Hi. I open beebplayer and listen to radio 1. Then press pause so the music stops. Press home but still has beebplayer in the toolbar. I reboot the phone which kills it. Is there a way of just closing it?

get "advanced task killer" from the app market. use that to kill it when your done with it.
Guys, I know there are a lot of anecdotal claims that background tasks are killing your battery or slowing down your phone, but I assure you, in reality, this perception is false.
I too got HORRIBLE battery life when I first got my Desire, I instantly installed a task killer, which in turn instantly introduced all manner of instability. I use the phone as normal (which means for the first week I played with it incessantly, killing all juice by mid-day) but once it became my phone, not a new toy, and the novelty wore off I'm getting well over a day now. I can use it all day normally, go home, sleep wake up and it's still got a third of a bar of battery left//enough to get to work and hook it to my USB drive on my laptop.
The task is idle, it's sitting there in an unused slot of memory. If that slot is needed it will be gracefully shut down...but I doubt you'll ever be able to use that much memory to ever get there.
[EDIT] Just to qualify that, this is all with Spotify constantly "running" in the background (the Spotify icon is in the taskbar until you manually shut it down from within the app) It does not seem to have any baring on speed or battery life.

I assume it would be one of the two main complaints or worries people have with their Android phones that prompted the query. You're either worried it's draining your battery or you're worried it's slowing down other processes. The third fear would be it's using data, but if he's turned off the feed that's not likely. Beebplayer doesn't buffer life feeds like that.
If none of the above are his fears then it's a non issue.
OP has fine battery life. I just don't like the beeb icon staying in my toolbar until I reboot. Are you saying it will disappear after some hours?

My beebplayer doesn't act like that. If I play radio 1, wait till it connects, pause it and then press home, it closes and the icon disappears from the notification bar.

This is my experience too. Are you running the latest version? The icon only stays for me if the radio is still playing.

I can confirm that I'm on the latest version of Beebplayer (the very last it seems! ), and occasionally it does leave behind the notification when the radio is paused.

Same for me - it isn't really a pause, it's "Stopped" and this is what shows on the notification as well.

Guys,
We all know about the "magical 4636 menu" which provides a lot of interesting information as well as battery usage history. Now, talking about Battery, there is a submenu which is called "partial wake usage". I have googled a lot (both on XDA and beyond) and still could not find any exact explanation on what _exactly_ that thing was
Everyone is writing smth like "well, if you see some app there, that means that it doesn't let your Desire to sleep... err... "completely".. but the phone is not "fully" awake either.. err.. yeah..."
So, if someone could clarify this, I would be very grateful. What interests me exactly is:
- if I see (for example) MortPlayer app on top of the "partial wake usage" list - does that mean that the app was ACTIVELY running in background even when the display was off?
- if yes, does that mean that my device consumed just as much power as if it was awake, "minus" the energy consumed by OLED screen?
- so, "partial wake" mode itself - how is that defined? Does "partial-wake" equal "fully-actively-running-device-but-the-screen-does-not-consume-power"?
- when listening to mp3 (with the screen off) - is that "partial wake"?
Thanks in advance.
erm.. anyone?...
Maybe this help!
Hi mate,
I'm no expert on Android or anything but will share what I thought partial wake option shows from my own experience.
I was using Seven to get my hotmail push to my Desire and I was getting very poor battery life from it.
when I checked via the battery history I had to select from the top drop down list "partial wake usage" and "since last unplug" from second drop list.
and it clearly showed 70% of my battery was getting used up by seven. so I uninstalled it right away.
after that now I'm getting almost 2 days worth of battery life while on the other hand before I was running out of battery before even 18 hours.
seven was a beta software and unapproved as well, so I guess it will cause the problem.
So basically the partial wake usage menu shows you what app you or the system running even when your display is off.
now the reason I think it shows other app on the list bcoz of Android's nature of always connected to net. like Android system, maps, facebook and stuff.
which keeps updating behind if you run them once after you unplugged and got out of them by pressing home button.
Also remember by the second menu gives you option to select either "since last unplugged" or "total since boot" or "total in all time" so obviously a lot off app going to show up on the list.
and yes playing mp3 with screen shut is consider partial wake usage as my cube player shows up on list.
PARTIAL_WAKE_LOCK means that the CPU will continue running in sleep mode only the Screen and the Keyboard will powerd off
FROM ANDROID API-DOC:
*If you hold a partial wakelock, the CPU will continue to run, irrespective of any timers and even after the user presses the power button. In all other wakelocks, the CPU will run, but the user can still put the device to sleep using the power button.
wake-locks are needed for some apps who have timers or counters in backround etc. 'cause without the cpu the timer will not work
http://developer.android.com/reference/android/os/PowerManager.html
Not recommended to keep CPU running unless you really need it - kills power efficiency by stopping CPU sleep modes.
I have a notification widget on the task bar to access the Testing menu since the first week which allows all those stats and more. I found about a week back that the application WorldWideTime had 99% battery usage as partial wake since the last unplug with over 6hours devoted to it and the next highest being Android at 2s of use. I rarely used the app -> Uninstalled.

