Desire Will not shut down. - Desire General

Never shuts down. I always have to take battery out. It just stays on the 'shutting down...' menu with the blured background.
How do I fix it?
This is a stock, unbranded desire from 3UK.

I used to have this problem, it did eventually shut down after about 10 minutes though.
I gave up trying to fix it and now it no longer does it.

I used to have the same problem but it seames to have dissaprared. I can't say I have a solution but you might want to try this:
- power of your phone (take out battery if needed)
- power on the phone while holding the menu key; this will make your phone enter safe mode i.e. no third party apps will be available, just the system ones
- let it finish the whole startup sequence and then turn of your phone and restart normally again
Please report back if this solves the problem.

its usually linked to task managers,
Used to have it all the time, but since i dont use any task managers, everything is fine
Good luck
JD

I've noticed I get this problem too sometimes. I think it has a lot to do with android trying to shut down all the runing processes. Do you have a non HTC or Google live wallpaper (especially a graphic intensive one) ? do you get a lot of e-mails/tweets/texts tun up while you are shutting down, do you plug your phone in to charge as you are shutting down. All these things leave the system with lots to do and I think that if the efect is the same as if you were trying to do too many things on an underpowered windows PC, there is a logjam of things all wanting to happen at the same time. This will eventually clear, but it take a while as noted above.

I found the solution on mine after a month of taking out the battery which is not good for the phone.so to make it shut down you have to turn off the WIFI before turning the phone off.i notice no more problem..so try that and let me know if it worked.

I got this problem as well and it WAS annoying (must took out battery!).
Here is THE solution:
Before shutting down:
- Turn OFF WiFi
- Go to settings -> SD-Card -> click UNMOUNT ...
Reboot.
That's it
In addition, I also download this FREE "SDRescan" app:
http://www.cyrket.com/p/android/com.bero.sdrescan/
And did rescan BEFORE UNMOUNT
The time to boot is now shorten to few seconds max 1 minute or so.
This depending how many apps do you have installed!

I hate it when people ask questions, get suggestions on how to solve their problems but then NEVER give feedback.

its went away now and shut downs instantly, i just pressed shut down and went to sleep for the night, since then its fine.

Hibernate?

Quite a few smartphones out there support hibernate. HTC is amongst the manufacturers that makes it possible to completely shutdown the phone and write all memory to a file on the nand which is put back in memory when the phone is turned back on. This way it only takes a few seconds to go from off to fully functioning, practically the same thing computers can do for years. Now I wonder if this could be done with the Defy (and possibly any other Android phone for that matter). I don't know how HTC does it but I guess it's pure software as in not an integrated Android feature. And if they can do it I'm sure some of the XDA guys can do it. Or is that wishful thinking??
Well if you want to save battery, then there are certain task killers which actually closes all the tasks which are not in use but running (excluding ignore list) and this way whenever the screen is turned off, it closes those tasks, that improves the battery. If that is what you meant?
I found this on google:
http://www.androidzoom.com/android_applications/tools/hibernate_ctp.html
No what I mean is in the event you have to shut down the phone entirely that all content in the RAM gets written to nand (or maybe sd). This way when it boots again it simply restores its RAM within seconds, effectively cutting boot time to only a few seconds instead of 40. Compare this with Windows' hibernate function for the pc.
Turns out HTC calls it Fast Boot. It's not a real hibernation function because if you put the phone to sleep with it and remove/replace the battery it would perform a normal cold boot. So it's more of a very low power sleep mode, guess more like a computer's S3 sleepstate where only the RAM stays powered while all the rest (cpu, chipset, video, audio etc) is turned off.
Sounds like a very interesting option, very curious if this would be possible on a defy.
This would be a nice feature.

Totally pointless if you ask me. Just enable airplane mode if you want epic battery life?

