android .amr audio format probs ... - Desire General

Just noticed (taken me 3 days) that my desire seems to record all audio in .amr format. This is fine on the device but as soon as it goes anywhere else there are problems.
The stock voice recorder does what i need quite well - but it records in amr format so although the "share" option makes it easy as pie to email someone a voice note, chances are they're not going to be able to open in at their end.
Same seems to be true for Evernote - I record a voice note but I can't listen to it on my PC. Opening a voice note through their web interface (firefox/win7 32) requires a plugin that cannot be found and installing their desktop software doesn't help either - it won't play any audio files.
Am I missing something fundamental here?
Know a good audio note app that records in MP3 or WAV with an easy "share" feature?
With evernote, how do you listen to audio notes on your PC?
Many Thanks, M

Loads on media players can play .amr, even if it is a slightly annoying format to be recording in. It is, however, the standard format for mobile phone recording since it's good at recording speech.
VLC will play it, so will Media Player Classic these are pretty standard audio players.
If you want to convert the files just shove 'amr to mp3' into google, there are loads of converters (some open source).
Probably the best bet is to use Audacity (free audio editor) and ffmpeg (codecs) to open and re-encode files. You can also edit the files to your liking (remove noise etc.)

Well that may be the view from the leading edge but NONE of the 12 people I sent audio notes to (before I realised they were recording as amr) were able to open them and they're certainly not going to download a 3rd party app to accommodate me.
And I certainly don't want to bugger about with transcoding on the desktop - I want to share straight from my mobile - but I can't find a single app that does something as simple as record to an MP3 file on Android. Any suggestions?
While there is a lot to love about this device / platform I am becoming increasingly aware of this sort of niggle as I scratch the surface.

Recordoid allows you to choose a few options like the format (between .3gp and. wav). I tend to use the app as a dictaphone. It has no sharing options though but I found it best for my purpose.

Thanks for the tip - will give it a go.
If I can get a wav or mp3 to a directory I can set up an Astro shortcut to it that will make sharing easy enough.

Well, I can only offer some notes from a different usage;
Recordoid records to /sdcard/dictaphone/ both through the widget and the app in .3GP and .WAV
HiFiCorder records to /sdcard/HiFiRecordings/ in .MP3 and .OGG (including very high quality)
Rehearsal Assistant records to /sdcard/urbanstew.RehearsalAssistant// in .3GP and .WAV
Virtual Recorder records to /sdcard/VirtualRecorder/ in .PCM
Voice Recorder (by Mamoru Tokashiki) records to /sdcard/com.tokasiki.android.voicerecorder/ in .3GP
Simple Note records to /sdcard/simplenote/ in .3GP
VoiceTask records to /sdcard/VoiceTask/ in .AMR
Voice Recorder [default] records to /sdcard/My Documents/My Recordings/ in .AMR
Most of them if not all feature options directly in the app to send through mail. Try them and see which suits you best. They are each positioned for slightly different uses.

VoiceTask - send your recording via mail in MP3 format
VoiceTask - application is a simple and handy voice recorder with possibility of sending recordings to any E-mail inbox in MP3 format. Application is designed for easy summarization of phone conversations and any other audio recordings.
The app is recording in the .amr format, but when you send the recording to mail, it is transocded into MP3.
Files are send to one email address (which you input on setup - no additional configurations needed).
And best of all... App is FREE!

Interesting, thanks - will take a look ..
Your app I presume?

I think it has potential - UI not too responsive (took me a few taps to start/stop recording).
Really needs some options on quality setting (as default is poor) and as some some else has commented I would prefer it to exit cleanly rather than running in background.

VoiceTask 1.1 (bugfixes, sending to multiple addresses) is out!!

Yes, I am developer of that app...
On my phone responsiveness is o.k.
Application doesn't exit cleanly like you said... This thing could be fixed..
I hope I'll have time to fix this until next release...

Thanks for the details, will test.

R there voice recording applications better than notes or onenote?

just curious. i want a better audio application that records things directly to mp3 format for example.
Audio notes
I use audionotes it it not free but is certainly the best i have used and I have tried many. Records with one button press to mp3, storage card or main memory. Also has ability to autorecord phone calls although this is not perfect. There is a trial download on their website.
resco audio recorder is very good!
r there free versions?

no MP3 ringtones sound

I downloaded some ringtones as mp3 or mp4 but no sound when selected as ringtones. It works if I select it to play in windows media player.
I have 3VO series rom on WM6.5.
check your settings, and make sure you have the ringer on loud and your system all the way up on the slide. hopefully this works.
i was using ringtones downloaded from myxer and they were in mp3d format and would never work. so now i just cut my own songs and make my own shortened mp3's and they work fine everytime.
check the file format on your computer and see what they are.
ignore what i said earlier it is invalid. my problem stemmed from the newest 3vo rom. dont know how to work it out.

