Hi,
Seen various SD card problems posted here and other forums but no solutions.
A few nights ago I was transferring a large number of files to my Desire and noticed the transfer windows froze so I disconnected my phone. When I then tried to turn the screen on it wouldn't turn on (though the led kept blinking). I eventually had to restart the phone by removing the battery.
Upon restarting I got an error saying the SD card was corrupted and needed to be formatted. Tried restarting again etc but didn't work so clicked on 'format' in the pop-up but nothing happened even after several attempts. Then tried doing this through the settings menu but again didn't work.
Gave up. Wake up next morning and phone screen won't come on again. Took out battery again and still had memory card problem so connected to pc and formatted card on there. I think after this the card started working again but WITH ALL THE DATA STILL ON IT. No idea how!?
This morning after 4 days working fine I connect phone to pc to transfer music and don't get an option to mount USB so I unplugged and get a new SD card error: blank SD card. SD card blank or has unsupported file system. So tried everything I tried last time but this time I can't mount the card so I can't access it on a pc to format it.
Anyone had similar problems on here? Seems to have happened to quite a few on Android forums etc. Any suggestions? Have tried putting card in and out several times. Have tried SD mount widget. Getting pretty desperate here.

had exactly the same issue you had the second time, posted, found no fix.
Using a spare sd card I had in it's place, my phone registered it as blank again the next day! It was a reboot job though and it has been fine since..
Would like to get to the bottom of this before a blow a decent sized card
I have had many many bizzare and quite frankly random SD card errors with this phone. Nearly one everyday doing something. Most of them read the same SD card missing, needs formatting, is empty or corrupted notifications. The latest one occurred 5 mins back on reinstalling NewsRoom app -- suddenly left with a totally empty SD card when trying to save RSS to it. As in every case, an immediate reboot fixed the error so I can't offer any more help.
Whenever I've had the "needs formatting" error I removed the card for a few mins before replacing it back inand it worked fine thereafter.

I've just tried leaving the card out for a few minutes with the phone off and reinserting to no avail. Tried restarting lots of times
Going to try another SD card now. Most people on other forums had problems with their stock 4gb cards whereas mine is an 8GB card i got separately. I think it's the phone at fault not the cards.
**Update** The other SD card is working fine so far. But i'm now left with a screwed up 8gb card that's not recognised by any pc. Any suggestions of how to fix this?
If my 4gb card is screwed up by the phone too i'll let you all know

Hi all,
Anyone else experienced this error, it is from the auto backup system which is standard. it says Error backing up data. An Error occured while saving your data to your SD card. The backup cannot be completed.
I have plenty of free space on the SD card and have had no problems for 2 months, then it started last week, so i decided to Root the device and see if by wiping the device that would fix it - but it has been rooted for a couple of hours and it has just come up with the same error again :-(
Any ideas?
Thanks.
You're having the SD card issue where it seems like it's mounted but it's not. Try viewing a picture or playing a song from your SD...chances are it's malfunctioned.
I had this issue all the time until I got another card.
Thanks for the quick reply - I just tried both and they worked fine. Can view pictures and play music stored on the SD card without issues.
The SD card is an 8Gb SanDisk SDHC one I have had for a couple of years, cam with the Touch HD I have from Orange I believe. Which has never caused me a problem before??!!!
I meant more the next time you get the error. My card would be fine for hours then die on me and I wouldn't really know until either that error showed or I tried to play music/podcast. If you get the error and your card is working fine then there's another issue and you should contact HTC.
So I have searched for this error and no one seems to have an answer that fits my problem. I got an error after booting that stated SD card unexpectedly removed and gave me a triangle with an exclamation point in the center
the card works fine
it will mount up perfectly from recovery, i even pushed several roms to it and tried (cyanogen, RR, and SkyRaider) all three worked beautifully, but as soon as I boot up BAM "SD card unexpectedly removed" and I can't access anything
the computer reads it just fine so I am pretty sure there is nothing wrong with the card, also with it reading in recovery it seems there is nothing wrong with the phone
is this a problem with ROMs?
I could try to do a factory reset and see if that works... but its really annoying :\
any help?
I would try reformatting the card on your PC. The card may have a bad sector that the PC and Recovery ignore. The phone OS tends to be a little more picky about those sort of things.

