Unable to go into Recovery after Root? - Desire General

Hi peeps, sorry a total newbie to Android here.
I thought I had successfully 'rooted' my HTC Desire last night. However, upon trying to get into Recovery I just get the Red Triangle screen.
I bought my Desire off contract (no need for Goldcard).
Any ideas?

It will do that, u need to run step2 each time u wanna get into recovery

Oh! That simple.
Thanks EddyOS!

[Q] Can not complete root :(

Hello All
Having tried to do all my research before getting my new desire, which came today i was quite confident that rooting would go smoothly. How wrong i was..
The Problem is...
I have changed the hboot as you have to with unrevoked and also changed the recovery image as my phone is the slcd version (0.83). However when running unrevoked, and having now completed the 4th attempt, Unrevoked continuously stops an waiting for 5 second after the recovery image is being put on.
Somebody please help, i have gone through the forum and can not seem to find what can help me overcome this problem
Thank you
David
From what I gathered in the unrevoked thread, slcd is not fully supported, might take a few days. Are you sure you have the latest version?
There is another thread (or 2,3,4) in development about slcd and rooting, did you read them?
Download a Ubuntu live cd. Boot up.in it and use unrevoked in Linux.
http://rootmydroid.co.uk/guides/desire/howtolinux-root-your-desire-using-unrevoked-in-linux/
That method worked sweet for me.
For whatever reason unrevoked on windows wasn't as easy as Linux.

Clockwork supports slcd now.

Thanks guys, all is sorted now. I just ran unrevoked without a custom recovery image and everything worked out. Took nearly have a day but i got there.
Now struggling with the partition in clockworkmod, as soon as i select partition sd in rom manager it reboots and goes straight to an exclamation mark in a white triangle and an android bot just below it.
How would i overcome this?

I was S-off, I installed rc3, when I saw the rc4 I download it via rom manager, when I click to install i click wipe data and ask for recovery i click yes, then stuck n the white and green letters, the funny thing is that my phone is S-on now..
But all my root applications works... is so confusing!

S-OFF hasn't got anything to do with root, other than you need root to get to S-OFF. So your phone has gone back to S-ON but is still rooted, that's why you can't flash any custom ROMs.
How did you get to S-OFF, was that the "old" method of dd'ing the eng hboot ? Or did you use the new gfree method ?
I did the old method, using terminal... do I have to do that again? because im still have cyanogen rc3 up.
There's a new method to do it now, using a program called "gfree". See http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=855764 for the details.
But you're saying you can't boot the phone right now ?

this is so pro for me... I think I will wait for a easy way!!! thanks a lot for your help!!!!!!!!
Can you tell me what the benefit. Of the "new" way is over the "old" way? I used the old way and have had no problems... but is there something that might come up? I've yet to root my wife's G2, should I use the new method?

The method of rooting hasn't changed (either Visionary or rage). But there's a new way to get S-OFF, which also gets you other things too (like SIM unlock). The new way (gfree) of getting S-OFF is a lot safer than the old method (less chance of bricking if you flash the wrong ROM, and easier to recover from semi-bricks), so I strongly recommend you go that way.

Unroot failed, now phone is stuck in Fastboot loop

Hi Guys, I posted this in Android Software and Hacking General, but I didn't get a reply. Probably the wrong section!
my HTC Desire GSM is stuck in Fastboot and won't boot into the ROM. The background to this issue is that I installed S-Off and then ClockworkMod and flashed Cyogenmod 7 to see if it would fix a reboot issue on the phone. The damn thing just reboots itself when the CPU is used heavily...
Anywho, after realising that Cyogen wouldn't resolve the issue I flashed the standard Virgin UK rom back over it and upgraded to 2.22.351.2 via the system update feature. The problem was that ClockwordMod was still installed and I had to get rid of it to sent the phone off for repair to Virgin!
So I did further research and found that I could flash HBoot via the AlphaRev.nl downgrader tool. I downloaded it and popped it into the root of my SD card and it flashed the bootloader back to Hboot 0.80.0000. That should have been it, but all of the sudden the phone no longer boots into the Rom. All it does is to power on and then go into Fastboot. That's it! When I try putting the standard Virgin Rom back onto the SD it tries to load it and then says "Main Version is older!" "Update Fail!".
How do I get around this now? The phone doesn't boot, so I can't re-flash S-Off and start again, not am I able to run the stock Virgin Rom within Windows because it complains about the versions.
Is there any ways around this situation? I just want to get the phone back to stock so I can send it to Virgin and get it repaired.
P.S. I *have* used the search function and spent the last 4 hours testing various things but I'm now stuck.
Cheers Guys!
Mich
Well you obviously fckd up with the Downgrader, you should have run it first BEFORE RUU. Also did you flashed Stock Hboot prior to Downgrader? (if you used CM7 earlier)
I never played around with the hboot downgrading etc. so i wont be able to help you but im sure there is some workaround...
as your returning your phone anyway why don't you try the official HTC gingerbread update from the HTC developer site (sorry I don't have a link). It should return your phone to stock and when you get it back you need to use revolutionary to get s-off back. Also, there is a sticky from user bortac which has loads of help and trouble shooting advice.

