Need to solve this, tryed everything I could think off and still not working.
I'm unable to sync contacts from People to Gmail.
Tryed with usual google sync (calendar, contacts, gmail) and I think it worked once right after I started phone first time, not really sure though since I deleted all contacts and transfered from my Nokia phone.
After that I deleted all my GMAIL contacts since it was regular garbage and tryed sync with phone. I just can't transfer contacts from phone to gmail.
Tryed running exchange account, I added it, mail syced but contacts wouldn't...
Is that bug with Desire or I'm doing something wrong?
Maybe gmail can't take phone number contacts?
Help
I was wondering this too.
From my old nokia I copied contacts to Sim
In my desire i copied contacts to phone from sim.
The contacts never get pushed to Google.
I also had a tricky time setting this up to work correctly...
The best way to sync contacts between Google and your Desire is to have them on Google from the start.
I had a Nokia 5800 before this and I synced my contacts into Outlook then found a programme to sync Outlook with Gmail - my contacts then got pushed to my Desire.
If you want to push contacts from your Desire to Gmail/Google, they have to be created as Google contacts.
I could be wrong but i don't think there's a way around this... I haven't found it anyway!
Yes, contacts on Phone don't get synced with gmail, only contacts which you save under "Google".
I'm still have second thoughts about concerning privacy since in all my contacts there are birthdays, private phones, other info, emails... basicly if I sync it google by just comparing emails can collect a lot of info on any of my contacts.
Sucky.

Hi.
Ive been trying to sync my contacts from my phone to my gmail for a few days now.
It syncs without any errors. but when i check my gmail i only have the 64 email contacs i had b4 imade the sync.
also if i check the people tab in the phone the 64 email contacts are also shown there but none of my phone contacts..
I think i should have everything setup right, in the gmail sync the contacts thing is checked and everything..
Anyone know what could be wrong? been syncing few times a day to see if it got any better...
Sorry for my bad english.
Can it go both ways? I thought it was from Gmail to phone, but not back?
hmm i tought both ways? :S
See here for reason

Hmmm, mine has just started having this issue. I could sync from the phone to google contacts a couple of days ago however now even when creating a google contact on the phone its not appearing in the gmail website contacts list
Edit:
Seems to be syncing now >_<
Ok i exported all my contacts to windows contacts, then exported them from there and then imported them to Gmail.
Thanks for helping me understand what was going on here
Ok - when I got the phone, and I set up my new googlemail account, imported my contacts to googlemail via Outlook, and subesequently synced my phone to the new gmail account, I though that whenever I add contacts to my phone, it would automatically update my googlemail contacts. That doesn't appear to be the case, and I'm not sure why.
I currently have 386 Google Contacts accessible by the phone, and 243 phone contacts. I have a feeling that a fair few of these contacts are duplicates (as whenever I search for a person, sometimes more than one option comes up to ring).
However, I know for a fact that at the weekend, I added a new contact to my phone, and it hasn't updated my contacts on googlemail.
Any ideas why this is might be?
only Google contacts sync to Google.
Those you have in the Phone group are going nowhere.
i would imagine that when you have added them manually to the phone, you did not change it from a phone contact type, to a google contact type before you saved it.
Also, any contacts you sync from your PC (Don't do it, HTC Sync is not worth it...)will be saved to the phone group and so won't save to Google.
HTC had to bugger the contacts up in this way to get HTC Sync to work. I wish they hadn't bothered. it's bad enough having google contacts and Exchange contacts (which it is sensible to have separate), but adding Phone as well is just overly complicating things.
Ok - that sounds fair enough. Is there any way then of aggregating all the contacts into gmail format then? - ie reformat the phone contacts to gmail?
An app or something?
I'm still confused about syncing contacts. I have a Desire on Orange. I have a gmail account, and I use the htc mail app and connect to my gmail account using exchange. I sync my contacts to my gmail account using `google/sync contacts` from the sync page, and I sync my mail using `exchange activesync`. I do this because I can see/edit my contacts via the web gmail page (which is easier/faster than doing it on the phone), and because the mail app is better than the gmail app. But it seems that I have some contact information on my phone which is not visible via the gmail website. To pick one example, it's showing as a `linked contact` between 'exchange' and 'google'. Can I see my exchange contacts online? Where are they? I want them in one place, so I can back them up occasionally (I've already lost my contacts once as I set my phone up). It would seem to make sense, given that some contact info appears to be on exchange somewhere, to have them all there - then I can stop syncing with 'google' on my phone altogether, but I have to be able to see/edit/back them up first.
I've tried googling for this, but all I see is Googles own pages for other platforms, non-free apps to do exchange etc etc.

