Reasons for rooting the Desire - Desire General

can somebody please give me some reasons to root?
rooting for the desire still looks like for much work...
is there already a good stock rom replacement?

Hi.
Rooting really looks like much work, but you do this only once, and then you're ready to flash as many times you like.
And my opinion is that new cooked ROMs pops on daily basis, so in near future i expect really cool stuff.
X.

Uhm i rooted it yesterday night... But the only reason i rooted it was to be able to install programm on SD.... But how may i do it?!

app2SD & Wifi Tether.. most important software after rooting for me..

Why to change the ROM?

Hello All,
I am using the O2 UK stock ROM for alreadz 2 monthes. now iam wondering if i should try to flash the device with one of the ROMs here.
can anyone tell me if i should do it or not, what is the advantage of flashing a new ROM?
thank you
Mostly to improve performance and stability, also to fix some problems.
All new roms comes with new AKU version, this is something like SP for Windows systems.
before you flash
always read the 1st post or 2 of the rom you are flashing.
all the info you should need is there
this way you won't be back and your next post won't be....
"help i have bricked my diamond"
good luck and have fun!
When you are happy with your phone now, don't flash it.
If you have issues, see if a new rom fixes it.
its all about the speed man!!!
and making it look unique
Flashing always has its small or big issues.
When you don't know what flashing is about anyway, why would he bother?
I first flashed a new ROM with ELFin and the speed was mind-blowing, not to mention the extra free space and RAM. For me, it's a must.
Just make sure enough people have downloaded and commented on its reliability and stability as well as the above (i.e. speed, RAM etc).

If you are happy running your stock O2 rom then just keep it that way & maybe just read up on customizing your phone.
Rom flashing on a £400 phone should only really be done if you know what your doing, so if you do decide to flash a custom rom to your phone then you better get busy reading up on the do's & especially the dont's otherwise you could end up with a £400 brick
read the wiki's
read the tuts/info/ posts on cid/ sim/ security stuff.
read read then read again is my advice, because it's amazing the amount of people that brick their phones just by pure ignorance.
For me it's a no brainer I like modding anything & everything nm just phones hehehe
Any's good luck on which ever you choose to do
It it works and you are happy with it don't flash. It really all depends if there is any thing in the new rom that you want.

@Dodolom - welcome
Best place to start reading about the rooting process is in the sticky at the top of this thread. Lots of information by many smart guys, so take your time and read through the lot before doing anything.
Why root? Well by rooting you can install custom ROMs which contain new software or customisations and programs outside of the stuff that HTC chooses to provide in their stock ROMs.
Good luck.
And just a word of advice - have a good read of all the stuff in the forum before asking questions. Will most certainly reduce the risk of you getting flamed
thanks mate.
Also, just run the phone as it is - you may find it does what you want it to do out the box - rooting is only neccessary if something you wish to do isn't available without rooting...

At the moment, I wouldn't say it's very advantageous to root your desire. I rooted my G1 back in the day (only a year or so ago I know ) - but with the Desire, the rooting process still leaves part of the OS locked down, which means you still don't get full control over it.
The only advantage I could see at the moment for rooting the desire would be to get Apps 2 SD. However this is rumoured to be a new feature in Android 2.2 (Froyo) which is due for release within the next month or 2 for Desires. So rather than void your warranty and risk bricking your phone. It might be better to wait for 2.2 and see what you get with that!
i have no idea why everyne doesnt root the desire when they get it... goto modaco.com goto the desire section and follow the r6 riskfree root process and now ou will have a world class phone that you can install app2sd , app2sd+ or app2sd++ nt to mention all the custom roms... good luck
What's the difference between app2sd, app2sd+ and app2sd++ ???

