Don't have a desire yet, but I have a question. - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi
I am planning on getting an HTC Desire as soon as O2 get their finger out and release it.
But I have a question regarding the keyboards.
I do plan on trying Swype, however, I think I would only like to use Sywpe while the device is in Landscape mode. I would like to use the standard phone keypad (buttons 1-9) with T9 predictive text input?
Is this possible, or do you need to use the same in each orientation?
I gather there is a multi touch problem when changing keyboards, but it can be solved by a reboot?
Thanks
Stu

Pretty sure it's the same both ways - I don't use Swype as the Desire keyboard is good enough to be quick

It's the same in both ways but it's not like it's hard, or long to change the keyboard type.

Just my two cents: Had a HD2 which I felt it was necessary to install Swype on due to the keyboard being jumpy and prone to double-entry.
The desire's keyboard is ridiculously impressive. Haven't found myself wanting Swype as the correction and capacitive detection are fantastic.

Alternative keyboard - ROM incoporated only?

I'm no pro when it comes to these things but I have read a fair amount on here when it comes to these things, but I'm confused so hopefully someone can clarify..
I've got my new Compact 3 from T-mobile and I really can't stand the qwerty keyboard. It works fine with the stylus but it's just not any good for finger typing. I quite like the Touch version where the keys are quite a bit larger, so here's the question..
is it possible to get another input keyboard working on this device without the need for a replacement rom? I'm happy with the officla T-mobile WM6 version I upgraded to at the weekend.

This one is good and free at the moment.
what will happen with the standard keyboard? will I still have choice to use the small keys one?
is there a way to add the touch keyboard but with Russian layout/letters without changing the rom?
I use resco keyboard, it's commercial but I haven't found any other keyboard for that price/features. It supports Russian and about 20 other languages. It seems to be working a little slower than other keyboards but not that much.
Try this one:

It's a very good keyboard, with tons of features, for me the big keys are a must-have.

I second this one, once you practice and get used to it, works very well.

Recommend keyboard please

I'm looking for keyboard that makes it easier for me to type with no mistakes.
I've come to the Desire from the Dream, and it's taking me a while to adjust to virtual keyboard. The HTC Touch Input is ok, better than the standard Android, but still not as good/accurate as the iPhone.
Is it true that the Android keyboards cannot do proper multi-touch?
I'm currently downloading every keyboard I can find to try & find a better match for me, but would appreciate some suggestions.
I found smart keyboard pro to be the best do far. I also can from the g1 and using smart pro, I don't miss my old hard keyboard at all.
Smart keyboard also does predicted text in the search bar. Very good.

Leaked X1 R3 keyboard vs X2 keyboard

Just got a PM about the leaked R3 virtual keyboard from an XDA member, and I realized that many might not even know about its existance. So what virtual keyboard to you guys use? X2, "leaked R3", HTC, Fingerboard, or a third party keyboard?
In case you didn't know about the official Xperia offerings here are pics and links.
X1's leaked R3 keyboard... which has a T9 option unlike the X2 version I believe.

X2's keyboard

X2's keyboard also has other keyboard layouts. Hold "123" button (if i remember correctly) and you'll get their list.
But anyway I prefer using HTC's EzInput

Really? I'm surprised you prefer the HTC keyboard. My turn off to the HTC keyboard has been the inclusion of arrow buttons, that take up precious space on our X1s that already have both a hardware DPAD and an optical pad. the size issue made it difficult to use on my old HTC Pure/Diamond 2 with its 3.2" screen and its even more difficult for me to use on the X1's smaller 3.0" screen. I had to use a software keyboard as primary input for a brief period when my HW keyboard was acting up, and HTC's was a huuuuuge pain due to buttons being tiny due to the inclusion of an onscreen DPAD. I have Resco keyboard, but I may just experiment with the R3 and X2 keyboards.
I'm using HTC keyboard, probably because it's already included in my ROM and i'm too lazy to install another one.
If keyboard would not be installed, i would use default WM keyboard and use hardware kb for every small thing. And if i would have to install one, i would install X2 keyboard.
Sir how can I install that R3 Keyboard? Does it have Alpha numeric keys like on nokia? Iam having difficulties in typing in HTC form. I am using WM6.5xx...Please need help. thanks

Yes, it does have T9 input (alphanumeric keys). Just install this cab http://rapidshare.com/files/210068347/OEM_SE_XPeria_Keyboard.CAB on your phone, and that should be all.
can somebody please reupload this file? the files seems to be deleted by rapidshare
The keyboard of my choice is the Resco Keyboard. I consider it almost perfect. I hardly ever have to flip out the hardware keyboard.