Any advice that uses the 2.3.3 RUU to fix something is plain bad advice - it can just make your problem a LOT worse.
@OP Go onto my guide, look at RUU problems for help
What you need to do:
-Make a goldcard (there is a tutorial there)
-Flash the WWE RUU
Guys, upgrading to Gingerbread has actually brought the phone back from the dead! =) And I can now return it to Virgin to get it repaired properly. The symptoms are that while the phone is plugged in and charging, and I'm doing stuff (taxing the CPU), the phone will eventually simply rebooting itself. Just *BANG*! And it's gone. And once it starts it's a bit of a run-away thing and just keeps on doing it until you leave the phone alone for a bit. Virgin had a look at it and simply re-flashed it, thinking that they could away with that. Typical, overworked, non-creative call centre workers..... I'm well pissed off with them!
Gonna send it back next week and force them to swap the motherboard or something, cause this is a serious fault with the phone.

I think I ALMOST bricked it :-<

Ok guys, first of all I'll explain everything from the start.
Back in November I used AAHK to root, ENG S-OFF etc. my phone so that I could flash a custom rom. Installed Android Revolution HD.
A month ago or so I found the IceColdSandwich rom so I NAND-ed my AR and fresh installed that. And I kept switching between the 2 of them from time to time.
Found that there's a free download of clockworkmod touch on their website, but I couldn't flash it via fastboot. Gives me this:
sending 'recovery' (3554 KB) ... OKAY [0.641s]
writing 'recovery' ... FAILED (remote: not allowed)
Same thing happened when I tried to flash a new radio.
Stupid me, I reinstalled the recovery from ROM Manager again in the process as a last resort (dunno why I thought it would work >.< ).
Now the problems start, I was running AR 6.3.1 last night and I wanted to update the ICS rom, so I made a backup to AR rom and wanted to restore the ICS one. Told me the md5 wasn't correct or something. I instantly thought "GAH, probably because I reinstalled recovery." so I decided to finally install the clockworkmod touch if I had allready ****ed it up. Got the same bloody error:
"FAILED (remote: not allowed)"
So what did stupid old me think then? "Yeah, maybe I didn't ace hack it right the first time..." so I decided to use AAHK again. Logged in Linux, started the kit. All fine and well, said there "Rebooting, please wait". I was like "MMkay, I guess it will take a bit, I'm gonna go do something else" and forgot about it for a couple of hours. 2 hours later, same message in terminal, my phone still had the white background with HTC logo on it.
Ok, don't panic, what to do, what to do...disconnected my phone, pulled out the battery, rebooted into h-boot, hit recovery. The horror of it not being there
Rebooted into bootloader again, tried to flash recovery again, still the same message.
While I was there, desperately tried "Factory Reset", shows me a screen with a loading bar or something and next to it a micro sd card with upload download arrows on it (up and down arrows). Afterwords it proceeds to rebooting my phone 3 times and then it dies. Do I need some kind of file on my SD card for it to work or something?
I think I bricked it. :-<
Sorry for the long post.
Any kind of help is apreciated. Thanks guys
PS: H-BOOT says:
ACE PUT SHIP S-OFF RL
HBOOT-0.85.0024
MICROP-0438

Hey dude.
Just a quick post, you have not bricked your phone so don't panic.
More in a mo.
Greg.