This worked
Thank you, I am running good now
I noticed when I was trying to backup my SD card (pictures and whatnot) that some of the files were corrupt
I will make sure I keep a regular backup just in case its a sign of the card going bad
good thing is my titanium backups were all perfect

You are on the right path - don't forget, a good practice is to back up your SD card to your PC regularly.
Why? If (when really) the SD goes wonky, you have a PC backup of the card, and you can get another SD, format it on the PC, load the backups you made, and be back in business in short order.

My solution was to format and start over, that was the only thing that worked for me
I've gotten this a few times and it is a PITA because it resets all the notification sounds and also the phone reboots. Once it does it, the only way I can get it to work is to remove the card, put it in the PC, let Win7 do a fix and repair errors and then it will work. I tried removing and reinserting, and it would mount the card and immediately give me the 'sd card unexpectedly removed' message.
I tried reformatting, and the sd card worked for a while and then I got the 'unexpectedly removed" message again after a few days. The last time it gave me that message, I just did the repair errors thing again and it's been working without fail for about 4 days now. It seems like it's going to be an ongoing thing though.
I've been googling like a mad person trying to find a real fix for this. I saw a thread on Android central where they guy said he put his wife's card in his phone and it did the same thing; but worked fine in hers. He mentioned it might be related to the 2.2 OTA update. My problem did start after that update.
In another forum thread, someone posted that they bought a new card, and it gave them the same message. So it doesn't appear to be a bad card; which is what I originally thought. I'd hate to buy a new one and have same issue (i have a 16gb card currently).
(sorry for long post)
I have the same problem! I'm using a Verizon HTC Droid Incredible 2. Previously i've been running Froyo 2.2 over the phone with a 16 GB microSD Card without problem. Later i've been using a 2 GB microSD Card and works fine, but now i'm runnin' Gingerbread ROM From verizon with 16 GB microSD Card and the messages "SD Card unexpectedly removed" don't stop.... the card works fine over other phones... even the stereo of my car can read perfectly the card's content.
I don't know if this is a problem with the update or what????
I don't think in the versions of "Bad sectors" because i check everthing and the problem persist.
The problem appears when i'm playing music... later of that the problem appears at the camera, the file explorer or another app that tries to read the SD Card.
I reboot the phone and works fine but after a couple of minutes the same [email protected]$%&t appears again....
I'm tired of reading forums telling me that is a problem with the sectors... that is a LIE!
no matters the class of the card because i've tried with Class 2, Class 4 and works fine.
This night i'll go to the store that solds me that coursed card to change it!
if tomorrow my problem was solved i been writing at this same forum!

I do not think someone saying it is bad sectors means they are lying.
I think they are merely trying to help you determine what the problem could possibly be.

did you format the card and try again as suggested earlier? That usually clears up any issues with sd cards unless they're fubar'd. Just make sure you back your card up first.
Whenever my card does this I put it into my Windows computer, right click on the card and go to properties/tools/error checking/ and check both boxes and let it run. It fixes my issues every time without formatting the card.
I had that problem a while back with one of Verizon's updates after 2.2. Reformatted card. worked fine in other phones but still said same thing everytine I put it back in the dinc. Ended up getting a new SD card then all was fine.

If you have an ext extension on your sd use G-Parted (google it) to format your ext2/3/4 partition.
Hey guys,
a few month ago, i created 2 threads here.
My sd-card simply stopped working and I couldnt find the issue, even replacing the slot did not help.
Today, suddenly, my bootloader recognized the card with a PC10IMG, just tried this one out.
I could upgrade, got to the newest radio, and android 2.3 (Virtous Sense 2) could use the sdcard.
But at first, wlan did not work, so i restarted the phone.
Now everything seems fine, except that after a few seconds, the SD-Card is "unexpectedly removed". or "damaged". I cannot format the card using the phone, even in recovery menu its unmountable after a few seconds. Example: I chose "install zip from sdcard", could find the rom on it, but when it started installing, the installation immediately aborted and after this, the sdcard wont answer anymore in any way. This is reproducable by simply formating the card again using the computer.
Any ideas how to fix this?
Thx in advance..

Its possible the connections for the sd card slot are damaged or that you got a damaged replacement, or that you might have damaged it on installation. I'm leaning towards the connection on the main board being damaged in some way. it's strange that it is intermittent.

