Would anyone be interested in beta testing the Desire Froyo Android 2.2 ROM?
If enough of us offer to do this, there is a chance we can speed up the release of 2.2 to the Desire, and get early access to the ROM and most importantly app2sd.
Interested? Leave your name here after you have emailed HTC to let them know.
This is silly, what are you thinking? That's not how big companies like HTC work.
More constructive than whining, what ideas have you come up with? If you don't think it will work, please feel free to ignore the thread and you won't be bothered with it.
BTW I have done with with a few companies now and it's worked well.
Trust me this will accomplish nothing more then receiving a generic mail from HTC that they are doing everything they can to provide users with amazing updates. Don't mean to rain on your parade but thats just what I (and I assume a lot other rational people) believe.
About ideas; how about waiting?
Thanks for your helpful input. No harm in trying is there? It's my time I'm wasting, and yours if you continue reading this thread. Bye
http://www.htc.com/au/cs_mail.aspx
Please post topics like this in the general section.
Can a Mod move this then? I honestly thought it was related to Desire development?
This will achieve absolutely nothing. And here's why -
If HTC let you "beta test" any of their software and something goes wrong (Phone bricked, permanently?), who's liable? sure, we could all sign a disclaimer waiving HTC of any wrongdoing, but people will still complain and HTC will still get a lot of flak from it. So why bother when you can just wait?
If you WANT to "beta test" the rom, just wait a week or two - N1's are getting updated, people will dump the rom (probably have already) and it wont take much to port it to the Desire (minus sense, of course). There you go, there's your beta test.
Wow. You honestly think that HTC will give a fl*ng f*ck? Obviously, you have never worked with/for a corporate business.
You mean like the ones I've beta tested with before? Look at least I'm trying some positive suggestions rather than just whining about not having app2sd, at least I'm trying something. And who cares? It's no skin off your back so what's the big deal?
Either way, the reports of random bricking by rooting bother me, so I'm desperately trying to avoid rooting, while desperately craving app2sd (for legitimate paid software, not to break copy protection even if it can do that).
Mods please move this thread to General.....or even better just close it.
These pointless "lets write to HTC" threads always end the same way, HTC wont give a monkeys...Its a nice idea, but a little naive
Next we will have threads offering sexual favours to htc staff for 2.2

I hate to admit it, but everyone has moved on to the HD2. They have pretty much everything working on the HD2 but there is no developers working on the Rhodium and we have no sound yet.
I really thank all the devs and everyone else involved into making Android run on our Rhodiums, but we gotta face the truth someday. It was fun and I cook WinMo ROMs for the Rhodium, but we gotta realize its dated. The only reason I still have my Rhodium is because it has a keyboard. I'm waiting for a humming bird core HTC phone with QWERTY to make the upgrade. I know some people are gonna flame. Its OK I understand you want to hold on to that Rhodium you have. We ALL do.
PS: Its sad seeing craiglisters selling Android for the HD2. I wish I could kill them all. They don't deserve any money since they did not do any of the work involved nor did they contribute ONE thing. This is why I hate scenes like the smartphone scene... People take credit for what isn't theirs.

I'm getting sick of threads on this, I'm sure devs do not appreciate them either..
Why you gotta be so negative? They are doing their best they can so why don't you lock yourself in the closet and come out of there once android has been fully ported to our device

I an getting a little woried that we have reached the point of no return. It would be helpfull if the devs did post updates to let use know where we stand. I am not giving up hope just yet. I can't upgrade for quite some time and don't want to pay out the nose for something that could give me just what I am looking for.
Just want so feedback from devs to know what's up?

Keep up the good work. Ignore the leeches. All they do is take. They dont realize that their purpose should be to test and return feedback on the testing. Instead they seem to think that this forum is like you said, full of customer service reps. Its pathetic.
Anyhow, there are tons of people who appreciate all of the developers work and look forward to more updates.
Yea Reefer, let em have it. I wish I could help more to unlock the potential of this phone. It really is a pretty slick device that just wasn't given enough polish or muscle. I researched the purchase of it for months beforehand and don't want to just give it up now.

