When using HTCSENSE for facebook, and linking contacts my contacts have their facebook picture with a little facebook icon in the corner. This annoys me almost as much as the poor quality of photos. I looked around but can't find anything about this. I browsed some of the directories trying to find the facebook image file so I could replace it but no luck. Anyone whos explored the deep abyss they call Sense care to help?

This is helpful.. but not what I meant.
That option is turned off for me already. What I am talking about is when you link a contact to their facebook profile. ( so that their picture gets changed etc) it shows the tiny blue facebook icon which is an annoyance. There must be a way we can find that image in the filesystem and replace it with a transparent image to get rid of it... I just can't locate it.

I know, I just stumbled upon these and some of the stuff here is nuts. Loving it though and I am keeping hope that someone will know the trick!
If you go in to people, click the person you want to change picture. Click the Link on the top right. Then you can click on the contact photo, and you have the option to change the photo. Hope this helps.

Get over it. It's tiny.
As far as the quality of the images, even if you upload your own, it'll be bad. That's just how it is.

Well syncing it with the actual facebook app doesnt leave the little corner mark, but syncing it without the HTC Sense facebook really sucks, looks like your in a dilemma. If you dont care about the extras you get from HTC Sense facebook you can try the normal one.

I didn't know I could sync with regular facebook. When I removed HTC sense for facebook before it took away any sync capability. Could you explain how you have this set up? I would prefer using the normal facebook app and not the sense one.

Tried this before and broke my stock ROM before I flashed myns. When I uninstalled HTCSense Facebook it stopped syncing contacts and despite having facebook reinstalled I still could not get those two. Are you sure this works? everything I have read is that I would need a third party app like syncmypix, which is why I asked if we can just dump that little facebook icon.

Can you explain how you got this working?
I installed Market Facebook. turned off HTC facebook. When I click the facebook icon in accounts nothing happens.
This happened before on my last rom.
Without HTC sense and just doing it through the facebook app. Your contact names will have to match their facebook extactly
Also the facebook does not update as frequently through
So I cant get the regular android to sync. I click it on the sync menu and nothing pops up. The first time it brought me to the login screen but hasnt done it since even if I remove. googling this and it seems to be a common issue unresolved... so it brings me back to my original question of finding this facebook image in the filesystem and changing it to a transparent png. Any dev whos taken apart sense have any ideas?
I actually would like to see if this is possible as well. Those icons have been annoying me ever since I got my Evo! (release!)
anyone feel like helping? been trying to dig this for a week and can't find any fix.

This is a little off-topic, and I'm sorry if it doesn't belong here, but I am looking for some people to test out a new website I've been working on, and thought I'd look to my fellow Inc2 owners.
When I first got CM7 working on my old Fascinate, I was a little bummed that there was no way to link my Facebook contacts. So I decided to make my own tool. As of right now, it only syncs pictures, no phone numbers or anything.
I've spent a good amount of time working out the bugs, but there is a chance I missed some, so if you encounter any problems please let me know. Don't worry though, it won't mess up your Google contacts at all.
Please note that it currently DOES NOT work in Internet Explorer, due to a bug on Google's end which will hopefully be fixed soon.
http://www.pfrybarger.com/googlefbsync/googlefbsync.html
Thanks!
Edit: Also I should note that this won't work on mobile browsers (can't scroll through certain lists), and you must have javascript enabled in your browser.
What are the benefits over using the Facebook App to sync contacts?
Sent from my ADR6350 using XDA Premium App
Let's see, the main benefits are:
- Ability to crop and resize profile pictures
- Pictures are visible outside of just your phone, so in Gmail for instance
- No need to re-link after flashing a new rom (I always found this a pain)
- Pictures will show up everywhere on your phone. I believe if you use the Facebook app to sync, the pictures will not show up for certain apps, like messaging
- No new contacts will be added to your phone
My tool will only sync pictures, and not phone numbers or email addresses. I found it kind of annoying that the Facebook app would pull these in, but I guess that's a matter of personal preference.
As of right now, there is no automatic updating of profile pictures, but I hope to get this implemented soon.

Gave it a go. after running the program, I got an error pop up that submitted an error report. The program still worked though. It found a few of my contacts in Google that weren't matched up with my Facebook contacts.
So if I'm understanding this, now that I have my Facebook contacts linked with my Google contacts, when loading my contacts on my phone now, (after flashing a rom or doing a hard reset) my Google contacts will still have the pictures linked to them without having to go back and doing the Facebook thing all over again?

