[Help request] How to package ROMs for XDAndroid. - Touch Pro2, Tilt 2 Android Development

I've asked this question in the android release thread, searched this forum and the internet at length to even get a starting point, but haven't found anything.
I wanna do some testing on my own and would like some direction (step by step instructions aren't necessary) on getting a ROM packaged over.
Any assistance is appreciated.

i know theres plenty of people n this forum that can help. they might be acting funny cuz of how u came off in the xdandroid thread. they mighta felt like u trying to pressure or criticize them or their wrk. PRIDE..lol OR it could juss be that no one knows here..................which i doubt...hopefully someone come in soon and point u in the direction u need. ive seen it around but after mad thread jumpin...if u ever see a moderator post...look at their signature..most usually cookin roms themselves and have the links right there in their sig. ive seen em and checked it out. it was too much for me at da moment..lol
chck out that official google android site where they tell u all free info to build apps, roms, etc.. plus u can even dwnload free developer kit in all that.. i was was damn...now i know where the AOSP came frm ;-) i know my next phone gotta have android as the os off tops wit all that free !([email protected] lol
Sent from my AOSP on XDANDROID MSM using the XDA mobile application powered by Tapatalk

What exactly are you trying to accomplish, when you say "getting a ROM packaged over"? Are you talking about modifying the userland (system.sqsh), or simply grabbing and redistributing the different components such as the kernel, system.sqsh image, initrd, etc.? Or, are you actually trying to create a flashable NBH? You aren't terribly specific with your goals, so unless you clarify I (nor any other members) know what you actually want to do.

Thanks DaveTheTytnIIGuy, I found what I was looking for in the Betterwang's thread.

loking for a fully packed rom

it is not my intention to wast space or irritate people i have searche and searched 1. just to let you know i cant get the ppckitchen cause i got kicked out because of a misunderstanding with one of there (gods) 2. some of the kitchens here are cool but dont support gps and rev-a. so my question is can some one help me with this problem, am willing to donate for a custom rom or can some one help me find a fully packed rom,i have sprint service the only one i have ever found that is fully packed was nexvision's hulk rom, does anyone know of a rom like that and is available, please help, oh yeah i have searched and if you have somthing to say about searching at least tell me where to look with details instead of just telling me to do more searchin please, tha\nk you for any help just to let anyone thinking i want a free ride without out doing any work, that is not my intention i am very willing to learn and to be patient in the process i would just appreciate anyone refering me to certain info to keep in mind that i dont always understand the language and that just because there is a definition to certain terms and meaning's i dont always get the meaning so anyone giving me info please have patience with me on alot how things are explained, thank you
Personally, I use a "Clean" ROM to help with storage space and other reasons. Some ROMs have things you may not want or need, and apps are always updated, so no sense in having two of the same thing. Plus it gives you more room for customization.

Nex's hulk rom is the only fully packed one that I know of. Since you've obviously found it, why are you looking for something else?

i would like to cook my own rom but i cant ever get anyone to give me details in lamens terms, im not slow its just that i see things in a physical form better than verbally or written and all i keep getting are links to the same info or when i give details on what i need help with they say that i dont tell them what i am looking for but some times they only read part of my thread or i dont know how to talk the language so i end up searching for custom roms, and i would start off with a clean one but it seems i can never remember the name of the apps or games that i want to put in them and the other thing is some people are able to pack in more stuff on there roms than others and they still run smooth and whe i add thing on a clean rom i can only get about a third or half of what they get in there roms before i run out of useable memory and to keep it running smooth
I tried cooking my own ROM, but in the end went to OMJ's ROM. I spent about 2 months trying to cook a ROM I liked and worked well. But, it is VERY time consuming, and you'll end up constantly flashing to fix something, add a tweak or 2, or add the newest package. Most of the "tutorials" for cooking can be vague, since there are far too many things involved, depending on what it is your planning to do. But, I would suggest finding one that fits you best and leaving it to the pro's. I'm not trying to say you can't do this, but the only real way to find your answers, is through simple trial & error.
well CHAMP can you lend me yer knowledge and lead me to a stable rom thats clean and maybe has touchflo and manilla2d and a good place to find the worlds biggest post for cab files so i can start my trial and error preferably with gps and rev-a,and i have heard of a mention somewhere about a manilla3d but havnt really been able to find any info on it maybe you could help even though i will continue to look myself, oh yeah a rom that still has a crap load of memory i think i saw one that had up to 160 or 170 of storage memory but cant remember where i saw it , thanks
my advice is to cook with vetvitos kitchen he has the some of the latest releases and has a simple kitchen to use that includes touchflo and manilla 2d and the thread is in this very section.

