.6) If everything went OK type
sh /sdcard/DHD/backup
2.7) If this also went OK proceed with
sh /sdcard/DHD/hboot
This command will install engineering hboot which have S-Off turned off.
3) Install custom recovery image
3.1) Since ROM manager now officially support's Desire HD, we will use it to download and install custom clockwork image.
3.2) Run android market app on Your DHD and download and install ROM Manager app from market.
3.3) Download and install ROM manager.
3.4) Run ROM manager and select first option (Flash ClockWorkMod Recovery).
3.5) Wait until ROM Manager say's that installation went successfully (Current version of ClockWorkMod is 2.5.1.3)
3.6) After installation tap in Rom manager option Reboot into Recovery to test that everything went well.
3.7) DHD should reboot in clockwork recovery manager.

-Visionary is now v14+, not 12 as posted.
If you have any problems, just let us know.
Quick Response thanks!
It is unfortunatly a Carrier Branded rom. Full of widgets that are just links to webpages. What is even worse is I bought my phone through a company who leases lines off the carrier so because I am technically not with the carrier I can't use their aps even if i wanted to.
I believe I have temp rooted it so far. I have downloaded VISIONary +
Epic.. Thank you kindly. I am in the process.
I don't understand why carriers have to ruin the whole "Android Experience" by bundling awful apps that nobody wants, otherwise they would of downloaded them themselves.
The last guide I posted is the one I used. Once you have followed all of the steps then your in a position to flash a custom ROM. If you are planning to overclock or underclock then you will also need to find a suitable "Kernel" to flash with your ROM. Most ROMs do come complete with a custom kernel but that may not be the best for your particular needs.
Once bit of advice. Always, always a backup of your ROM before you flash anything else.
Flashing custom ROMs is easy once the above steps are complete.
1). Download your chosen ROM.
1a). Optional Download your chosen Kernel.
2). Transfer ROM (+ Kernel) to your SD Card, place in the root of the card.
3). Boot into Recovery. Power off (Ensure HTC Fast Boot is disabled), Power on whilst holding VOL DOWN, using volume keys select Recovery, press power to enter.
4). Create Backup, backup and restore > backup.
5). Wipe All Data including cache
6). Install .zip from SD Card, Select the correct ROM zip and confirm.
7). Optional, repeat with Kernel, if necessary.
8). Reboot.
9). Bask in glory, you have conquered your smartphone.
Again, if you want more info feel free to ask. We all had to learn once, or twice.
For Clarification on HBOOT loading.
I do want to be viewing the Android device as a disk drive?
Secondly Do I create a folder on the SD card in the root directory called DHD and then drop the 3 files contained in the Zip file into that folder?
Example
Root Directory
>.data
>Alarms
>Android
>bugreports
>DCIM
>DHD --Newly created folder
>>DHD-dumb --dragged and dropped
>>DHD-smart --dragged and dropped
RTFM.txt --dragged and dropped
>downloads
etc..
Yes you do want to view it as a disk drive.
You are also correct with the folders.
SDCard/DHD/ - place files here -
Ok my description failed.
Instead of the folders listed above
">>DHD-dumb --dragged and dropped
>>DHD-smart --dragged and dropped
RTFM.txt --dragged and dropped"
should I be taking the contents of (smart or dumb?) and placing that in the DHD created directory?
obviously the commands in the terminal dont correspond to having the files in a sub folder. I appologise for you having to answer obvious questions however I am a little weary of bricking.
I'd rather you post a question and get it answered before you post a problem and have an expensive paperweight.
Take the "DHD-smart" folder from wherever you extracted it, place that on your SD Card, then rename that folder to just "DHD".
Excellent. All Is working as planned. I'm in the process of D/L ing Leedroid rom.
Thanks for your help again.
I'll post back once I have things up and rolling.
No problem at all.
Just remember to make a backup from within "Recovery", it will save you one day.
I appologise I forgot to Post back.
Everything is running sweetly now, absolutley no bugs with the Root or new LeeRoid rom.
Thanks again for your help.

