Is Hard SPL required to flash a custom ROM to the Dash? - HTC Excalibur

Okay, so I've NEVER flashed a custom ROM to ANY phone, but I want to mess with 6.1 on the Dash. I'm not exactly sure what Hard SPL is, but I keep getting told that if I were to flash anything to my Dash 3G, that I'd need it. However, I never see anything about Hard SPL for the original Dash.
So my questions are: Does the original Dash need any form of Hard SPL, or can I just flash a custom ROM? And after I flash the custom ROM, can I go back to the T-Mobile stock ROM if I wish just by flashing it the way I would any T-Mobile update?
Thanks, everyone. Sorry for all the n00bish questions.

from my knowledge and i've flashed my Dash many times you just need SDA unlock to unlock your phone and then you can flash a ROM and you can revert to the stock ROM at any time, in the main section of this forum read the sticky [the top thread] and you'll find everything you need to know how to flash for a n00b.
:]

If you are still not sure and you don't want to take a risk click here.
Excalibur Update SPL (USPL) 1.11 (Hard-SPL that will save you from having to flash the correct Model & Vendor ID if semi bricked device)
After this you will be able to flash any cooked or official rom.

Thanks, to both of you. I feel a bit more confident about this stuff now. :-D

SPL - Service Providor Lock. Your phone has a SPL in place to prevent you from flashing a ROM from another providor for example. By Flashing Hard-SPL - you permanently remove the SPL check when flashing a ROM thereby allowing you to flash any ROM that is designed for your device.
You can use Soft-SPL which will prevent the check from happening when you flash on a once only basis. If you have a problem during the upgrade - the ONLY way to recover you phone is by flashing the original ROM. Therefore if you don't have the original ROM to hand - Hard-SPL is highly recommended! It allows you to flash another ROM if you have a problem during a flash - thereby recovering your device.

Flashing a cooked rom - further tips

As a number of you are having problems flashing cooked roms I put up this sticky.
1. If you presently run a factory wm5\wm6 rom then uspl cid unlock (step 1 in my roms) your rom before you flash cooked rom.
2. If you have a cooked rom on your device already and are changing to another cooked rom (especially if rom is from a different cook) i would recommend you:
a) flash back to factory rom first
b) then cid unlock
c) then flash the new cooked rom.
This is because sometimes the new cooked rom does not function 100% on first flash and a repeat flash is required.
3.Alternatively (especially if you dont have access to the factory rom) flash the new cooked rom twice to be sure new rom has taken properly and if device is already cid unlocked there is no need to cid unlock again.
Thanks for your hard work
Yes flashing twice works!!!
Thanks
Thanks Meschle
No Navigation application included in ROMs
Maybe this is also interestening for newbies;
there is no TomTom or iGo in the ROMs included (this is a often asked question)
but you can download TomTom from their website for free (you only have to pay for the maps)
After installing TomTom - just insert your TomTom CD and install your maps from there.

Hi guys, I'd like to try one of your cooked roms but unless I tried to gather infos from the forum I still have some doubts....
First of all... the cid unlock procedure is needed only for the devices that are operator branded right? I mean if I have a normal HTC no brand I don't need to do this step... is this correct?
And last but not least.. how can I flash back to the factory rom??? Is the procedure the same? I tried to find my original rom but I couldn't... Does anyone can help me in finding it? (I've got the italian rom installed).
Thanks to everybody...

Before you start to cook your own rom...
May I add that's also very important to have been through the whole process (at least one time) of recooking an original rom without adding/removing anything ?!
That's the price we need to pay in order to achieve successfull rom cooking !

Just like to add that sometimes the ROM file renames itself to an N file even if you rename it back to a NBH file so watch for that before flashing cooked ROMs
using the ROM Update utility, how do I get it to choses the correct rom file. Cooked one with extended rom how do I get tit to choose this file?

The above questions asked are really important for the ppl flashing their ROMs for the 1st time. I want to add some more questions
- How to put the original ROM back on the device.. (could not find the steps for the same)
- CID unlock. If i put the original ROM back on the device, will it automatically take care of the CID which was unlocked before (to flash the cooked ROMs)?
- Is there any way we can see CID info on the mobile?

to put the original ROM just get it and flash it when needed
and when flashing it it don't need CID unlock or anything and it will bring back your device to original SPL, IPL, Radio and ofcourse the OS

Since you're not giving any details I don't know what your exact issue is. It depends on your Phone and where you got it.
Most likely your issue can be resolved by reading the thread which I link to in my signature.

