Hello all. I am new to Android – but have done a little research and I am excited about the possibilities of my new phone. Which is…the HTC Desire A8183 with Telstra Branding and the new ROM that fixed the GPS issue and added voice search.
I imported the phone into the US to use on AT&T’s network. I love the OS, the features, etc. The speed on AT&T’s 3G network is incredible – averaging about 200 kB/s.
My Goal: I want to Root the device and probably apply a stock HTC Rom. The reasons: I want to 1. Remove the Telstra crap; 2. Use it for Wi-Fi tethering; and 3. Install apps to the SD Card.
My issues: When I purchased the phone, it came with what I believe was a stock HTC Desire ROM from Europe. However, the GPS DID NOT WORK. I tried every program I could get my hands on. Does anyone know if the A8183 has a different hardware configuration (other than frequencies) and that is why the GPS did not work on the original Telstra ROM? Of course, the only way I could get the GPS to work was to flash the phone with the Updated Telstra ROM from HTC’s website. Piece of cake. However, now I have this crap from Telstra on my phone.
My predicament regarding rooting and flashing another ROM on to this particular HTC Desire model: It looks like all the guides I have found require you to install a new ROM on to the phone. Will I still have the same GPS issues? Have we found out why the GPS did not work on the original ROM and how they fixed it? If so, has anyone ported that solution into a stock HTC ROM?
To be perfectly honest – I just want this Telstra bloatware gone, wifi tethering, and apps on my SDcard. (Obviously, I want all other functions to work as they should…including GPS) If anyone has possible solutions, my mind is open and I can pretty much respond immediately.
Sorry if I used incorrect terms – I’m new.
In advance – Thanks,
Eric
Have a look at this thread over on MoDaCo android forum, it has the solution to your problem.
BTW, where did you buy your phone from?
OK guys basically many people can not get there bb connect working however on another windows mobile sites VIP area i found a custom edited one working perfect. It will work with 90% windows mobile 5.0 and 99% on 6.0 standerd it has difficulties with PRO not sure about custom roms. it easily connects to wifi or gprs you are able to send messages and receive messages, it also looks exactly same as the original BB interface.
So if you want this and have the xda s620 htc imei reader or if you can help me unlock my phone to all networks i will send you the app if you want to release it here you can
thanks

I just recently purchased the Desire and the same night I rooted my phone with unrevoked. Since then I have been unable to send and receive MMS. Some of my coworkers who got new phones the same day and didn't touch them are able to receive MMS. My question is, do you think that this is because I rooted it, or chance it is a problem with my phone? If it is a problem with the phone, do I have to unroot it before bringing it in to my service provider or do you think they wouldn't notice?
Prob be something to do with the root. Just flash a stock Froyo rom and it should be alright. Just make sure you do a nandroid backup first just to be safe
I had the same issue with my Desire, but managed to fix it just yesterday.
Find the homepage for your provider and they normally have a guide for setting up MMS, which is, normally in the case of HTC Desire, automatic. But if you try see the manual set-up for non-supported phones and you enter those values/data, it's all gravy again
Sounds like a pretty common problem with small providers. I tried looking around and was unable to find any settings on the website...
Try see if you can Google it. I noticed that there are sites which are dedicated to collecting all the settings of different providers (definitely here in DK) and making them accessible in tables.

Man...I've been trying to find it but I can't....I have cellcom (usa-Wisconsin) maybe someone else can help me locate something.

Okay, I also tried seeing if I could find the settings for cellcom in the States and no luck: just Israel. Also not a very informative webpage for cellcom either.
If you don't want to unroot your phone etc. I would think contacting the company by mail and asking for the manual settings might pay off. I'm pretty sure this is the issue as mms and internet settings are automatically set-up for each phone model in some providers and rooting might have removed the settings from identifying it as an HTC Desire, though I have no way to be sure.
So you should receive a reply with the MMS proxy and port, the MMSC and APN.
It definitely worked for me.
Hope it all works out!

thanks for your quick reply,
as I am newbie would you please help me with link for right BBconnect version and a tuorial if possible.
many thanks for your helpful support.
Your data plan is with your phone operator, so by putting your sim in to a desire it should still be ok, as for using your BB mail as long as it is a POP3 mail account it will be ok as it can be set up on any software. As for blackberry software that will not run on Android nor would BB let it be run on any other device.

My operator let me connect to BB service using my BB phone pin number, I think it will not work automatically without soft like bbconnect ?
Is your network gsm or cdma?

my network is GSM
I've been thinking of buying an HTC Desire for testing purposes with ROMs and such so I don't have to keep unloading and reloading my phone too much. Of course, I wouldn't activate the new 'test' phone.
If I buy a Desire and don't activate it, will I be able to do everything that doesn't require connection to a network? I know I won't be able to call/txt. Will I still be able to use wifi?

No, the phone will work without a SIM.
Thanks, bortak!
