tricking websites to provent them showing me the mobile or iphone version - Desire General

Is there a way I can access websites on my HTC desire - but instead of these clever websites 'recognising' I am using a mobile device (and therefore automatically showing me their mobile/iphone version) I jst want to see the normal website!
Ebay is a great example but there are others.
Cheers

I think there's an option for your browser to choose between mobile/normal webpage versions

If they are still showing as mobile even with mobile view turned off you can change a setting in the debug.
First you need to type about:debug in the browser to activate the settings, then go into the settings menu and scroll down until you find 'UAString', if you click that you will have the option to choose between; Android; Desktop and iPhone. If you choose Desktop it should stop displaying mobile websites.

about:debug doesn't do anything on my browser?
Doh, read it properly and I figured it out!!
Any more secret settings that are available in Android that I don't know about?
Is there anyway you can apply certain User Agents to specific bookmarks? I prefer some iphone versions of sites, and would like them to automatically go to that version when I click the bookmark, but would like the default to be Android?

Try Dolphin HD or skyfire they have the option and easy to change

type about:debug and hit enter. it won't do anything, but then go menu -> more -> settings and you should have a 'debug' section at the bottom of the normal settings. if it doesn't work first time try it again.

Thanks! I had to try several times until it worked but eventually it did.
Now I have to figure out what all those settings are, especially this one.
Code:
Set default wrap ratio after smart zoom
Anybody knows exactly what it does?!

Bing, Bong, hello!! Got opera as default through Reg Edit!!!!!!!!

I know some of us were having problems setting Opera to default through the Opera settings, so i set out to figure a way around it. So now when you go to your internet tab, you can go straight to Opera instead of to the programs list.
heres how:
-open your Registry Editor
-navigate to HKCU/Software/HTC/Manila
-change value in DefaultBrowserIsIE from "1" to "0"
-change value in Internet.SetOperaForeground from "0" to "1"
click save. and youre good to go.:].
glad i could contribute to the website. .
Good looks!
What about when you click a link from your email? IE still launches from links that leads to the browser.
Worked like a charm! Thanx OP! Anyone daring enough to test the push internet keys listed in there?
Nice going awesome find!
The earth goes to opera.. but the bookmarks go to IE? thats weird.
am i missing something i thought opera was the default browser, it is on my uk un branded TP2

This is for T-Mobile TP2's only. T-Mobile always ****s things up.
But to the one that asked, links in E-Mails go through the default browser, which is now Opera Mobile.

How do we change those bookmarks? I don't know how, they seem to be tied to the IE browser favorites. Can they be edited or linked to a different location?

Go into Opera Mobile, and in the address bar (clear out everything), type in opera:config and press enter.
You can go through the settings there. I think it's under Advanced? I forget. But check the box for default browser. Then save the settings and close out of Opera Mobile. Now see if it's default. You might have 2 repeat that a few times for it to take effect, for some reason. (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=547750)

THANKS! Took about 4 times but it finally took!
maybe if you try deleting them, and then choosing your favorites in Opera. Then maybe they'll go to the Internet tab? worth a try. .
Yeah let us know how that went.
EDIT: How do you delete the bookmarks? I removed all the favorites from IE. I still see CNN, ESPN and Facebook. How am I able to add my own?

[Q] Only mobile versions of websites?

How do I set my Tilt 2 to only load regular websites and not the mobile versions? I have tried a multiple browsers, set them to not load mobile and they still load mobile. Is it a setting within the phone itself?
Hi there,
It is indeed a settings option
- open opera and type: opera:config
- scroll down to "user prefs"
- scroll all the way down to "UAProf URL Enabled" and uncheck that box
- scroll down a little more and save "user Prefs"
- restart opera
& you are set 2 go!

I wished that had worked for me. I've tried just about every fix listed on these forums, and the only way to get full sites on my tilt2 is to tag ?m=false onto every non mobile page I want to load. Engadget and CNN are the two I am always testing on.

hard luck bro, try iris browser or skyfire..
btw wat do u mean by ?m=false where to tag this to c complete website
I happen to be on the opposite end. I wish the browser will automatically detect if it has a mobile version but for some reason, my phone always loads just whatever I type on the url. In order for me to load the mobile version, I always have to add m.
Is there anyway that even if I type like engadget.com, it will load m.engadget.com. It's just easier instead of having to add that m.
I think the original rom always tries to load the mobile version because htc probably made change to the preference or code but the energy rom which has the updated stock opera will load the full version by default unless you add the m.

it tags onto the end of the site url after the "/" or after ".html"... but I just checked, it looks like whether or not is works is site specific. Works fine on Engadget (which is what I browse frequently) but not CNN.
I do use skyfire, but it just seems to me that it has been getting consistently slower in page loads/refreshes when scrolling and more prone to timeouts over the last year. I had thought updating from the older version would help, but it seems about the same.