Yep, as long as you hit the upload button once you were done linking the contacts. Instead of saving the pictures on the phone, like the Facebook app does, this actually saves the pictures to your Google contacts. So when you do a reset, and sign back in to your Google account, your contact picture will be sent to your phone along with all their other information.
You do need to link all of your contacts on the website though. It doesn't recognize which ones you already have linked on your phone.
I saw the bug reports, I'll take a look and try to see what happened. Thanks for giving it a try!
Could you add the feature of ONLY syncing facebook pictures and no contact numbers? The one thing I hate about syncing facebook in my phone is the fact some people have old numbers still on FB so there are two numbers when you go to call or text someone as well as there are unwanted numbers of people.

Is there any app that downloads a high resolution Facebook contact picture and assigns it to your contact on the phone?
Theres a plethora of apps that sync "high res" pics (Syncmypix), but attaches it to your gmail account, which then downgrades the quality to all hell, because its like 48x48 res.
You can obviously manually download pictures and assign it to each contact, but that will take forever!
The only other solution is to contact everyone to sign up for Google + and upload a high res picture as their profile picture

Thanks. I've been wondering as well.
If I remember correctly, the low-res limitation is due to Google Contacts sync. I believe when google grabs the picture from the contact (which is in high-res first time) it uploads it to Contacts and converts to 64x64px (?) and then it use that low-res picture for all things.
I dont know if it still works like this but as other people said, there is a bunch of threads about this "problem".

exactly, the current syncing apps sync it with gmail, therefore downsizes it to 64x64 pixels, which looks awful on a 720p screen.
I did do a search, and could not find a straight answer.

Why would google release this OS with this new half screen picture UI on contacts and then not allow facebook to use high res photos, it looks like ****!
I can't understand how they looked at that feature and said yeah that looks awesome..
Have you tried Syncmypix ?
from what ive been reading about this phone, the only way to get hi res photos would be if the other users are using google+, all other apps the pic gets downgraded in quality
..

No application is going to do this unless you stop syncing contacts. When syncmypics, friendcaster, whatever else app links a photo to a contact, it is sync'd with google contacts, which downsizes them automatically. If you want to complain, go complain about google contacts.

facebook vs google
From what Ihave heard, google is not agreeing with some policy of facebook and therefore facebook is not letting them sync. However i think its odd that its only with ics. Maybe it has something to do with the use of the large image?

Hi,
This question had already been posted in 'Android Q&A' section few days back, but didn't get any reply. Hope someone can help me with this problem here.
The new ICS 'People' app allows us to use higher resolution images for contacts. And it looks great on big screens. So I spent a lot of time, updating the contacts with high resolution photos. Also I made sure that I 'Sync' ed the contacts after it is done. But now, after doing a factory reset, when I tried to sync back the contacts, it is loading only the low resolution photos of the new updated pictures and not the high resolution of those pics. I checked in GMAIL->Contacts and found they have the same low resolution ones.
Isn't there a way to sync high resolution pictures in Google Contacts?
I'd also be interested in this. Its the Google account that saves the pictures in a tiny resolution. It looks horrible when synced to ICS.
there are three ways to get high resolution pictures.
First, and the only real correct way, is to use Google+. downside is that unless your contacts are on G+ they won't get a high res picture.
Secondly, use haxsync to sync facebook with your phone.
third, manually set high res pictures for every single contact. But yes everytime you wipe your phone you'll have to redo this. However, on normal useage it seems to keep them. i know my phone has synced a few times yet i still have the high resolution pictures on my phone for 3 contacts that are not on G+ and i've rebooted or shut down the phone at least a dozen times, even flashed rom updates and they kept the pictures.
This issue has been discussed here many times.
Short, every time you sync a google contact with a picture from google to your phone it will have the ugly 96*96 resolution. There is no way around it until the contacts team changes this restriction. They are aware of the issue but no word if or when a change is coming: http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/Google+Mobile/thread?tid=49e2b1adea1aa11c&hl=en
So wouldn't syncing your Facebook pics also be temporary since it probably saves the pics locally?
Here's to hoping Google ups the resolution of Google contacts for those who have lots if contacts that aren't on Google+ and wipe their phones often...

no, if you use Google+ or Facebook Sync the pictures are high resolution. thats because it saves that picture to your phone in addition to the google contact picture, but uses the high res G+ or FB picture.

