...any luck? any radio updates for this?
I am a US TMobile subscriber, and here's what I know:
TMobile has only released 3G in a handful of cities, including NY, Vegas, and Houston (or maybe it was Austin).
Tmobile US runs on UMTS 1700/2100.
The Euro version of the Diamond runs on UMTS 900/2100. However, this 2100 band is supposedly "different" and will not run on TMobile US.
And the US version of the Diamond runs on UMTS 850/1900, which is what AT&T uses, and that won't work on the TMobile 3G network.
Long story short: no you won't get 3G with TMobile.
I have gotten 3g to work on tmobile but not in nyc. It was actually in central nj by philly. I took a few screenshots but not uploaded them yet. i got radio 1.25.05.
Great, could you please post the screenshots as well as your ROM version?
Dimond supposedly supports 1700 so not all is lost I think.

do you have an european diamond??
I'm sure if it's true, we'll get more confirmations to back him up.

Might road-trip to vegas to find out.

tu tienes el DIAM110 para USA?
I just got my "US version" and it's WCDMA 850/1900...
And I can see "G" icon coming up in "some" place.
But most of time, I only can get "E"....
I am sure my city already got T-mobile 3G service,
Because my friend who got a T-Mobile NOKIA 5610 ( 850/2100 ? )
His phone can always get a "G" coming up, and we tested the up/down speed
it's 153 / 42 kbps something.
I really want to know how to make mine working.
G is actually bad, it means GPRS not even EDGE (E) and the speed you posted is way to low for the 3G which should be a few MBPS actually.

Victor, the "G" is GPRS, not 3G. "E" is EDGE, which is a bit faster than GPRS.

I got G... but when I went to the info on top it didn't say GPRS... it said T-Mobile 3G...
I have a htc diamond 3700 DIA100.
Same as above post, I get G sporadic around philly, but it says 3G not GPRS in the info.
I think that's just the name of the data network. Your actual data connection would have a 3G icon if it were 3G.
my diamond is from hong kong.
i have t-mobile and live in new york city.
when i look at the top of the screen i see the [E] icon, and next to that, the signal bars with an E above them.

I don't think the WCDMA work on 3G networks. Different technology. I also don't think the regular US GSM phone will work on the tmobile network. Different wireless bands from AT&T...
I don't think any of the Diamond (US/Euro version) will work with US T-Mobile 3G, only PDA phone that I am aware of is the SonyEricsson X1 with 1700/2100 band.

WCDMA is the air interface used by UMTS & HSDPA so it is what we need/use for 3G on AT&T (and T-Mobile - just on a different frequency.)
On all WM phones I've owned I've never seen the choise of choosing UMTS or HSDPA in phone settings. You always get either AUTO, GSM (straight GSM or EDGE) or WCDMA (UMTS or HSDPA). And, when choosing WCDMA I will get HSDPA (as long as I'm in an area with it, of course.)
Is anyone using the A8181 on USA EDGE network. Would it be possible to post your download and upload speeds? I have one coming in the mail and I haven't decided what to do with it.
I am thinking of selling it to get a Nexus One, which I sold to get a Slide.
is 900kbs/sec out of the question for edge? 1mb?
Yes, 900 kb/sec is out of the question for edge.
EDGE (Enhanced Data rates for GSM Evolution) or EGPRS provides data transfer rates significantly faster than GPRS or HSCSD. EDGE increases the speed of each timeslot to 48 kbps and allows the use of up to 8 timeslots, giving a maximum data transfer rate of 384 kbps.

Remember, that is max possible speed. The real-life speed is much lower.
Thank you. I don't think I can live with 328 max. My slide is getting 3000+, on the new updates. That is in the peak in city though, in my neighborhood I average 1200 or so. Looks like I will never get to know the Desire.
You didn't understand what I quoted. That is the max speed of EDGE technology, it has nothing to do with Desire, Slide, or whatever. That is the technology capacity.
Are you sure Slide is on EDGE and not on 3G or HSDPA?
My mistake, I understood. I forgot to tell you my service provider, sorry. I have a USA t-mobile and I pay for 3G service.
If I use the A8181 in the USA it will only get EDGE, SO FOR ME**key words** it will not go faster than the EDGE technology will allow it.
On my slide I am able to pick up USA 3g and hsdpa+ as you can tell from the speeds I listed
My low end speeds are around 700 and that would have been enough hypothetically. But I am an idiot, because I should just disable my 3G and run an edge test from my own neighborhood.
Thank you again though, you gave me EXACTLY the answer i was looking for, and quickly.

I have a A8183 that I bought in London and use it here in the US on AT&T...no 3G only EDGE.
3G bands on this phone are limited to 900/2100, AT&T uses 850 and 1900.
A8183 is the Aussie model, not the Euro model, which is A8181.
A8183 = 850/1900mhz 3G
A8181 = 900/2100mhz 3G
Actually if you look online the A8183 uses 850/2100 bands for the Data.