Thank you for your replies!
I have noticed that after listening to mp3 using MortPlayer (the screen is off, device in pocket ) it appears on the partial_wake_usage list. So, this means that when I am listening to mp3 via MortPlayer, the CPU stil runs as if my Desire was fully awake.
Does anyone know how that is with the original music player?
I can't answer your specific question, but any music player running when the screen is off must be using an awake lock to keep the CPU running. Same as any browser/application which is downloading content. Without the CPU running, such tasks won't be possible. There is power saving with a partial lock, as other unused hardware is put to sleep.

I am sad to report this but the awesome weather app J

I use Palmary, without the widget, as my primary weather app. I have it set to manual refresh and I have no problems at all. Unsurprisingly.

I just uninstalled Seven...still in beta btw. I was using it to sync Hotmail since it syncs junk mail as well. Anyway, only found out about this wake lock stuff. Went into spare parts and saw that Seven was taking about 70% also. Charging now...hopefully this will solve my battery issues...tried everything else.
I seem to have a problem with co pilot where it continues to run even after I exit it. However the app is not visible in task manager. when I go to battery use co pilot its the number one user when in fact the app isn't even running. Does anyone else have this problem?
Did you disable GPs after using Co pilot ?
Yes I have. In order to fully close it I have to reboot the phone otherwise it continues to eat away at my battery.

It's closed. When im done with the app I click 'Quit CoPilot'. Weird, seems it works fine for some, but not others.
Same here, closed it, its defo not running, yet the about battery screen says its eating away at the power. The battery history screen (*#*#4636#*#*) says its sensor usage, so I guess its a GPS thing, but don't know why its accessing GPS when off. Im running oldish firmware so that might have something to do with it as the wifi is forever turning on & off, might be related.
odd, but when i close copilot it closes
make sure you close and hot hide away
when it closed it doesn't eat battery
besides it's not copilot that eats battery, it's the GPS
as long as the GPS is off even if copilot is on, it will not consume battery
Are you people closing it from within CoPilot itself? Or by pressing the back button on the phone...
Running copilot for quite a while already but never noticed this.
i use the EXIT button inside copilot itself
else it just goes into hiding, but still active
Go to "Settings", "Applications", "manage applications", "running". See if it shows up in there. If not then it is not running and is being mis-reported.
BTW there is an update today.
I always exit from the exit menu within copilot and as far as I can tell its closed, but the battery statistics say its using gps, and therefore some battery, although doesn't seem to have gps active all the time. Might be a firmware bug as copilot wont always turn on gps, it'll just say no lock and the gps icon on the notification bar won't come on until I turn gps off and on again through the settings menu. Could be the opposite of that happening when you exit and gps isn't turned off correctly? Should get round to flashing newer firmware so I can turn it off and on from the notification bar but running ubuntu so not got kies working
Edit: Oops didnt really read the 1st post, i thought battery drain while using copilot...
(anyways below might be useful to some )
i did get massive battery drainage using Copilot, until i changed the map color mode to always night
White on Amoled drains ya battery ive tested this with the phone charging on the car and still drained when on day colors and now on night it stays charged and slowly increases %
test it...
good idea, perhaps i should change mine to always night as well

I had this problem also. i installed Copilot and noticed my phone battery was lasting at most a day all of a sudden i checked battery use in "About Phone" settings and copilot was the #1 user. i tried checking task manager but didnt show up, i checked that i didnt minimise it but i hadnt, i also checked that i quit the app from inside copilot not just hit the back button and i also checked my GPS was off but still my battery drained very quickly. I ended up uninstalling it since i have uninstalled my battery is back to normal. after checking that i could not get a refund i reinstalled it again today to see if it still happened or if there is a way i could fix it. So far the problem has not occured. But i make sure that exit copliot from the app itself and then i check task manager make sure it is not running in the background and i also clear memory to make sure everything is back to idle. since i have done this after each use i have not seen the problem re-occur. if it does come back i will have to uninstall again dont want to have to have my phone on charge all the time!!
random question, what map version are you guys using for copilot? because i heard they dont have an update for 2010, last time i tried they only had 2009 North America maps

I see that when a task killer stops a program (cityid, stocks, etc) I can look right back in there and see it running again and in a minute the page is full again of the same apps that I just killed. Even with autokill on they start while the screen is off. I want to know if anyone has figured out what file or service keeps starting these and if there is an edit to it to tell them to quit it ? I am not comfortable with a device that I do not have control of stuff that starts and goes online by itself. Thanks.