i did try his kitchen i kept on getting lots of errors in the part after you make the selections and it starts processing what i selected but i couldn't fix all of them so i left it alone
did you try nexvisions manilla rom. its packed and is very good. I know you had an issue with him in the irc chat but his roms are good and im sure it was just a misunderstanding. here is a link to his rom thread http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=31344

I was trying to help you. I don't know what the problem between you and Nex is, but if you don't state what happened, I sure can't help you there.
You don't need the kitchen to flash a ROM, so your reasoning is flawed. You did not state the link you found was dead...I naturally assumed you downloaded it and were now on a quest for similar feature packed roms.
Finally, like I said, there aren't any other ROMs like Nex's Hulk ROM. You can stop looking for something so packed - you won't find anything.

ok im back from my vacation and have been diong som searching, can someone teach me how to make a fully packed rom and i mean packed and that will be stable and dont expect it to be super fast but atleast not slow or slugish anyone out there up to help me
LOL.
He has no idea what he is talking about. Nex ROM are just a *.nbh file.
He is trying to flash it with nothing other than the nbh file. Obviously it didnt work. LOL
Until he learn how to read what people tells him he wont get it.

Honestly no one is going tot take the time to teach you how to make a ROM, you're gonna have to learn yourself through trial and error or else you need to try a ROM that someone else has made...There are plenty of these out there fully packed as well as clean with a clean ROM you can dl your own programs all you want and do the things that you would like to do to the ROM...Full ROM's are pretty packed and you can still add all the things that you would like...But ROM cooking will have o be something that you need to learn on your own by reading tutorials such as reading this :http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=25529
this thread will teach you how to customize a ROM that is already built add/remove all thanks goes to " rstoyguy "
So give it a shot.

i have know idea what you are talking about, because of course you cant flash a .nbh file by itself so yeah why would it work, and until i learn how to read what people tell me, well excuse me i didnt realize some people were born with this knowledge right out of the womb, i on the other hand am not so lucky so when im learning somthing new i have to ask people to have time and patience with me so that i can begin to understand and then learn to take some of these steps on my own, so if you have nothing positive to give i would appreciate it if you would let me continue my studies with someone who is willing to help

yeah i have seen that and am still learning, but i may have stated myself wrong, cause after searching and asking alot i realize that time is very precious and little, i am just looking for someone to help me with steps involved in some of these processes cause alot of the tutorials can be kind of vauge and its not just me even some of the more advanced people have found this to be true also, they will sometimes just sometime jump to certain parts without saying how to get there or mention crtain things with out being more detailed and when i try to search to find out i cant find it, so i end up asking questions that people say that are out there and to search but alot of the time cant get someone to poiunt me into the right dirction except to where tutorials are and then say ive been there and then some one who knows what they are doing will post somthing and my need for help gets lost in the thread, but thank you for at least replying with somthing positive instead of trying to make me look like a tard
I think what they are trying to say is you need to spend more time reading and learning. In the mean time I would try out OMJ's rom as it has m2d, is fairly packed and is very stable imo.. but there are many other VERY good roms out there I just happen to prefer OMJ's for what I use my ppc for.
It takes a long time to learn all this stuff, I joined here on 2/26/08 and I only have two posts.. I joined ppcgeeks about the same time and I have about 100 posts.. I wish I could contribute more and help out but my schedule doesnt allow me to get too involved unfortunately. Although in that time (almost a YEAR) Ive learned how to build a rom with the ppckitchen kitchen and a ton of other stuff that I never knew you could do with a ppc..lol
It says you just joined in september and im not bashing you in anyway but heck flash one of the roms that one of these skilled chefs made and enjoy your phone for now while you take the time to learn..
Re-read your post again and you will realiase why you are such an idiot and no wonder nex and others just ignore you. You are nothing but arrogant and stupid. People give you advise and you just run right by without reading and then complain why people dont help you at ppcgeeks because you give the same kind of attitude you just give me. People keep teaching you how to flash his rom but you just keep ignoring them and complaining why it cannot be flashed instead of just listening. Learn to be humble. Learn to read and follow instructions. 'nuff said

Rooting?