New Keyboard

I heard the keyboard for WP7 is nice by default and ill find that out when i get my phone in a couple days but i was wondering if there will be any other keyboards for WP7 like Android has SWYPE. Do you think they will come with the upcoming updates , apps on the marketplace, or with the WP7 "Jailbreak"?
There are no other keyboards available at this time.
However, I can say that the WP7 keyboard is, in my opinion, the finest software keyboard on the market, hands down.
Swype and the HTC IME keyboards on android are good.. but they pale in comparison to this one in my experience.
Agree 100%.
The buttons are not bigger than Android..but I seem to be able to type more accurately on WP7. No idea why. Nice, nontheless.
I've bought my device (HTC HD7) in Germany and it doesn't have Cyrillic keyboard. It's not a problem for me to use English interface, device supports displaying Cyrillic fonts but I can't type text on two Cyrillic languages which I'm using the most.
Do not having the ability to add Cyrillic keyboard at the moment is THE MOST ANNOYING thing with the device. I simply can't use it for basic needs like writing SMS or e-mail to somebody on my native language. When buying the device I thought that It shouldn't be a problem adding a keyboard but now I am very disappointed. Need to use second device (old Nokia smartphone) each time when I should write something on Cyrillic on the way. Ironically, HD7 does not support sharing Internet connection to my secondary device, so I have to pay for two Internet-enabled plans which makes me completely unhappy.
Is any way to help me without selling the device back?
Hi guys, do you know how can I get Russian keyboard on my spanish WP7 LG e900?
thanks!

are wp7 devices sold in countries that use that language? If not, I'm not sure you will get any support from microsoft until they are.

From about three weeks of use so far, I'd say it's the second-best software keyboard I've ever used, after the iPhone keyboard. I can usually type faster than I could on the HTC keyboards on WM and Android. On the iPhone I could type without even looking down because the autocorrect works amazingly well for the most part-- not quite there yet on WP7 (despite a physically larger screen and thus keyboard), but almost.
For now, there's no way to replace the keyboard, though for standard use, you probably won't need a replacement one. Makes sense for non-Latin characters, but WP7 basically lacks Unicode support (very few character sets built in), so it can't do much for non-Latin scripts anyway.
I find WP7 to have the second best keyboard ever, too. But, I disagree in that I find it more accurate than the iPhone keyboard (or at least better at autocorrection). I find the autocorrect makes fewer contextual errors and will allow many intentional strange words while correcting most typing errors.
However, the keyboard on my Blackberry 9700 still rocks the Optimus 7
I dunno, but I don't think I will ever be as efficient in typing on the virtual keyboard as the real one. Aside from accuracy, it is simply far easier to enter common symbols (like quotes, dollar signs, dashes, and parenthesis) and numbers. Parltly because physical keys allows for more accurate smaller keys. Also, having a real mouse-like cursor is massively useful for typing and editing.
Ok fine, yes, there are WP7 devices with slider keyboards, but I dislike sliders... yes, yes, I'm picky.