OP, there is work being done on the sound issue, however it is slow going. I try following the development, but it's WAY over my head.

Wrong. they make a rom and put it on here for everyone. and lets say 50 people download it. and 25 of them have a problem with it. you realy thing that a dev has time to try and fix 25 peoples problems while at the same time make updates to the roms cause your demanding them? thats not how it works. if you install a rom and something goes wrong then you ask the 24 other people if any of them have had the same problem or found a fix. your a tester. if your getting the devs work for free. the least thing you could do is test it and let everyone know how it works.
Dated but not dead.
You may think its dead but for people who still own the TP2, like myself, would like to see this till the end. I still have another year with this phone before I can upgrade and I cant fork out 500+ dollars to buy a new one like the HD2 or Incredible. I'm sure there are others out there in the same situation. So just because you were able to move on with an upgrade doesn't mean its dead.
sound will be working in a matter of time acl is making head way on it over at ppcgeeks.
I know i know
this is a very touchy topic so i wanna take a different approach,,,lets say that devs are working hard on a root for 2.2 stock for all of us that are stuck ....why not let this thread be the new discussion for what is happening with root and why it is not happening yet ..like what devs are running into as far as problems go and what not...i am not a dev but i have been roming since the droid and hero an moment have come out ...why dont we help the devs as much as possible and all work together to achieve this common goal and not fight about it all day ...cause in the end we all just want root and everyone will shut up and start enjoying what their evo is really capable of ...thank you devs for all the hard work and such ..lets get this thing cracked asap...
Ps ...please would a dev who is working on this step up and give a status of what exactly is happening and if they need help...
There was no need to create a new thread for this...though I could understand tour frustration if I was in your shoes...
Sorry sir... you have wait like everyone else whoa stuck on the latest OTA.

Yes! I would love to have a real time transcript of all the devs' thoughts.
That would be fantastic.
Somehow I doubt that they would be jumping in here to update us, civilians, about their progress
Not to be the bad apple, but speaking realistically. When the Evo had 2.1, the Dev made comments all the time about that process and so on, and what to look for. This is different. No one is commenting at all. In fact, they are probable reading all these threads, looking at everyone's comment, calling each other and laughing. Why would they risk root, to help us?.. I'm just living and accepting the fact to live with the Official 2.2. Bottom line is, if they, the developers, were working on a exploit. What harm would it do to let the public know.. I'm not mad at the Dev. For 1, they're not getting paid an hourly rate to do this for the majority of people who will just download there hack without donating.. 2, they are already rooted. IT would be a different story if all the dev weren't rooted, and wanted total control over their phone. Then this would push them to find a way... And i mean thats just the way the world works. So you can't knock them for not finding a way... It is what it is... Just realisticly speaking
this process is killing me.....i miss hacking my nexus one, this evo 2.2 is a iphone that i cant fix up and customize...this sucks!!
I think the developers are busy on their ROMs. This seems to be more for the hackers. My question is: who are the hackers that have broken the ROMs in the past?

Think about it. If you were a dev with a rooted EVO, would you unroot and install 2.2 OTA and lose root, just so you could see if you could crack the 2.2 OTA?
God bless one of them if that's what they decided to do, but I wouldn't do that if I was in their shoes.

No. And like I stated in my first message, the developers are busy writing ROMs.
you dont need to unroot your phone to start trying to crack 2.2, unless im mistaken you can run the 2.2 image the sdk emulator and work on it that way. its how those who are writing roms probably test out their changes.

That may be true, but at some point the only way to be sure that the crack works is to test it on an EVO that has 2.2 either as purchased, or OTA updated. My point is that after anyone has put a ton of time and effort into getting something working just the way they want it to, there isn't much incentive to go and screw it up just to make someone else happy.