Root & Rom

Hello guys i have htc desire by telus. which is still stuck with 2.1 and very slow and laggy. and dont wana wait for telus 2.2 cuz it doesnt sounds promising.
so how easy is it to root and put rom leedroid on my desire? what are the chances to bricked the phone?
please share your taughts and help me and if u guys could provide link for easier root and put rom that be great. thanks
anyone? please help
please read the stickies in the adroid development forum
i did but there is soo many im new. so i dont know which to use. and i youtube the video its all in different language. so its confusing
The guides are made for new people. If you dont understand them I'd lay off rooting your desire as you could brick it
Hey buddy. I was in a similar situation as you, on the edge of rooting.
I also have a Telus-branded HTC Desire. The method I used was : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=763558 with this one:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=788044 for reference.
Its fairly painless. I have been hoping back and for between AuraSense, SenseHD, Miui, and Leedroid.
Found if you don't have a dire need for Camera, SenseHD is the way to go.
Otherwise, I've been enjoying the latest Leedroid.
If you are having problems following the guides, it may not be a good idea to root. However rooting the Desire is very easy (at least the GSM version).
I used unrEVOked to root, just download from their site, switch USB Debugging mode on, plug in and start the app ... it takes care of the rest.
I have used DeVillain, LeeDroid, and OpenDesire. LeeDroid is very good. I have personally stuck with Cyanogenmod. Very easy to install and the fastest benchmarks of the lot. Only problem .. no Sense .. but LauncherProPlus can do most of the sense stuff.
Happy hacking.

[Q] Some questions regarding DHD/ rooting?

Hello everyone! I own a desire hd and it's stock (soft. ver. 1.72.405.3), I must say I am ok with it that way but still I'm thinking of rooting it..
but I don't know much about that.. though I like it stock I understand there are some things it can do more...
first of all: what do I lose by rooting? the htc sense? the htc themes/ interface? the dolby surround and srs software?? see, I don't really want to return to the basic android and I like the custom htc interface..do I lose it??
second I heard about the official upgrade to 2.3 so I would be better to wait for that first?
by rooting I am mainly looking for overclocking..god, that's so cool!
so if someone can answer me the questions above, it would be great! also, if I decide to root which is the best way to do that, what programs do you recommend, is there a desire hd based ROM, and what should I do for overclocking?
thanks a lot!
First of all, your current software version cannot be rooted, you need to downgrade to an earlier version to root. You can root without installing custom roms, but most of the custom roms come with sence and all the htc additions

Hi,
and welcome to XDA.
The software version of your Desire HD (DHD for short) is not possible to root. In order to overclock you will need to downgrade to an earlier version (1.32).
Once downgraded rooting becomes easy. The process of rooting will not break anything, including the stuff you've mentioned. However, there is an additional layer of protection that HTC employ to prevent you from bricking you DHD. This beast is known as S-ON (Security On). In order to make persistent changes to your DHD, such as custom HTC Sense ROM's you will need to disable this, achieving S-OFF. This will break Over The Air (OTA) Updates from HTC or your network/carrier.
Again this is pretty straight forward.
If you wish to flash a new Radio you will need to have ENG S-OFF & Radio S-OFF.
The guides posted below are not created by me, they are very good and information in them will overlap slightly.
To downgrade, read this guide carefully --> Downgrading to 1.32 - Guide By jkoljo
To root & apply ENG S-OFF, read this guide carefully --> Rooting & Applying ENG S-OFF - Guide By jkoljo
To apply Radio S-OFF, read this guide carefully --> Applying Radio S-OFF - Guide By jkoljo
Once you have done all the basics we can talk you through the rest.
Let us know how you get on.
hey! thank you both
so I want to know, beside this protection that has to be disabled, the phone will act normal, right? no performance loss?
and also, if i block the update, i won't be able to update to gingerbread?
are you satisfied with the phone rooted compared to the stock?
and i'm planning to move to UK, will I be able to use it in other carrier such as o2 since I've got mine from orange RO?
Thank you
Tib!
You are correct, your DHD will not behave any differently than if the protections were enabled.
The Official Gingerbread update from HTC is still quite a while away, and all of the custom ROM Dev's will include any changes into their ROM's. So don't feel like you will miss out if you root & apply S-OFF.
Yes, I am very happy with it rooted. I can over/under clock my CPU when the situation demands, block in-app ads system wide, perform full backups of my entire DHD. These are merely scratching the surface of what root access can enable.
As for you moving to the UK, once you perform Radio S-OFF using the guide and tool described above, your DHD will not be SIM Locked to a particular network/carrier.
sounds great then.. but: it will erase all the data on the phone, right? i will lose everything
secondly, I am concerned about the rest of the process.. i will root it but after that? I'm sure all the cool stuff isn't free but i don't have access to payed apps on market, just for free ones (this is what is available for Romania at the time..) so i'm afraid i will get stuck..
thanks
Downgrading will erase all data on your DHD.
Some, not all the cool stuff are paid app's.
For instance SetCPU, the app nearly everyone uses to overclock their handsets is a paid app. But for XDA members its free. You can find it here on XDA-Devs, its all above board and legit. Other apps such as Titanium Backup have a paid app version on the Market, but also allow you buy a donate key from within the app.
I wouldn't worry about getting stuck, there are hundreds of users here all willing to help if you do.
EDIT: You can find SetCPU --> HERE, obviously if you like it and can afford to, donate to the author.
my friend, I understand there is a lot of work so I don't expect anything for free... of course I will donate (the app to download is at the end of the first thread, right?) but until now, the only access I had was to the free apps on market.
now.. I want to risk and root my phone.. (for me is an important decision) ) can I do this myself?
first I will follow the three steps you told me above and then I will look for help)
thanks