If you HardSPL you wont be able to install a standard HTC ROM without some faffing, I had this problem this week, so if your 1.93 is the released Standard OEM HTC one then dont HardSPL whatever you do.
thanks alot guys. what a quick response. and sorry for the caps lock if it got u confused.
as far as the details of the phone is concerened. its an orange UK contract phone with the ROM version 1.37.405.1 WWE radio 1.00.25.03. the phone hasnt been flashed at all. i did try to flash it to _QMR_RUU_Diamond_HTC_WWE_1.93.405.1_Radio_Signed_Diamond_52.29.25.12_1.00.25.05_Ship.exe but was unable to. i guess i should have hard spl it before.
i m guessing the only thing i need to do is to hard spl it right. or do i need to do something else as well.
again thanks alot guys for the quick responses.
hi tony.
i have actually tried to do it without hard spl but it would get stuck on 1%. is there any other way to do it. i believe the ROM i m trying to flash to is an official one as far as the thread i downloaded it from is concerend.
one thing to clear here. its the first time i m trying to flash from 1.37 to 1.93 official rom. could someone confirm that there is a 1.93... official rom available or is it one of the cooked ones. and could one confirm as well that i need to hard spl even flashing from oficial to official rom. coz two post before tony mentioned not to hard spl.
any ideas guys. thanks
Here's what I've just done, I hope it helps -
Vodafone UK to UK release HTC ROM.
1. I read the info here, over and over and asked lots of questions.
2. I checked the current SPL of my fone (Volume Down & Reset) and found I had 1.37.
3. Downloaded Hard SPL 1.37 UnSigned and installed it - Here was my first problem. Everyone just says use RUU to install hard SPL however the SPL's I downloaded didn't come with RUU so I took a guess and decided that RUU was a generic flasher which could also flash the SPL for me.
4. Use RUU to flash the SPL, mine reported V1.0 as the new ROM version but installed and rebooted perfectly to reveal the coloured screen informng that I did now have a Cooked SPL installed.
5. Followed the fisrt startup procedure that the phone asked me to do.
6. Flashed the new ROM in a similar way to flashing the Hard SPL.
7. Phone flashed ok and I'm just in the process of setting it up now.
One issue I did have was using Vista I had to right click and run as Administrator to make it work.

wrong. if you use unsigned hardspl (aka "developer hardspl") it will flash HTC ROMs just fine
1.93 is also unsigned.

who's "everyone"? this information is totally wrong, wrong, wrong.
next time you download an attachment from a post, read the post where the attachment was, and you won't have this problem (the post that had the unsigned hardspl 1.37 also talked about where to get the special SSPL RUU for it - have a guess. it is in the same post in another attachment).

First of all, opening a thread is not the right thing to do for asking advice. about hard spl that means that you can flash whatever you want how many times you want without any restrictions you will not brick your phone if you do everything properly. by saying flashing everything you want I mean flashing everything from the DIAMOND FORUM. Please do not try to flash anything made for other devices. And next time ask the questions in its right place on this case you should have asked on the HARD SPL thread. Happy Flashing!