Or turn it all the way off and save even more power.
There are also plenty of 'smarter' ways to safe power, such as scheduling the handset to automatically disabling 3G overnight etc, which don't even require you to switch the handset off.
Airplane mode still leaves the cpu switched on. The purpose of that mode is to be still able to use the device without a working connection.
Say you are away from home and didn't bring the charger. Now the battery is almost dead. Then a very low power sleep mode would come in handy because it boots in only a few seconds and after a few more seconds you can turn it 'off' again. Fast and snappy, hardly using any power. And this is XDA so another extremely valid reason to have it is simply because we can. For pc's it's everyday technology so why not make it available on our pocket sized super computers?
I always disable hibernate in my PC.
Actually me too but I do use the sleep mode quite often with my laptop. Works great when you move your laptop a lot to other places but don't want long boot times. It could actually survive days in this mode on a full battery.

GN Does't go to sleep when inactive

Hi all,
My Nexus has been doing something a bit weird the past few days... The display is set to go to sleep after 30 seconds of inactivity (and yes, I've triple checked it) though recently it has just been staying on the whole time until I press the power button. I tried a few things, like switching the inactivity time to 15 seconds, or trying it whether plugged in or not, but it still stays on. It's a bit annoying because I'm concerned for privacy if I leave it on my desk (in a college dorm room) while I'm out for a few minutes and it doesn't go to sleep, or for battery if I put it in my pocket and never turns off. Anybody have similar problems or solutions?
Thanks
To me, it sounds like an app is misbehaving, and thus keeping your phone awake... have you tried removing all of your apps except the essentials (gapps) and see if this problem still persists?
Yes so I just turned it off and back on; working better now thanks!

My G2 will shut itself off - any suggestions?

I'm looking for any ideas for the problem I'm having on my G2. I'm afraid it's a hardware problem and not much I can do about it.
I started having problems after upgrading from CM 7.1 to 7.2, but I don't think it was related to the upgrade. I started having battery draining problems, the phone took forever to get fully charged, and car mode would automatically start sometimes when plugging up or unplugging the charger. I cleaned the usb port with alcohol (with battery removed), let dry, and restarted. Now I don't have the car mode problem and the battery problem is somewhat better.
My problem now is that the phone will just die when I'm using it. Usually when I'm using the browser. I'll be scrolling on a page and the phone will just turn itself off. Like the battery died. I can turn the phone back on and it will start up, get all the way started back up, but while it is still loading the home screen widgets, it will go off again. I can repeat this several times. The only way to recover is to plug in the charger. I don't have to hit the power button again, just plugging in the charger will start up recovery mode automatically, I'll choose reboot and the phone will start normally then and stay on.
The phone never dies when I'm not using it. I'll carry it all day, making phone calls on and off, and it'll stay on with no problem. Mostly, I only have the problem when using the browser. Also had the problem while using my newsreader. Once during playing a game. But if I start up browsing the internet, it doesn't take long before it will turn itself off. A matter of a couple of minutes. I don't have the problem with reading emails with K9. Don't have a problem in downloading from the internet such as podcasts. Don't have a problem in sending text messages. Don't recall it shutting down while using the Facebook app. After putting up with this for a week, some troubleshooting and observations.
I never have this problem if the charger is plugged in. Only when it is running fully from the battery.
I've tried swapping to a different battery.
Turned down the overclocking with no difference.
I've changed to other recoveries, CM 7.2, CM 7.1, a CM 7.1 that I was running in May. No difference.
I've swapped memory cards.
I've reset battery stats.
No difference if running on wifi or just data.
Clearing caches made no difference.
So, I start thinking it must be a hardware problem, but then why does it only crop up when internet browsing. Must be power related since plugging in the charger makes it go away, but why does it not have a problem with using the phone in other ways?
Any suggestions on what I could try?
You could try to see if there is too much voltage drop when you start something power-hungry. Use a battery voltage logger and post the results. Start logging, let the phoneidle for a minute and then start browsing. Even if the phone shut off, the log should still be there after rebooting.
Thanks for the idea. I can't locate a logger that looks like it would work. It would have to capture a quick drop in voltage that is momentary. This problem happens even on a full battery and when the phone come back on (either momentarily or after a recovery reboot) the battery level is unchanged.
You might try as well an other way: first idle, then gradually step up to a more power hungry app to see when the problem actually happens. I have no other ideas...
Make sure that you dont have any contact with the battery and the door.
Normally batteries are covered with an aluminum wrap, and can cause short-cuts with the phone itself.
I searched it for a while with the galilio batteries.
You can try to put some saranhwrap around the battery.
I have the same problem with two different batteries. But I'm ready to try that too.
Battery graph
So here's a graph of my battery status. Long time to charge to 100%. Discharges pretty rapidly. Each downturn ends in the phone turning itself off. Notice that at 7:30 today, it turned itself off, I did a recovery reboot, then noticed it wasn't charging very well (green line turns to blue but doesn't increase), then I did a manual reboot and when the phone restarted, it showed the battery was at 100% charge (from about 60% before the reboot).
What do you think - hardware or software?