My reading comprehension is adequate, thank you. My expectations are reasonable as well.
Rooting is a luxury not something that has to be offered up to the public. Up until recently it wasnt even considered completly legal. So for everyone here including myself for that matter that disregarded the warnings and took the update(also for the people who got their phones with 2.2 stock, thats just the way it goes.) Wait patiently, the devs dont owe you periodic updates on what they are doing with their free time. And enjoy your android phones, and if you wanna customize your phone, there are ways from the market you could do so with widgets and replacement launchers that can make your phone look original without rooting.
Agreed! Well said.
I understand that with the NOV OTA, you are unable to root your device with Unrevoked... Unless you are S-off. And S-off doesn't pertain to this thread. Can someone confirm that the Unrevoked team are working on updating it? I've heard the "just wait until they release it". But I would like to put my mind at ease... and others that are... stuck. We haven't heard a peep out of the team since the OTA dropped.
You would probably be better off hitting them up on IRC or Twitter.
Twitter to no-avail. One would assume they know about the issue. Instead of leaving such a large base in the dark, it would be appropriate they they would shed some light on the situation.

I'm sure they know...but I am basing this off of nothing. They had the same issues when 2.2 came out, so they'll get something going. Don't worry, pestering them more about it won't make it come any quicker.
When they are ready, they will say something, just because they haven't doesn't mean that they don't know about it. Patience.

If all those people who are looking for "closure" pony'd up some donations, they could ask all they want. The unrevoked team does not charge for their work, so I would not "expect" anything until it comes. Something you read time and time again on these forums from developers is "don't ask for an ETA".

What about this post makes you think anyone would expedite results to you? All devs, including the Unrevoked team, work hard to produce results, as it is their collective passion to tinker and code. With or without you, results and progress will be made. And, seeing as how you do not sign their paychecks (do you?), there really is no incentive to respond to your gross, and ridiculously aggressive post.
Patience carries a lot of wait.
So the reason I can't root my droid incredible right now is because of the latest update on the phone? Well, I guess I will stop pulling my hair out trying to figure out what I did wrong then and wait for an update.
As for the donations, I'm a big open source fan, using linux exclusively for a decade, always contribute one way or another, gave a phone to the bitpim group a while back, created a linux help webpage, answer questions in forums, donate a dollar to free apps I use on my droid, etc. Hopefully others do the same thing.
Quite the sense of entitlement displayed by some. It bears mentioning that none of us are owed a damn thing.

Read your "boy's" post above yours, he's "not asking for an ETA"... He just wants someone from Unrevoked to come on here and say "we are working on it..."
If you need it so quick and cannot wait, then learn how to code and contribute. Devs don't need people like you telling them to "hurry up" just because you said so. Mind you, they do this stuff because they enjoy it, and they don't get paid except for when people donate to them. Did it ever occur to anyone that if they just "whipped up" and released something which started bricking phones left and right, everyone would then complain about how it wasn't thoroughly tested?!
Send them a sizable donation with your "hurry it up will ya" message, and see what happens...if not, then just wait like everyone else has to.

[*] All of the Above
Thank you all for your complaint
Thanks HTC... or not?
I saw in the news this morning that Desire wasn't going to get the Gingerbread update. Thankfully, now they have backtracked.
I wanted to say "Hey, HTC, thanks for that", but then I thought "Should I really be thanking them? Shouldn't all this even have occurred? Haven't they only done their job?"
So, well... all I can say is... glad to see I'll be getting official Gingerbread
I bet they were working on sense 2.1 for Desire, but there wasn't enough space so they will now leave sense to 1.0 and update only main software to 2.3
But damn, I was already excited to root first time and check some of these custom roms... Tho might still tomorrow...
Even if it's a good news, i'm still puzzled.
Why did they make such a previous statement... to backtrack within a day?
Anyway, i'm still happy to see GB coming.
Well my friends, this is good news. The power of loyal customers making comments!
HTC received 1000s of emails/twitter/facebook messages in the past 24huors since their first announcement that "Desire will not get Gingerbread".
Many people said they would not buy HTC again and were seriously annoyed at being promised Gingerbread before end of Q2 only to be told its now canceled.
I think HTC have made some marketing mistakes. They have released about 10 new handsets since the Desire and now realise that people are not ready to spend another 500euro after only 1 year with Desire. They were hoping people would just buy a new handset like Desire S etc. Forecasts earlier in the week showed that their stock price had fallen due to a concern that demand for their new handsets was lower than expected. I think this decision not to update Desire to 2.3 was a political and marketing choice not a technical one.
they now realise they were going to alienate 10000s of loyal users would would not go with HTC for the next phone!!!
I'm glad communities like this exist and can influence HTC in the way we have.
I was going to root my device today, and am currently reading up on it.
I might do so anyway for more internal space etc.
Good work all.