Could anyone point me to the correct tutorial to root your HTC Touch Pro 2 ?
I'v been reading up on the android builds past few days. I'm totally new to this.
I got android to work with the project android build. And i want to use Whatsapp.
But it won't let me open Whatsapp. 3rd party task manager is killing it. So i guess its ATK ? But i can't just uninstall it trough settings>applications etc. Same trough android market. I read somewhere you'd have to root it then. But i don't know how. Any help would be appreciated alot !!!.
If i'm not suppose to post this, because i haven't looked or w/e, fine delete this. But i did look. And if been reading alot of topics and iv seen alot of flaming just because of asking a question. might have been a stupid one, but still, people just want some help. Why not help out ? We all start somewhere. And im starting right here. haha.
Oh and if im totally off map by saying rooting, let me know how i can get whatsapp to work. Iv seen it works for others so im just waiting to fix mine. haha.
Anyway, great job on the forum and great builds for TP2.
Peace,
from the spacestronaut.
It is already rooted. Next time spend some time reading

well you didnt search enough nor read enough...and i started by reading and searching (only 2 posts in first year as member)
Like i said before, i did search the past few days, and i did read, but its not like theres a topic out there called "TP2 rooting". Or "how to get rid of preinstalled apps". So cool it. And help me out. That would be greatly appreciated it. i knew i shouldn't expect a mature response...

Well that's the problem, XDAndroid is rooted - but don't expect every app that works on native Android phones to work on these - this isn't exactly an approved or sanctioned port.

im not using the XDandroid build, im using the project android build. And i read somewhere in order for whatsapp to be working you need to get rid of ATK by rooting your phone and then get rid of the app (ATK). So, some are saying it should be rooted. And it's not like no one is running whatsapp on a HTC android mod. it should be working. but i can't seem to get rid of ATK. iv read other could just get rid of it trough settings>applications but i can only delete the updates. Please some real anwsers instead of saying things i allready know.
Hey,
first of all welcome to the xda-developers forum...
like u and i guess everyone i hate answers like some of the ones you got..
i think a froum is made to ask questiuons however that might be about...
and it took me month back in my old htc kaiser days to get the whole android thing.
so when you want to install apps that are not from the store then u have to check one checkbox first.
ull find it under settings->applications-> and there should be a checkbox that says unsigned apps or untrusted apps...something like that.
normally this page should pop up if u click on a app that u have on the sd card...
i hope that is what u asked for...
and the phone is already rooted whatever build u are using
and if u have any questions but dont want to ask them in the forum cuz u might think that u get answers that dont suit ure question just pm me

Hi, i appreciate your response. Thanks alot.
So it's allready rooted. Ok cool. Let me explain. I want to use Whatsapp. But when i open it, i get the 3rd party task manager is blocking it. And im guessing its the ATK. but i can't get rid of it. I know how to install unsigned and untrusted apps. But now i want to get rid of it. haha. Anyway, i shoot you a message maybe tomorrow to explain more i guess. A mod can close this, as i proberly won't get a straight answers anyway.

Your right, i don't know, that's why im asking... smh at the ignorance at this forum.
hey,
ok now i got what ure asking...
so then it is important what method u are using? do you have a system.ext2 file that you load with haret?
or do you have a partioned sd card with the android system on a ext2 partition.
when you have the whole system in a system.ext2 file you would need to unpack it, delete the .apk of the app, and then pack it into a .ext2 file again...
when you have the second method that just browse into the folder system/apps/ and delete the file...
that should work for every normal app but it is not easy to do it...

Well you certainly answered my questions with a confidence only stupidity can be responsible for.
FYI, there's a difference between ignorance & stupidity. Ignorant people just don't know. Stupid people know, but are willingly ignorant. You have all the information available to, yet you insist on being ignorant.
It's OK to ask questions - but if it has been answered before, answering the same questions over and over again gets old. So some of us will respond a little less amicably than others - 9 times out of 10, this was because the OP didn't do their due diligence.

