Supersonic rom any good for porting? - Desire General

Just wondered with the Evo 4G rom being released in the wild, would it be a good one to port? Any positive reasons to do so?

The only thing I can think of that is in the Evo ROM that we might want is the WiFi Hotspot, and this may be too tightly connected to CDMA/WiMAX to be of use on GSM phones.

Dave

WiFi tethering has already been available (as an additional app) for rooted phones for a long time. If you know how to flash a custom rom, you basically know how to root a phone anyway. So wifi hotspot isn't really a reason for porting the EVO 4G rom over to the Desire.
What else is new on the Evo 4G that is not available on the Desire? (I know it has video chat, but the Desire doesn't have front facing camera to start with...)

HD recording?

I'm well aware of that - I've had Android phones since the G1 was released back in October 2008.
The point is that on the Evo WiFi tethering doesn't require a rooted phone, and given the issues that many are experiencing with USB/BT/FM after rooting, a WiFi hotspot app that is just an APK would be very welcome.
That being said, I seriously doubt that it could work on a Desire since I guess it required changes to the underlying OS to support it, so it would require full porting of the ROM, and if you're doing that you might as well root anyway and install a root WiFi tether app anyway.
In addition, I understand that WiFi tethering doesn't work too well on rooted Desires at present - I wouldn't know though because I can happily use PDANets bluetooth DUN.

Dave

We could Maybe Port 720p recording over!

+1 on that, i think with the right dev that could be achieved

Well htc said that they'll bring 720p recording on the desire too, we've to wait.

Android with HTC Sense from Bravo

I've just been playing with Android with HTC Sense from the Bravo on my TP2 - how come nobody's trying to get this working fully? It boots and works ok but there's no data conection but HTC Sense is really good!
Anyone working on this HTC Sense build of Android?
are you cdma or gsm? I think the cdma version works but I haven't had any luck with mine, but it does run brilliantly on my tp2!
it does crash on opening a number of programs and isn't able to establish a connection, if the developers could sort this out then it would be amazing!

There are people working on this, yes. However a data connection is pretty important on a Smartphone, almost useless without it. So we stay with 2.01 for now. LOL

im not developer but it makes sense to me for work to be done on the most up to date version available, otherwise in the future the efforts will just be doubled? but i guess if those developers are happy with an outdated android that's cool for them (i get my desire in a few days so it doesn't bother me!)
Im a sense android by klinux user...
maybe its because Im in USA now and I cant use all the same data connection (cause of cost) but I prefer the sense version without data than the normal one...
anyway...keep up on working on fully data connection and I will be the king of happy mans!!!

Having said that, it's as useful as 2.01 to me - a Smartphone without sound is pointless too, IMHO.

Android guy here. Is there any possibility that the APNs list used in the 2.1 versions you guys are testing aren't the same as those in 2.0.1? Other than that and the ril, there's nothing else in android that changes between versions that would prevent a data connection.

Touche, to each their own. I have to keep my phone on silent at work, so for me thats not as big of an issue. I did just recently get a JVC deck with BT support, and I feel like a traitor switching back to WinMo so I can listen to music.

anybody get wifi working??
Just tried it. Really nice after everything is done loading. The data, wifi, and even the wireless settings don't work. Tried the fm radio with no luck. But overall with just data working would make this far better than 2.1 or 2.0.1, i dunno which one they're on. Also the ram after load was around 36-40 and then after closing everything it was 56. Not horrible, but could be improved. Ummm i don't think power off works either, but i just reset after waiting 2 minutes. This is amazing though, i've been waiting for sense on rhodium ever since i got the phone and finally i get to try it. Sweet stuff guys keep up the great work.

Previous versions didn't support the Incredible's wireless chipset, which was fixed in 2.0.6. You shouldn't have any issues now.

If you like Sense, try Virtuous. It’s very good and stable debloated stock rom with a few treats like hulu and wireless tether built in. I used it for months before breaking down and jumping to CM7.

[Q] Wifi Calling in CM6?

Hi all -
Is it likely that some of the new features present in the froyo OTA will be ported over to the CM6 branch for the slide? I'm thinking specifically of the wifi calling and wifi hotspot.
Or now that development is focused on CM7 will CM6 be left as is?
I ask b/c I'm one of the unfortunate people that doesn't have properly functioning wifi on anything but the stock drivers...
I would just flash a version of froyo ROM that is out right now. I use this one and it works great. I just got tired of waiting for t-mobile. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=928250
but i was just reading about this same question is why i am replying to you. This thread basically says that Cyanogen probably won't have it b/c froyo has the wifi calling. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=793590
kbtoy: Thanks for your response, but that really wasn't what I asked
I have checked out the CR_Mod 2.13 rom and I just like the CM stuff better. Hence my wanting to know if those wifi features might make it into CM6 for the slide

But whatever.
well umm i think, I THINK u could flash the .32 miguel posted (when the gpl issue gets taken care of) and push wifi drivers from cm7 and the wifi calling app. thats basically what u need but idk if it would work :/
anyone else have any ideas?