[Q] downgrade from 1.75 to 1.32 (CID incorrect)

hi,
i want to root my phone, but i've been told to downgrade.
my software version is 1.75.
my phone is quite new, 2-3 weeks ago.
i tried all the methods and i downloaded PD98IMG.zip(1.32 firmware).
after entering the Bootloader, and it checks the zip file, at the end it says::
CID incorrect!
Update Fail!
after checking online, people said that if its branded, it wont work, unless you use a goldcard.
when opening my phone, it brings a Virgin Media logo (from london, uk), so im guessing its branded.
so i formated my 8GB sd card, and installed the goldcard, yet the message still appears!!!
CID incorrect!
Update Fail!
did i do something wrong?
does the type of sd card i have effect a goldcard?, because i think i have a rubbish 8GB sd card, since the original sd card didnt come with the phone when i got it!
HBOOT-0.85.0018
Dec 17 2010, 00:29:52
is there something more i should do? or is there a way to root the phone with 1.75?
ps: im new to android phones, but have a little background in linux.
Did you use mmc2 while making the card?
Only MMC1 and MMC0 are available...
and MMC1 which is the default one didnt work, but MMC0 did.
i used a better sd card, -- transcend, and with this, after making it a gold card, and putting the zip file on it, the bootloader wouldnt recognize any image
If it does not work, it is not better
Only mmc0 and mmc1 are available?? Do not use disk drive mode, and use mmc2. That is the only one that will work.
I'm using goldcard tool v0.0.5, it only has mmc1 and mmc0
I took it from this website- android.monaco.com/content/software/308798/pc-application-goldcardtool/
And yea, I was on HTC Sync mode, not disk drive.
I'm tried this method for downgrading - igyaan.in/2011/01/how-to-root-desire-hd-included-downgrade-from-1-72-405-3-to-1-32
After that didn't work, I tried this - androidadvices.com/how-to-downgrade-htc-desire-hd-to-1-32-405-6-ota-firmware/
ok, so, i found goldcard helper from someone who uploaded it on a forum.
(can't get it from market, because market wont open, .., one of the reasons why i want to root).
i used mmc2, reversed it, and got the img.
but still, same message!!!
is there something im doing wrong?
by letting android put stuff on the card, does it lose its 'goldcard' powers?
honestly...why is this happening
please help!!!
Use my downgrade guide, it works, it is the original. It is a sticky in the DHD android dev subforum.
ummm, and wheres the link?
oh, and could you explain whats S-OFF and Radio-OFF i've beens seeing it everywhere when it comes to rooting.
is it a must, and what exactly does it do?
yay!!, it worked!!
what i did wrong was,,, on the goldcard helper, i pessed 'menu' and 'copy', and although it said reversed CID copied, it copied the mmc1 CID, not the MMC2
so i jotted down the MMC2 and got an img, and it worked!
thanks for your help!!!
but can u still answer my question above?, the s-off and radio off?

[Q] Cannot Downgrade Hboot 1.01.0002 to 1.01.0001

Hello,
I'm new to the forums, and have only just recently got a HTC Wildfire A3333 running 2.2.1.
I have tried to use " [GUIDE] Downgrade to HTC Froyo WWE for AlphaRevX (HBOOT 1.01.0001) " to downgrade the h boot as to start to gain root.
But when I have followed the instructions, it appears to complete ok, but when I reboot in to the system menu, it still shows as .002 hboot and does not install the rom supplied.
any help would be great
EDIT: IT TOLD ME I HAD SUCCESSFULLY CREATED GOLD CARD
GlennBrownie
same goes with me mate, i got the gold card and then i insert it, it all goes but when the cmd closes it still shows hboot 1.01.002
This happened to me on a Telstra wildfire (A3335). if you make it so the CMD window doesn’t close (I used an alternative shell) you will see that it actually gets some error before closing, which is why it doesn’t actually change the hboot.
I must have done it 20 times before I got it to work. I can't remember what I did differently the time I made it work, but it was something to do with which usb mode the phone was in for each step, and when I decided to change it from one mode to the other. Basically trying to make it so the phone wouldn’t say “preparing SD card” after I had made the goldcard.
Worst part was when I finally downgraded my Hboot, alphrev X still wouldn’t work for me. Continued to get the error of “Retrieving Caroline from certain doom...” and "mtd: not writing bad block at 0x00000000" I've since given up..
okays, thanks for the help, ill try that, but with alpharevx the problem they are tring to fix is the part where you need to restart into fastboot the second time, so in this case, ill give that a try. the thing is that im useing windows 7 enterprise, i have the hboot drivers all installed and etc, i used the intructions given to me and everyone else where you have to make the gold card. in that intruction it stated to put the sd card into the usb or sd port, the thing i did was switch my phone to mount the SD card and create it via there, i think the part where we all went wrong is unmounted it after we finished making the sd card. so try that, and with your problem i tghink you need to try and run the program in ADMIN mode (right click and run as admin) and then try and get the HBOOT drivers from Unrevoked installed. give that a try and hope it all works out
cheers
Well I managed to get step2.bat to run in a cmd so that it stayed open,
it came up with "FAILED <remote: 42 custom id check fail>".
when HTC booted in to bootloader it still showed same h.boot (.0002)
Please see attached screenshot.

