o2 Branding ? - Desire General

I've not got a desire yet but will be getting one in a few weeks courtesy of a free upgrade, I'm on o2 and would like to upgrade direct from them, but would like to hear from anyone who's already done this about any branding, is there much ?, if so is it changeable stuff or not ?
If the branding is too much and locked (I don't want to root or flash it, other than a htc official one), then I'll get one through a third party, unbranded, as I did my blackstone.

Hi, I've got a o2 Desire, but I got it over the my Hand shop. This Desire is not branded or locked in any features. Maybe this is only by o2 Germany.

I've got an o2 UK, there is a o2 boot up screen and theme wallpaper. Apart from that no other branding, phones also unlocked

Thank's infamous6622, knew it would be unlocked as all o2 handsets on contract in the UK are, was hoping it would just be boot screen & theme, obviously the theme is easy to change but is the default HTC one/s still in there ?, and can anyone tell me if the boot screen is easy to change ?

I got mine through CPW on O2 and it's unbranded... They do upgrades for existing O2 (non-CPW) customers, although they are completely and utterly rubbish to deal with...

That's who I got my blackstone from, well, their online branch mobiles dot co dot uk, at the time £100 for the handset from CPW and free from mobiles with the same deal, but the desire is free on my tarrif wether I get it from mobiles, CPW or o2 direct, but because like you say they are rubbish to deal with, I'd rather o2 had my money direct, as I've had not a single problem with them in 6.5 years, so would only go to a third party if either the handset wasn't available directly from o2, or, it was but was too heavily branded.

Does anyone's O2 desire have start up / shutdown sounds by default ! ?
Mine doesn't, but I keep hearing other desire users saying it's very loud on startup/shutdown !

It would appear that none of the operator branded ROMs have the start up sound. Your on O2 doesnn't, mine on Orange didn't and I've read on these foruns thet the T-Mobile one doesn't wither. The people saying that the start up sounds are very loud have either unbranded models or (like me) have flashed a stock ROM.

CPW deal should be the same as mobiles as far as I know, they don't come with unlimited data but are £5 a month cheaper than o2 direct, so you have to add the data via o2 afterwards which is £5 per month, making them identical in price.

Thanks.. Thought I was missing out on something !

o2 unlimited data is nothing to do with CPW, doesn't matter how you got your phone or what phone youv'e got, you pay o2 for unlimited data, and that's what you get, until recently buying a tomtom go live, I used tomtom on my blackstone with a traffic subscription mostly all day, when not streaming video or doing other downloads, for a while I even downloaded linux iso's on it at work, then copied them over to the pc and burnt them when I got home, and in nearly 18 months of doing this I've never heard anything from o2 about FUP, and I got my contract through mobiles, a subsidary company of CPW.

XDA IIi

I am wondering if there's XDA IIi available in the Philippine market and how much is the cost....
Hi! I'm new member. You can see the price of OIIi at: http://shop.uplands.co.uk/acatalog/XDA_2i__XDA_IIi_.html
It was the price in UK! And in Philippine, I don't know. I'm a Vietnamese
according to O2 Asia tech support when i called them a couple months back, they have no plans on selling the IIi in asia, so you will have to get them from somewhere else.
on the upside, i can vouch for uplands, as i bought my xdaII from that site while i was in the UK last year. apart from having competitive prices, they are efficient and responsive in my experience & after sales service (while i was in the UK) was v good. also no trouble getting the unlocking code from them, though i had to go through a few people to do that.
me i'm gonna wait for the HTC universal due september 2005 =)
I'm in Vietnam. My brother will sent a XDA2i to me. He is in England. I don't know to unlock it! Could you give me the way to unlock it! Thank you very much!
hi =)
i bought mine on a 1 year contract, after which, of course, i had to get it unlocked to use it on a network other than O2.
If you are buying one from the UK, you will have to ensure that it is SIM-Free, (which is the one listed at £562.83 at that link you provided). if you have bought this, then there should be no problem.
if you bought it on any other tariff-based price, then they anticipate that you will go through your contract (i believe 12-month based) regardless of whether you get the unlocking code or not. to get the code i called uplands, who transferred me from the sales to some support department, where the person there had to go through several weeks of dealing with O2 to get me the code. i paid a fee (charged to me by O2 through uplands), and she later e-mailed the code to me. considering that this was one year after i purchased my xda from uplands, and have had little dealings with them (uplands) since, that she took the time & effort to do this for me left a very good impression on me. of course, this may vary by person, so i can't guarantee anything =) just speak for myself.
dunno about the IIi but there have been programs here to extract the unlocking code from the phone itself for the XDAII. though have run into some problems. since i already got mine 'officially', i havent read those thread carefully.
To somynex
It means: XDAIIi cann't be unlock if he has not used up all the fixed time regulated for this???