Search this forum for a stock PD98IMG.Zip ideally a 1.32 one.
Copy this to your sd card, then boot into hboot.
Hopefully hboot will recognise the image and install it on your phone.
Can anyone qualify/dispute this?
Cheers.
Greg

Thanks Greg. I'll find the image and tell you in a min if it worked
It has to be an RUU that fits your phone. Do NOT flash a froyo RUU on a phone that was shipped with stock gb. An RUU will revert the phone to stock. After that you should have no probs running AAHK again to gain s off.

Bought my phone in December 2010, it was shipped with Froyo 2.2. I updated it myself to Gingerbread (only later I found out how dumb that was) so I guess it's okay if I flash a 1.32, right?
Good Guy Greg, I love you man I can use my phone again, thank you so very much!
I have just a question though. Is it by any chance possible to create a PD98IMG.Zip to revert my phone to something more recent? Can I use it to create something like a NAND backup?

Glad to help dude.
I think that as long as your phone turns on, even if it bootloops etc... you haven't bricked it.
I think it is possible, but I'm not totally sure how to create a PD98IMG.ZIP.
But I'd suggest is you want something more recent, just flash a new ROM.
Once you are back to stock (this may have broken root) check to see if you're still rooted, if not re root and use CWM Recovery to flash whatever ROM you want.
Regards.
Greg.

Thanks again, mate I used the AAHK again and I flashed my old rom back, but I still can't flash a different radio or the touch recovery...same error: "writing 'recovery' ... FAILED (remote: not allowed)"
Oh well, glad to have my phone back :>
You can't flash a radio with the way you are doing it (ie fastboot) unless you have the engineering bootloader (Eng soff). For.those of us with just soff we flash them via a pd98img formatted zip. Much easier in.my opinion as you can flash a radio without a PC.
One thing to note is that if your phone cane shipped with gb, DO NOT install the engineering bootloader as it will mess you up big time and cause your phone to.take30 min to boot up. Its fixable but its a pita

It's not fun if I don't do it myself It's like saying "Yeah, you ****ed up your phone, better take it to the local repair guy" but thanks to you I learned how to downgrade my phone back to stock and start over, even if I dont have recovery installed any more. I consider learning from trial and error better than having people do it for you...that and I've always wanted to learn to flash .img files like recovery, radios, 4ext themes etc. But I'm glad to report that I have ENG S-OFFed my phone since then and flashed all I need :>
Thanks again, Greg :>
I get what you are saying dude.
But there's no harm in supporting a developer.
Cheers dude.

Desire HD brick
Hi, I have similar problem as dragancla with small differences.
I did root my Desire HD too, but in Ace advanced hack kit. I di mSD card as goldcard, next a put PD98IMG.zip (1.32.X) on sdcard. Then I started with root first three steps going well. After succesfully installing root, clockworkmod and first radio start next step flash new radio and here was the problem. Connection with PC fell and flashing was stoped. Now I have only black background without any mark of starting of device. Only orange LED flashes.
I tryed to remove battery and wait 10 minutes but without any succes.
Please can you help me with this problem?
That sounds like a hard brick.
And what can I do with it?
DO you know?
Brick DHD
Today I have a small changes in the device settings.
When I pushed it to recharger then device start to recovery but only for a few seconds. I can install retore or update but I have so short time for it, then every installation ends in black screen.
If somebody know something about this problem, please help me.

It's kinda hard to know what's going on with the information provided, but you can come and hit the Hack Kit IRC Channnel to see if we can help...

I think I bricked my phone

Ok so I was getting sick of how clunky my phone was getting so I decided to learn how to update my phone to a higher version of android.
After hours or searching about S-off and rooting (yes I am very new to this) I managed to downgrade to 2.2 and root the phone, I was still trying to S-Off the phone, however I stepped past this and dropped an IMG file, supposed to be for my phone on the SD card and tried to install it using ClockWorkMod v3.0.2.4.
After this I noticed my backup failed and then I became impatient and stupid by installing the IMG file which has now left my phone on the white HTC screen.
Can anyone offer me some help in getting my phone working again??
Thanks in advance.