Well, I just took the cover off for awhile and tried it. Played crosswords (Shortz) for awhile with no problems. Started my newsreader (Newsrob) and it shut itself off in about 15 seconds. So, no short to the battery cover.
Same thing is happening to me. I use poweramp or the browser and the G2 just shuts off. Then I restart it and it tells me that the battery is low. Once I shut it down and reboot in recovery and wipe the battery cache it's back to it's normal battery level. I disabled data and set my phone for 2G networks only and it didn't shut off after. I'm assuming this is a wireless issue? I'm running mimicry 1.3.0 on my G2.
Had the same problem. Swapped out batteries and problem gone.

Did you swap the battery and immediately have no further problems? I tried swapping my battery already and still have the same problem.

HTC One X Powering Off Right After Booting

Hello all,
Let me start off the message by mentioning that I have been a (altogether) very happy user of cyanogen mods with my last 3 android phones.
The last and current (but it seems not for long) is an HTC One X, which is over 2 years old.
This poor thing has gone through so many ROMs that I have lost count.
It is currently running on a stable cm10.2.1, upgraded from cm10.1.3.
I have experienced sudden power offs when there were obvious battery drain, battery overheat, weird app installation issues, especially since moving to cm 10.2.1, which also caused the GPS to stop getting any satellite signals.
However, the phone has recently (a couple of weeks) leveled up into a bizarre mode:
It will power off all of a sudden, the battery levels are not low 65-75%, so I would assume it was just some process in the background, and go ahead and start the phone up again to go and check through the logs, or even disable/cleanup dodgy overreacting apps. But to my surprise, the phone passes the quietly brilliant screen, as well as the CM logo with the circling arrow and as soon as you can see the background it shows Powering off - the phone is shutting down.
For those brief couple of seconds I can see the battery indicator (top right corner) showing a small part of it in red, letting me believe the battery's status is critically low. So I let the phone charge for half an hour, and start it up again, with the same result, once the device goes past the logo and the background shows, the Powering off message appears again. The battery indicator is still showing a small red circulating section of the whole.
The next step was to go and check in recovery mode. The battery on the TWRP screen shows almost 70%, and this leads me to assume there is something wrong with the battery. But the phone is not turning off for as long as in recovery mode. I still haven't ruled out the battery issue, and will test it when I get delivered and replace the spare one I have ordered.
Reading through forums and other threads, there were people complaining that they had the same issues when the phone was trying to change from 2G to 3G and the other way around, so I removed the sim card and have restarted the phone, still the same result, powering off after boot.
I also reflashed 10.2.1 thinking that a clean installation will help getting rid of some new app/processes that might be causing this, but exactly the same powering off occurs after booting. The same happens even after a factory reset.
Usually, after half an hour of inactivity the phone would start up normally, but today it has been several hours and the behavior is not improving.
At this point I can't get into the phone other than on recovery, I can't copy from/into its storage anything, not even the nandroid backups I regularly do (and which stupidly I haven't copied over to an external storage). I could try reflashing some stock image, but even that I don't have on the internal storage.
So as you see, I am bit stuck. Phone will not stay ON long enough for me to connect to my machine and save my backups, or load any new stuff.
If you have any other suggestions other than this, or perhaps a workaround to what I have already tried, I would extremely appreciate it.
Cheers,
Mad
I have the same problem..
I have tried everything, but nothing helped me.
Now my battery is 0% and i cant do nothing - cant charge it, cant boot in bootloader.
Something heppened when you changed the bettery?