no it can be unlocked (the unlocking code can be obtained for a fee at any time). but in theory if you get it at a 1 year contract, they usually expect you to see out that one year. there are buy out clauses but those usually bump the price up to what you would've paid had you not bought it under a contract obligation in the first place.
i know people who have defaulted on their contracts but i like my good credit rating, and intend to keep it that way =)
The unlocking code can be obtained for free at any time? Where? How?

What price are O2 UK selling the orbit for?

Anyone know what the instore price is for a "25 pm tarrif?
I called O2 today and to upgrade my exec on a £25 tarrif they wanted £259 pounds. Nearly fell off my chair laughing, PAC code on its way to me hello vodaphone
i just upgraded to 02 orbit for free!
I just upgraded to o2 200 £30.00 / month ( same as I've been on for ages ) - phone cost £99.99.
I think if i'd gone for £35.00 / month the cost drops to £49.99
Best deal on t-mobile (who needs wifi)
I went for an MDA Compact III (I dont use wi-fi).... I got it on 18month contract UFIX for £15 a month (this is the UFIX) then £7 a month bolt on for web and walk (unlimited connection).... The t-mobile web site is in fact more expensive than the shops... I went into my local t-mobile shop and picked up two with my girlfriend... the guy said they usually would be £40 for the phone but we could have them for £20 each... so a 18 month contract for 22.00 a month and £20 for the phone which we both thought was an excellent deal!... the boxes were unsealed (but) the phones were intact and not touched just shown to customers... there is quite a few t-mobile shops with ones opened and you can get a good deal on these handsets, I did go to another t-mobile shop before hand but the Artemis looked like it had been dropped so I didnt touch it !....
free of charge at o2 shop - i am on £30 per month tariff but had my qtek s100 since june last year.
i got mine 49.48 on T-Mobile Flext web 'n' walk 22.50 a month for the full 18 month contract. was on T-Mobile website for 79.99!! So better deal on the High Street.
Thank you, so basically they were trying to rip me off :-(
Shame the t-mobile version doesn't have wifi as I do use it quite a bit with my xda exec
Will try a local store next and see if they give me a more realistic offer, I think my problem was I don't normally go over my minutes so O2 are probably not that bothered if I move.
Ta
just to say it seems some shops have been getting the price confused on this handset, when I phoned the store (to see if they had any cheap microsd cards) the day after....they said they gave me the phone free by accident as the pricing hadn't been sorted with them by o2. Reckon they had to pay upgrade charges for me thanks o2
I phoned up for a PAC code and they upgraded mine for free £35 tariff.
I tried O2 earlier today, the local shop didn't have any Orbit's in stock, they wouldn't offer any decent sim only tariffs to use GPRS so I decided to move elsewhere (T-Mobile Web and Walk).
O2 wouldn't issue a code over the phone to move networks - I have to wait for a text message, T-Mobile account and device is set-up, just waiting to port the number across.
I can live without the WiFi to be honest, if I need it I will use one of my other toys, both my main phones (Artemis and MDA-III) still feel lighter in the pocket than carrying around either the Exec or IIs both of which are bricks using extended batteries.
Ten years plus with O2 - goodbye, you really need to address the mobile internet costs, your tariff is beyond a joke - Mike
O2 are not selling the Orbit sim free as it is there "baby" and will only be released with a contract for now.
on my £20 contract o2 UK told me that i did not spend enough to justify a cheaper upgrade - the £200 was too much for me, considering they would have given me £100 to stay with my old imate jam (so £300 upgrade then).
so i cancelled, in writing. would have gone with o2 online.
i just received a text giving me a finishing date when someone from o2 called asking why i was quitting. he offered me a great deal:
100mins 400text £15/month and £100 for the orbit.
chuffed!
moral: i don't think o2 are so prepared to offer better deals if you just threaten to quit with them - but maybe if you get more serious....
Well I left O2, and when contacted the chap was most reasonable when I explained the reason for leaving was due to the high cost of the GPRS usage. He inquired which provider I was switching to - when I mentioned the Web n Walk contract he said little more, my mind was made up prior to the call.
No offer they could make would come close, there again it all depends how you use the device, at between 15 to 25MB per day when mobile I had to address the cost of GPRS - Mike
Can anyone tell me if the T-Mobile version of the O2 Orbit has Wi-FI I seen from an earlier post that this may not be the case. But I am not sure this is correct? thanks Jd76.