[Q] - Rom flashing help needed

I'm a new diamond (DIAM100) user and i'm having so many doubts about flashing a new custom ROM and all related to HardSPL and stuff.
This is my 3rd PPC and i've been flashing custom rom's for years in my Polaris (i've even cooked some myself) and it was very simple.
Now for Diamond, there's so many HardSpls, each with so many pros and cons that it's so very confusing. I've been reeding this forum for a week and i haven's still cleared up my mind.
So i would appreciate a little help from more experienced users.
Here's the deal: My Diamond (my father in law gave it to me as he doesn't use it any more and my Polaris has become very instable) shows this at bootloader:
DIAM100 64M
SPL-2.03.0000
MicroP-Diam (LED) v11
PSOC-Diam STAGE_PVT v0x32
It has the last oficial portuguese rom (2.03) and radio 1.09.
In the forum i've found olinex's SPL but its only 1.93. - (Q1) Can i flash this SPL and so unlock the device, flash a new custom rom and then flash back the original 2.03 SPL, thus locking it again?
(Q2) To update the radio to a new version is there any special requirments?
(Q3) Would aprecciate if any diamond experienced user posted some help on How-To upgrade my diamond based on his self experience and point me to the right tools.
TIA
Lets start...
Okay. So flashing a Diamond for the first time with a new HSPL and ROM is pretty confusing at start. But when you get the hang of it, you would know this cudnt have been easier...
This tutorial is based on my experience and on actual procedure. Still, you can take a look around this tutorial as well. Click here
This tutorial is divided in 3 main parts.
1. Flashing the HSPL 1.93
HSPL 1.93 is by far the best HSPL you will ever get. Most of the ROM chefs in their prerequisite have also recommended HSPL 1.93. If you find this hard to believe, see for yourself in the Diamond ROM development section.
Okay. So download is HERE For details abt this HSPL read from this link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=400950
a) Put your device into Bootloader mode.
b) Flash away using the RUU
Now you have got HSPL, why the H, because it stands for HARD, means now if you load your official ROM 2.03, this HSPL will not be overwritten.
And believe me, i have flashed HSPL 1.93 and using the official ROM 1.93 WWE along with it.
AND i have NOT faced ANY problems at all
Plus! There seems to be a screen flciker problem with SPL 1.40. So dont flash HSPL 1.40. I can guarantee from my usage 1.93 is the best.
Moving ON!
2) Flashing a CUSTOM ROM (Need to do mtty)
a) Now see, this is the part where the initial headache comes. Cos every cook recommends that you do a mtty format on your Diamond before you flash their custom ROMs. What the hell is mtty and why do you need it so badly.
Answer: Suppose you dont care abt mtty and you flash a Custom ROM. Then you experience sudden freezes on your device and even a few resets also. And even before that gets started, You might not be able to flash the Custom ROM at all, because somehow the flashing gets stuck at maybe 3% or X%
Is the Chef to Blame? Nope! This is where mtty solution Jumps in.
So the next step is to read and format your device with mtty. READ HERE THOROUGHLY and FOLLOW THE METHOD MENTIONED Depending on your Computer Operating System!
b) MTTY DUDE RIGHT HERE
3) FINALLY, time for a CUSTOM ROM!
Oh! SO you done with mtty and reading this part eh? Well what are ya waiting for.
Since you formatted your device using mtty, keep your device in Bootloader mode
a) NOW flash any custom ROM which you want to flash.
b) AND if you want to flash another custom ROM again, you have to do mtty again
WHY?
Because Custom ROMS vary in size and take different sizes on the flashable part of your Diamond. When the current rom which you want to flash is smaller than the existing ROM in your Diamond, this can cause some problems. This is the reason you needed to do mtty in second step above.
And even if the case was vice versa in the matter of size, i would recommend doing mtty.
NOW Answers to your questions!
UNLOCKING and RELOCKING
Q1) Ofcoz! Indeed! Once you flash a Custom via the USE of an HSPL, you can revert back to your locked SPL. Havent caught the sight of a SPL 2.03 available here. But still this forum is full of suprising stuffs. So look around..
SO if you are reverting back to a locked SPL, then after flashing of your custom ROM is DONE! you will need these to erase away the HSPL, which wud not go even if you do an a flash from your official ROM. Because it is protected. SO read a similar case presented in this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=504675 and download the attachment in the 3rd POST. (I recommend this link and attachment than the link i am providing below)
Also a similar post abt returning to stock SPL is here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=2324829&postcount=39
If you are following the second scenario, in the case of Stock SPL 1.93 you wud need stock SPL 2.03
RADIO
Q2) There is no special requirement apart from unlocking your device with an HSPL. Once you complete the HSPL (Unlocking section) you are done! You can flash any number of RADIO and Custom ROMs which you want to check. Just remember to give your Diamond a lil rest. And Oh! one Radio and Custom rom at a time.
Q3) I hope most of your doubts have been cleared and you are confident to flash now.
Still if you need any help please post back or PM me. I may not reply soon, but still i would come around every 6-9 hours. Oh yeah i m a student!
Thanks for the reply, very complete and useful and a confirmation to what i was thinking. Thank you again.
I did find a 2.03 SPL in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=3359191&postcount=390 and i've dumped my own as per http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=2460876&postcount=3. Just don't know if it is the correct adress to 2.03 SPL.
Anyhow here's what i'm thinking:
1- Flash olinex 1.93 HardSLP
2- Flash custom ROM
3- Flash 2.03SPL back
Well the 3rd step may not be immediatly after step 2. I may want to try som other roms. But from what i've read it's best to have the latest SPL on your device.
By the way, what 6.5 rom's with bottom start button keep the same functions as the stock Diamond rom as when one pulls the stylus out while on a call it'll open notes, mute the ring when faced down, etc.
On call - stylus out - notes open is basically a feature available with the type of Phone Canvas version in the rom. You can try any of the below threads to get a suitable rom. These are the ones i have tried so far. There are some more 6.5 ROMs available also.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=611011
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=765247
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=517300
I think the mute option can be enabled by changing a registry value in the diamond, because it is dependent on g-sensor and light sensor, and irrespective of the ROM.
Good that you found my guide useful. I just checked that link for 2.03 SPL. Appears valid. Only when you try you will know. And yep what you say is correct. I also go with the latest updates. But somethings are really good i just get stuck with them, like my 1.93
Today i jus cooked a rom from my 1.93 stock. Removed some stuffs like customer feedback, error reporting and disabled security on installation of unsigned cabs.
I may post it online along with link to kitchen. The kitchen is very basic and so simple, i cooked my rom in 5-10mins max