Oops, you are correct.
A8183 on US 3G
Is AT&T the only US 3G network that the A8183 will work on ?
I ask because I am trying to find a phone (ideally a Desire) that will work on UK 3G and US 3G.
The A8183 does 850/2100 which I believe will let me do this ?
thanks
Alternatively, you could get a Nexus One as this will work on TMo in the US, and on UK networks.
Regards,
Dave
Anyone,
I have flashed a few roms and radios, and I love my phone.
Currently on latest Radio and LeeDroid 2.0a
My question is how can I tell if I am on the 850mhz NextG network or the standard 2100mhz 3G one?
I cant find anything in the phone that gives me this info.
Thanks
Daniel

You'll know when the 3G indicator in the status bar shows a H... meaning HSDPA.
What is the model number of your phone?
The only handset thats compatible with Telstra's Next G band is the A8183.
EDIT:
The ROM that I run on my Desire is this one:
http://www.t-mod.org/
It's a mod based on LeeDroid, but edited with necessary Telstra settings (apn, user agent, bookmarks, etc) -- but without the bloat
Yes I know the H icon, and yes I have a NextG phone. But nextg phones can still connect on 2100 band, which Telstra supports. And it is still HSDPA. I want to know if its connecting to 3g via 850 or 2100

Sorry you're right... Telstra handsets can still use the 2100 band.
From what I've been reading, you're network operator will change to "3Telstra" while using 2100.

I understand that the Telstra SIM cards have a preference for 850, then if unavailable 2100 then GSM, but other than looking at the operator id there's no easy way to tell which 3g band you are using.
With WinMo there used to be some stuff like HTC Field Test which was an app that provided engineering data about your device where you could see the carrier id (Telstra has a different carrier id to 3Telstra), but I'm not sure whether there is an Android equivalent.

I have looked in the menus at
Dialer : *#*#4636#*#* but nothing there
Telstra's 2100 network identifies itself as "3TELSTRA" (because it is half owned by 3) and Telstra's 850 network identifies itself as "Telstra Mobile" (or some such).
You can probably see this info in the lock screen and/or by pulling down the location bar. At least that's where I see it, but I'm using a cyanogenmod ROM. You can try forcing your phone onto one or the other under the wireless settings too.
Another way to tell is the MCC+MNC value, which you can view in the app "Network Info II". NextG (850) is 50501, 3Telstra (2100) is 50506.

Hi,
I have a HTC Desire that I bought in France with Orange. The phone is now unlocked and rooted, with a LeeDroid 1.8 rom.
I'm currently in Australia with a Telstra sim card and it seems I can't use the Next G. I have the HSDPA in few cities like Sydney, but everywhere else it's only Edge.
Does someone know if my phone is able to access the Next G ? And if yes, how to do it ?
Thanks a lot !
Antoine
Looks like you bought a Desire without 850MHz. Out of luck I'm afraid. The "Next G" you are seeing is 2100MHz which your phone supports but in rural areas Telstra uses 850MHz.

Is your Desire a A8181 or a A8183? The 83 denotes Telstra NextG 850mhz support.
If you have an 81, you will get 3G signal on every carrier except Telstra. If you have the 83, you only get 3G (NextG or 3.5G) on Telstra.
Yeah I have an A8181 so it explains why it doesn't works.
Thanks for your help guys !

Well, same problem for me !
I have a 81 and had chosen Telstra for the nextg and the cover...
The 850mhz support is software or hardware ?
Is it possible to do something on my desire to be able to use the NextG network ?
Cheers,
Quentin
No.

Your best bet is to use one of the other carriers in AUS such as Optus, Vodafone or 3.
The 850 Mhz radio is hardware based, and your phone has 900 Mhz radio.
3 doesn't support 900, I think Voda are deploying 850(but don't know how far their UMTS currently extends on 900) so the only long term alternative to a new handset would be Optus.
Hi,
Does the HOX support HSPA+ it only shows th H and not H+
I cant get HSPA+ on my HOX,
I'm on Tmobile UK and when i use the sim in my GS2Ii get hspa+ with superfast internet.
Why is this the case?

HSPA/WCDMA:
Europe/Asia: 850/900/1900//2100 MHz
GSM/GPRS/EDGE:
850/900/1800/1900 MHz
TLR - No HSPA+
Speed is slower and theres no sign
Speed is slow and theres no sign either
HSPA+ is a bit confusing, because as a standard I think the differences get confused. The Atrix is not truly conformant to HSPA+ but was sold as an HSPA+ phone. HSPA+ has been used as a marketing aid to say " we can now go even faster". Some phones do not display an H+ but still achieve those speeds
The HTC One X (quad-core verison) is rated to
HSDPA 21Mbps and HSUPA 5.76 Mbps
Since no network in the UK goes faster than that at present, that should be fine!
HSPA technically maxes out at 14.4Mbps. HSPA+ can max out at 56Mbps. So the HTC One X is somewhere in the middle!
Yes, it supports HSPA+ upto 21MBPS. Not the dual carrier 42MBPS one that T- Mo uses.

You're thinking of the USA T-Mobile. The UK one only supports up to 21Mbps but Three and T-Mobile UK will be rolling out their DC-HSPA+ network in september which supports up to 42Mbps speed.
The One X does support HSPA + 21.1Mbps, however, there is no H+ icon in sense, only the H icon. So you will never see a H+ icon even if you are on HSPA+. You should be seeing fast speeds when compared to other phones. Do a speed test on your One X and compare it to the S2. There should only be a tiny difference. Unless you're capped at 3.6Mbps by T-Mobile which most people are.
Also, check your APN settings.

Right, the dual carrier 42 is USA T Mo only. The global variant only supports upto 21, which isn't dual carrier. Which doesnt matter because we only have 21MBPS support anyways. And yes, it just doesnt show the H+ icon.