I have the same issues too
Well i don't use exchange, but i can say how i use my gmail sync:
I use Sync/google account on the definitions menu to sync my google calendar, contacts and mail.
This allows me to use mail on gmail app (not htc mail app), calendar on android calendar (i can use htc calendar widgets) and manage online contacts.
Since i previously added my "phone" contacts to phone memory and to a group on google contacts, they have linked to each other and i can mantain an online and local copy of them (this is great to add a hi res picture to contact, since i add the picture to online and local and then choose local picture to be displayed).
I do know that some fields from online google contacts and local contacts are different, and i think this is as stupid as the picture not having quality on google contacts online, but i hope they would solve it in a near future.
I hope that from now on, since google is saying that the BIG changes on Android are done, they will spend some time dealing with the little details that can be very annoying...
Same issue here.
Sync of Contacts
Google-Contacts -> Desire: works
Desire -> Google-Contacts: dosent work
If i try to add or change a birthday on the phone it does not arrive theo google-contacts account. The other way works. Biggest issue on this fine phone.

Hi, that issues are from Android and Gmail and not from the Desire.
You should add birthday dates to Google contacts or else the synchronization wont work well, but i do agree these are major stuffs that really annoy me!
There could be an interesseting thing.
I have Software-Version 1.15.XXXX (T-Mobile, rooted Phone) and i found an O2 User with 1.20.XXX - he said it works at his phone.

Uau! How can he have an 1.20.xxx? I have unlocked Desire also with 1.15.XXX and no updates for me!
Well I now have 1.21.405.2 updated from ota.
I recently took delivery of my new HTC desire and am well pleased. However, yesterday I noticed something strange which has annoyed me a little
I generally store all my contacts on the exchange server. I synced the desire with the exchange server and it did download all mail, contacts and calendar. I noticed I could set the conacts widget to display contacts within a certain group, so I created a group called Favorites and edited frequent contacts so they appear in that group. I did this in outlook. Also around the same time, the desire linked them up with facebook and got the photos etc. So far, pretty cool
Now the annoying bit, checking my contacts in outlook again, I was horrified to see the entire Favorites group missing I checked my phone and the contacts were there. It is not in my google contact list. I can imagine that it has linked it to facebook or something. My question is how do I know the source for the contact now? I know I added a new contact yesterday and there was an option to specify if the contact should belong to my exchange account or the gmail one and as usual I always add it to my exchange account. Now when I view the new contact in outlook, it has a cateory of 'HTC Favorite' instead of just Favorite, even though the category in the desire says 'Favorite'
Sorry if this is a confusing post, but it has confused the crap out of me. I love the desire but if it is going to move my contacts about it will annoy the living daylights out of me
Anyone has any clues regarding this?
I installed the HTC synch manager, thinking that it would resynch the missing contacts back to my outlook. But to my horror, it has duplicated all the outlook contacts back to the phone. So now I have 2 of each contact. And the required contacts are still missing
I can't delete them all and resynch because I have missing contacts in my outlook and not even sure if it will delete the contacts from the exchange server
Why can't they make it just work, this used to work great with windows mobile, never faced any issues. Anyone know how I can get the source for the contact? and possibly how I can get it back to the exchange server?
Help, please
Okay, so I decide to transfer some contacts from a Nokia 6680 to my Desire, and I did it via Bluetoothing .vcf files from one to the other. Easy enough. Like any good smartphone user, I synced them immediately w/ GMail.
However, after the sync, I opened my Gmail and could not see the newly-synced Nokia contacts. Only the pre-Bluetooth phonebook entries were there. So I did the whole Bluetooth bit again, synced, but the problem remained.
Then I noticed that the phonebook entries that remained were all classified as Google contacts on my Desire (because that's the way I saved them when I inputted them before). These Nokia contacts were saved automatically under "Phone", and so I did not have the option of saving them as Google contacts, and perhaps because of that they couldn't be saved as "syncable" phonebook entries. Neither can the phonebook entries be edited to become Google contacts after saving.
Anyone got any ideas about a remedy to this? I'm about to dispose of the old Nokia, so it'd be good if all my contacts were on GMail, syncable at any time.
Thanks for any help
Go to People press menu then import export, export to sd card and then do the same but import them. When you will import an option with save as google contacs will appear.
When I got my Android phone I exported the Nokia contacts, via outlook, and imported them directly into Gmail on my laptop. It then let me edit and clean up at the same time.
I don't know if this was the most efficient way but it worked for me.