[Q] Browsing option, request desktop version

One of the new feature of ICS is the ability to request desktop version when browsing the internet websites.
How does it works?
I mean, does it apply for one web page only?
Or the entire website domain?
Or the entire browsing session?
Thanks
It just requests the desktop version of that page that you're currently looking on. Nothing else.
All it does is requests the same page again with the UAstring of 'desktop' rather than the default 'android'.
Crap ... That mean we need to request every time for other pages.
Oh well, better than nothing.

There's probably an option under labs in the settings to always request desktop pages by default. Not sure though.
At least it's there. It's better than typing about:debug and fiddling with settings.
From the video below, I saw a checkbox in the Request desktop version of the ICS web browser. Does it mean that it works for the entire sessions or all the time?
That is nice!
http://www.droid-life.com/2011/11/2...-controls-movie-editor-and-new-voice-to-text/
Can someone with GN explain this feature?
it doesn't stay persistent all the time (i.e. if you set it, then close all tabs and close the browser and come back later, the checkbox will be unchecked).

Simple question regarding browser

Getting a bit fed up of the browser showing me mobile versions of the sites I'm visiting and then having to request the real version via settings.
Any way to force real web sites all the time, I sure can't find the setting :-(
Thanks for your help!

Many sites will sniff your user agent to try to give you what they think is their best experience for mobile devices. You would need a way to hack the user agent to something non-Android to get good coverage. As a developer it's a pain in the ass to keep up with agent rules.
I personally like the sites that set a cookie so you can choose yourself without getting cornered.
Sent from my Nexus S using Tapatalk
I think you should use this option only when the site offers no button to switch to the desktop site. Because when you use the option the site offers it normally sets a cookie to bring you back to the desktop site when you come back the next time.
Ah, was hoping for some super settings like my desire had where you could spoof the agent.

There is a Request Desktop Site in the browser settings. Haven't used it myself, but it sounds like it's what you're looking for. Or is it not?
You should be able to use the labs section to force a desktop UAstring always.
i know on Gingerbread you can type "about:debug" in the browser address bar (no quotations - nothing should happen after)
but when you go into your browser settings there are additional debug menus and there should be a User Agent setting there where you can set to "Desktop"
I'm not sure if ICS has it cause my GN isnt here yet
ahha you can give it a try
Just click on Menu, Settings, Debug... the UAString is in there.
I use third party browsers, most of them allow you to change your user agent. I recommend dolphin if you want to try one.

Yeah, the about:debug method has been there since the first Nexus. I can't confirm due to not having my phone yet, but it should still be there.
ics has a setting that you can select and it will always pull up the desktop version of the site which is really nice.
The stock broswer is pretty good on full sites. I have mine set to Linux agent. Mobile sites usually give me fits.

about:debug - is it meant to bring up a page like about:config in Firefox? If so then it doesn't work. As mentioned in a previous post, I have the debug option in the normal menus... perhaps about:debug or some of the other abouts I tried when I first got the device unlocked this, or perhaps it is there as standard.
Either way, you can change the UAString in there to Desktop.
People who are commenting that there is an ICS option to "load as desktop" - there is, but this means you still get the mobile pages quite often and then have to reload the page. The OP wanted something to just always open as Desktop... which UAString will do.
Cheers all, had to do about:debug in browser and then debug appeared in the menu. Sorted now!

typing about:debug doesn't do anything immediately in the page. It just enables the debug menu in the settings of the browser.
Noticed after applying this setting that some sites still load as the mobile version. Amazon.co.uk for one.
Any thoughts?

[Q] Search in a web browser like in desktop Chrome?

Anyone who uses Chrome on their PC will know what I mean when I say is there any Android browser that allows you to search different websites from the navigation bar? For instance in desktop Chrome if you want to search youtube for Lady Gaga you just type in "youtube.com Lady Gaga". Is there any Android web browser with that kind of functionality? Android Chrome doesn't seem to do it.
Thanks for any help.

I use the stock browser and Chrome in that way with no problems. I think, there is something wrong with your settings.
I just reinstalled Chrome on my phone and typed in "youtube.com Lady Gaga" and it didn't work, it just searched on Google. Is there a setting you have to turn on?
As far as I know, the mobile version is fairly new and didn't see any options to enable it. Desktop chrome came with it already functional. The only mobile variation I found was using Firefox w/ the youtube add-on. Which sucks because I hate Firefox.
I love the dolphin browser you should try that one not sure what you are trying to do.

In Chrome on desktop, you can / have to go to options / search settings and set up these shortcuts (if not already present). I've only just started with new Android device - I assume there is a similar place to set such on handheld. e.g. On my desktop, type 'w' 'p' '<space>' auto-changes the address line to 'search wikipedia' (or like wording). I assume you see the same on your desktop when you type 'youtube.com', as per your message.
If nothing else, you can do '"lady gaga" site:youtube.com", in the mean time.