Is the Droid Incredible the new Droid Eris?
I was hoping for some kind of update before they start releasing those fancy new Windows Phones and I bid adieu to Android. I'm thinking of just finally breaking down and rooting.
Where is the easiest, most straight forward instructions on how to root this puppy. A few ROMS look nice... I figure I might as well try them out.
http://unrevoked.com/ unrevoked is a one click solution for root. Just root. Try out some roms, make a backup of your stock rom if you're unhappy.

It's Verizon people. If we ***** at HTC enough they'll cave but I can't write emails for everyone.
Dear XXXXXXXXX,
We are more than happy to be able to provide some clarity to the situation at hand.
Currently, our developers have to work with Verizon to determine when and if a ROM upgrade will be available. Unfortunately, there is no estimated time for availability of any ROM update. Please check the HTC America website for any software updates that may be released, http://www.htc.com/us. Just click on the support link then choose your device.
XXXXXXX, we do apologize for any inconvenience that this may cause.
To send a reply to this message or let me know I have successfully answered your question log in to our ContactUs site using your email address and your ticket number.
Sincerely,
Samantha
I only care because of source code & this is Verizon telling HTC not to update. It's fairly obvious that HTC had intentions of continued support.

I know it can be hard for people to justify taking 5 minutes to write an email they think is pointless but I would like to encourage you all to. Verizon will not change their mind but maybe we can get HTC to continue support on their site. Gingerbread won't be a big deal I know but I'm worried about ice cream sandwich & compatibility with our current resources.

They got back to me in 2 days & I'm trying to keep the dialog open.

I dunno. I was polite but informed. I simply said that I knew they had plans for it & that older or similar hardware (desire, evo, etc) had received the update so I know it's not for a lack of compatibility or power. I also mentioned my displeasure at the fact that they would rather cater to Verizon than support current customers & they might want to take a page out of apples playbook in that regard.
Lastly I let them know that this would be remembered on my next purchase.
Above all be polite but informed.
Well I just finished my second reply. Basically restating previous points made in further detail but with an emphasis on the fact that apple can't sue them for emulating their politics free policy on supporting their current customers which is a major key to their success.
Once again I implore all of you to be the squeaky wheel. It worked for the desire community. So please people, lets demand some grease.

I know it can be hard for people to justify taking 5 minutes to write an email they think is pointless but I would like to encourage you all to. We're not even talking about being rooted or not. We're talking about an update that should have been released already that will bring with it more fixes and other Rom components we need to keep development alive for our phone. I used to love CM but it definitely did not blow my mind, lol. Its just Android with another overlay.
Tv out and 720p camera don't exist in all the GB releases (customs or leak). It won't till the GB OTA or RUU is released, if ever.
I'll see if I can shoot em an email in the a.m. Wifi is spotty where I'm at currently.
Sent from my awesome sauce Incredible with some sweet Miui action
Visually, there's no difference between 2.2 and the leaked 2.3. If it's that big of a deal to you, root your **** and install the leaked 2.3. It runs fine.
If you want to get more out of your phone, go with CM7.