Are the files you are trying to use high-quality, or better quality? If so, then try to use ones of lesser quality, since you don't need a HQ sound coming from your cell phone on RING...chances are that loading up that sound (if it is of a higher quality) takes up a decent amount of processing power/RAM, that at one point it just can't process the ring anymore.
I am using the 3vo 2.5 as well...if you want to send me the file, i can see if i figure out what the problem is...(you can email me it, just click my name and send me an email)

Some basic questions

Hi - I am new to Android and am struggling with some fairly basic concepts:
1. Unloading images, and video: I have Win7 and using the built in Windows image importer - it tries to unload all other images - not just camera. So I get lots of bookmark thumbnails etc; etc; I have also tried doubleTwist but that seemed overly complicated?
2. Sharing recorded video with others: The Desire seems to record to a format that no one can play. Well the video does but the sound does not. I have read that there is no way round this and you can only play it on your phone!!?? Surely thats not right? I just want to email friends some videos - surely thats not tricky!?
3. Multiple calendar reminders: When I get a reminder I get the option to Snooze All or Dismiss All - but I cant seem to dismiss just one reminder. Any ideas?
Thanks in advance for any help

1. The beauty of using a non-Apple smartphone is that you don't have to use a special application to manage your files. Just connect your device to your PC as a disk drive. Browse to it with your file explorer and just drag&drop.
2. Not sure what you mean here. Windows Media Player on Windows can play the videos recorded with the Desire. And Quicktime on OSX can as well.
3. Yeah, there's no way around this one. Bummer...
In terms of photos, why don't you just drag and drop...you don't really need to use an importing tool. That seems overly complicated for what you want.
On the video side of things, you have two formats to choose from. 3gp and Mp4. When you're shooting video there's a tab on the left. Pull it out and at the bottom is the settings. You can then choose "Encoding type" and switch. I believe you'll get the best compatibility with Mp4.
The reminders thing? I have no clue.
1. Issue with sync - OK I will drag and drop. The importer utility is normally quite handy as it only unloads images that havent already been unloaded etc; etc;

I have the choice out of H.263 and MPEG4. Both options output a .3gp file (I presumed that MPEG4 should output a .MP4). Both .3gp give the following message in VLC player "No suitable decoder module: VLC does not support the audio or video format "samr". Unfortunately there is no way for you to fix this." Media player doesnt give me a message it just doesnt give audio. Google this tells me that there is no easy way to solve this. So how come it works for you?
3. "...Yeah, there's no way around this one. Bummer..." Bummer indeed
Oh well - thanks for your answers guys but I would really love to try and sort this video issue. Incidentally its the same with sound recordings - they use the same samr codec which basically cant be used
Ah, well it seems both RealPlayer and Quicktime can play back the videos encoded with the mp4 or H.263 format.
EDIT - And also Windows Media player. I have read that VLC can't play them due to licensing issues for the AMR sound format.
download and install the k-lite codec pack it will include the classic player which is more than capable of playing these videos. I did have an issue with my vids i was recording when i was making a recording that lasted longer than 10 minutes, it was almost as if the card was too full record properly however the recorder still carried on going, this can be recognised when you press stop on the video recording and it goes straight back to the desktop instead of the camera. when this occurs nothing will play the file as it is corrupt. it must have been a third party program i had installed as when i defaulted the device the problem stopped and it would record as normal.

Record background music in video

Hi there,
How can I record the music I am listening to while recording video? I want to capture the moment with the music I listen to . It always stops the music playback when a video starts recording. I use the integrated camera app. Stock Android 8, rooted.
Thanks everyone.
Don't think you can, but use the video editor afterwards to add that same track, only takes a few seconds
That is not working as I need tune perfect recording of the exact moment the track is played. I cannot post that.
Which app do I need or which firmware allows that simple function? I remember my old phones being able to do that.

No firmware will allow it, you'll have to look for an app on the play store
Personally I would just edit the audio/video on PC
At least you could edit the mp3 in Audacity on PC to have it start at the perfect place, then use the video editor on Android to add that mp3
Spotify + Instagram?
You can install the "Sound Assistant" from the Galaxy Store and then enable the Dual-App-Sound (in your case, the "sound"-app). Then you can start recording with the camera, and the phone keeps playing the audio, but the Quality won't be the best, because it's recording the sound from the microphone and not internal.
Can confirm
Can confirm. Dual app sound in Sound Assistant and select your camera as the second app will allow you to play music while recording a video. I also suggest (if applicable) making sure that your setting for your volume control in your camera settings are set to system control and not take pic or start video.
Spotify + Instagram works perfectly!
