Hi guys, just signed up to the forum after I bought the Desire yesterday. Spent weeks browsing these forums to help my decision, so many thanks!
Got a problem with adding a contact. Spent last night adding them in and I could get the option to fill First Name and Last Name fields, but I came to do it today to add some more and I don't get the First and Last Name fields....? I go to Menu > People > All > Add Contact > Name, but all I can do is type the name there, and as it has a cap on how many characters to use, some surnames arn't completed.
If anyone has some advice I'd be extremely grateful.
Cheers, Sean.
You can add contacts by typing the number first in your 'phone' application. A new option becomes available which states 'save to people' (depending on your language). Choose this option and then new contact. Then you can choose where to save it: phone, sim or google account. You can fill in all details > first and last name, email, numbers, birthday etc..
You can change the name in the top field, next to the camera icon.
Or you open the app 'people' in your apps list and choose to save the contacts either in sim, phone or google.

Hi new to forum and to the world of the smart phone ( so please be kind )
I picked up my new phone yesterday HTC Desire
so far so good but one thing annoys me that i cant fix
The phonebook is rubbish as it the first name of the person is not the first word in the phone book
as in :- John Smith Mobile is :- Mobile Smith John
is there any way to switch this round ??
Thanks
Funnily enough, I was just about to post some issues about the phone book and you beat me to it!
With regards to the swapping round of first/last names, I think your only option is to go in and manually change each entry. I've had this before and in GMail (I think) is makes a good guess what is first and last name. Sometimes when syncing between devices and the cloud, especially on the first time, the devices don't agree what is first and what is the last name.
Though I hope I'm wrong and you don't have to manually change everything.

I am not very good with phones (but I am learning )
I also hope we don't have to manually change as i have over 200 people on my phone book.
Believe me, I feel your pain. I'm decently versed in how syncing contacts can mess up as I've done it to varying degrees on past phones.
I've had all contacts duplicated and had to sit there for the evening deleting contacts. Over dinner, deleting contacts.
I've had to go in manually and correct contacts and change around details.
Probably the biggest piece of advice I can give you or anyone, is:
Before you do anything major, even syncing with a new device, backup (export) your online contacts!
And then:
When you've got your contacts nice and sweet synced between online/mobile device/whatever, backup your contacts!!!
You get a lot more leway for the future!
I had to spend about 40 minutes sorting out my contact list the other day.
Glad I took the time to actually go through and do it, as all my contacts are linked and organised properly, definitely worth doing.
I have just done the same now
how do you put a photo to the number?

Just replied in your thread, but will stick it here too:
People > Tap on the name > Edit > Tap on the camera icon in the top left.
thanks I'm getting there...
Will take a few days to get used to it
Does anyone else have a problem with the some of the contact names 'resetting'?
I originally copied over all contacts from my SIM, and have since linked most of them up to their Facebook profiles. I have set the display name to be the one listed on Facebook, and this works perfectly for the majority.
A couple of contacts keep going back to their name on the SIM, have no idea why...
When linked to my Exchange server. It's strange though, since my Htc Hero has no issues whatsoever with this. I can begin to type any name in the To: field and it start suggesting receivers. Now with the Desire, I get no name completion/suggestions whatsoever. It does however work in the recipient fields in for example the SMS application.
Anybody else experience this?
Running 2.1-update1 as is.
Thanks in advance.
Hi jivebunny,
Mine suggests names just fine (from history usage or from my contacts). What is does not do is to suggest names from the full corporate directory (this could take a lot of network/time if you have a big corporate directory). If you want to do that, click the little person icon next to the "to:" list and you can search your corporate directory.
John
Hi John,
Thanks for the reply, this is what I also found, yet how do you control these settings? I've synced my contacts onto the phone through activesync (or does it not work like that anymore?), yet it will suggest nothing when it comes to emails. If I indeed press the little contactperson I get corporate contacts as base, and clicking that again leads to device contacts. Is there a way to change the default setting for that?
I'd rather it not search through the corporate list, since it's big and slow indeed.
I searched and tried a lot of things, but no option found for this.
Thanks again!
Hi All,
I have just flashed this ROM http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1016940 and sycronized my phone with gmail. Unfortunatelly my names appeare the other way around in my Desire (first name last name).
I downloaded this: http://www.freewarelovers.com/android/app/namefixer and installed it with Astro. When I set everithyng up and hit "write names" is shuts down. I am searching the web for solutions for a while now, but found nothing.
I could fix this under the people menu as I can set how to sorte the names there, but I can not fix it under call.
Do you have any idea?
I have just checked that Desire see my contacts correctly last name is last name and first name is correct too. The question now is if I could soehow arrange the names for last name under the "call" menu too.
Thanks
On main screen(home screen) press phone then people then menu then settings and there you can change
Sent from my HTC Desire
Thanks
It is clear under "people". MY question would be if you can change it under "phone"
Thanks
I didn't realize there would be any continuing demand for my converter, so I brought it back. Hopefully someone will find it useful. Also, I will do better about checking back on potential problems. Unfortunately I lost the source for this project (I think, I will keep looking), so any changes will require a new project. Luckily, it is not complicated and can be accomplished rather easily if need be, but I would prefer to avoid it.
These are the supported fields:
FirstName
LastName
Email
mobile number
home1 number
business1 number
home2 number
business2 number
faxHome number
faxBusiness number
company number (not sure i got this field right, but whatever)
There was previously an issue with names without a last name, but it should be working correctly now.
Procedure is the same as before:
This will NOT work with an Office CSV file (maybe in the future, we will see).
Ok so here is how it works.
Log in to your "My Verizon" account on http://verizonwireless.com/
Click "Select All"
In the "Select Action" dropdown, select "Export Contacts"
Click "Go"
Select "CSV (Backup Assistant)" in the drop-down
Click "Export"
Save the csv file it sends you.
Go to my website http://www.craigslistcounter.net/KinContacts.aspx and select your file in the upload section, then click upload. Save the Cellebrite XML file it sends you back.
Now, use johnkussack's most excellent KINO application to upload the Cellebrite XML to the root of your phone (instructions for setup there).
Restart your phone.
From the phone app, hit ##77647266488 and press call.
Enter 000000 in the code box.
Go to the "Contacts" menu at the bottom, and click "Import Contacts"
All of your contacts should import. 270 took me a few seconds. If it is taking too long you probably didn't restart after uploading the file to your phone (tsk tsk), so just shut it down and turn it back on.

Guh, just did a refresh of my server and I think I left the sleep functionality on. I will change it tonight, it will be running by about 4:30.
Thanks for letting me know.
Hey all. I hate to ask, as this seems.. pretty absurd, but..
How do a add a contact to my phone book, WITHOUT having to specify "which google account to link it to"? Years ago (3?) on my Fascinate (Galaxy 1), I remember seeing a "Phone Only" option on that pop-up selector, but I don't now. (And haven't seen it for a long time..)
I'm on a CM variant ROM, if that matters, too.

When you add a contact on the top look closely and you will see a menu in that menu it gives the option to save to device or sim card or Google account. Yours menu likely says Google right now so press in the lower right side of that menu where you see things are being saved to google and it will give you other options like device or sim card. You will see a small shaded corner that's where you press to get the menu and options. I hope this helps. Its located directly on top when you press to add a contact. No question is a stupid question and hope this clears it up for you. So you have three choices to save to device sim or google.once you choose the option the contacts will be speed to that option. Best wishes.