I just sent you a pm. i don't load anything, i start winmo, open up, project android, hit boot, android starts... that's all i do. i don't have a system.ext2 file on my sd. if this method is "wrong" or dated, let me know where to get the newest build. seems like that is the problem ?
hm...so you have to have some files that are behind that...
and i would think that you have a system.ext2 file somewhere...
should be in the andboot folder on your sd card.
but in builds that are used now here that task manager you want to get rid of isnt used anymore...so i would suggest just try the xdandroid build and kernels or the neopeek version which is very fast and you have all files on a spare partition on your sd card.
if you want to get started with the neopeek build just check neopeek.com and then the forum. there are all the build he has developed and instructions how to install. if u have any questions about that just let me know...
i guess art your point it would be the easiest to switch to another build

Listen, i understand your point of view. Iv been reading up on alot of threads in the Touch Pro 2 section. And i saw alot of normal questions being asked. And there was alot of flaming just because of those questions. That's disrespect in my opinion. Because you guys now, just point a newb to the right place. I mean it's not that hard... or is it ? I guess if your whole issue is ATK, then just use a newer build. I don't think ATK has been included in any of the 2.2 builds, but it hasn't been in a build for a while. So I'm guessing your build is old if you still have ATK on there.

its a double-edged sword this kinda thing, because its easy for both sides it is just tedious and requires an abnormal amount of patience which some of us (like myself) have little of to begin with
also there are times, like this, that a noob cant simply be pointed in the right direction
all that said i agree with nick, just use xdandroid for tp2 especially since that is what the people around here are most accustomed to
So I am new with the Android world.
I got Blazn up and running, but that's all where I am at lol.
So i see all those extra information that I am not knowledgeable about (not ignorant so people don't start flaming) , so I am going to call myself a NOOB when it comes to Android and learning bit by bit everyday.
So long story short, You guys got WhatsApp up and running properly?
Because I heard back in the 2.1 eclair , WhatsApp was not working correctly.
If working, what alterations have you guys done to make it run (if any needed).

Ok, after a quick google search I see what it is... why not just use Google Voice? Seems like a much better alternative IMHO.

[Q] need helps

i want to know how do i do to build a kernel for my htc desire, and ov/uc please thx
Try the Q&A section, where this should've been posted. Maybe you shouldn't be cooking kernels when you can't even manage to read forumpolicies
lol everyone learns and i want to learn how to make it just it

There is a q&a section on this forum, try there. This thread will probably soon be locked down once mods found out about it and most importantly, you won't get any help here.
hello noob!

Someone needs to take that ****e video off YouTube as it's harsh. How are we meant to build a community if people just shoot n00bs down before they know anything??

I agree noob threads are great, they helped me immensely.. but the android development thread is there for a specific reason and so is the q&a thread

I've been noticing the increase of stupid questions for a while but more importantly, I am getting fed up with the aggressive nature of some of the users. So people post in the wrong section, move post with warning, end of.
Also if the ROMS were cross posted to FAQ by default then more people would end up there instead of using the search to find the ROM title and ending up at the DEV thread.
xda is getting a bad rep for their mods and i'm not surprised. . . .

Returning to the original question.
The prerequisites for rolling your own kernel are:
- A linux system
- Terminal Know-how
- A synched GIT (such as the Bravo CM7 branch)
- Patience
That is just for building the stock kernel.
The additional prerequisites for changing stuff:
- A text editor
- A set of OC/UV values (such as Eviolett's)
- Experience in the linux terminal - more than for just compiling the stock kernel.
It doesn't seem like a lot of work - Sync the GIT, chuck in a few values, and build it. In reality, however, there is a stack of other stuff to do. I have a fairly good knowledge of the linux terminal, but still spent a stack more time getting everything ready than I wanted to (hours, in fact).
As motivated as you may be, it ain't a walk in the park, even with a detailed set of instructions. Stuff is going to go wrong, and a lot of the time, problems differ from those prescribed in the instructions.
Having been there, done that (or more accurately, failed to do that), this is just my two cents.
EDIT: Just to clarify, I failed miserably.

Nice idea but look at Robo's "RCMix S v2.0 Evolutionary Sense" thread" it has a separate RCMix Guide/Tutorial/FAQ + 2 irc channels now have a look through the 12000 odd posts in that thread maybe 50% are total spam by people who don't understand how a forum works, fail to do any independent research but expect someone to hold their hand and explain everything slowly to them. I don't condone it but i fully understand the reaction a lot of "dumb" superfluous posts get
This. Simple fact is most people are incredibly lazy and thinking that devs are here to answer their every stupid question.

Must agree.. I spent probably 10+ hours researching before I flashed my first ROM..

