I am currently using MCR r2 ROM. All is fine, but I don't like HTC's phone app. Is it possible to put the stock phone app from the Nexus?
Thanks
Please ask this kinds of questions in the general area, this has very few to do with development and we should keep this as a productive space.
In theory you could push the contacts apk, I read somewhere in this forum that someone did that.

I was thinking about this at work tonight. I don't know how well received this topic with be either. The purpose of this topic is to consolidate questions from users that are looking for an app that fits their need with suggestions from other people. I know that one person could not possibly know all the apps and games out there. Maybe you could suggest something you have seen, used, or are using now with fellow users that can't seem to find an app that does what they want to accomplish. This does not mean that if someone suggests something, that they have to teach someone how to use the program too (unless they don't mind helping them get set up or warning them about possible snafus). Sometimes there are apps that aren't in the market but on a website somewhere, and are great to have. For example, Music Junk, is a good prog to dl music (cough, cough). Google music junk android and I'm sure you will find the dev's site.
Anyways, I don't know how well of an idea this is but at least it's an attempt to help others out. I will be watching this thread as long as it stays on the first page or two of this section.
There was an app called paul's app of the day, lots of people use it, paul must be a popular guy.. idk.. looks like he's from Madaco forums.. but it did have some apps that we all know already.. but one or two that I never thought to check out. i did remove it after a week or so.. don't like to have too many apps if I don't use them.
AppBrain will suggest stuff based off what you have installed and what other users have installed in comparison to you. If I have x, Y, and Z and you have X and Y it will suggest Z.
FWIW - Paul O'Brien is the founder of MODACO...I follow him on twitter - he's like a Cyanogen in the UK. was big into G1 dev, I think he supports several devices, and did support the Hero when we first started getting roms on it.
If you have any questions that may be development related please post them in here instead of making a new thread. Me and hopefully others will try to answer your question to the best of your abilities. Plus it saves me from moving a few hundred threads a day
Thanks!

Where is the best place to learn Linux Kernel Development, or more specifically, Android Kernel Development (if there's any major differences in the two).
I have a slight Computer Science background from being self-taught in basic C programs, an understanding for Object Oriented Programming, and also learning Java throughout school.
I've heard that http://kernelnewbies.org/ is good as well as the standard www.kernel.com website to grab the latest kernel and start tinkering.

Well im not sure of your question, but you can set profiles in SetCPU so that when your screen goes off it can slow the clock down
[Q] Is the G2 capable of Screen Sharing/DLNA
I love my G2, but one feature that I wish the it incorporated is the DLNA screen sharing feature that the MyTouch 4g is touting. Does anyone know if this is something that's possible on the G2?
wrong forum!
i have to ask only because im clueless, wtf is DLNA screen sharing?
thanx, veritas

My understanding of it is this, it's the ability to stream content directly from your phone to a DLNA compliant device, kind of like a networked media storage device would do. It can be a substitute for TV out in some cases. I have some movies (home movies, photos, etc) that I just recorded on my G2 and want to watch them on my TV. Well, my PS3 is DLNA compliant and I would stream these movies through my PS3. If anyone else has anything to add or wants to correct anything that I may have misstated please do.
How can I enable the long-hold action for the Menu button that pops up the on-screen keyboard?
While I am foaming at the mouth to know how to make my g2 dlna, i have a far moar simple question.
Just need some help starting an app.. such as setcpu from visionary.sh.
I know i can set it from app to start on boot, but have run into it not having su permission at that point. yes I am a script or cmd line no0b but any help would be appreciated.

I feel that's a bit more specific question to be asked in the visionARY app thread located: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=808514

In regards to my posting, is there a decent Guide or Bible that has the various complexities of the Android Kernel?
What is QMI, What is Fastboot, all these types of important Acronyms and Terms that are not known to the general joe schmoe.
Thanks

Your answer to my question was sooo unhelpful. Read that thread my question is posted there, and it has gone unanswered. I have also read most of the threads in general, app, and have done a search with no real clear answer.
So now you can either help me or give me some moar useless links.

Take a look at this thread. Should help you get through it easily.
to tell you the truth i was afraid to root my cliq because i didnt want to brick the phone, so no i havent temp rooted yet. i have the new ota. with the temp root if i shut my my off or it dies will it revert back to stoc because of the backup installed
edit. i downloaded visionary about 5 minutes ago so i did the 1 click root.
First off, its not a backup. Secondly, if you reboot you'll clear the cache and will have to re-root. Its temp, so you won't brick your phone.