I dont think its a problem with our memory cards. Either the card slot that Samsung made is of very poor quality or it is a problem with the latest ICS firmware. There A LOT of people facing this problem out there including my cousin who is the only other person i know with an S3. Not only does his memory card slot disconnect and reconnect, it completely killed it, it does work anymore. In some situations online, i have seen that people have ruined 2-3 memory cards by putting it in the S3.
I am facing the same problem and it is getting on my nerves. I live in a third world country so I might not receive a new phone.
Please find a solution XDA FORUM! :crying:
Had the same issue with my S3.
Turned out that the SD card was dying (the card brand is Team Group), this caused it to be unmounted by itself and then mounted again (sometimes showing notification “sd card removed unexpectedly”), hence triggering the “Media” scanning process and significantly draining the battery.
I created an application to monitor how many times the SD card was removed, and turned out to be unmounted every ~3 mins!!!
I then bought a new Transcend 32GB Class 10 card (made in Korea), and until now, this never happens, no reports from the application whatsoever, and no media process eating my battery.
I just published this app in the play store now, this is the link:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.sdcardmonitor
This may be the wrong place to ask this, and if it is, I apologize.
I also apologize for this being so long, but I wanted to include as much info as possible in case someone has a solution I haven't tried yet.
I have a Sandisk 32gb micro SD in my S3 (AT&T, rooted, running StockMOD 4.4 RC 2). The card worked perfectly fine before all of this started.
I ordered a new (generic) 64gb micro SD card through Amazon about a month ago. When I tried to copy my data to it, I got a 0x80070570 error, which seemed to point to a card defect. I sent it back, and finally got a replacement.
I unmounted the old card and put the replacement card in my S3. The new card didn't register in the phone at all.
I popped it out (the phone didn't recognize it, so I couldn't unmount it), put it in a USB card reader, and plugged it into my desktop (Windows 7 Home, 64 bit). The card said that it was formatted to FAT32. Since windows doesn't give you the ability to format to FAT32, I tried exFAT. I figured at the worst, when I put it in the phone, the phone would not recognize the file structure and give me the option to format it.
Well, a quick format didn't work (Windows said it was unable to complete it.) I tried a full format and when it got to the end, Windows said it couldn't complete that either. I put it back in my phone and it was recognized with a "blank card or unrecognized file system" error. It gave me the option to format it, so I did. After a maybe 2 seconds, the phone said it was checking the card for errors, then gave the "blank card" message again. I tried several times, but the same thing happened. I rebooted into recovery (CMW 6.0.4.7) and it seemed to show the card. I tried to format it there, but got the message "could not format /storage/sdcard1". I tried to mount it and got a "error mounting /storage/sdcard1" error.
I put the card back in the reader and my computer doesn't see anything there anymore. No drive letter. Nothing showing up in disk manager. I can't see it through diskpart's list volume or chkdsk (all run with admin privileges.) If I take the card out of the reader, the reader shows up as drive H (in all places). But once I put the card in, the drive disappears from everywhere.
So I figure I got another bum card. I put the old micro SD card back in my phone and it didn't see it. There's no message - the phone just doesn't recognize anything there. I rebooted, but still nothing. I booted into recovery and CMW doesn't see the old card, even though it worked perfectly fine up until this point. I tried wiping the cache and dalvik, but that didn't change anything. I booted without a card, inserted it, and the phone doesn't see it. I booted with the card in the phone, and it doesn't see it. I booted without a card, shut it down, inserted the cart, and rebooted, and that didn't work. The only thing I haven't tried yet is a factory rest. I put the old card in the reader and my computer doesn't see anything (just like the new one.) I tried disk manager, diskpart, chkdsk, etc. and it doesn't show up.
I tried 2 different card readers (1 USB, 1 internal) and neither reads either card. I tried 2 different micro SD to SD adapters, and neither one helps. I've tried reading the cards on 2 different computers, but neither sees either card. I found an old 2 gb micro SD card, plugged it into the USB adapter and it shows up in both computers fine. I tried both adapters and both work fine with the 2 gb. I also put the 2 gb in my phone, and it worked fine. So I think it's pretty safe to rule out an issue with the computer, the phone, the adapter, and the reader. Which leaves me with a card problem.
All of the solutions I've found online require that the computer actually assign a drive letter and see the card, even if it can't read it. I don't have that, so none of those work for me.
I get that the new card was probably a bum card. But why would my old card crap out all of a sudden? I had just taken a backup of what was on there, so it worked in the reader 30 minutes before I swapped out cards. I've inspected the contacts and they look fine to me. No scratches or crap on there.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get my 32 gb working again? Losing data isn't a problem, since I backed it up before I started this whole thing.
I've pretty much given up hope on the 64 gb at this point.
Really hard to say. But just a guess, maybe the card reader caused some sort of damage to the card. Would explain why both the new ones didn't work either.
Like I said though, it's purely a guess. But if windows doesn't recognize it no matter how you plug it in, I'm not sure there will be much you can do.
And just FYI, since this is a question, it should've been posted in Q&A.