There will be a formal list when it drops. I will make a thorough post of what's changed when the time is right.
The big ones are RIL & BT. Audio routing won't make FRX07, so BT audio won't work, but pairing with BT devices & transferring data should.
Great , thanks!

seems silly to me to evenrelease fr0x7 without the BT and the audo routing fixes already in place at least for the rhodium users., i understand that the BT and audio routing fixes are mostly RHOD specific so why not make 2 version's of FR0x7? Those are the changes that most ppl weant they want there BT and loud speakerphone. Just curious as to why it would even be released without those things since the fixes are out, if it means having to wait to release fr0x7 than wait IMO. i donno just my 2 cents
Audio routing isn't stable, isn't for all the devices and it's still being developed
So it's a time waste adding it now, then frx08 will have it..

Couldn't have said it better myself. Audio routing will not be implemented until it's stable.

Kernel issue, not a build issue from what I can tell.
Also, from what I've gleaned - the cam works, but only in low light. See

Bluetooth data would be great. I have an asus transformer which will not connect to an adhoc network, so WiFi tethering is out. The only solution I can find for tethering a honeycomb tablet is through pdanet tablet, which requires android on both devices and uses bluetooth. Thanks for all the hard work.

Is there a wpa supplicant hack for the transformer? My A500 tablet has the same issue stock, but with mod or custom ROM wifi tethering to my rhodium works perfect on ad-hoc. Anyway, maybe worth looking into.

Yes, it will work for all carriers assuming you set your APN. Still hashing out the best way to do this, might just have to leave it up to the end-users to configure.
I flashed prime on my TF last week. Works great and has the WPA supplicant fix already built in.
I can tether to my TP2 in winmo or whatever! Works GREAT.
Also, waiting for FRX07. Great work on FRX06!

Not easily, there's many, many changes. The easiest way would be to pull from the XDAndroid repo (all of our code is available...) and build your own system image.
07 will be out soon. In the final stages of testing.

[Q] Epic 4G tether....guidance needed

I searched the forum and found that some are having difficulty with the Epic 4G tether. After reading, I still need some help please.
I rooted the Epic using the one click method on one of the threads on the forum. About phone says:
Firmware version: 2.2.1
Baseband version: S : D700.0.5S.EC05
Kernel Version: 2.6.32.9
Build number: FROYO.EC05
Hardware version: D700.0.5
I installed on the Epic Barnace Tether and WifiTether (the one with the lime green symbol), which were the two most popular in the market.
Unfortunately, when I run the programs, my Xoom doesn't "see" my phone. Our two household laptops do whether I use Barnacle or WifiTether, but my Xoom doesn't list the phone under available wifi networks.
It's been a few months since the last thread that resembled this issue. Is there some consensus as what the easiest/best thing to do is to get my Xoom to see the Epic tethering? Perhaps this should be on the Xoom forum? Not sure.
Thanks for your help.
OK.
From my experience there two things at play here.
Number one, if i am not mistaken some devices have problems connecting to adhoc.
But this is not your problem at all.
Your kernel does not have the necesary stuff to make it work.
You need to install another rom, Simply AOSP, Experience, I can confirm work with tethering. I prefer simply AOSP because its as close to the nexus s as possible. if you still like the old samsung look you can actually switch to it with simply settings and it will be like any other samsung rom.
I had the same problem with both my galaxy s 4g and my epic 4g.
Keep in mind even after you get it working it will only be adhoc support.

OK, thanks....some more help if you would.
So what you're saying is that if I install another ROM, it will work. The name of the ROM I should install is Simply AOSP or Experience. After I install these ROMs, I will be able to tether. Is there a link that will guide me through these steps?
I have a vague idea of what ROMs are, but I don't know what simply settings are. Is there a link where I could read about that?
In your last sentence when you say keep in mind after you get it working it will only be adhoc support........what does that mean?
When I install a new ROM, will the phone lose any other functionality? Is it reversible?
Sorry for all the questions. I was just getting comfortable with rooting and ROMs are a whole new area to me.

OK, I'll check out the videos. I know nothing about ROMs other than the little I have read on this thread in the past 45 minutes or so.
The problem I am having though is that ONLY my Xoom tablet cannot see the phone wifi hotspot. My laptops see it fine and connect to it. Do you think I should be trying to fix this from the Xoom end of the problem vs. the Epic end of the problem? Confused.
I'm leaning toward the Xoom as the problem check out a Xoom forum