Touchpal v/s Swype

So guys there are two competitors in the market also known as swype and touchpal curve. So now the question arise is which of them is better than other one. Here are some details about both
SWYPE- It was developed by the Swype Inc. The first group to bring the innovative swype technology so smooth yet intelligent with its unique technology
touchpal keyboard- It was developed by the COOTEK. With the same technology as the swype it can produce the nearest results to the swype
conclusion- Though touchpal is the latest and the new technology it work slight differenet than swype as it guesses the word right from first letter if its wrong than you will get wrong result but on the other hand it gives the pop up of letter u pressed so it helps when typing. On the other hand swype is smooth and has good search engine. So as compare to touchpal if you seriously want to swype it than go for swype and if you want to type and to swype than go for touchpal curve.
Here are the links for swype and touchpal
SWYPE:-http://beta.swype.com/
TOUCHPAL:-https://market.android.com/details?id=com.cootek.smartinputv5&feature=search_result
To download the swype you need to register to swype fill in the form and then enjoy
Do reply if you have any doubt it query or if this post has helped you in making better decision.....
I use Touchpal and i'm verry happy with it
Swype use more space and if it's not in phone memory every time i use usb cable i have to manually select swype again ... that's annoying !
touchpal seems a bit better, just my opinion
touchpal work better in English but there is no touchpal curve in my language.
you are absolutely right
i prefere swype
i prefer the swype that comes with the stock roms to touchpal
but i prefer touchpal to swype beta
imo swype is a bit more accurate
for brazilian language i dont have nothing to complain about swype. is very great!
Personally, I find flexT9 to be better than both. I also like slideIT a lot. But because I use more than one language Swiftkey is my default. I can switch seamlessly between three languages and the predictions/corrections are amazing in both languages. Well worth trying.
Sent from a phone with an app.
I personally use the swype cause its prediction is quite a handy and it is speedy
I just installed TouchPal and even right now I feel better than Swype beta
I'm a swype beta user, mainly because I like swype and it has a nice collection of dictionaries including my main language (Filipino). I tried touchpal and I admit that it is at par with swype beta (or even better for some). But it is a hassle to type and save every Filipino word that I use (excluding the saved ones of course) in order for me to be able to swype those. It has a good number of dictionaries but swype still supports more languages.
For now, I returned to swype beta, but when the time comes that touchpal supports my main language, then I might get back to it. Unless of course, if swype became smoother and faster that it is today
I prefer Touchpal over Swype. Of the regular keyboards, nothing beats SwiftkeyX IMHO.

You are right swiftkey is damn good keyboard
PROUD TO BE "ACE"TEEMED
, AND ALSO YES HIT "thanks" IF I WAS OF ANY USE TO YOU....... :-\
Swype, only Swype. I like to speedly typing but with TouchPal I cannot do this coz it some laggy.
Swype is the only.
A major reason is because the Touchpal is not included in the Hungarian language.
i think swype have better word prediction and its smooth
I've tried both Swype and Touchpal on my new ICS system.
At first I really loved Touchpal but then I found that it was completly missing 1 out of 10 words I swyped which as far as I'm concerned is completly unacceptable and useless. It breaks my grove to have to be constantly fighting with it to get it to spell dumb commom words like deficient. It also laggs like crazy every time it pops up and as I use the keyboard all the time, it started giving my phone a laggy feel.
I downloaded Swype beta and found that it was getting everything I was swyping, it was fast and did not lagg.
Touchpal has themes. Really nice ones. Swype does not. I'd need to decompile it's apk and modify the img res myself if I want to change it's appearances.
Both Swype and Touchpal have clipboard tools (you know, like: select, select all, scroll left-right-up-down, cut, copy, paste etc..). In ICS this is a must as Google has completly messed up ICS's clipboard management system and you do need a third party solution. They had the long press in an EditText mechanism in Froyo/Eclair which worked perfectly. They've taken that working mechanism and replaced with some new fancy mechanism that doesn't work 80% of the time. Good job guys... this is an epic Apple scale f#$$-up.
Rants over.
Touchpal's clipboard management tools are slightly more accessible then Swype's (a dedicated button vs Swype's change to keyboard characters and long click the edit button) but Swype has some nice gesture shortcuts for Cuting, Copying, Selecting All and Pasting (Swype-X, Swype-C, Sw-A, Sw-V) which compensate for the slightly less accessible Clipboard GUI.
Memory wise: Touchpal uses 15mb. Swype uses 22mb to 32mb!! It's got the connect client sending Swype quality information (as far as they tell us) when it has access to the internet and the rest of the time, it's observing errors, corrections etc. It tends to hit the 32mb range when you open Swype's preferences. I trick Swype to going back to using 22mb of RAM after having accessed it's preference by switching to another keyboard and back to Swype again. If you have some sort of program that can blacklist processes, you maybe able to get Swype to run at 15-17mb by killing SwypeConnect client.
Update: I've installed System Tuner. As far as I can tell it have minimal impact on my system's resources. You can inspect an apps activity list with this software and choose which one to disable. I disabled Swype Connect (the activity at the very bottom of the list). Now it operates at 15mb-22mb of memory and no more invasive activity keeping tabs on what I do.
I used TouchPal, Stock Swype and Swype Beta.
Well, I prefer TouchPal Curve.