That's too bad! What the f does G+ has anything to do with contacts photo sync. If I want to have a high res photos of my granpa and granny, should I ask them to be on G+? (One can even imagine them being on FB, but G+????)
Also now, too many devices are going to get the 4.0 update and this issue's gonna look terrible!
Even if you manually add pictures to each contact (which I did), the pictures still aren't very high resolution. ICS still resizes the images, leaving them much less sharp than the pictures I originally chose.
If we report these issues to GSMArena or other such websites, will they publish it? So that Google might consider it seriously... Like filling in a petition
I actually though about just this too.
It's apalling that Google doesn't listen to thousands of frustrated users, but hopefully they will listen to big and influential websites like GSMarena.
So we would need people with good contact to the authors of these pages.
Anybody around here knowing one or more authors?

Months of people shouting the same complaint and google employees chiming in with varying degrees of "working on it" and no progress.
Seems like for whatever reason, someone somewhere thinks it's better to say nothing than to tell people that it'll be a while. That or someone at google is just really bad at their job.

Facebook sync is Facebook's fault. The API is there, they are just lazy.
I'm very disappointed, this bug is very annoying.
The bigger a company is, the slower they become. Instead of having one guy do the work and fix it, you need to pass through several layers of approval and people "management" which get in the way. Not only is the request lost several times in between but even if someone at the company wants to fix it, they're told to do something else or fear the risk of being fired.
This is why progress is often achieved by small groups or individuals.

This really sounds like it could work. It's unfortunate but there's generally little incentive to change something unless a fuss is made. Look at what happened with Siri and the "best phone ever" question (Lumiagate). This stuff happens in politics all the time. Nothing gets changed until the press has a field day with it.

That's a good way of putting it. I wish this was fixed because I love seeing high-res pictures in my caller id. Unfortunately, none of my friends use Google+ and I don't use Facebook. Currently I just update the pictures of people who I've starred and, every now and then, I'll update the pictures of people I happen to have on my phone at the moment. I hope it gets fixed by the time JB is dropped.
Maybe it's cause of bandwitch or older phones that will use 96 x 96. That's why they are thinking how to get around this... Let's hope that they will soon fix this issue.
Hi there, did a search but couldn't find anything.
Is there a reason why the image which appears on the top of each persons people contact is so low resolution? I have replaced some of the images of people on there with high resolution pictures but it just low res's them again!
Very annoying on a phone with such a nice screen.
Been wondering the same thing. There is no reason to make them low res, so it must be a bug of some sorts.
Verstuurd van mijn HTC One X met Tapatalk
Not sure what the exact solution to this is and I find it annoying too. I do however use haxsync and merge my phone contacts with their facebook profiles and that keeps them in a decent quality (well, as good as thier facebook profile picture at least). Not a ideal solution but it kinda works..
(Haxsynx also does other stuff, such as showing facebook status updates and history on contacts info but that part doesnt appear to work with the Sense people app, I was standard ICS contacts.. :/ )

The standard people app does it as well, if the phone contact is linked to the facebook one. I know for sure because I have spent an hour unlinking them one by one, as I hate FB messing with my phone contacts.
If you're on about pictures you sync yourself then they go to the Google server where they become nice los res pictures as Google has screwed it up. Syncing to Facebook is a bit better but not perfect...Google+ seems to be the best resolution for contact pictures IMO
Remove the picture and re-attach it. I dont know why it happens but after a few tries, it will attach your picture with the proper resolution
This was an issue for me as well, but Haxsync on Google Play fixes it beautifully. It can force/sync high quality photos from Facebook.

You can try to create a new contact with the photo on "phone" (only photo in it), remove the photo from the "google" contact (if you already have one in it) and leave only the particulars like name and phone numbers, then link the "phone" contact to the "google" contact.
This means google will only sync the particulars from your "google" contact and leave the "phone" contact intact, so you will always have an uncompressed photo.

I manually re-attached hi res pictures and disabled Google contacts sync from Accounts & sync > Google > Sync contacts but they still look terrible when I open the contact details or I receive a call. Any ideas why the hi res pictures are not displayed? I also tried to take a picture directly whit the camera and use it as contact picture but still low res. I had the same issue with my Incredible S but manually re-attach hi res pictures worked in that case.