my question is, when i run alpharevx, it asks me for the beta key, note that it doesnt show my device name or anything like how i did it before i downgraded, any ideas why? and does anyone have a beta key for me to use? because the one i got with my phone when i entered it in said it was incorrect, when before before i downgraded it worked perfectly fine (except the rotting part).
what Beta key, I dont recall one?
To get a new beta key just follow this link, click download and then enter your phone's SN.

my question is, when i run alpharevx, it asks me for the beta key, note that it doesnt show my device name or anything like how i did it before i downgraded, any ideas why? and does anyone have a beta key for me to use? because the one i got with my phone when i entered it in said it was incorrect, when before before i downgraded it worked perfectly fine (except the rotting part).

If it doesn’t show your device properly just reboot your phone. Basically every time the program fails it won’t show your device properly until you reboot again (This will also fix the issue where it thinks you have the wrong beta key). People suggesting to go get a new beta key have no idea. Have they not noticed that it doesn’t matter which HBoot version you select on the site you still get the same key based on your serial number.
yes, i used mt wildfire SN and i use the code it gives me still getting the same problem,

Well I managed to get step2.bat to run in a cmd so that it stayed open,
it came up with "FAILED <remote: 42 custom id check fail>".
when HTC booted in to bootloader it still showed same h.boot (.0002)
Please see attached screenshot.

done it twice and it still come up with success message?
even did it through hex editor....
I tried to do it again to show screenshots.
firstly, I ran step one and it says "cannot stat" followed by file name and says "no such file or directory". see image1.jpg
I then checked the buzzdowngrade folder, and all files are there. see image4.jpg
I then attempted the goldcard, and I clicked get cid, and it loaded a CID with a lot of 0's in it so I dont think its showing correct CID, possibly hiding real CID?

when I clicked patch MMC, it came up with an error message. see image3.jpg
Have you installed the HTC driver 3.0.0.007. If not, install it first before even going with step1.
And regarding step2, creating a working gold card is important. If you still get custom id errors, try with a different memory card. And run the gold card tool as administrator. And in that you will see mmc0 and mmc1 options. Try creating with the other if one fails.

Just downgraded and i think i know what is the problem.
You have to change the connection status from charge only to Mass storage
then click refresh and the memory card will be available.
HTC MMC : select you sd card.
And now patch.
right, got an update.
managed to succeed with the dmisc.img and others that failed - thanks to Mattyyey, cheers Matt
We then got to flashing the rom and it failed, any suggestions?
we recreated the gold card and formated the microSD card and patched and it told us that it had succeeded.
please see screenshot.

its probably your fake SD card! I was able to run the commands in step 1 and 2 from the cmd, all but the final ROM flash. I think after we create it we should confirm its been put on the SD card via hex workshop.... I did think of this last night but I was getting tired and you dont have it installed. I suspect its just the goldcard isn't done, everything else works when typed manually into cmd.
Unless anyone else has another reason for the custom ID check failing?
MATTYYEY was correct, it was due to fake microSD card, completed gold card with authentic SD card and it worked.
Sent from my HTC Wildfire android 2.3.4 Cyanogen V7.1 ROM using XDA App, GREAT rom running perfect.