Hi jd76 - it has not i am afraid - why they have done that seems madness but there you go
The T-Mobile MDA Compact-III as it is known does NOT have WiFi when supplied in the UK, certain other European versions of the T-Mobile MDA-C-III do have WiFi, so I guess its rip of Britain time again! that said the device is very good and combined with the GPRS Web & Walk you have internet where ever and when ever you like (its just a bit slow) - Mike
Thanks Meschle & Mikealder but I would prefer Wi-Fi built in so looks like O2 when time for upgrading...thanks..
us orbit?
when will artemis or orbit be available in the us?
O2 Best Deals
I went into the Watford store in the UK and said that I had my pac code with me from Vodafone and immediately got a free XDA Orbit (which comes unlocked) on a 12 mnth tariff for £35 a month (400 mins, 100 txt), and after 6 months I can lower my tariff. Just waiting for a 2gb micro sd now. £39.99 from play.com
Hi,
It may worth noting that other than for one month in last years contracr o2 never logged my GPRS usage.
I had a 6mb usage limit and according to their site I never used any of the allowance! Though in the one month they did log it they stung me for an extra £20.
As I never used my Wifi on my JAMin it was a no-brainer switching to T-Mobile and I got the same deal as one of the other posters @ £49 for phone Flext20 (£22.50 per month with WnW).
I was paying £24 with o2.

Bad news? (if true)...

Hi
I ordered mine from Clove few days back, but yesterday luckily I got Desire on PAYG from Carphone Warehouse... So today I called Clove 2 cancel my contract, I just asked Sale Person that when r u guys getting ur stock now as CPW have unlocked stock? He said HTC will (directly) send them a bigger stock from mid-next-week...
And also he went on 2 say that Clove have been told from HTC that the unlocked stock from CPW have some software problem AND ANY ONE WHO GOT DESIRE FROM THEM MAY HAVE 2 RETURN IT BACK 2 THEM 2 B REPLACED WITH THE NEW DESIRE (which HTC will send them mid-next-week)...
I am worried 2 hear that because mine is PAYG on Orange from CPW & the CPW person said that Orange don't have phones return policy... So if this is true,,, are we (unlocked desire owners) in trouble???

worst case scenario they will flash the newer ROM to your desire, IMO (that is if there is anything wrong with it)
Mine works fine
Could be a bit of doublespeak from Clove, as they and other online sellers appear to be losing money hand over fist as people cancel their pre-orders and go to....yep, you guessed it, CPW! I'll worry when a bug is identified and appeares on my phone...
If there is a software fault then it would be fixed by an OTA update. Recall my arse.

Yea... quite agree-able point here. If HTC told them that CPW stock had some software issues they would definitely have told CPW 2 stop selling their current stock and wait 4 new stock from them 2 arrive (as selling problematic phones will harm HTC's name)....my point of view...

How much are cpw selling them pay as you go for!?
Even if there was a fault, CPW as the seller would be obliged to rectify for you by either updating te ROM, or replacing.

Mine arrived from CPW on Monday and I have only experienced issues with mobile network access.
Neither my old Vodafone nor my new T-Mobile SIMs can connect to 3G/HSDPA using any of the APN configurations pre-configured on the phone.
I have successfully got the Vodafone one working using settings from the internet, but am still to find working one for T-Mobile.
Another thing I noticed that was wrong was that when I selected T-Mobile in the setup wizard, a Virgin Mobile scene was added with the web browser home-page set to Virgin.
I am hoping that the replacement firmware will fix this but I will hang on to the phone and flash it myself when it becomes available.
Edd.
HA!
If there was really a problem it is likely HTC would have made it known to everyone, most likely it is a software issue, I don't think I've heard of HTC having bad hardware batches like Nokia so we should all be fine.