My M8 turns off by itself & afterwards settings etc are reset!

I'm experiencing a weird problem with my M8. The unit would turn itself off all of a sudden. This happens without a low battery warning and no other error messages or warning displayed on screen. No beeps or audio cues, either. I would be looking at it and using it as per normal when it would just power down and turn off all by itself. This has happened twice in the last two weeks. In both instances, they have these in common:
a) Battery was low but not critically so. IIRC, the first time it happened the battery was at 25% and the latest incidence the battery was at 18%. The low battery warning usually given at 15% power wasn't displayed.
b) In both cases, I've just only turned the display on & started using the M8 for less than 15 seconds before it turns off.
c) In both instances, the mobile data & GPS was on. Wifi was off. Phone wasn't charging and the camera/flash was also off.
What I do after this happens is I would go home & charge the phone using the original M8 charger. The charging battery icon would be displayed and the charging level tallies with the last charge level that I see before the phone turns off. I let the phone charge for about 10 minutes or so before tinkering with it.
What's frustrating is that after these sudden shutdowns, some of my settings were reset & the phone will be wonky. I had to re-do the settings in both the settings app & also Google settings according to my preferences. Some default apps were cleared as well, so the phone would ask which app I'd like to use for my Home screen (either Sense Home or Nova Launcher, which I use exclusively). Some developer options were reset too, e.g animation scale etc. Other basic settings as well, such as auto updating apps in Google Play Store.
Also, first time it happened, I was locked out of my phone. The lock screen is displayed but all the PIN combinations I've tried seems to be wrong. The lock screen would go off after I try inputting the PIN. Restart by pressing vol button with power button didn't work at all. I'd touch the screen, the lock screen will be displayed, I'd try inputting PIN but I guess it's wrong because the screen just goes off. In the end, I had to reset the PIN number using Android Device Manager on Chrome running on my desktop PC. Only then was I able to access my phone. My wallpaper was reset, although my app icons on the desktop was the same as before. Apps were all there.
The 2nd time this happened was yesterday. I wasn't locked out of my phone but all my text messages (SMS) were lost. No other loss of data, as far as I can tell. But some of the settings, default app preferences & also app permissions were reset. Had to redo them all over again. Getting a bit tiring, this.
I don't understand what's happening. My M8 is on 6.0, stock ROM & unrooted. Never rooted. I've done the battery calibration steps once but that was before the Marshmallow update. When my M8 was running Lollipop, there were times when it would turn itself off as well but it was triggered by using the camera flash at low battery levels. However, settings, app preferences & permissions were not reset at all then.
Has this happened to anyone? What could be wrong? Would appreciate any & all feedback Thanks in advance.
This happens to me too. My battery is dodgy and it turns itself off when the battery is displaying anywhere up to 30%!! What I have found is that if you attempt to turn the phone on and it turns back off during the boot process then this is what screws up the settings. As long as it is charging and completes the boot without turning off then the settings are fine.
This is a MM problem. Wasn't present with LP as you and others have reported.
The only possible fixes on your end is to do a factory reset and then run the phone down until it shuts off and then charge to 100% with the phone still off. You can also try holding power+vol up+vol down for 2 minutes. This should wipe battery calibration stats. These suggestions may or may not resolve the problem but are worth trying.

Its happening to me!
I thought this was MM issue but i have flashed cm 14.1 and still the same problem is happening. My phone turns of somewhere between 15%-30% everytime. I have tried re-calibrating the battery but it didn't help. Now i am thinking to sell the device due to this issue.
My girlfriend had the same problem with her HTC one M8.
I've replaced the memorycard with a new one last week and it didn't happen since. Hopefully this will solve the problem
Hi together.
I want to give an information about my experience with sudden shut off. I had this issue with my M8 since about six months now. Tried the stuff with recalibrating the accu without success.
Last thing I did was changing the accu. And now everything is all right. The power is remaining much longer over the daily use and I can bring it down below 15% without sudden death.