You can do it yourself and it's perfectly safe provided you take the time to read the guides and follow the instructions carefully.

ok, but please make clear: by rooting will i have a real froyo or future gingerbread or just sort of system that only acts like one of the two above?

by rooting it allows you to change the stock ROM (HTC sense) on your phone to another custom ROM either based on Froyo or Gingerbread
hi everyone,
i've just bought a DHD a month ago and my software version is 1.32.707.5
I have read quite a lot of thread regarding rooting the DHD but somehow i'm afraid that i brick my DHD if i try to root it because it seems that it is not as easy as running android on my HD2. My question is, is there anything i need to check before i start rooting?
Cheers
) well i'm afraid too..
well, have you done rooting your dhd?

And It's hard to Brick the Desire HD... And for your Gingerbread Concern, The Chef's here are aware of that.. Just be patience and they will Produce ROMS with Gingerbread on it.... Enjoy Rooting....

hi , ive been reading the guides and am really keen to root my dhd, was just about to start the process when i read that it wouldn't work with my branded dhd (vodaphone, australia) is this true? was hoping to go from 1.32.178.5 to 1.72.405.3 R2 is this possible using the stock to leedroid guide?
anyone, please tell me the difference with branded and unbranded DHD? and how to check them out?

as far as I know, the branded ones show the logo of the company (ex Vodafone, T-mobile.. etc)
The whole thing is really confusing to me. I do have ENG S-OFF, and already flashed a Radio and some Roms. Is ENG S-OFF better than Radio S-OFF? Or what is the difference to it?
I read some threads about it and now I am really confused..
Kick me!

How to update android ?

Hello guys, im newbie in roms and all the phones stuff so please dont criticise I have a HTC Desire Z with Android 2.2. My question here is how to update it to newer? 4.4.4 would be awesome, i want newest i can. I found some posts on couple of forums about this but every was like "format, flash, update, boooom done". Can anyone tell me how to do it from begining? I mean how to format it the way it should be, how to flash, what do i need etc.
Also i found this rom: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1374927
Is it good? I know i shouldnt ask what rom should i pick, im just asking is it good to use on this phone.
Thanks in advance
Hi,
The second post in this thread will help you understand the initial process
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2348266
You need to use gfree to exploit and root if you want radio s-off which is the only way you should root this phone. And be sure to read through all those links to understand fully first, I know it may be overwhelming but it is important.
As for best ROM, we don't make suggestions in xda but the third and forth post will link you to every to available. Gingerbread runs the best overall but there are many ICS and jb ROMs that work almost as well (some will say better) and KitKat has come a long way where many will find that it suffice for daily use.
You'll have to try a few, make backups, try a few more to see what works best for you
If you get stuck somewhere just ask in that thread and many are there to jump in and help
Best of luck!
Kay so i downgraded my phone with fre3vo and rebooted, everything was fine. Now the guide says i should head back to official rooting guide on wiki but the problem is i cant root it now. At downgrading it worked with no problems but now i just cant do it. Can anyone help please?
You will have to be more specific
Okay i did it and it works now i just misunderstood few things there