If you're not comfortable with a device you do not have full control of, looks like rooting is for you
Seriously though, rooting your device is the ONLY way to remove City ID, Stocks, etc. from your device. HOWEVER.
You should probably break yourself of the task killer habit. Lifehacker explains it all here: http://lifehacker.com/5650894/andro...ed-what-they-do-and-why-you-shouldnt-use-them.
In a nutshell, Android is actually really good at preserving memory, and killing apps that will keep popping up drains battery faster. The reason they keep popping up is Android is trying to predict what you're going to use next based on what you just did (or something like that), so potentially anything you have installed that is there on startup will hit that list.
I tried using Watchdog as the article said, but honestly I found in the end I just wanted more control. unrevoked 3.21 and several ROM tries later I'm happy with where I'm at
EDIT: I see by your sig that you have rooted your Dinc.. therefore, it's a very simple process if you want to get rid of the app entirely. If you want to leave it installed, you're not going to find a solution to the constant opening - Android is what Android is.
Most of the apps you see in the task list are not active. They're just loaded in memory so they can launch faster when you need them.
Like the previous poster pointed out, task killers are counter productive. You just get a continuous cycle with the app launching and being killed. Launching again and being killed again. And on and on.
Best just to leave android alone to do what it was designed to do.
If you still feel the need to be more in control use app autostarts. It allows you to block the initial app launch and block based on events.

Mostly what I want to do is,,,,
,,,To stop applications that come on by themselves and log in even when you set in their settings to not do it, like Skype. I do use Skype to do a calll with a bunch of friends from school, but I want to start it when I want to use it, I am all the time having skype calls come in when I have not even launched the app. I figure that if it is listening for a call then it is useing power needlessly. I do not want to have to log out every time I want it to stop, I just want to close it and it behave and stop useing power. Many apps do that and I think it is a major reason for low battery life. My battery will not hold up a full shift at work, but if I kill the GPS and the 3G the thing has been up for 22 hours and is still at 66% and I have talked for over 2 hours today on the phone, so I think that if more control is gained over app behaviour then we can be happier with our batteries ;-)

You hit the nail on the head there. It's not the apps killing your battery, it's the 3g and gps.
I leave my wifi on all the time but have it set to disconnect if the phone is idle for 15 min. Bluetooth, gps, and 3g are always turned off except when I need them.

Hello
I was not able to find, in all the posts about battery drain, someone with the same problem as I have.
I have should have attached my phone info, some battery usage and my highest RECORDED battery temperature.
Yes, recorded, because I'm sure I got a higher one at least once.
So, my phone is always kind of hot when it's turned off in my pocket, not under 35C.
When I use it normally, like for example while wrighting this thread, it heats up to about 40-45C
And when I use it to play games or watch videos, it goes to 45-50C and maybe higher, to a point where I can't even hold it anymore.
And I recently realized that the batrery drains really fast. I'm not sure if this was a problem before I updated to Android 5.0 but I do not think so.
What do you think I should do?
Thank you in advance and sorry for any typos!
I'd imagine part of the battery drain has to do with the phone being "awake" pretty much the entire time, even when your screen was off.

Thank you, and how do I fix that?
I only know 2 causes that would keep the device awake. (probably much more)
1) Some funky app that keeps on running while screen is off. For example a game that you exit via Home button will cause that. Not all games, but some.
2) Google sync failing. I get that a lot when I travel to China. Since Google is blocked there it would keep syncing indefinitely.
thats all I know, hope it helps

Thank you for your help, but I do not think that's the issue as I never close any app without pressing "back" until it's closed and then closing it again in the "recent apps" menu. As for Google, it last synced a minute ago.

Looking at your google play services. That's quite a bit of usage... Should look into it. Also I know there are apps out there that can better isolate the culprit, but I haven't really looked into it since I haven't had much battery issue for the longest time. Hopefully someone with better knowledge of the situation can help. I'll start by clearing data on the google play stuff.

Yesterday during my sleep time in sleep mode my watch used 75% of the battery today in 3hours I'm down 25% any ideas ?
I checked my watch 51% of the battery on the music app.. I don't have music on my watch.... anyone can help me explain that ?

This works one time, hitting pause and play again resets it on my device.
Manually having to turn off music control every time you hit play is not ideal for my use. Apparently another Samsung watch had the same problem a year or two ago and was only resolved with an update.