Hey all,
I've noticed that when using Cyanogen and the new Facebook app with the crazy permissions, that it notices I've revoked permissions, should i choose to, and says it wont start until i restore them.
So I've deleted the app, as that's even creepier than the new permissions it wants.
However, as this will probably be the start of a new trend i was wondering if there was any other methods that could be used to prevent programs from doing this?
BTW - If you want to support Facebook or tell us how good Google+ is please go elsewhere, this is not for that discussion.
Please use the Q&A Forum for questions Thanks
Moving to Q&A
I am pretty sure only the dev of an app is able to control what the app does or rather wants to do.
sorry to revive an old thread, but, this issue is getting only worse...http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=41903210
I'm looking into developing an app that adds a current-app-restart function for force-quitting the current app with focus and then restarting it. But, I want to add it to the Navigation Bar in ICS (requiring root would be fine) but I can't seem to find anywhere that talks about creating an app that inserts a button into the nav bar. If it is possible, will it have to be manually started via a regular app link or can it register itself with the OS? Either way is fine; the latter preferable, of course. The app logic itself is no problem, it's the adding a nav button I need help with.
Anyone able to point me in the right direction for documentation? Is it possible without recompiling the rom? Thanks for the help.
As much as I want to help you, I know almost nothing. I do know you're in the wrong section though. Try the Q&A. And when you do make this, you could post it here, or maybe themes and apps if its an app.

hmm.. figured android development would be the place to go for android development. I'll post in the other forum and if I find something I'll post back.

What's ICS?
Since you'd have to edit code, it cannot be done without decompiling/recompiling. Edits in both SystemUI.apk and frameworkres.apk, but I wouldn't even begin to know what xml's and other edits would be involved.
Plus, I think you've got this posted in the wrong thread friend. Should be in general.

Seriously? You say general, the other guy said Q&A. gd this forum is confusing...
I'm not looking to edit the OS, I'm looking to create an app that adds a button to the nav bar. If that's not possible, I guess I'll abandon the whole idea because I don't want to have to recompile my current ROM everytime it gets updated :/

If you are asking a question then Q&A seems like a good fit. If you are making a statement or giving info then general is usually the correct place...
The simplest thing to remember though if there is nothing released or developed then the development section is most definitely not the correct place to be in.
This section is the place where the users have no mercy. You can get away with the other sections a whole lot easier. Oh, and then there is the apps and then section where you will find some mod as well.
How that helps...
It cannot be done with vanilla ICS... You'd have to customise the navigation bar code to do what you want... AOKP has the ability to add any app shortcut to the navigation bar... You could use that as a reference...
I figured Q&A would be for android questions, general for conversation, and development for development. As I'm looking to "develop" an app, it seemed reasonable.
Oh well, I posted in the Q&A forum. Thanks for the help, I'll get it down eventually.
The guide on this post should help get started. I don't know if you can insert references to an external app as it looks like the entries tie into the resources in the navbar itself. Anyways have a look: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1743979
Also as others have stated, questions (even having to do with development) belong in the Q&A section. There's also a separate xda section for help developing apps which would probably be a prime place to start as they would know more about general ICS things such as nav button editing.
Don't know how to write it but to me with root access it would seem like every time you wanted to change a nav bar button it would need to place the apk into the system which normally if you run adb push Systemui.apk to your phone it usually force closes the systemui and will either restart after pushing or need a reboot to take effect. I don't know of a way to push images or xml changes to a apk without pushing a whole apk in example I don't think you can do this
adb push battery_charge.xml /system/app/Systemui.apk/drawables/battery_charge.xml I would look into how t mobile theme chooser is written that allows things like that to happen should be a pretty good start.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Instagram is a social networking near-must for a young individual who is trying to "Move with the times". But there is a problem -- instagram is not compatible with all devices. Which forces me to stay back in times on my HTC HERO200. For whatever reason it is not compatible with my hero which is quite frustrating. This HTC is running cm7 and on a cdma network. But does anyone know why it won't work? Is there also any way to make this app (and possibly others) compatible with different devices?
Thanks all you developing geniuses on the forums I love you all