No! They use the same phones on any contract or PAYG or simfree sale.
When i first boo the phone it shows the update icon so i think it did an OTA update so if there was any problems it should be fixed
ok thanks, just a couple more questions;
Any network branding in the OS?
Is the software the pre-release software like on the t-mobile handsets?

[Q] HTC Desire in amsterdam

Hello folks...
a friend of mine flying tomorrow to amsterdam for a week and i asked him to look for htc desire there...after a few googling i found that the most popular store in amsterdam that sells this device is Belcompany.nl...they have a lot of them in the city there...
as i understand from this page the device cost 479euro?
http://www.belcompany.nl/Winkelwagen/Pages/Winkelmandje.aspx?ticketid=001158
my question are to the locals or ppl who bought there are those:
1. this price is stand alone or i have to agree to some kind of a 3 year contract like iphones?
2. is it simfree?
3. is it branded? (have to buy some kind of a code to unlock it).
4. this store use global refund taxfree? (friend is a tourist).
question 4 is the most important to me..
thx ahead
On the link you give it's a free Desire included with a 2 year contract.
From Belcompany ( a sub contractor/seller) = mostly sim free & unbranded.
@ 4. tax refund is out of my knowledge, I'm local and my Desire is not for sale
For a price check on webshops try: http://tweakers.net/pricewatch/253414/htc-desire-bruin.html
Problem is, availability is low to very low, if your friend has some time to spend, let him check out some bigger "real"shops
1. this price is stand alone or i have to agree to some kind of a 3 year contract like iphones?
It's standalone price
2. is it simfree?
Yes
3. is it branded? (have to buy some kind of a code to unlock it).
No
4. this store use global refund taxfree? (friend is a tourist).
Probably you can get refund
BUT: most important, I'm not sure if they have them in stock. It's very hard to get them anywhere in Holland. On a lot of forums you see people complaining about waiting for their desire for weeks...
Good luck!

479 euro is pretty much the going price for a desire in Europe, so this is going to be an unbranded, unlocked phone. Purchase tax, known as BV in Holland, is 19% of this price. Save your receipt and you can get it refunded at the airport on the way home.

(UK) Tesco HTC One X Price

Tesco have the HTC One X on Tesco Mobile PAYG for £429! Like most of Tesco's higher end PAYG phones, it should be unlocked.
The seals are broken and resealed, to install the SIM and place Tesco booklet and PAYG swipe card in box.
I connected the phone to WiFi and didn't get a software update prompt, so it's likely Tesco have changed the CID! I'm sorely tempted to return mine and repurchase, though if the CID differs then that'll make keeping up with OTA's a hassle until s-off is achieved
Contract deals, cheapest are:
T-Mobile, 300 mins, 500 texts and 750MB data, with a flexible addon so you can add unlimited texts. £26/24m, free phone.
o2, 300 mins, unlimited texts, 500MB data, £27/24m, free phone.
Branded handsets are SIM Free so will have WWE CID.
Hope this helps.
What version is it running on? If it's 1.26.401.2 then it's unbranded so bargin!!
In stores for 429? Sim free?

Yes SIM Free. Tesco don't lock any of the top end unbranded handsets. They slap a Tesco sticker on, and open the box to install a SIM and booklet/topup swipe card.
Will find out firmware build and post in a bit.
Thanks wouldn't go amiss If OP helps, of course!
We'll see what the build version is first
Can't find it on their website, though...

Depends if they have had any in on Tesco Mobile...
There is Tesco Mobile stock and branded stock, both allocated separately, as mentioned in OP. They won't be able to sell branded stock outside of a contract, but Tesco Mobile handsets can be sold alone as PAYG at the price shown in OP. I'll report back with build number either later this evening or tomorrow evening, though I may not bother since you lot aren't thankful for the information you've already received!
I've thanked you!
thanks from me also, please keep us posted
I'd be really interested in finding out if it is unlocked. As I staff member I get 10% off and I also have £50 in clubcard vouchers which means I could get the phone for £327!

Right did a bit of investigating at work and didn't really come with any clear answers.
Didn't have any in the store I work in so was unable to find out that way.
Had a look through the the listings on the corporate product system and it only listed pay as you go and monthly ones on a variety of networks (including Tesco) but was no listing for an unlocked handset.