I totally agree with fllash. It looks easy, but it certainly isn't.
Just start with downloading a copy of Ubuntu, version 10.04 and up will do just fine.
Why Ubuntu? Well, if you're only starting out with Linux and the more advanced topics such as compiling your own kernel, you'll need all the help you can get. XDA is a great community with a lot of information to be found, but it sure won't cover all the questions you'll have, so you might want to search trough the Ubuntu forums etc., as they might have more specific answers to your questions. There are also numerous books about starting with Linux, so you might want to check those out as well.
When you got a nice grip on working in Linux and the terminal, it's time to get busy programming!
If you're not a programmer already, you might want to start with Java. (Maybe write a little Android program? That way you'll also learn how Android works)
The Linux kernel is written in C and that might be a bit harsh to start out with. However, if you feel confident enough (or if you have programming skills already), go get yourself a book about programming in C, search some tutorials and start off writing some easy and silly programs, just to get a good grip on the language.
When you feel like you got a good grip on programming in C, feel free to download a kernel which is already compatible with the HTC Desire, one from CM or one from Thalamus (from Oxygen ROM) and take a look at the source code. Try to understand what makes it tick. Please note, that these kenels are for AOSP ROM's only! If you want a HTC Sense compatible kernel, go get the source from HTC which you can find here: http://developer.htc.com
By the time you got this far, it's only a piece of cake to compile and install. (Compiling and installing really isn't the hardest part about all this, so you'll manage to find your way out of this one)
Right now, you're probably thinking: "Is this all necessary? I just want my own kernel.." Well, yeah, it kinda is. You just can't follow a tutorial and end up with a kernel which is going to be great. There are going to be bugs, you're going to have problems, nothing will work from the first try.
Maintaining a kernel is hard work and requires a lot of knowledge in order to do a proper job.
Also, take a look at http://developer.android.com/. Knowing how Android works is kinda a requirement as well (at least, I consider it to be a requirement).
Oh, and for the record, please post in the correct forums next time. There's a Q&A section where you can search for, or ask questions. I understand that this is a dev-related question and you might have figured that the dev section would do fine, but unfortunately, it doesn't.
Okay? Well, happy learning! Don't let other forum members or some tough luck get you down.

Please don't kill me but ...

i know this don't sound professional and to be honest a litttle annoying but
i wanted to try this mod
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=32385441
the BB10 lockscreen but i don't understand it's instructions
How to :
1) Apply patch(diff) with resources.
2) Compile.
3) Done
...? huh ? i don't get it ...any help ?
I think the patch method is for more experienced users. I don't understand it either. It seems like it might not matter though. As long as you are running a ROM with the T Mobile theme engine, it's going to be available through the Play Store soon. Just a heads up, rather than starting a new thread, wait a couple of days to see if the requests for more information in the original thread turn anything up. Someone might well be writing up a how-to guide, but that kind of thing takes time to do right. We just need to be respectful of the fact that the people who are able to provide that kind of information are doing so as a hobby. Good work takes time, so let a little time pass.
Edit: Seems like there's already a how-to link posted.

The patch is for people that compile their own roms from source.
good day.
there's tutorials on both subjects.
i would think most don't have the determination to get there.

[Q] Adding phone functionality to "inactive phone rom"

Hey everyone, I have a couple of questions. First off as you can see from my post count I'm a lurker. I can remove/install ROMs, the basics, but never have I tried to add/remove apps or functions to one. So I've found a ROM I love, but it was designed with inactive phones in mind, to make them into second life usable music/video players. It has no phone functionality because of this. The one I'm interested in is by frickinjerms - Ubersonic - I hope I can modify others work for my personal use. Guess that should be a question too.
Would it be ok to add in phone functionality or would it be easier to find one with that already and just remove the fluff I don't want and add what I do?
As I understand it, I can just add it back in, but I'm unsure what files go back in. Is there a resource that outlines that anywhere, or can anyone throw me a bone?
Is it ok to modify the work of others for your personal use without asking, or should you seek approval first out of proper etiquette?
I've been searching through XDA and other sites looking for some basic beginners stuff for cooking up ROMs, but have only come across limited collections. I'm toying with dsixda's Android Kitchen right now, but would love to find other resources. So any pointers to learning resources would be great too.
Thanks!
For the last one, I personally believe that its not necessary to ask before modifying a rom thats for your personal use because only you will know about it anyway, and people do it all the time
You only need to ask for permission if you're reposting your personal version of someone elses rom

I figured that was likely the case I just wanted to clarify it for myself. I know people put in a lot of work on some of their ROMs and don't want to step on toes.
Thanks for the response.
You know you could use a rom that does have phone functionality. Just throwing that out there.

Whats the point of flavors if you're forced to pick the one you don't like? Just throwing that out there.
I don't think my questions were unreasonable either. I'm not asking for someone to build me something, I'm asking for the fishing pole, not the fish.