Thanks, @DocHoliday77. I was afraid of that. Even though I don't see any damage it's possible something happened. I don't know.
I was just hoping that there was some kind of software that might be able to access the card without checking the file structure. Something that could format it without knowing, or caring, what was on it before.
And thanks for the heads up on where this should have been posted. Next time I'll ask my questions in Q&A.
Could be something internal that allowed too much power to the card maybe. No way of knowing that I'm aware of. There may be recovery software out there, but it may cost more than its worth or it may require special equipment. Been a long time since I've looked into that type stuff though.

Hey guys and girls!
This morning my phone turned off by itself (13% battery left) and needed somewhat longer than usual to reboot (in the meantime I plugged it back in to the charger). First thing I noticed was that my whole theme got reset as well as it started showing me introductional tips ("long press here to move your apps to the homescreen, ecc.). It also started to update apps in the Play Store even though I set it to manual ... so basically a LOT of things were reset.
The biggest problem I'm having now is though that all my files (pictures, videos, music) that are stored on an external micro SD card are corrupt. It's not possible anymore to open anything. I already removed the micro SD card and put it into an adapter to have a look at the files via the laptop. But nothing, even though the sizes of the files seem OK, I can't open them.
Does anyone have a clue as to what exactly happened here? Are those files lost (at least of some I have a backup) or is there anything I can do to "repair" them? Help is really appreciated, thanks!
PS: Things like the card unmounting and re-mounting never occurred. So I can't tell if the card was dying or if actually the phone ruined my files.
Did you happen to be using a SanDisk SD Card? I've had my 10 brick 2 of those until I switched to Samsung SD Cards about a year ago and haven't had issues since.
I never could manage to recover files from the damaged SD cards.
I have a Samsung SD card and had something similar.
I guess I was on Viper Rom and basically my phone restarted around 15-20% of battery. After a long wait for booting back again, all my settings were gone.
Files and others in the SD card was okay but basically until I formatted the card, I wasn't able to boot into the Download Mode to install a new rom...
I fixed the restart issue by installing the official HTC Rom.
Thanks for your replies.
It is indeed a SanDisk 16GB card. It seems though that the card is still working (no problems accessing it via phone or laptop), just the files appear to be broken. In the meantime I also tried apps like PC Inspector File Recovery, but to no success
I'm still on stock HTC Sense by the way, no root, nothing.
Anyone know though why that happened (resetting everything, etc.)?
Hit me with a PM I'll give you a SanDisk restore tool which works quite ok. there is a huge chance some files can be recovered, some will be damaged though. Don't push any new files on the card after you tried to restore the files
HTC 10-Corrupted microSD card
I know this is an older thread, but I was wondering if there is a solution. I have an HTC 10 which has an micro SD card in it, that is "married" to the phone. When connected to a computer, the computer recognizes the phone, and the microSD card, and begins to load the folders/files. Eventually this process stalls, and the phone/drive is no longer readable by the computer. To get the computer to recognize the phone/card again, I need to restart the phone, but the same thing happens again.
I have like 20gigs of data on the card, and cannot just put the card in a reader, because it's encrypted to the phone. Any possible solutions? It's frustrating to see the files/pictures for a minute or two, and then have them disappear. I have tried copying/pasting the files while they're visible, but this often triggers the computer to no longer recognize the phone/memory card. I've tried to un-encrypt the microSD card, but the phone can't recognize/access the microSD card long enough to complete that process.
Please help if you can.
